"We're not naive about the amount of work that we have in front of us"

[h=3]Nokia[/h]nokia.com
Steve Ballmer has said that the acquisition of Nokia's Devices and Services business is not a fix-all solution to Microsoft's precarious position in the mobile market.
In an interview with The Verge following the announcement of Microsoft's $7.2 billion buyout, Ballmer was candid about the challenge that awaits in trying to close the gap on Android and iOS.
"We're not naive about the amount of work that we have in front of us," he said. "The key is to drive volumes. Driving volumes will activate the software and the hardware ecosystem.
"We do see an ability to even speed our agility in hardware and software innovation. We do think that making the brand and the product line simpler and easier to acquire and being able to invest with greater agility should do a lot to help us continue to improve our market-share and position, which certainly will help apps."
Ballmer reiterated Microsoft's commitment - "in every way, shape, and form" - to improving the app ecosystem for Windows Phone. Despite a close partnership with Nokia for more than two years, Windows Phone has showed only marginal improvements in both market share and the choice offered to its customers in terms of apps and services. In that time, Apple's position as market leader has only seen real competition from Samung's Android devices.
According to Ballmer, the possibility of an acquisition was not considered when Microsoft and first formed its partnership with Nokia, but it started to look like the best way forward at the start of this year. Ballmer also said that he wanted to make sure the deal went through before his imminent retirement, though that shouldn't be read as an indication that Nokia's Stephen Elop will be his successor.
"Before I announced my plans, shortly before, I called Risto because I wanted him to understand that the transaction was important to us despite my plans, that it was consistent with the strategy of Microsoft and our board," he said. "I talked to Stephen Elop about it, everybody remained enthused about the deal and about Stephen joining Microsoft, so that's all happening and independently our board will go through with the succession activity.
"Our board is going through a process open to internal and external candidates. It's a process that they wanted well-known so they could consider everybody internal and external. Stephen Elop happens to be going from external to internal but our board will consider everybody. They will do it in private - that's the right way for the board to conduct its business."

iPhone maker promises to "brighten everyone's day" at rumored iPhone 5S debut
Recent reports of Apple's next big press briefing got the "when" right, so now all that remains is the "what."The Verge is reporting that Apple has mailed out its official invitations to a September 10 event at Apple's Cupertino, California campus.
The invite features the Apple logo in white against a background of multicolored circles, with the tagline, "This should brighten everyone's day." That tease coincides with one of the rumored announcements for the event, the iPhone 5C. The "C" in the product's name supposedly stands for "color," with the phone available in a variety of bright new hues. Aesthetics aside, the iPhone 5C is reportedly intended as a lower-cost alternative to the standard iPhone 5, one with a plastic backing instead of aluminum.
Beyond that, Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5S, an upgraded edition of its flagship handset. While the 5S is rumored to be available in gold as well, the big changes are reported to be a fingerprint scanner, as well as improvements to the CPU and camera.

Google has a plan to circumvent the problem of fragmentation of its Android operating system across the installed base by using its proprietary, closed-source Google Play Services. Play Services is a privileged service that runs on Android and provides the sort of functionality to applications that would generally be seen in operating system updates like cloud backup, remote wipe, push messaging, etc... This service can be updated silently and independently of the operating system and runs on almost every version of Android out there allowing Google to add functionality to Android devices without having to go through the OEMs so having an up-to-date version of Android is looking like less of a necessity."It might be worth noting that Google originally rejected copyleft in favor of permissive licensing in the name of giving OEMs and carriers more control over Android on their devices.

Today Google revealed that the next major version of the Android mobile operating system will be called 'KitKat.' The naming convention has always used sugary snacks in alphabetical order â Jelly Bean (4.1 - 4.3) followed Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), which followed Honeycomb (3.1 - 3.2), which followed Gingerbread (2.3), and so on. Unlike the previous releases, KitKat is named after an actual product, rather than a generic treat. Thus, Google contacted Nestle, who was happy to jump on board and take advantage of the cross-marketing opportunities. According to an article at the BBC, the Android team was originally going to use 'Key Lime Pie,' but they decided it wasn't familiar enough to most people. After finding some KitKat bars in the company fridge, they made the choice to switch. Nestle was on board 'within an hour' of hearing the idea.

HTC has revealed the Desire 300, a new entry-level smartphone, and the Desire 601, a smartphone aimed at mid-range users.
The Desire 300 is said by HTC to be designed for browsing on a budget. The phone features a 4.3-inch screen and is powered by a Qualcomm SnapDragon 1Ghz dual-core processor.
HTCâs targeting of the phone at entry-level web surfers includes its inclusion of BlinkFeed, which personalises the userâs home screen with social media updates, customised content and news.
The Desire 601 joins HTCâs mid-range line of products. HTC says that the 601 inherits several features from the HTC One, which it claims has been âcrowned as the best phone in the worldâ.
Like the One, the 601 features HTCâs âZoeâ camera technology, which takes up to 20 photos and a three-second video at once, and simple editing tools. The rear camera itself is five megapixels, while photos are displayed on the 601âs 4.5-inch qHD screen.
Another feature the 601 adopts from the One is âBoomSoundâ. BoomSound incorporates miniature amplifiers into HTCâs smartphones to produce âless distortion than average smartphones.â
The inclusion of BoomSound in the 601 comes alongside HTCâs announcement of the âBoomBassâ, a wireless Bluetooth subwoofer with a dedicated amplifier that works with BoomSound to allow BoomSound-enabled speakers to produce lower frequency audio.
For the One family, HTC has announced a new colour â âVivid Blueâ â which will arrive in markets during quarter four of 2013.
The Desire 601 will be available in âselect marketsâ across EMEA from September 2013. The Desire 300 and BoomBass subwoofer arrive a month later in October, with the BoomBass found in HTC Accessory stores from the middle of the month.

Following the news that Microsoft is to acquire sections of Nokia in a âŹ5.44 billion (ÂŁ4.61 billion) deal, the industry has been voicing its opinions.
Jeremy Davies, CEO and co-founder of Context, which tracks the retail market for consumer electronics and technology, sees the move as a âgame changerâ as Microsoftâs new presence in the hardware market will bring it into line with Apple and Google.
Davies told PCR: "There are some that say Stephen Elop was on a secret mission ever since he joined Microsoft to get this to happen â of course that's gossip but the move can be seen as inevitable.
"This purchase by Microsoft is a game changer and it now puts the once software-only company firmly in the hardware business, a place it has to be in to compete with Apple and Google, and most importantly to be able to leverage the huge Windows asset across a variety of platforms while reducing dependence on PCs."
Telecoms analyst CCS Insight shares some of Davies' beliefs, seeing Microsoft's firm push into hardware as a "bold, but necessary gamble".
"Mobile needs to be a cornerstone of Microsoft's business for future success,' Ben Wood, Chief of Research for CCS Insight, said in a press release, seeing Microsoft as "left with few alternatives" if it wishes to remain in the smartphone market.
"This is by no means a silver-bullet solution to Nokia and Microsoft's current difficulties," Wood added. "But the move should be positive for bth companies. A more integrated approach will help ovecome some of the challenges Nokia and Microsoft have faced as independent entities."
Meanwhile Juniper Research acknowledged Nokiaâs former power as a mobile phone producer, while also expressing that the once-iconic brand has struggled to break into the smartphone market, losing 65 per cent of smartphone sales between 2010 and 2012.
âWhile the acquisition of Nokia provides Microsoft with a much needed uplift and presence in the mobile sector,â stated a Juniper press release, âintegrating these new assets, brand building and increasing market share will be the real challenge.â
Despite this, Juniper sees Microsoftâs purchase as a âkey strategy to expand and strengthen its strong mobile and fixed device ecosystem,â and comments upon its expectation that Microsoft will move into wearable devices soon.
Like Juniper, Strand Consult research commented upon Nokiaâs decline in the smartphone market âfrom being the leader to a bit part actor,â focusing on the challenge of competing with iOS or Android.
Strand Consult observed that, with its Devices & Services arm gone, âNokia, once a global powerhouse, has been reduced to an infrastructure company with patents and Navteq maps.â
For Microsoft, Strand Consult says that the move is an attempt to maintain their presence in the smartphone market â âIf Nokia had been bought by Lenovo, Huawei or another player, Microsoft's role in the mobile world would have been reduced to nothing in a short timeâ
Regardless, Strand Consult sees the end of âthe Nokia saga as marking the end of the mobile phone era, and the beginning of a new age when IT and internet companies define the hardware and services of the mobile device ecosystem.â

In 2011 when Nokia announced it was throwing its lot in with Microsoft â in that it will use Windows Phone exclusively on its phones â it painted a picture of two players from different areas of the market dwarfed by their respective competition, teaming up in order to impose a larger frame. Like Benelux, or something.
It came after what must have a been a difficult bit of pride swallowing on Nokia's part, admitting that itâs own operating systems just werenât going to cut the mustard anymore.
Becoming properly unified is the natural extension of that allianceâ and can certainly be seen as making Microsoft more dangerous looking as a challenger to the monolith of Appleâs iPhone, and the cabal of HTC, Samsung and Sony smartphones in the Android bloc.
The problem thatâs been facing both firms is the same, though for different reasons.
Microsoft made zillions in cash over 30 years of the PC business, and became a huge global operation in the process. It could be said this sheer scale, itâs massiveness alongside its entanglement with laptops and desktops (not that it doesnât make plenty out of those still), stopped it responding as quick as it might when the world turned its head suddenly towards smartphones.
Nokia at one point, ten years ago say, sat astride the mobile phone market. But as soon as smartphones became the thing, it took the firm an awful long time to come up with some kind of legitimate contender.
The new Nokia Lumiaâs are good â but the first phones anyone really thought of as proper contenders was the Lumia 820 and 920. That was in 2012 â the iPhone came out in 2007.
Despite critical acclaim for these Windows based blowers â theyâve not really set the world alight. It seemed like despite proving itself technically capable of producing a very good smartphone (which you could not say before) that might not be enough.
You now needed a have a reason not to go for the iPhone or the latest Samsung/Google collaboration â which is a different thing to having a reason to go for a Nokia.
Presumably there are some at Microsoft eying the Apple model of complete software/hardware offering, which has needless to say served the iPhone business pretty well.
A wholly owned ecosystem not only means you donât have to share the wealth, but it is presumably much easier to make a nice simple product that just works (to coin a certain bit of hyperbole).
Google is in a similar position having bought Motorola â and weâre still waiting to see a big impact with that. But there are potentials pitfalls to this strategy â i.e. you render your other hardware partners like HTC and Samsung a bit cheesed off.
Microsoft has deals with other phone makers of course, but its market share is in single digits. It has less to loose in terms of the current deals with them, it could be argued.
But it has more to loose if it doesnât start carving its self out a wider space for itself in smartphones. This could be the beginning of that.

GeekWire reports on a pending Microsoft patent that proposes to give parents a centralized dashboard on their phones for remotely monitoring and setting restrictions on other family members' mobile devices. The newly-published patent application for Automatically Quieting Mobile Devices explains how parents could use the dashboard to shut down family members' devices during certain time periods, at designated locations, during specified events, and in designated quiet zones. From the patent: 'Aspects that might be disabled include any type of interactive functions and/or features of a device (except, in some examples, initiating emergency telephone calls or emergency text messages and displaying the current time/date or information related to the quiet time may still be permitted), playing games, communicating (via phone, VOIP applications, text messaging, instant messaging, and/or email), using other applications (e.g., browsers, messaging applications, social networking applications, or consuming certain content (e.g., digital media content).' Microsoft also proposes equipping parents' phones with 'biometric detection' to thwart kids who try to circumvent 'Big Mother'.

To kick off IFA, Acer's announcing a new tablet running Android Jelly Bean, the 10.1-inch Iconia A3. Available in both WiFi and 3G versions, the A3 will hit Africa, Europe and the Middle East in early October with a starting price of âŹ249. The slate's IPS panel sports a 1,280 x 800 resolution, and Acer's touting the tablet's audio chops -- Dolby Digital Plus is on board to provide "a virtualized 5.1-channel surround experience over headphones." The Iconia A3 runs a quad-core cortex A7 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and you have your choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD, of course).
In addition to launching the Iconia A3, Acer's announcing new color options for its Iconia A1 and B1 tablets. The 7.9-inch A1 is now available in white, Smokey Grey and Ivory Gold, while the 7-inch B1 comes in Oceanic Blue and Vermilion Red. Head past the break for the full press release.

Acer introduced its first Android-powered all-in-one earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, and it's following up with a second model here at IFA. The just-announced DA241HL is a 24-inch touch machine running Android Jelly Bean 4.2 with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor under the hood. Yes, you read that correctly -- that NVIDIA chip is usually found in mobile devices, but Acer's found a home for it in a decidedly larger package. The company says the DA241Hl is "designed to offer users the same familiar experience as with tablets and smartphones," which also explains the Android OS on board. Naturally, users have access to Google Play, and MHL connectivity means the AIO can act as a monitor complete with two-point touch. Acer will launch the 24-incher in October for âŹ429 and up.
We're not finished yet; the company's rolling out three other desktops, all of which have a full HD 23-inch touch display. The Aspire U5-610 comes with your choice of Intel Haswell processors, along with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M GPU and up to 16GB of RAM. At âŹ1,129 and up, it's the highest-end option of the group. The Aspire Z3-105, starting at âŹ799, sports an IPS display and runs AMD's latest A series quad-core CPUs with Radeon graphics, and it brings the entertainment chops with Harman Kardon speakers and Dolby Home Theater surround sound. Both the U5-610 and the Z3-105 will launch in December. Finally, there's the Aspire Z3-610, which runs a Haswell processor with your choice of Intel graphics or an NVIDIA GPU. It will go for âŹ799 and up when it hits the market in January. You'll find the press info for all four products past the break.

Our previous look at a tangled pile of iPhone 5C's wasn't especially flattering, and it only showed the plain white version of the rumored handset. The newer image above is impossible to authenticate, but it's a tad more sympathetic and it comes from a batch of photos of yellow, pink and blue plastic iPhones (or perhaps knock-offs) that briefly appeared on Chinese site iapps.im before being deleted at the request of a "relevant party." Although there are definitely some echoes of Nokia's Lumia 620 here, the close-up shot of the blue model suggests we may be looking at something a bit thinner, with slightly less rounded edges, and with a non-removable unibody that may also have a more serious matte finish -- although the translucent packaging makes it hard to be sure. Go ahead and squint at the other photos after the break.

iPhone owners are now able to trade-in their handsets in exchange for store credit at Apple stores.
Talk of the plans first appeared online last week.
The amounts offered will range between $125-$250 depending on the model and condition. The scheme has been rolled out nationwide across the US â meaning itâs ready for the rollout of the new iPhone models later this month.
The bad news, however, is that Apple has no plans to extend the scheme beyond the US meaning thereâs no luck for UK consumers.
A rep told Crave that: "This program is currently US only and we have nothing further to add at this point in time."

Annual subscription costs to dev centre cut after successful summer promotion
Microsoft has lowered the annual fee for Windows Phone development.
During the summer, developers had been offered a cut down price of $19 to sign up to the Windows Phone Dev Centre. The cost for UK developers is ÂŁ15.
Following a successful promotion, the team will be keeping the lowered price moving forward.
The annual subscription fee previously stood at $99 a year.
The Windows Dev Centre offers developers access to tools, code samples, marketing tips, guidelines and certification requirements and the ability to submit apps to the store.

Almost 100 per cent of all web traffic comes from a mobile in some countries.
The top 15 countries with the highest smartphone penetration have even higher smartphone web traffic, reports 51Degrees.mobi.
Ownership of smartphones in the top 15 countries â led by Denmark, Israel, Spain, Australia and South Korea â averages around 53 per cent.
However the web traffic share from the same 15 countries has averaged at around 90 per cent, displaying that people are using a smartphone to browse the web much more than on feature phones or any other device.
Smartphone traffic from Denmark and Israel, who lead the top 15, is just under 100 per cent.
The US - who currently lead the smartphone shipment market â are down in eighth place with just over 90 per cent of traffic from a smartphone, and just behind is the UK who has stuck fast at ninth place with 90 per cent.
At the tail end of the 15 countries is Norway, who has seen the most similar results between ownership at 67.5 per cent and web usage at 68.9 per cent.
The only country not conforming to this stat is the United Arab Emirates, which showed that even though smartphone ownership is high, actual web usage on their devices is rather low.

LGâs new mini tablet blurs the line between phones, tablets and phablets even further than it already is.
The LG G Pad 8.3, which weighs less than a pound and runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, will be released equipped with 16GB of memory and 2GB of RAM.
There will also be a 1.3MP front facing camera and a 5MP one on the back.
Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics mobile communication company, said: âComplementing our G series smartphones, the introduction of the LG G Pad 8.3 further strengthens LGâs premium lineup consisting of our most cutting edge devices.â
The 8-inch gadget was announced on LGâs blog yesterday and will be officially debuted during next week's IFA 2013 in Berlin.
The pocket device is the answer to an apparent consumer demand for a smaller tablet, that connects between multiple devices, as well as other manufacturers smartphones and tablets using Jelly Bean OS.
The release date and price are currently unclear, but introduction of the device is expected initially into North America, Europe and Asia during the fourth quarter of this year.
Dr Park continued: âOur G Pad is just another example of LG delivering devices with the unique selling points consumers around the world will appreciate.â
Earlier this year, LG reported record smartphone sales of 10.3 million units during the first quarter of 2013, becoming the worldâs third largest mobile manufacturer.

Nomophobia â the fear of being without a phone â now affects over 54 per cent of the UK population, according to research.
The study commissioned by AppRiver, which looked at 1,000 employed individuals, also found that the affliction, which was first identified five years ago, is 17 per cent more likely to affect women than men.
Even while on holiday, 42 per cent of people will take their device to the beach with them, to avoid leaving it at home, and 28 per cent of people â more likely to be male than female â still check work emails while away.
Meanwhile, a quarter of those studied email or text while on a dinner date, with women ten per cent more likely to do so. The problem extends into the bedroom too, with almost a fifth â 17 per cent â checking their mobile while in bed.
Despite over half of the UK being mobile-loving Nomophobes, only half of the population use a password or security to protect their beloved device. 70 per cent also lack a way to wipe their phone remotely if it were ever stolen.
Speaking to Comms Dealer, Fred Touchette, senior security analyst at AppRiver, said: âWith so much information stored on them - from confidential office documents, contact details, emails, photos, bank log-ins, etc, when these devices get lost or stolen and end up in the wrong hands the information is so easily exploited as little to any security precautions are taken.â
"Our advice is always to protect your phone with security - at the very least with a password, and if you're using it for work get your IT department to secure them with encryption or even better the ability to wipe them remotely."

Images said to show a prototype version of Samsungâs Galaxy Gear smartwatch have appeared online alongside detailed specifications.
Following the deviceâs official announcement last week, the images, taken from a third-party promotional video, and specifications hosted on VentureBeat claim to be that of a prototype version of the Galaxy Gear, which was sent to developers and select partners.
Aligning with previous rumours, the photos show the watch with a square screen, measuring roughly three inches diagonally. Also matching previous rumours is the use of an OLED display.
VentureBeat, which claims to have used the watch, notes the Galaxy Gearsâ chunkiness. It connects via Bluetooth to Samsungâs Galaxy line of smartphones, but may also support all Android devices. Also present is Wi-Fi, for internet and email capability without the need for a phone.
A four-megapixel camera is incorporated in the Gearâs strap, with speakers similarly hidden in its clasp. Venture Beat claims that the camera can gather health data âby photographing food, for example â and tag it with necessary labels such as âfatâ or âgrainsâ.
Other features noted in the reveal include Samsung S Voice for voice commands, preloaded health and social media apps, the use of swipe motions to access apps, photos and camera functionality, call logs, internet access including social media integration such as sharing, a side-mounted power button and a battery life of over ten hours.
The images and details are yet to be validated, but will be quickly proved true or false in a matter of days as Samsung builds up to the Galaxy Gearâs official reveal on September 4th.

PPSSPP Git (2013/09/01) is compiled. PPSSPP is a fast and portable PSP emulator for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, written in C++.
PPSSPP Git Changelog:
* Merge pull request #3545 from unknownbrackets/warnings
Warning fixes
* Add a note so as not to forget.
* Add some reporting to the software GPU.
* Fix some initialization/sprintf warnings.
* Remove -ffast-math from cmakelists
* Merge pull request #3546 from Kingcom/Assembler
Proper assembler error messages
* Correct move pseudo opcode
* Display proper error messages when assembling failed
* Merge pull request #3544 from unknownbrackets/module-imports
Invalidate icache on stub/var import update
* Cleanup comment (broke savestates anyway.)
* Keep unknown syscall reporting the same.
Oops.
* Invalidate stubs/var imports when writing them.
* Just invalidate blocks on ClearCacheAt().
This makes it safe to call from a jitted syscall, etc.
* Fix InvalidateICache() breaking binary searching.
* Prevent a crash in debugger without jit.
* Include the PPC jit in the project.
So it's easier to find when refactoring.
* Merge pull request #3542 from unknownbrackets/module-imports
Track module imports and exports with a proper lifecycle
* Get rid of the bad object errors on shutdown.
* Unresolve function imports, track in loader.
* Optimize a bit by checking module names.
* Unexport var symbols when destroying modules.
The problem with a global list is that an unloaded module with unresolved
imports will get garbage written in. This should be safer, and hopefully
not slower.
Next up: func imports.
* Centralize and track imports/exports.
So that we can "unresolve" them.
* Merge pull request #3540 from raven02/patch-33
Apply auto-gen mipmapping to desktop
* Apply auto-gen mipmapping to WIN32
* Merge pull request #3537 from unknownbrackets/utility-minor
Return wrong dialog type in screenshot/gamesharing
