A new type of smart watch that aims to turn a user's "hand into a phone" is entering production after smashing its funding target.
Hot Watch was seeking $150,000 on Kickstarter but has already amassed more than $370,000 with around a month to go.
The Bluetooth device lets callers send and receive messages and make private calls without touching their phone. Users simply place the watch close to their ear to make and receive calls, but it must be within 20 to 30 feet of their phone to work.
Hot Watch features private calls, contact downloads, texts, emails, Facebook, Twitter, apps including weather, stocks and calendar, as well as a pedometer, calculator, alarm, timer and more.
There are four models in development - Edge, Classic, Basic and the premium Curve version.
The watch also boasts an M3 processor, Sharp 1.26-inch E-paper display, Bluetooth 4.0, a 6-Axis Accelerometer and Gyroscope, bright flash light, vibration motor and an SDK for third-party custom apps. It is also water resistant.
"This elegant, bio-mechanical solution empowers private calls like never before, imparting a similar experience to placing a phone to your ear," read a statement. "The beauty and potential of this patent pending idea, evolving how humans communicate, inspired us to make this watch a reality."

Apple and Samsung are both allegedly planning to release tablets with 12-inch or larger displays.
Sources from the upstream supply chain told DigiTimes that the vendors are attempting to create a new market segment in a bid to move away from competition from small-size devices.
The sources say that Samsung is attempting to compete with the notebook industry with a range of bigger sized tablets.
Apple is expected to release a number of new devices on September 10th, and while it is unlikely that weâll see a 12-inch+ iPad next month, maybe 2014 will be the year the firm looks towards even bigger displays for its mobile devices.

Steve Jobs' second tenure at Apple, from 1996 onwards, saw the launch of the iPad, the iPod and the iPhone â three products that have redefined their respective sectors, if not outright dominated them.
Itâs a period which made Apple the biggest company in the world for a time, and gave it more spare cash than the US federal reserve.
By the time the iPhone was in full swing, Apple launch events had started to look like rock concerts. As well as the products themselves, rival tech firms have even been trying to emulate the glitzy launches âthe latest strategy is to wheel out a celebrity and claim they are holding some 9-5 job with the company, or have some philosophical affinity with the branding.
Apple didnât need to have celebrities launching its products, Steve Jobs was one of the very few recognisable faces outside of the industry â he was the talent.
Big shoes to fill, then. Tim Cook taking over as successor was Jobs' plan by all accounts â the man who handled the supply chains for Appleâs whole operation was probably seen as a safe pair of hands.
Since Cook took over the reins in 2011, a lot of commentators have lamented a lack of paradigm changing products like the iPad or iPhone. And now according to a Fox Business report, investors are starting to agree. The reporterâs sources apparently say the board "is now worried about what they have in the pipeline".
I canât help but think this âwhat have you done for me latelyâ attitude is all a bit hard on Tim Cook.
Apple has a reputation as a great innovator and thatâs fair to a point, but really it did not invent the mobile telephone, the MP3 player or the tablet computer. Itâs strength has always been to take a gadget, simplify the hell out of it, make it look nicer than everyone elseâs, and charge a premium for it. And thatâs what itâs continuing to do with each iteration of iPad, iPhone, and Mac.
What this call for âmore innovationâ seems to really be about is new product categories. That Apple should be continually inventing new sectors within the technology industry . Well that would be nice for Apple and tech fans alike, but itâs quite a demand.
You donât get video games execs under fire for not inventing new gaming genres, or car companies berated for trotting the same old 4 wheel vehicles.
Pressure to release something entirely original for the sake of it will probably result in something stupid, and ultimately do more harm than good.
Actually, the tone of it smacks of envious looks in the direction of Google Glass. Itâs inventive, sure, but the jury is still very much out on whether or not it can be anything youâd describe as a mass marketable item.
Personally Iâm just not sure I can see an awful lot of people walking around with computers on their faces anytime soon, especially in the UK where its considered extrovertly flashy to pop on a pair of sunglasses.
The Apple successes that get referred to are the mass market strategies of the iPhone et al. As opposed to some players in the tech industry, Apple veers away from flashy curiosities aimed at a hardcore niche.
However the firm is rumoured to be working on an array of products, some more questionable than the others. The iCar is one, the iWatch another â and then thereâs the slightly more believable iTV. All fiction right now, but Apple hasnât gone out of its way to quash any of these rumours.
Thereâs a strong argument that if Apple came out with a bin, bin sales would go up. But pressuring Apple High Command to start branching out into new areas for the same of it, or teasingly waving around fringe level proof-of-concept items that may or may not be released in a hundred years time, may not be the best course for a firm that can only, in any sense that means anything, be described as doing well.
You have to have some pretty high expectations to look at a business which consistently trots out what are widely regarded as the best products in the tech industry, making more cash than some countries in the process, and identify a problem.

The Nvidia Shield has gotten off to a strong start, according to Nvidia execs.
Despite a slight delay and last-minute changes to the device's controversial launch price, Nvidia's senior director of investor relations Chris Evenden says the portable is doing well at retail.
"Sales have been great," said Evenden to investors recently, via Games Industry. "Everything that we shipped so far has sold out and - but we're just starting to ramp production," he claimed.
"We've shipped out to our partners only several thousand units, and so it's still quite early to tell. But we're expecting to do quite well with Shield."
The device was released on July 31, and offers higher-end Android performance in a dedicated portable gaming platform.
Powered by an Android Tegra 4 processor, Shield features a five-inch retina-display touchscreen and can play full games directly from a PC (provided the host PC uses a GeForce GTX 650 card or higher).
Nvidia reported $977.2 million in revenues for Q2 2013 ended July 28, and net income of $96.4 million, both down slightly from last year.
Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang said the firm is looking forward to string performance going forwards "with new Tegra 4 devices coming to market, SHIELD moving beyond the U.S. and broader sampling of Project Logan, our next-generation Tegra processor, which brings Kepler, the world's most advanced GPU, to mobile."

OUYA has launched its promised fund-matching campaign to spur development of games for its recently launched Android console. Now known as the Free the Games Fund, the effort rewards successful Kickstarter campaigns with a matching $50,000 to $250,000; OUYA will back as many games as its $1 million pool allows. There are a few conditions, of course. Producers have to meet that $50,000 minimum, end their campaigns within the next year and agree to a six-month OUYA exclusive. The console maker will also stagger payments across the development cycle, although the company promises an additional $100,000 to the most successful project. If you're looking for help in building a game and are willing to take a chance on a young platform, full details of the fund await at the source link.

Competition can be a beautiful thing. AT&T's Next upgrade pricing hasn't looked good when compared against Verizon Edge in the weeks since launch, but today is a different story: the carrier has quietly lowered the monthly payments for some devices. While the company hasn't said which hardware is cheaper, the Galaxy S 4 and iPhone 5 have dropped from $32.50 per month to $27. Prices are down for BlackBerry and Nokia devices as well, a tipster says. As MacRumors notes, the bargains are rather convenient. While AT&T isn't offering as good a deal as T-Mobile, a 16GB iPhone 5 now costs $1 less through one year of Next payments than it does with a similar Verizon Edge plan. You'll want to act soon if you like what you see, too. AT&T tells us that this is a promotion; although there's no firm end date for the discounts, we wouldn't count on these rates lasting forever.

The U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that certain models of Samsung phone violate Apple patents, and are likely to be blocked from import to the U.S. From the article: "The patents in question are U.S. Patent No. 7,479,949, which relates to a touch screen and user interface and U.S. Patent No. 7,912,501 which deals with detecting when a headset is connected. The ITC said Samsung didnât infringe on the other two patents. In a statement on the matter, the ITC said the decision is final and the investigation has been closed. ... As was the case with the previous ruling that saw Apple devices banned, the ban on Samsung devices wonât go into effect until 60 days but can be blocked by a favorable ruling following a presidential review. That seems unlikely as such a block has only been issued once since 1987 â lastâs weekâs ruling in favor of Apple."

Lower costs give emerging markets the opportunity to experience a better device.
The cheap smartphones - which are defined as being a device with a wholesale price under $200 - are appearing more often in manufacturers portfolios, both pin the emerging and developed markets.
Shipments of the cheaper handsets are forecasted to increase from 238 million this year, to 758 million by 2018 driven mainly by BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) who have low penetration of smartphones and large subscriber bases, reports ABI Research.
Nokia recently released a ÂŁ200 Lumia 625, in a bid to battle the lowering prices of Android devices. The 4.7inch screened smartphone, along with other lower cost devices, opens up the world of high-end devices to more consumers, giving them the opportunity to experience the benefits of a better phone.
Jeff Orr, senior practice director at ABI Research, said: "We are increasingly seeing low cost smartphones appear as a solution for prepaid operators in developed markets. By 2018, ABI Research believes low cost smartphones will account for 44 per cent of all smartphone shipments as the market looks to capture the next billion smartphone users."
Cheap device developers such as Huawei - whose revenues hit $18.4 billion in the first half of this year - and ZTE are pushing their market share to increase brand recognition in a bid to move up the market - a move which could put significant pressure on the higher end OEMs (Original equipment manufacturers) such as Samsung and Apple.

Google is encouraging PC retailers to attract new customers by placing local ads within its Google Maps app for smartphones and tablets.
It has launched an update for Android and iOS devices (including the iPhone and iPad), that will aid users searching for a 'PC store' for example, by listing all their local computer retailers on the map screen.
Relevant ads on the Google Maps app can now appear at the bottom of the screen after a user performs a search. These include a title, ad text, and a link to get directions.
When a user clicks an ad to get location details, they will see the address, phone number, photos, reviews and more.
Local businesses can add their details for a fee, which Google says is a standard cost-per-click charge. It charges up to two paid clicks per ad impression.
Some free actions include saving business information for later, sharing a business with a friend, or starting navigation.
View the Google AdWords blog for more information on how to place local business ads.

Sales of tablet computers are still booming â but there are fears the prolific sector could burn itself out.
Carphone Warehouse plans to grow its tablet offering after posting a âsignificantâ year-on-year sales increase; it has even enlisted the help of model Kate Moss to design exclusive tablet accessories for its stores.
Currys and PC World are seeing strong growth in the tablet category too, including a 344 per cent rise in sales of tablet accessories year-on-year. It expects skins, keyboards and cases to be âhuge sellersâ this holiday season.
Market research firm GfK recently told PCR that tablets and accessories have been key to keeping the market afloat, and âwill continue to play a crucial role in driving the industryâs growth throughout 2013â. Meanwhile, Gartner estimates worldwide tablet shipments will grow 67.9 per cent this year to some 202 million units. But indies are concerned about the sheer amount of product.
Dave Richter from Poole-based Computer Service store PCs Made Simple told PCR: âI think the tablet bubble will burst, because itâs developing at such a rapid pace itâs hard to know whatâs best for customers.
âThere are a lot of budget tablets â itâs quite hard to keep pace with which ones are any good and which arenât. Youâll order one in and later find out itâs been dropped [by the distributor] and has disappeared. We donât want to sell something that customers arenât going to be happy with.â
Garry Stonehouse from Marske-based indie Gbiz IT added: âThere are too many budget tablets but weâve stayed at the higher end of that market.
âHowever, the quality of lower priced tablets is increasing, which has allowed us to increase our range downwards without looking terrible.â
Synaxon UK MD Derek Jones commented: âThe tablet bubble will burst, but then itâll be replaced. Things will change and get smaller quicker as theyâve always done.â

Sony and Coca-Cola have collaborated on a free cross-promotion mobile game called PlayStation All-Stars Island.
The game, which was released today for both iOS and Android devices, is set on an island with four zones, each one containing and endless runner-style game based on a Sony franchise; Uncharted, LBP Karting, inFAMOUS and Gravity Rush.
In each game you're tasked with collecting Coke-branded tokens to build up an experience meter and unlock new challenges that star yet more familiar characters, including Ratchet and Clank, Sackgirl and Jak and Daxter.
For now, it seems, only the so-called Uncharted: Drake's Pursuit portion of the island is available, but the others are promised soon.
"Run at breakneck speed through a tangled jungle of fallen trees as legendary treasure hunter Nathan Drake," reads the official description. "Keep on sliding, jumping and diving over cliffs and raging rivers to escape Drake's ruthless pursuers and collect Coke Zero Drops that will unleash PlayStation heroes and bonus challenges into your game."
In related news, Sony Santa Monica recently confirmed that there will be no more new character or arena DLC for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on PS3 and Vita.

Apparently Apple isn't the only company thinking the US Department of Justice'srecently imposed remedies against it were "draconian." US publishers HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin and others have also ganged up on the DOJ with a legal brief opposing the punitive restrictions. In it, they say the watchdog is "attempting to impose a specific business model on the publishing industry," despite assertions it wouldn't play that role. If you'll recall, Apple was recently found guilty of price-fixing following charges filed last year. Now, the Justice Department is trying to force Apple to end its current agreements with the publishers and let rival e-book retailers like Amazon link to their own online stores.
Apple earlier condemned the decision, saying it was "wildly out of proportion to any... wrongdoing or potential harm." The publishers added that it effectively punishes them by prohibiting the so-called agency model, which lets them set their own prices for e-books and other media. A similar affair was settled rather more amicably in Europe, meanwhile, when the same band of publishers agreed to allow other retailers to sell e-books cheaper than Apple does, if they so choose. Evidently, they feel the DOJ overstepped its bounds in the US and seem intent to back Apple to the bitter end.

While Hisense's Sero 7 LT and Sero 7 Pro tablets were good deals when they first shipped, the competition hasn't stood still. The company clearly wants to stay ahead of the value curve, as it just knocked $20 off the prices of both Android slates. The basic Sero 7 LT now costs $79 and the Tegra 3-packing Sero 7 Pro has dropped to $129. Both price cuts are already in effect at Walmart, so there's no reason to hesitate if you were looking for a better bargain in Hisense's tablet line.
