The next Star Ocean game, Star Ocean: Material Trader, will incorporate the series' universe of characters and items into a social-oriented, role-playing card game, according to Siliconera's translation of Gamer's report. Series Producer Yoshinori Yamagishi is working with Circle of Mana developer Hippos Lab, Square-Enix's smartphone division, to lead Material Trader's development. The game will reach iOS and Android devices this year.
Players help the game's protagonist Tina by collecting "star shards," tackling quests, gathering experience and hoarding money. Hunting for materials and characters while exploring seems to be essential to boosting odds of success in the game. The series' trademark Item Creation mechanic also returns, allowing players to create and equip powerful accessories to their favorite cards.
Those who register before it releases will get a special card of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time's Peppita Rossetti.

NVIDIA has confirmed that its upcoming Android gaming handheld, Shield, will start shipping on July 31st. The Tegra 4 testing platform was originally scheduled to hit online retailers in late June, but was delayed due to "a mechanical issue that relates to a third-party component." Now, the company is writing to customers with pre-orders thanking them for their patience and assuring them the product will be on its way by the end of the month.
The finalized ship date puts the product within its delayed July launch window by technicality, but due to the nature of snail mail, most buyers probably won't receive their unit until after the first of August. Frustrating for eager buyers perhaps, but at least NVIDIA's email strikes an apologetic tone -- assuring customers that the delay was a quality assurance measure. Can't wait until the end of the month? Check out our hands-on with the final hardware right here. Didn't pre-order? You'll find the company's official statement after the break.

Scottish games development luminary Chris Sawyer has redesigned his 1994 management simulation classic Transport Tycoon for touch-screen devices.
[Update: the first five screens of the game can be found below]

In partnership with London games studio Origin8 Technologies, Sawyer plans to release the redesigned game on iOS and Android platforms later in 2013.
Little is known of the project, though it is claimed that it aims to "recreate and restore Sawyer's original simulation code, resulting in the deepest, richest simulation game yet seen on mobile".
As well as Transport Tycoon, Sawyer is credited for creating key management games of the '90s, including Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2.
The original was praised by now-defunct games magazine Computer Gaming World as "an addictive, strongly strategic game with great depth, beautiful production values, and fantastic gameplay."
Before his decade-long hiatus from the games industry, one of Sawyer's final games was the PC sim Locomotion. Critics were disappointed with the game.
Apple's iOS platforrn has become a popular destination for classic game revivals. In 2011 Codemasters re-released a Dizzy game for Apple's smartphone platform, and a year later Activision Leeds revealed a new Pitfall game for the smartphone.

We've reached out to all of the usual suspects, and only one of them hasn't stuck a thumb up and winked when we've asked if it'll be carrying HTC's "diminutive" new smartphone. O2, EE, Vodafone, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed that they'll carry the One mini, while ThreeUK has yet to get back to us. There's no solid information on how much the device will cost on a monthly or one-off basis, but Carphone Warehouse is already accepting sim-free pre-orders for a very plausible £380. That same retailer is also saying that the phone is due to arrive on August 9th, but we'll take that assertion with a pinch of environmentally-friendly salt.
