In partnership with London games studio Origin8 Technologies, Sawyer plans to release the redesigned game on iOS and Android platforms later in 2013.
Little is known of the project, though it is claimed that it aims to "recreate and restore Sawyer's original simulation code, resulting in the deepest, richest simulation game yet seen on mobile".
As well as Transport Tycoon, Sawyer is credited for creating key management games of the '90s, including Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2.
The original was praised by now-defunct games magazine Computer Gaming World as "an addictive, strongly strategic game with great depth, beautiful production values, and fantastic gameplay."
Before his decade-long hiatus from the games industry, one of Sawyer's final games was the PC sim Locomotion. Critics were disappointed with the game.
Apple's iOS platforrn has become a popular destination for classic game revivals. In 2011 Codemasters re-released a Dizzy game for Apple's smartphone platform, and a year later Activision Leeds revealed a new Pitfall game for the smartphone.
