NVIDIA champions GRID as a perfect fit for cloud gaming platforms, but we haven't had much chance to see a good use case in action. The company was more than happy to oblige at E3, however, by streaming games from GRID to an OUYA system. AsAndroid Central caught on video, the tiny console is well-suited to the job: its Tegra 3 and gamepad can comfortably handle remote delivery of an intensive game likeBorderlands 2, at least in the controlled world of a trade show. While OUYA doesn't have much (official) access to NVIDIA's GRID at present, the booth demo was a possible vision of the future. It certainly gave OUYA an escape from its hassles on the street.

AT&T has rolled out Wireless Emergency Alerts for iPhones. The alerts are for huge catastrophes (a Presidential Alert), for weather / natural calamities, and for AMBER alerts. One can turn off the latter two, but the Presidential alert cannot be turned off. The article mentions only 4S and 5 get this update. That said, I have a 4 and it got the update this morning. This was enacted in 2006, for those keeping track of such things. I, for one, do not care for this any more than I like the idea of them reading my communications to begin with. Oh, I'm sorry, the "metadata" from my communications."

After years of rumors and months of bickering with Apple over revenue splits, Microsoft has finally released an official iOS app for Office 365 subscribers, allowing people to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their iPhones and iPads. According to a hands-on report with the software, the Office app has basic functionality, but is missing some key productivity features. 'These include: font options, text alignment, bulleted lists and, again, more color choices, all of which you can find in, say, the Google Drive app.' They say it's a fairly useful addition for current subscribers, but certainly not enough to make it worth the Office 365 subscription fee on its own. 'We can't tell if Microsoft deliberately handicapped Office Mobile for iPhone, or if it's simply saving some features for a later update. (A company rep declined to comment on what we can expect from future versions.) We're willing to believe Microsoft still has some unfinished items on its to-do list, but even so, it's a shame that iPhone users waited this long for an Office app, only to get something with such a minimal feature set. All told, Office Mobile represents a good enough start for Microsoft, and in some ways it's better than Google Drive, particularly where spreadsheets are concerned. Still, it's miles behind other office apps for iOS, including Apple iWork.'"

Fresh rumours arise around Apple increasing the size of iPhone screens
Weird and wonderful predictions and rumours are always rearing their head concerning the future of Apple and what wizardry it will unveil next. Seemingly, these supposed fairy-tales end up being quite close to the mark.
On this occasion there are a few little titbits that have had us pricking up our ears - firstly a potential increase in size of the iPhone screen.
Apple has already moved away from the iPhone's longstanding display size of 3.5-inches featured on the 3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S and boosted it to four-inches on the iPhone 5. However, Apple is now apparently looking to introduce a 4.7-inch screened model and even a 5.7-inch one, according to Reuters, but it's unclear as to whether the company will actually pursue this Chinese whisper.
With the screen size in mind, if anything is to come of it then this could suggest that Apple may be slyly edging towards the world of the 'phablet'. The larger-than-life smartphones have been explored by rival companies – most notably Samsung – but Apple has steered well clear so far.
Only time will tell if any of this will come into fruition, and if it does only then will we know if this is a good move or a technical 'scrape-of-the-barrel' for the iPhone.

A proposal from the European Commission could see mobile roaming charges scrapped for calls, texts and data access by the middle of 2014, Mobile News has reported.
Designed to encourage the merging of European operators, the body is made up of representatives from each of the EU’s 27 members. It is also hoped that such a move would enable operators to invest in the improvements of their networks.
Should the proposal come to fruition and mobile roaming charges be binned altogether across the EU, holidaymakers would no longer have to pay anymore to use their phone abroad than they would at home.
However, according to a source cited by the Telegraph, European officials forecast that operator revenues could drop by two per cent if the charges are indeed scrapped.
News of the proposal has been warmly received by comparison site uSwitch.com, stating that the move would help prevent mobile users from being stung by shock bills.
uSwitch telecoms expert Ernest Doku said: “Our research shows that 15% of Brits have unfortunately arrived home from holiday to massive phone bills – averaging £120 each on top of their typical monthly bills – due to roaming charges racked up on foreign turf.
“For those jetsetting within the EU where roaming charges are now capped, there is some protection, but 12 per cent of Brits holidaying in Europe have still managed to clock up big roaming bills.
“Scrapping all roaming charges in EU countries is a real win for consumers. Not only will we be better protected from bill shock, but the doors will be open to foreign networks looking for a piece of the market in Britain, which could mean cheaper mobile deals too.
“But Brits still need to be extremely careful when using mobiles in non-EU countries where there is still no protection at all.â€

Samsung's CEO has hit back at claims that sales of the device are slowing down, all be it in unconvincing fashion.
A report issued by JPMorgan last week indicated that sales of the Galaxy S4 had begun to slow, which subsequently resulted in Samsung's share price slipping by six per cent.
Within the report, JPMorgan estimated sales of the device to be "20-30 per cent lower" than Samsung had previously expected.
Following the report, Samsung CEO JK Shin has denied the claims, stating sales of the S4 are "fine".
Now, with all of the eccentric personalities in the technology world, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone willing to describe anything as "fine", let alone their own product that's been accused of slow sales.
But that's exactly what Shin said to the Korea Times: "I can say sales of the Galaxy S4 smartphone are fine. It's been selling well."
No matter how you look at it, fine is fine. Exceptionally fine? Spectacularly fine? It doesn't exactly instill confidence and is guaranteed to cause more concern than it calms.
Still, the abundance of Galaxy S4 spin-off devices that Samsung has recently revealed would indicate that the firm is still firmly behind the device, even if the new devices cannibalise the sales of the original S4.
Shin also let slip that Samsung had another product to unveil at its Premier event later this month, describing the device as the firm's "latest mirrorless camera that runs on Google's Android software."
That build-up would all but confirm it well indeed be the debut of the long awaited Samsung Galaxy Camera 2.

Google is planning to release Android 5.0 this year, complete with support for low-end smartphones.
Vr-zone.com reports that the next iteration of the Android mobile operating system, 5.0 key Lime Pie, will arrive in late October.
According to anonymous sources, 5.0 will be an optimised OS for all devices and including those with as little as 512BM of RAM.
This October marks the fifth anniversary of Android, and what with the Motorola X smartphone expected to launch around the same time, it seems the ideal moment to unveil the fifth iteration of the Android OS.
According to the report, Google will release a 4.3 Jelly Bean update first in late August before the Key Lime Pie is announced, which will have support for low-energy Bluetooth connectivity.

It's hard to imagine but EA has managed to cheese off a significant portion of the massive Scrabble app community since taking over the reins in May.The worst of it is that players' Scrabble app histories have been wiped, reported the BBC - some being years old. The dictionary has also changed from Chambers (Christian Donlan tells me Chamers, for years, was the official Scrabble dictionary) to Collins (which he had less kind things to say about). Also, boards no longer refresh after a turn.Previous owner Mattel apologised but said the changes meant people could play in six languages now, customise their boards and, you lucky things, pay for an ad-free version. The result? Apparently more people are playing - and paying? This picture has 1731 comments.
"Who wants to play it in six languages?" retorted player Helen Hawkins to the BBC."I've been playing for over four years, I had 5000 games on my statistics, I'd won 71 per cent of them, I had my best scores recorded - and now it's all lost."Her outrage is far from isolated - the Facebook page for the Scrabble app is awash with harsh criticism of the update. But rather than address fans' concerns, the Scrabble app Facebook page ploughs on seemingly oblivious, posting adverts for its game."Stop these silly photos and sort out the game," demanded Thomas Superdad Macrazy (what a fabulous name) 20 hours ago - a comment that has 238 Likes."The scrabble moment when u realise how only pure arrogance can fly in the face of such overwhelming opposition to the new format.. and STILL you just give the lot of us The Finger! Aw well!" an exasperated Andrea Appleyard wrote - a comment that garnered 300 Likes.James Bradley got right to the point: "We really hate the new game, please bring back the old one." And he bagged 357 Likes.EA couldn't be reached by the BBC for comment but Mattel could."We are sorry we weren't able to please everybody," a spokesperson said."The number of people playing has also increased significantly since the update."We produce the board game but we're not experts in electronics."

The Ouya journey, according to founder Julie Uhrman, will never have a firm conclusion. But, we'd say having retail units enter production and shipping to mega stores like Game Stop and Best Buy represents at least the culmination of this particular story arc. With only a few weeks to go before the retail launch, the company brought the final console, controller and packaging to E3 for a press tour. The console itself is unchanged from the version that shipped to Kickstarter backers, except that it wont have contributor names etched on the side. The final tweaks heading into production have focused on the controller and the software. Visually the gamepad is exactly the same, but a number of small changes have be made to the various components to address feedback from early adopters and reviewers. The holes around the four face buttons have been widened to prevent them from sticking and, no matter how hard we tried, we could not get the O, U, Y or A to get wedged under the face plate. The right thumb stick also had a tendency to get caught on early versions of the controller, thanks to a small amount of glue that leaked into the area. That issue has supposedly been resolved, and in our time with the production model we had no problems with the analog stick.

Apple could be looking to buttress its iPhone range considerably over the next year by adding larger 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch models and a cheaper, $99 handset with a wider range of colors, according to sources from Reuters. The media outlet added that the moves are still under discussion, but represent an attempt to gain back share from arch-competitor Samsung, which has flooded the market with so-called phablets like the Galaxy Note II along with a wide range of inexpensive handsets -- neither of which Apple currently makes. That jibes with earlier rumors of a budget, plastic-bodied iPhone, and CEO Tim Cook didn't exactly deny it when asked if the company was interested in large-screen phones. Still, the manufacturing sources said it's unclear whether the company will actually proceed with any of those plans -- meaning the information should be taken with a very large dose of salt.
Update: We reached out to Reuters for a little more clarification on the $99 price for the lower-end device. While they're unsure, they believe that to be a subsidized price.

It appears that we were spot-on about yesterday's teaser, as AT&T has officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active this morning. Available in stores or online starting June 21st, you'll be able to grab one of your very own for $199.99 on a two-year commitment. As we mentioned yesterday, the "life-proof" IP67-certified handset will come in Dive Blue (pictured above) and Urban Gray; there's no mention of Flame Orange, sadly. As a recap, the Active features Android 4.2, a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, a 5-inch 1080p TFT LCD panel, microSD slot with support for up to 64GB, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (no word on how much is user-accessible), a 2,600mAh battery and an 8MP rear camera with 2MP front-facing cam. Dimension-wise, the Active measures at 139.65 x 71.25 x 9.1mm and weighs 5.29 ounces (150g) -- not too shabby for a tough device.
While AT&T acknowledged that the device shouldn't be considered "rugged," it's still technically a durable smartphone that takes advantage of a sealed water-resistant cover which will protect the phone in up to one meter of H2O for thirty minutes, and even features a special camera setting called Aqua Mode which is designed to let you take some nifty underwater shots. If you're eager to get the sales process started as soon as possible, AT&T will be offering pre-orders of the device beginning tomorrow.

Poll reveals the majority of UK adults fail to secure their phone
Following recent data released from the Office for National Statistics which displayed a rise in mobile phone theft in the UK, mobileinsurance.co.uk carried out a poll asking 2,214 UK adults whether or not they had a lock screen PIN function on their phone and if they use it.
89 per cent of those asked said they had the function, however the majority said that they didn't use the security settings - 16 per cent saying they didn't know how to, whilst 44 per cent said that they didn't feel the need and 21 per cent worried that they'd forget the code.
Amongst those who used the PIN code and were happy to divulge their code, it was discovered that the most common number was 2580 - straight down the middle of the keypad.
The aim of the poll was to discover what measures Britons took or didn't take to protect their devices from both theft and damage. less than a third of participants owned a protective case and 42 per cent admitted to being disregardful when putting their phone down, or leaving it on display and at risk of being stolen.
Jason Brockman, Director of mobileinsurance.co.uk said: "It's really important that people do what they can to keep their phones safe in all scenarios, particularly due to the fact that the cost of handsets is sky rocketing.
You wouldn't risk not having a PIN on your credit card if it wasn't compulsory and letting a thief get their hands on £400 worth of mobile phone is no different to allowing a criminal to dip their hand into your bank account and take some free money."
It is certainly becoming increasingly important to protect your devices as much as possible, not just due to the price but also the content and personal information we store on them. Maybe we could create a catchy quote to encourage people to be safer, something like 'it's not a sin, use a PIN!' (That one's for free)

Tired of not measuring up to Samsung and its Galaxy devices, Apple is reportedly looking to add a few inches of its own.
A report from Reuters indicates that Apple is exploring the possibility of larger iPhone devices, with two potential devices in particular sizing in at 4.7 and 5.7-inches.
Citing sources from the Asian supply chain, Reuters claims Apple is mulling over the introduction of "at least two bigger iPhones next year".
The report continues to state that "suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens" but emphasised that the plans were "still under discussion."
Given the success Samsung has seen with its large-screen devices, Apple's motive for larger iPhone devices is clear: screen envy.
Samsung's Galaxy Note device boasts a 5.5-inch screen, whilst the Galaxy S 4 sports a five-inch display, so a 5.7-inch iPhone would not only nestle itself amongst these devices, but outperform them entirely.
As consumers increasingly opt for phablet and large-screen smartphones, it would appear Apple has finally realised that it's not all about getting smaller – as rumours surrounding an iPhone mini continue to circulate.

Smartphone users have long cried out to see their favourite Nintendo franchises appear on their mobile device, but there's only one thing standing in their way: Nintendo.
The firm's president, Satoru Iwata, has crushed the hopes of a Ninty generation by reaffirming that characters such as Mario and Zelda won't be appearing on the likes of iOS or Android anytime soon.
Whilst highlighting the short-term benefits that Nintendo would reap from porting its key franchises over to mobile devices, Iwata stressed that such a move would only hurt the firm in years to come.
Talking to the Wall Street Journal, Iwata said: "If I was only concerned about managing Nintendo for this year and next year - and not about what the company would be like in 10 or 20 years - then I'd probably say that my point of view is nonsense."
"But if we think 20 years down the line, we may look back at the decision not to supply Nintendo games to smartphones and think that is the reason why the company is still here," continued the Nintendo chief."
Both fans and shareholders of the company have called out for such a move to take place, as the smartphone market continues to hurt the handheld games market – a major area of business for Nintendo – with smartphones, tablets and their associated app stores luring gamers away from dedicated gaming devices, such as Nintendo's 3DS console.
For now, at least, gamers wanting to see their favourite plummer on their iPhone will have to remain disappointed.

Fancy catching up on The Jeremy Kyle Show without sitting through adverts for and hair cream? ITV is offering iOS users a premium upgrade for ITV Player that'll cut the commercials and provide simulcasts of ITV3 and 4 over 3G and WiFi. The upgrade will set you back £3.99 per month and is part of the company's attempts at testing business models that don't involve Ant or Dec. The Cowell-factory is also boasting that the iOS edition of the app has been downloaded more than seven million times, a tribute to the enduring popularity of Downton Abbey.

We already knew Samsung's 8-inch Galaxy Note would be coming to the United States, but only as a WiFi variant. Fortunately for US hopefuls craving a version that's capable of getting an actual data connection outside the safety of the nearest wireless hotspot, AT&T will be bringing an LTE-enabled version to its network in the coming weeks -- though this appears to be an exclusive to the operator. We're still waiting to hear about pricing, but anyone interested in grabbing this particular tablet should be taking a close look at their bank accounts right about now. Full press release and video after the break.

Another Android gaming console at this year's E3? Kind of, sort of, yeah. But Unu's (née Snakebyte) looking to set itself apart from the OUYAs, Gamesticks and M.O.J.O.sof the world (to name but a few) by becoming the "Swiss Army knife" of the space. The device isn't so much a console as tablet that plugs into your TV, meaning that you can do pretty much whatever you can do on a standard Android slate (which, arguably, you can also do with Mad Catz's device, but we digress).
The tablet itself runs Android 4.2, display through a seven-inch, 1280 x 800 IPS screen. The rear sports a brushed aluminum surface and a 5-megapixel camera (with a 2.0 module on the front). Inside, you've got 8GB of storage and a 1.6GHz quad-core chip. Unu does Bluetooth 4.0 and has two micro-USB ports, a microSD slot and, most importantly, a mini-HDMI port, which lets you turn the thing into a living room console of sorts, by connecting it to your HDTV. If you're feeling fancy, you can go in for the docking station, which does video out and charging -- and also props the tablet up nicely, so you can watch the same thing on two displays at the same time.
