Researchers of the BenchLab project at UMass Amherst have discovered a bug in the browser of the Samsung S3. If you browse a Web page that has multiple versions of the same image (for mobile, tablet, desktop, etc...) like most Wikipedia pages for example, instead of downloading one image at the right resolution, the phone will download all versions of it. A page that should be less than 100K becomes multiple MB! It looks like a bug in the implementation of the srcset HTML tag, but all the details are in the paper to be presented at the IWQoS conference next week. So far Samsung didn't acknowledge the problem though it seems to affect all S3 phones. You'd better have an unlimited data plan if you browse Wikipedia on an S3!

While the new 16 GB iPod Touch released Thursday features the same 4-inch Retina display and dual-core A5 processor as its other variants, the newest, cheapest iPod Touch lacks a rear camera and comes in just two colors black and silver. Apple is reportedly pursuing a similar strategy with the iPhone, as reports from the past several months have pointed to development of a 'low-cost iPhone' with basic features to be sold at a lower price point.

DARPA announced a sensor reference system device based on a new Android-based sensor processing core called the ADAPTable Sensor System (a.k.a. ADAPT). The initial ADAPT reference device, called UGS (unattended ground sensor), is designed as the basis for a series of lower-cost, more upgradable sensor devices for military applications. The ADAPT program is part of larger effort by the U.S. military to reduce the costs and speed production schedules for military equipment, using an ODM process similar to that of the commercial smartphone industry. Potential applications for the technology include swarms of hive-mind UAVs or robots, or perimeter security sensors hidden at a deployed airfield or underground, all networked together and capable of transmitting video.

SDK embraces Fortumo payment platform for 'easy access' to in app purchasing
A new Corona plug-in offers users of the eponymous SDK access to in-app purchasing in their developments for Android and Nook.
The plug-in for the Corona-SDK comes about as a result of a partnership with Fortumo, which promises to bring easy-to-access IAP support to developers looking to monetize mobile projects. Te plug-in can be implements with just a few lines of code.
“Fortumo is excited to offer additional monetisation solutions to Corona Labs’ thriving community of developers,” said Martin Koppel, COO of Fortumo. “The mobile industry is seeing an explosive growth of in-app transactions and Fortumo allows developers to capitalise on this trend. Developers need to make only one integration to go live with payments in the NOOK Store, Google Play and any third-party app stores.”
“There’s an incredible opportunity for developers to generate revenue with Corona-powered apps and games,” added David Rangel, COO of Corona Labs. “Partnering with Fortumo gives our developers an option that performs extremely well across various markets. The addition of NOOK in-app purchases is also highly welcome by a large number of Corona developers that have built popular content for the platform.”

Carphone Warehouse reveals that many iPhone users are no switching their allegiance.
Carphone Warehouse has today revealed that 30 per cent of its Samsung Galaxy S4 sales are from consumers switching from iPhone, Mobile News has reported.
The retailer also revealed that 90 per cent of Samsung Galaxy S4 buyers would recommend the Korean manufacturer’s new flagship device to others.
Already, the Galaxy S4 has enjoyed record-breaking success, shifting more than 10 million units in under one month.
“We’ve seen phenomenal demand for the Samsung Galaxy S4 since its launch in April. Customers are demanding a wider choice of handsets from manufacturers and Carphone Warehouse stats show that 30 per cent of our S4 sales were from customers moving from an iPhone to an S4,” said Carphone Warehouse customer solutions group director Claire Winstanley.
“Customers who’ve made the change love their S4 handsets and 90 per cent of them have said they would recommend them to a friend or family.”

Well, this is a little out of the blue. Apple has just outed a new iPod touch that falls in behind its existing 2012 models. We're hesitant to call this the sixth generation, as it's more of a stripped down variant of what's already available. Not many of the specs have changed: the dimensions are identical, you're still getting a 4-inch Retina display, and the same dual-core A5 processor hums away inside. While the new model still has the front-facing FaceTime HD camera, it's lost the 5-megapixel main shooter, and a little bit of weight, to boot (0.06 ounces). Storage capacity has taken a hit, however. The other iPod touch comes in 32GB and 64GB varieties and a number of colors, but this new model sports just 16GB of storage and only comes in silver. Those lesser specs come at a lesser price, and you can snag one from Apple's online store now for $229, with retail locations getting it tomorrow. We reckon this won't be the only Apple product people'll be talking about today. Prepare for the cheaper iPhone rumor to make the rounds again.

We know that Samsung's tablet line is growing quickly when the Galaxy Note 8.0 is shipping, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 exists and an 8-inch Tab 3 may come soon. The company must want to drive the point home, however: it just passed another slate, the GT-P5210, through the FCC's approval process. The filing carries few details, but it's enough to confirm a 10-inch screen, a WiFi-only variant and a model name in line with the Galaxy Tab 3 family (the 7-inch unit is the P3210). There aren't any telltale signs of a rumored Atom processor, though. We're mostly wondering when the P5210 will launch in earnest. Logic suggests that Samsung's June 20th event is a good candidate, but the tech giant doesn't always wait for big occasions to release big devices.

For those of you who wouldn't touch a tactile screen if we gave you one, Verizon's just put a smartphone up for pre-order that might be preferable: the Blackberry Q10. Big Red will carry the regular black model and has exclusive dibs on the dapper white Q10we saw earlier, both of which are on pre-order for $200 with a two-year activation, or $600 sans commitment. On top of real QWERTY chiclets, you'll get a 3.1-inch, 720 x 720 Super AMOLED touch display, dual-core Qualcomm CPU, 2GB of RAM and Blackberry 10.0. As a bonus, Verizon's estimated ship date of June 6th might even line up nicely with the imminent arrival of a certain new version of the OS, too.

BlueStacks is taking on OUYA in a big way, having announced its Android-poweredGamePop game console a few weeks ago. The company wouldn't give specifics on how much the device would cost when it was first unveiled, although it offered an option to get the console for free through May -- provided you were willing to subscribe to the $7-per-month service for at least a full year, which gives you full access to a large number of paid and free mobile games. Today, BlueStacks announced that the free offer has been extended through June, after which time the console can be yours for $129. What's more, the service has inked partnerships with more gaming developers, adding at least another $50 worth of titles to its overall catalog. One such company is COM2US, which will feature its very own channel in GamePop's UI. Head to the source link to get your pre-order in.

The iPad is no stranger to nostalgia-filled gaming sessions, and today Apple's platform is welcoming yet another popular OG title into its hefty ranks. More specifically, we're referring to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a game which will surelybring a great deal of excitement to those who were avid fans of the original BioWare RPG back in the day. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is up for grabs now, but be prepared to pay a slight premium for it, since the near-2GB App Store download costs a cool 10 bucks. But hey, not too bad if you'd like to use an iPad to show your custom-made character what life was like before the Galactic Empire even existed.

An iPhone 5 revamp and a low-cost model.
Apple is currently working two new phones for an unveiling in Q3, according to DigiTimes. The big reveal and shiping may potentially come as soon as June, as suppliers are reportedly gearing up for production of 20 million units a month.
Like the iPhone 4 and 4S scenario, Apple is thought to introduce a revamped iPhone 5, which may annoy those hoping for something meatier.
Meanwhile, the company is expected to enter new territory with a low-cost handset that will feature hardware similar to the 4S, though with a lower display and processor. It follows an earlier rumour that Apple is working on a $99 iPhone made from plastic parts.
With a June reveal on the calendar, sources reckon shipments of all iPhone will reach up to 120 million units in H2 2013. In other news, Apple's rival Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy S4 Mini– a shrunken version of its new flagship handset, which has reached ten million sales in under a month.

Apple has surprised the tech world with the launch of a new iPod Touch, which drops a number of features in order to shave down its price.
The seemingly entry-level iPod Touch maintains many of the same specs of its predecessor, still using the same dual-core A5 processor and four-inch Retina display.
But whilst the new Touch maintains the HD front-facing camera, it drops the device's main five-megapixel camera, one of its biggest omissions.
Perhaps Apple felt that incorporating a second camera on the device was overkill, but it's something that fans of the device are likely to miss.
The device is also quite stingy on storage capacity. Whilst previous devices offered a choice of both 32GB and 64GB, this latest generation provides just 16GB.
As a result of the loss of features, the latest iPod Touch weighs in less too, dropping 0.06 ounces.
However, despite the losses, consumers can expect to pay a smaller price for the device with Apple pricing the newest Touch at just $229.

Samsung has today introduced the Galaxy S4 Mini, a little over a month after the record-breaking S4 smartphone was launched.
Many were expected the 4.3-inch Mini to be unveiled atSamsung’s ‘Premiere’ event on June 20th, but the Korean manufacturer has caught the tech industry off guard by announcing it today (May 30th).
Two days ago it appeared that Samsung had accidentally posted details of the S4 Mini on its UK apps page, and while there was not official confirmation at the time, today is the official announcement of the latest smartphone in the Galaxy range.
Sporting a qHD Super AMOLED display, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini comes equipped with a 1.7GHz dual core processor and weighs just 107g.
The device also comes with an 8MP rear-facing camera, as well as a 1.9MP HD front-facing one. Special camera features include Sound&Shot, which stores sounds and images together, Panorama Shot, which allows you to take a full view of what you are seeing, and Story Album, which automatically arranges photos in a smart format. Snaps taken by the Galaxy S4 Mini are automatically gathered and saved according to your timeline, geo-tagging information or specific event, to create a photo album.
Simon Stanford, vice president of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, commented: “Demand for the Galaxy S4 has been phenomenal since it launched in April and we hope to build on this success with the Galaxy S4 Mini. This new handset is the ideal smartphone companion for anyone who wants a compact device packed with innovation.”
While details of the availability of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini are yet to be announced, the firm has revealed that the device will come in a 4G LTE version, 3G version, and 3G Dual Sim version.
Samsung has also revealed that media and invited partners will be able to get hands-on with the Galaxy S4 Mini at the company’s 2013 Premiere for Galaxy & ATIV, in London on Thursday, June 20th.

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has revealed that the firm will launch a smartphone called the Moto X in 2013.
In an interview at All Things Digital’s D11 conference, Woodside commented on some of the features the new handset will sport: “Motorola has always been good at managing power on the device, but we're really good at managing sensors. We know when it's in your pocket, we know when it's in your hand, and it’s going to know when you want to take a picture and fire up the cameras.”
During the interview, Woodside claimed to have the Moto X in his pocket but refused to offer it up for public viewing. However he did say that the response has been great from carriers that have seen the new phone.
A short while after the interview Motorola confirmed the news on its website’s media centre, saying the handset will be available in the summer.
The firm has stated that the Moto X will be the first smartphone assembled in the USA.
“There were a few reasons why we decided to do this. There are several business advantages to having our Illinois and California-based designers and engineers much closer to our factory,” readsMotorola’s blog.
“For instance, we’ll be able to iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly. And as a part of Google we’re being encouraged to take big bets on things that make a difference.”
It is thought that the device will come with a 4.8-inch display and is likely to run on Android 4.3.

Spike Chunsoft released 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors on iOS this week, and the room escape thriller is fleeing onto iPads and iPhones in Japan. However, it's not a complete port of the DS game which came to North America in 2010. Spike Chunsoft chose to remove the puzzle gameplay on iOS, placing the focus on the story as a visual novel.
In the puzzles' stead, the iOS version offers a comic book-style presentation (see below) and a new flowchart, similar to the one in sequel Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, that lets you jump to different points within the plot.
While the iOS version is currently Japan-only, 999 lead writer and director Kotaro Uchikoshi said on Twitter that he thinks an English version "will also be released by autumn." There's no official word from Spike Chunsoft as yet, but given how both 999 and Virtue's Last Reward made their way west, a successful breakout across the ocean looks promising.

Apple's head honcho Tim Cook is chatting up Android's growth explosion, and it turns out he's not flustered. "Do I look at that? Of course, I don't have my head stuck in the sand," said Cook." But for us, winning has never been about having the most." Instead, he stands by the old Apple line of quality versus quantity. "Arguably, we make the best PC, but we don't make the most," he added. "We made the best music player, and we wound up making the most -- but we didn't initially."
Rather than focus on install base, Cupertino's chief turned to usage stats to illustrate their supremacy, noting that their slates are the most popular for browsing the web. "You can look at tablet web market share in North America," Cook said. "Almost every study I see has the iPad in the 80s (percentage)." Before even broaching the subject of Google's mobile OS, Cook cited NetApp figures that show 59 percent of worldwide web traffic from smartphones and tablets comes from iOS devices. We're sure the folks in Mountain View are content with quantity, though we'd hazard a guess they enjoy quality as well.
