Last week, Microsoft's YouTube app for Windows Phone came under fire for not adhering to some of Google's requirements. The result was an ultimatum from Mountain View, requesting that Microsoft make the necessary tweaks by May 22nd or pull the app entirely. Today, which just so happens to be that aforementioned date, Microsoft has released a new version of its YouTube app for Windows Phone. This time around, video downloads are disabled -- users who already have the app won't retain this functionality, either -- but one important feature is still missing: ads. It's unclear whether Google approved of this update, though that does seem unlikely, but we've reached out to Microsoft for comment. In the meantime, WP users can nab the new app via the Windows Phone store.
Update: Microsoft responded with the same line it gave to other news outlets such asZDNet. It doesn't exactly address our questions, but it's proof that Redmond is in damage-control mode. Head past the break for the full statement.

The Vine app is all the rage these days. It lets you shoot six-second videos on your iPhone and easily post them on the Internet. The problem is that [Sean Hodgins] doesn’t find the time limit to be useful for traditional video. But you can cram a lot more info into a half-dozen seconds if you make it a time-lapse

Samsung is set to add to its portfolio of giant smartphones with its new Mega device, which will reportedly land in the UK in July.
Seemingly unhappy with having only the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note in its 'Enormous Smartphone' category, Samsung is set to one-up itself with the aptly named Galaxy Mega, which boasts a 6.3-inch screen.
In addition to a July release, multiple online retailers have begun pricing the device, with both Expansys and rival etailer Clove offering pre-orders of the device for ÂŁ459.99.
Whilst that's a £100 discount on the newly launched Galaxy S4, the reduction comes with its own cost – diminished specifications.
The 6.3-inch display of the Mega is only 720p TFT, a significant downgrade of the AMOLED full HD screen used the the S4. Meanwhile, the front and rear camera of the Mega are only eight and 1.9 megapixels respectively.
A saving grace of the Mega is that it will still run the latest Android 4.2.2 operating system, and will be powered by an 3,200mAh battery – with size not exactly an issue with the Mega's hulking frame.
For those interested in the Mega, you've got until July to find some jeans with bigger pockets.

Sony has announced that its new 10.1-inch Xperia Tablet Z will be released on May 30th.
The Japanese firm claims the new device is the world’s slimmest tablet. It measures 6.9mm thick, weighs just 495 grams and has the same water-resistant capabilities as the Sony Xperia Z smartphone.
The tablet runs Android 4.1.2 and is equipped with Qualcomm S4 Pro 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, 10.1-inch 1920x1200 touchscreen display, a 2GB RAM, 2MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing one.
“Keeping with the promise to launch the Xperia Tablet Z in Q2 2013, Sony introduced the tablet extension of its flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia Z,” the company said in a media statement this morning.
“The Xperia Tablet Z is a game-changer in terms of its design and diversity of communication and entertainment offerings,” commented Kazutoyo Araki, General Manager, IT Marketing Division, Sony Middle East and Africa.
“From Sony’s innovative One-Touch technology to a slim, durable, waterproof exterior, the Xperia Tablet Z is an exemplary Android device that will help us remain a frontrunner in the industry. We know this from the incredible success of its predecessor, the Xperia Z, features of which have been seamlessly captured in the tablet.”
O2 has today begun accepting pre-orders for the device and is offering the most expensive LTE model ahead of its 4G rollout later this year. This means consumers will have to pay out ÂŁ499.99 for the tablet before signing up for a data tariff.
O2 will ship orders on May 30th, as long as the device is ordered before 4pm on May 29th.

Six months after promising to integrate sight recognition technology into its Here suite of apps, Nokia has finally updated Here Maps with LiveSight. The update is available today in the Windows Phone app store and requires Windows Phone 8. By tapping a button in HERE Maps, users can enter LiveSight mode, which will scan the surrounding area and pull up relevant information about nearby locations, like addresses, phone numbers and ratings. Lumia owners familiar with Nokia's City Lensapp will recognize the virtual signs attached to buildings viewed through the camera display and the Here Maps version of LiveSight appears to have similar functionality -- including Here's strongest selling point, offline access. If you want to see LiveSight in action, you can watch Nokia's preview video after the break.

Developers using Marmalade SDK can now add Google Play game services to Android games.
Cross-platform development specialist Marmalade has today (May 21st) announced its support for Google Play games services, meaning that developers using the Marmalade SDK can now add said services to their Android games.
The extended features have already been implemented by German development studio Art of Bytes, whose game GRave Defense HD - the first Marmalade game to make these new Google features available to gamers - was created with Marmalade and now includes this functionality in its Android version.
Announced at Google I/O, Google’s annual developer conference, Google Play game services offers a new suite of integrated social gaming features to holders of existing Google accounts, across both Android and iOS.
Among the features offered as part of the new service are online leaderboards, achievements, social game discovery as well as real-time and asynchronous multiplayer features.
To begin with, the Marmalade SDK extension will support achievements and leaderboards on Android, with future updates planned to implement additional features on both Android and iOS.
Tim Closs, CTO, Marmalade, commented: “We’re excited to be launching Marmalade’s Google Play game services integration so soon after the service’s release at Google’s I/O conference. I think we’re going to see rapid adoption of Google Play game services from both consumers and developers, and I can’t wait to see how our community makes use of these cool new features.”
Tanja Kobzar, product manager at Art of Bytes, also said: “We are thrilled to be using Marmalade to adopt Google Play game services early and give our players the possibility to link their achievements, scores and progress to their accounts, see how good their friends are in this and other games. We are going to integrate Google Play game services to all our titles."

Following the leak of a number of spin-off Samsung Galaxy smartphones yesterday, images of the S4 Active have surfaced online.
Uncovered by GSMArena, the images reveal the long-rumoured shock and water-resistant handset, complete with its tougher outer shell.
In addition to the device's appearance, the leaked pictures also confirmed speculation of the Active's specifications, with the device shown to be powered by a quad-core 1.9GHz processor and Adreno 320 GPU.
The Active will also sport the same five-inch, 1080p screen as the original Galaxy S4. However, the device will incorporate a downgraded 8MP rear camera.

Dell’s USB stick-sized Android PC called Project Ophelia is set to start shipping in July.
Using Dell’s Wyse PocketCloud software, the device will plug into a display’s HDMI port and run applications or access files stored remotely.
With WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, Project Ophelia may catch the eye of users who do most of their computing on the Web.
The thumb-sized PC can turn any screen or display into a PC, gaming machine or TV set-top box. Users will be able to run Android games or stream movies form Hulu or Netflix, as well as downloaded content form the Google Play store.
First introduced at CES in January, Dell is set to demonstrate Ophelia on 19-inch and 55-inch screens at next week’s Cirtix Synergy conference in Los Angeles, reports PC World.
There hasn’t been many specs unveiled at this point but the device will run a version of Android 4 OS to support web browsing, social networking, media playback and Android apps.
The 'PC-on-a-stick' is due to ship in July with a $100 price tag.

Apple is set to begin work on the next iPad, which will feature a slimmer, lighter design following the success of the iPad mini.
Digitimes reports that production of the iPad 5 will begin in July, with Apple opting for a slimmer design, which will be up to between 25 and 33 per cent lighter than its predecessor.
It's understood that the new iPad will incorporate glass within its Retina display, which is made possible by the use of new touch sensor technology. Meanwhile, a slimmer backlighting device will also decrease the device's bulk.
As Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference draws ever closer, expect speculation surrounding the latest iOS devices to heat up, with the rumour mill already in full swing surrounding a potential reveal of new MacBook devices at the event.
Of course, in traditional Apple fashion, all of the speculation surrounding these devices is yet to be confirmed – and don't expect that to change until June 10th, at least.

Samsung didn't stray far from its comfort zone when designing the Galaxy S 4, and now a leaked build of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean for the S III makes it even harder to distinguish the older flagship from the newer one. The folks at SamMobile got their mitts on a test firmware build and, better yet, have combed through it to see what's new. As you may know, the S 4 ships with 4.2.2 under a TouchWiz layer, so it's not surprising to hear most of the features new to this S III build are on the S 4 already: an updated version of S Voice, more lock screen options / unlock effects, new display modes, a redesigned settings interface, voice control, and more. SamMobile has put together a video walkthrough of the build (embedded below), and you'll find an expanded changelog and software screenshots at the source link. Apparently, the firmware "works perfectly," so if you'd rather not wait through the (often lengthy) carrier approval process, you can download it for your S III right now (flashing required, of course).

A stock GS4 may look virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor, but it looks like Samsung's got a new variant of its flagship phone that'll bring it some much-needed visual flair. The folks at GSM Arena unearthed photos of a GT-I9295 model (allegedly called the GS4 Active) sporting a bright red shell with black inserts at the top and bottom and a trio of physical buttons on its chin. If the results returned by the AnTuTu benchmark are to be believed, the phone's equipped with standard GS4 fixins: a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.9Ghz and an Adreno 320 GPU (aka, a Snapdragon 600 SoC) and a 1920 x 1080 display. Naturally, there's no word on pricing, carrier support or an arrival date, but there are a couple more photos of the handset at the source.

Market trending free-to-play as last year has seen players spend eight times as much from within programs
[h=3]Google[/h]
Conventional wisdom says the mobile market is going free-to-play in a big way, but an Inside Mobile Appsreport from last week's Google I/O conference has provided some numbers to show just how dramatic the trend has been. At the conference, Google Play product manager for commerce and monetization Ibrahim Elbouchikhi noted that the storefront's in-app revenues grew 700 percent in the last year.
Additionally, Google Play games business development head Bob Meese emphasized for the audience how drastically the market was shifting toward free-to-play models. Meese noted that the vast majority of top grossing apps on the Google Play store are free-to-play, with the single biggest exception being Minecraft: Pocket Edition.
"We're not saying you need to push everything free-to-play, however also recognize the dominant trend toward free-to-play," Meese said.
Even non-game apps are benefitting from in-app-purchase models. In February, music streaming service Pandora implemented a way for users to subscribe from within the Android app, and saw revenues on Google Play jump nearly 400 percent month-over-month.

Jolla, the Finnish company that continued Nokia's work on the MeeGo mobile platform, announced details of its first smartphone on Monday. Availability for the Jolla device is expected by year end and can be pre-ordered now; the phone will be priced at no more than €399 (US $512.26). The Jolla hardware looks similar to that of Nokia's Lumia, with a clean, button-less front face that houses the 4.5-inch touchcscreen. The phone will use a dual-core processor and support 4G LTE in some regions. Internal storage tops out at 16 GB, but can be expanded via microSD card. The phone also includes an 8 megapixel rear camera with auto focus. The phone is also 'Android app compliant' which, in a move similar to that of BlackBerry, can help with available apps at launch.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 smartphone is set to hit sales in excess of ten million this week, Mobile Magazine has reported.
Despite its initial supply issues, the Korean manufacturer has backed the Galaxy S4 with its biggest marketing campaign to date. This has played a crucial role in driving sales of the company’s new flagship device.
When sales do exceed the ten million mark, it will have reached said landmark in a far quicker time than the Galaxy S3, which took 50 days to record such sales.
According to The Korean Times, Samsung Electronics co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun, said: "We are confident that we will pass more than 10 million sales of the S4 next week. It is selling much faster than the previous model S3."

Together they're strong, but Google's OS is the dominant force.
IDC has released the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, which reveals 216.2 million smartphone shipments were made in Q1 2013, rising from 152.7m the previous year.
Data shows that Android and iOS destroyed all other operating system competition in Q1 2013 and collectively secured a 92.3 per cent share of all smartphone shipments. Android was the clear leader with a 75 per cent share (162.1m devices) and Apple 17.3 per cent (37.4m).
On a year-on-year basis, Apple's share fell from 23 per cent in 2012, but its volume of shipped iPhones rose by more than two million to reach 37.4 million devices – its largest ever Q1 figures.
BlackBerry experienced severe declines, falling to 6.3 million devices and a 2.9 per cent market share from 9.7 million and 6.4 per cent in Q1 2012. Meanwhile Windows Phone bagged the third place at the expense of BlackBerry, shipping seven million devices and securing a 3.2 per cent share, compared to three million and two per cent the previous year.
Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's mobile phone team, said: "Underpinning the worldwide smartphone market is the constantly shifting operating system landscape. Android and iOS accounted for more than the lion's share of smartphones in the first quarter, but a closer examination of the other platforms reveals turnaround and demand for alternatives.
"Windows Phone has benefited from Nokia's participation, and BlackBerry's new BB10 devices have already hit a million units shipped in its first quarter of availability."
Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, added: "Windows Phone claiming the third spot is a first and helps validate the direction taken by Microsoft and key partner Nokia. Given the relatively low volume generated, the Windows Phone camp will need to show further gains to solidify its status as an alterative to Android or iOS."

Speculation continues to grow surrounding the release of refreshed MacBook models, as both US and UK stock of the Air and Pro devices becomes extremely limited.
First spotted by AppleInsider, multiple online retailers have removed their entire stock of the current MacBook Air device, whilst Amazon reports limited stock of multiple MacBook Pro models, and even the unavailability of others.
Historically, limited supplies of Apple devices have proven an accurate sign that a refresh of the product is likely.
As for a potential debut of these new MacBooks, that could come as soon as next month.
It's all but confirmed that Apple's next MacBook range will feature Intel's next-gen Haswell processor, which is set to debut in June.
Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference takes place soon after, which itself would be the opportune moment for the firm to unveil its latest device.
Whilst this remains nothing more than speculation at this point, all of the signs would certainly indicate Apple will release its latest range of MacBook devices sooner, rather than later.

NEC’s Medias X is the first smartphone to feature a liquid cooling solution to keep the handset’s temperature under control.
Launched as part of DoCoMo’s summer lineup in Japan, the Medias X has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor that utilises a passive heat exchange system using a graphite based radiator for heat dissipation. Liquid coolant flows through the device, connecting the two and cooling the processor.
Having a liquid-cooling system inside a phone seems a tad over the top, especially considering that the Medias X runs a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon – a processor found in a number of other smartphones.
The Medias X also comes with a 4.78-inch 1280x720 display, 13MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing one. This device is likely to only be sold in Japan, but if successful, we could be seeing much faster devices in the future that may need to use this kind of technology.
