Superdata notes that the average revenue per paying user broke the $12 barrier for the first time
Research firm Superdata has published its April report for the digital games market in the US, and while overall spending on mobile games declined slightly, notably the average revenue per paying user was up, breaking the $12 barrier for the first time.
Top mobile titles driving revenue included Marvel: War of Heroes from Mobage, which made it into the top three during April, and King's Candy Crush Saga, which displaced Supercell's Clash of Clans.
Another digital sector that fueled sales was the free-to-play MMO, which saw its audience base grow to a little under 46 million free-to-play gamers in the US. That said, the average revenue per paying user did decline slightly. Superdata said that titles like Infinite Crisis (Warner Bros/Turbine) and Gundog: Animal World War (OGPlanet) should spark more growth of the free-to-play MMO market in the near-term.
Unsurprisingly, the social games category and the pay-to-play MMO sector both saw declines. Social lost an estimated 2.7 million monthly active users while the subscription MMO market in the US saw a decline of more than 896,000 subscribers in the past three months.
All told, the digital games market contracted by almost 5 percent month-over-month, reaching $832 million. "As we reach the end of the console cycle, and the various next-gen contenders are made public, overall games sales are slowing down. Much less affected by the console life cycle, downloadable content on the PC was this month's exception, and grew almost 9 percent to $136 million month-over-month," Superdata said.

Google has announced the launch of Android Studio, a new developer suite introduced at it IO dev conference.
Android Studio is designed to offer developers a look at how their apps will look across a variety of layouts and configurations, meaning that they can see how their apps will work on tablets, smartphones and a host of other platforms.
Commenting on Android Studio, Hugo Barra, vice president of Android product management, stated: âThis is a fully featured IDE right from the get go.â
Google also announced that it will be improving its developer console, adding a number of features aimed at enabling developers to increase revenue from Android apps.
One such improvement is the addition of a section that offers advice on development and optimisation, while an app translation service will enable developers to attain professional translations via the developer console.
Meanwhile, a referral-tracking feature has been added, along with new revenue display graphs.
The improved developer console will also offer beta testing and staged rollouts, allowing developers to try out test versions of their apps before releasing them to the public.

Young UK adults are more intimate with their phones than their partners.
A stonking 94 per cent of young UK adults have admitted that they would rather live without sex for a week than spend seven days away from their mobile phone, according to a new poll from MobileInsurance.co.uk.
The survey polled 2,571 UK adults aged between 18 and 30; all of which were mobile phone owners and in a relationship.
When asked to describe how they value their mobile phones, 65 per cent confessed that they âcouldnât live without itâ, while 22 per cent said that they were âvery dependentâ on their handset.
Meanwhile, ten per cent claimed that they could âtake or leaveâ their mobile, while one per cent said that they needed it âjust occasionallyâ. Two per cent stated that they could âeasily live without itâ.
The research also aimed to find out about what people would rather live without than their phone for a weeklong period, in order to get an insight into how far Britons would go to keep their mobile phones nearby.
The full findings were as follows:
1. Sex â 94 per cent (of people said theyâd rather live without this than their mobile phone for a week)
2. TV/Film â 82 per cent
3. Car â 71 per cent
4. My partner â 62 per cent
5. Bed â 55 per cent
6. Money â 47 per cent
7. Basic meals â 45 per cent
8. House â 32 per cent
9. Any other human contact â 23 per cent
10. Own children â nine per cent
Despite so many claiming that they couldnât live without their mobile phone, only 12 per cent claimed to have an insurance policy for their mobile phone.
Jason Brockman, Director of MobileInsurance.co.uk, commented: âI think the key thing to take from this research is that almost 90 per cent of people either said they couldnât live without their mobile phone or that they were very dependent on it, yet just 12 per cent of the total respondents had an insurance policy in place in case something went wrong.
âThat seems very bizarre to me. Why not protect something if you couldnât live without it? It was intriguing to see that some people would even be willing to go without any other human contact for seven days instead of their phone and, as for the nine per cent that would go without seeing their own children for a week instead of their phone, perhaps they need to get their priorities straight!â

Android may continue to be the most popular mobile operating system in the world, but it would seem that Samsung is the one raking in the benefits.
Estimates from research firm Strategy Analytics report that the Android platform generated a $7.9 billion profit in Q1 of 2013, with $5.1 billion of that being captured by Samsung.
A closer look at the figures reveals that $5.1 billion to be a whopping 94.7 per cent share of Android's entire profits.
In second place, but by no means close, was LG and its profits of $119 million. Whilst nothing about a profit of that size is feeble, it results in just a 2.5 per cent Android profit share.
Meanwhile, rival handset makers HTC, Sony and ZTE combined for just a 2.7 per cent share.
Whilst the results would at first suggest manufacturers outside of Samsung are struggling in the market, it's simply a case of the South Korean firm's dominance as the world's leading smartphone maker.
Expect the figures to grow even further following the recent release of Samsung's flagship Galaxy s 4 device.

We've still got about an hour and 20 minutes until the Google I/O keynote begins, but we're already starting to get hints of what's to come. The company just revealed, in an indirect sort of way, that the next-gen version of Android will be Android 4.3 (as opposed to, say, 5.0). The name popped up on one of Google's developer pages, which ended up being cached despite the fact that it wasn't live for very long. Unfortunately, that page didn't reveal much in the way of actual features, so it's unclear whether the jump from 4.2 to 4.3 will be a minor one. In any case, we'll find out in 78 minutes and counting.

Google Play game developers and players alike are getting a quartet of game-changing additions today: real-time multiplayer, leaderboards, cloud saves and achievements. And that's not all -- the latter three services will function cross-platform between Android, iOS and the web. The whole initiative is called -- unsurprisingly -- "Google Play Game Services," and it's available today in a smattering of games. Unlike Apple's Game Center application, what Google's offering is backend support for developers rather than a standalone application. Think of it more like OpenFeint than Game Center -- you can sign in using your Google+ login in-game, and that login will track your identity (including leaderboard scores, achievements and saves) across various games and devices.
Any developer launching a game on the Google Play store has access to game services, though Google isn't making it an obligation. "We won't make it a mandatory exercise, or have any certification process around it," Google lead product manager Greg Hartrell told us. "We create fantastic services that allow developers to create these great game experiences, and help promote their discovery, help retain their users and keep them engaged."

On stage at I/O today, Google just announced Android Studio, an integrated development environment for building apps. Based on IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition, this new environment works as a WYSIWYG for creating applications, essentially, letting you make changes and get a preview in real time, boosting productivity and making it easier to build nice-looking apps with a bit less effort. There's a wide variety of emulators for previewing apps, so even if you don't have a particular device on hand, you can still make sure everything's working as intended. Also on display today was a new development console, offering up optimization tips, revenue graphs, beta-tester control and usage metrics pulled from analytics. All of these features will make things easier to manage for developers, giving them more time to create more polished apps that work well on a variety of Android devices.

Many have chastised Google for doing little to properly expose Android tablet apps, but it's addressing that in style: the Google Play Store now includes a dedicated section in the charts for the top tablet-native releases, all of which meet the company's design guidelines for bigger screens. The company is also bringing its recent Play Store mobile redesign to the web. It shares the same interface, but it takes advantage of the extra screen area with a sidebar that lets shoppers quickly switch between media types. Both updated portals should be accessible today.

YouTube only recently came to Windows Phone 8 as a full-fledged app, but its availability may be short-lived. According to documents obtained by The Verge, Google has requested that Microsoft remove the app from it Windows Phone Store -- and disable installations on devices -- immediately. The reason? Apparently the app didn't get Goog's stamp of approval before going live, and it blocks the ads that typically run on YouTube. Naturally, ads are an important source of revenue for both Google and no shortage of third parties, so Mountain View may not be out of line for crying foul. And that's not the only strike against Redmond: according to the cease and desist letter, YouTube on WP8 lets users download videos, in addition to streaming content that's been restricted on certain devices. Oh, and all the above-mentioned issues violate YouTube's Terms of Service. Google is giving MS until May 22nd to remove the app -- we're sure this isn't the last you'll hear on this subject.

You think 50 billion is a big number? It's certainly a bit bigger than some other numbers that spring to mind, such as 48 billion, and that in itself gives Apple something to celebrate. As is customary with these App Store milestones, whichever lucky jackanape triggered their download at just the right millisecond will receive a gift -- a $10,000 iTunes voucher, no less -- while 50 runners-up will get $500-worth of credit each.
But none of that is the really big, big news. What matters here is the rate of growth, which seems to have accelerated during the course of this year. It took 14 weeks for the App Store to get from 40 billion to 45 billion downloads between January and April, but less than 4 weeks to get from 45 to 50 billion. Now, we're totally dependent on Apple's internal stock-takers, not to mention an erratic ticker ("for illustrative purposes only"), but if those numbers are even remotely accurate then they represent something of a popularity surge.

May 16th, 2013, 01:09 Posted By: wraggster
I run a very nifty desktop utility called Rainmeter on my PC that I heartily recommend to anyone who wants to keep an eye on their system. One of its main features is it has skins that can monitor your system activity. Thanks to my numerous meters, I see all CPU, disk, memory and network activity in real time. the C: drive meter. It is a circle split down the middle, with the right half lighting up to indicate a read and the left half lighting up for write activity. The C: drive was flashing a fair amount of activity considering I had nothing loaded save Outlook and Word, plus a few background apps. At the time, I didn't have a Rainmeter skin that lists the top processes by CPU and memory. So instead, I went into the Task Manager, and under Performance selected the Resource Monitor. Under the Processes tab, the culprit showed its face immediately: AppleMobileDeviceService.exe. It was consuming a ridiculous amount of threads and CPU cycles. The only way to turn it off is to go into Windows Services and turn off the service. There's just one problem. I use an iPhone. I can't disable it. But doing so for a little while dropped the CPU meters to nothing. So I now have more motivation to migrate to a new phone beyond just having one with a larger screen. This problem has been known for years. AppleMobileDeviceService.exe has been in iTunes since version 7.3. People complained on the Apple boards more than two years ago that it was consuming up to 50% of CPU cycles, and thus far it's as bad as it always has been. Mind you, Mac users aren't complaining. Just Windows users.

New app available now from Windows Phone Store.
Windows Phone 8 users will now be able to catch up on BBC shows from the past seven days, as the BBC iPlayer app is now freely available on the Microsoft platform.
The BBC iPlayer app lets users watch BBC content from the past week on their Windows Phone 8 device via Wi-Fi or a 3G connection.
As well as being able browse the latest available content through a variety of filters, users can also flag the shows they watch the most and add them to their Favourites tab.
âThe application will enable you to catch up on your favourite BBC shows on the go,â said Dave Price, Head of BBC iPlayer. âWe know this is something that is becoming more and more popular as in March this year 30 per cent of overall requests came from mobiles or tablets, with 81 million requests in total.â
BBC radio content will also be available through the app, providing users with the option of listening to the audio whilst using other apps simultaneously.
However, the BBC iPlayer app will not be available to Windows Phone 7.5 users on account of âplatform limitations.â

As KMS Components celebrates a record start to 2013,PCR talks with sales director Steve Bland to discuss the firmâs success and the driving force behind it...
How has 2013 been for KMS so far?
Amazing. We have just been running through the numbers and it has been a record quarter for us as we run up to our 20th year.
If we continue in the vein that weâve started in this year, weâll have another increase of between 20 and 25 per cent on the previous year.
It seems that a lot of firms in consumer electronics are benefiting from healthy demand at the moment?
Yes â weâve obviously seen some new players in the consumer electronics space and I think itâs certainly giving some of us some great products.
I think itâs a breath of fresh air for everyone really, not just distribution, but for retailers and for everyone else.
Weâve been so focused on selling peripherals and accessories surrounding PCs for so long now and to be honest, the majority of the distribution channel hasnât been able to enjoy the laptop revolution that has happened within the market over the last few years.
So tablets and other new tech is giving us all a chance to move into new sectors.

Now that Nokia's launched it's metal-accented Lumia 925, you may want to know where to grab one. Well, in the UK, Vodafone will start carrying a 32GB version of the handset exclusively next month, while O2 said it'd be the only UK carrier with a white model -- which you'll be able to grab on June 13th. As for the others, Three confirmed via a tweet that it'd carry the new handset and that it would be compatible with its Ultrafast services, while EE and Orange have yet to announce anything. Meanwhile, we heard from T-Mobile that it will be the exclusive home of the 925 in the US, at least at launch. We've touched base with all the carriers for more info, so check back to see if you'll be able to grab one from your provider of choice.

We managed to grab a quick chat with Nokia's Global Head of Smartphone Marketing, Vesa Jutila, following the global launch of the Lumia 925. When asked about the still-notable absence of some mainstream apps within Windows Phone 8, Jutila was surprisingly frank. With reference to the company's Lumia series, he said that "the biggest complaint is that customers are missing the apps they want."
Nokia has been on a recent charm offensive towards Instagram, not least with a mini Twitter campaign, but it announced earlier today that a new Hipstamatic Oggl app will be headed to Microsoft's mobile OS, capable of sharing through Twitter, Facebook and, yes, Instagram. However, for users coming from other platforms, they may find some first-party favorites missing -- with things like Google+ and Amazon Cloud Playerbeing just a couple of examples. Jutila acknowledged that there were "some gaps" but said Nokia is "addressing this very strongly" with the help of Microsoft. He added:"[Developer attention] is very much driven by the absolute volume of Windows Phones in the market. That's why we're so pleased when other manufacturers also make Windows Phones."
When asked if Nokia has a strategy for a scenario in which it becomes the onlymanufacturer of Windows Phones, Jutila replied "No, we don't have a strategy for that."
Sharif Sakr contributed to this report.

We've gotten word of a new BlackBerry smartphone today, and we now also have some news about familiar one. Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have all confirmed that they'll soon be carrying the BlackBerry Q10, although some are being more specific with details than others. Verizon is saying that it will be available sometime in June (it has an exclusive on the white version), while Sprint will only go as far as to say "late summer," with neither offering a price. T-Mobile will also be rolling out the phone sometime in June, and has confirmed that it will cost $99.99 down with its new plan structure, or $579.99 if you want to buy it outright. All this follows business registation for the device, which began last month. We've yet to hear anything more from AT&T, but it has already committed to the device and will presumably be launching it in roughly the same timeframe as well.
Update: T-Mobile has reached out to let us know that while general T-Mobile customers have to wait until June, business customers can order the Q10 today, with delivery typically expected within a week.

Square just announced a new product meant to replace traditional point-of-service systems: the aptly named Square Stand. The hardware turns an iPad (2 or 3; support for the Lightning connector is coming later this year) into an all-in-one POS with an integrated card reader that accepts cash, plastic and Square Wallet payments. Available for pre-order today, the stand will set business owners back a rather steep $299, but the sleek design has a decidedly smaller footprint than the cash registers of yore, and it offers merchants real-time analytics for tracking sales via the Square Register app. Of course, if you want the full retail setup, you'll still have to spring for Square's receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer.
Though the Square Stand won't be available until July 8th, several merchants throughout the country, including Cafe Grumpy in New York City and Morelli's Ice Cream in Atlanta, will be operating the device starting tomorrow. And given Square'spartnership with Starbucks, we wouldn't be surprised if the system soon shows up at the coffee chain as well.

Just as promised, Time Warner Cable has delivered a new version of its TWC TV app for Android users that includes access to live TV streams of certain channels while away from home. That new feature is accompanied by several other tweaks, including TV mini guide filtering and expanded device support for devices running Android 2.2 and higher. Out of home streaming is still more limited than that provided by solutions like Slingbox or Cablevision's Optimum, and streaming over cellular connections are restricted to Verizon only (for now.) Despite the restrictions, the app is out now and will hopefully see them loosened in the future, subscribers can grab it now at the link below.
