Social game developer Klab is working on a "mobile version of Microsoft Studio's Age of Empires franchise" for iOS and Android. The news follows aNikkei report that claimed Microsoft agreed to a deal with Klab for various mobile versions of the former's games, including what Nikkei specified as a free-to-play version of strategy series Age of Empires.
However, in a statement issued to Polygon, Microsoft only confirmed the iOS and Android version of Age of Empires. The statement also noted certain reports "included incorrect information about additional Xbox Live-based games on iOS and Android," before adding that "there are no further announcements beyond Age of Empires at this time."
While that leaves the door ajar, at the moment Age of Empires is the one confirmed to be headed for mobiles. Microsoft's statement added the game will be initially made in English for iOS and Android, but there are plans for other languages, as well as a Windows Phone version, down the line.

Samsung may have been busy this past week with the launches of the Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy Note 8.0, but it hasn't forgotten its duties to Android programmers. It just posted the kernel source code for both the AT&T variant of the GS4 Active (the SGH-i537) as well as the LTE-equipped Note 8.0 in its American and Canadian forms (SGH-i467 and i467M). As with past releases, the source material gives developers a better understanding of the hardware; it also gives tinkerers an easier time when modifying the firmware or creating fully functional custom ROMs. Whichever camp you're in, the kernel code awaits at the links below.

Ouya backers still missing consoles as retail sells out
The Android-powered Ouya console has launched today at retail, sporting an opening retail price of $99. The launch seems to be be going well, with outlets likeAmazon having already sold out of their allotments. Unfortunately, not all of the backers of the Ouya Kickstarter have received their promised consoles.
"I am pissed," Ouya founder Julie Uhrman wrote in a backer-only Kickstarter update. "Some of you have not yet received your Ouya, and to you, I apologize. I did not promise to ship to most of you before we hit store shelves. I promised to ship to all of you. I've been reading your comments, and we are working to solve this."
Uhrman blamed Ouya's distribution partner for the delay, saying that the company delivered the systems in May.
"We paid for shipping, yet the deliveries remain incomplete. We know everyone is getting their Ouya, but it is taking longer than we expected," she added.
In the same message, Ouya head of operations Ken Stephens said backers could expect their consoles in 15 to 17 days once they're shipped from Hong Kong.
"Over the past few months, we encountered and conquered many challenges spanning both hardware and software in order to bring the best product we could to market," said Stephens. "We have tried to make sure that the challenges we faced did not impact our early supporters, but unfortunately we came up short."

Much-hyped Android console Ouya hits retail today, yet many backers of the device are yet to receive their machine.
“I am pissed,” Ouya boss Julie Uhrman stated. “Some of you have not yet received your OUYA – and, to you, I apologise. I did not promise to ship to *most* of you before we hit store shelves. I promised to ship to *all* of you. I’ve been reading your comments, and we are working to solve this.
“We delivered your OUYAs to our partner in May, and since then they have been in their custody. We paid for shipping, yet the deliveries remain incomplete. We know everyone is getting their OUYA, but it is taking longer than we expected.”
Uhrman even claims that the company has boosted its customer service team to try and help alleviate the problem.
“We are working hard to get you answers, and more importantly, to fix this,” she added. “On our end, we have tripled our customer service team so we can respond as quickly as possible to your questions (though the answer may still be that it’s in transit). We are working with our partners to resolve any administrative issues related to undelivered boxes (errors in shipping addresses, customs holds, etc.).
“I’m told that despite our best efforts, it may take another two weeks or more for some of these units to arrive.”
Ouya’s head of operations Ken Stephens added: “As you may be aware, we manufacture OUYA in mainland China with our fulfilment partner in Hong Kong who is responsible for the individual shipments to you all.
“Over the past few months, we encountered and conquered many challenges spanning both hardware and software in order to bring the best product we could to market. We have tried to make sure that the challenges we faced did not impact our early supporters, but unfortunately we came up short.
“Unfortunately, the vast majority of those who haven’t yet received OUYA are international backers. It just takes a lot longer to ship to some countries. All of these units HAVE left Hong Kong, and you have received your tracking email. So, based on the date of your shipping-confirmation email, your OUYA will arrive within 15 to 17 days from that date.
“Please accept my personal apology for not yet delivering on our promise.”
These platitudes are doing little to pacify Ouya backers, however. Here’s a selection of reactions posted to Ouya’s Facebook page:
“Hey, you're welcome, OUYA, for being an early backer. Those consoles you sent to Best no Buy? Those are ours. You told me to "hurry" to pre order before Feb 4th so I could get my console by April, not after the ****ing street launch in late June. Who knows how long I'll be waiting, too. Your customer service loves taking down information they already know about. Your company has done a piss-poor job with communication to its customers.”
“The deal was that if you helped them back it then you would get the console early. Had that not been a deal then not as many people would have backed them.”
“Still waiting for the Ouya I backed being a Kickstarter. Quite frankly I am PISSED as being one of the many people who backed you guys, but now getting NO PRIVILEGE of doing so AT ALL. If I would order it at Amazon I might already have it, but instead I'm still waiting. And yes, I know you guys apologised to your Kickstarter supporters, but from my point of view this is just a major fail. When I ordered it I thought I might use it as part of the media coverage we provide at my work, but... yeah, by the looks of it that's not going to be useful at all...”
“The journey hasn't begun until you rectify your terrible support for your backers that made this thing possible. What do we get in the end? "Sorry, here's your late console." Like that'll give you any credibility in the future.”
“I completely understand that things get caught up in transit, it happens. But I think making announcements about it being available in stores is a kick in the crotch to those who are still waiting. I would've held off on such announcements until KS & preorders were fulfilled. This is just rubbing salt into a wound, albeit a first world problem. I'm one of the lucky few who received theirs a few weeks ago so am completely speaking up for those who haven't. Honestly it's nothing to be jazzed over, the whole system is weak and it's sat gathering dust after an hour or two messing with it. Doesn't mean that people shouldn't have them in their hands already, though.”
“Early backer, still waiting with a tracking code that isn't working. And that's it - it's out in stores. I believed in you. I know it's kickstarter - for me that means it's ok if the product is late. BUT if it's in store and backers didn't get it - that's not acceptable. And we won't treat a well funded slick startup like yours the same way we treat the really small projects. We expect more and you have failed us.
“Like hundreds of others here, I will pile on and say, "Still waiting for my pre-order." Absolutely zero communication since the automated preorder confirmation. Shipping to retail first is a slap in the face to everyone who had high hopes for this "company." Good luck getting anyone to buy your next product.”
“My kickstarter console is apparently somewhere near Hong Kong if I'm to believe the tracking system. I'd moan about how Ouya really screwed the pooch on this one but, to be perfectly honest, I no longer care. In a year's time Ouya will probably be forgotten. A product like this is only a success if those who backed it can be enthusiastic about it. That moment has long passed.”

Ouya, the Android-based game console that arose out of a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, officially launched today. The $99 device quickly sold out at a number of retailers, including Amazon and GameStop. "According to Ouya, the console currently has more than 170 downloadable games, as well as a built-in software development kit that enables people to create and test titles right from the hardware." Many reviews of the console suggest the controllers are not very good, and there are reports that the Wi-Fi connectivity can be flaky. There's also a lot of commentary about Ouya that clearly came from unrealistic expectations of what a $99 device can provide. Most of the backers from the Kickstarter campaign have received their consoles, but some are still waiting as Ouya tries to sort out shipping problems with DHL.

Tech aims to 'liberate' developers to freely explore gameplay ideas on iOS, Android and Tizen
Havok has launched its free 3D mobile game engine Project Anarchy.
The end-to-end game development platform enables developers to deploy their titles for free on iOS, Android and Tizen platforms.
Havok says there are no commercial restrictions on company size or revenue.
Project Anarchy includes Havok’s Vision Engine, with access to its other tools such as Physics, Animation and AI, and also features a C++ architecture, a flexible asset management system, Lua debugging and customisable game samples and tutorials.
A special online hub has also been created for developers to participate in Q&As, forum discussions and community support.

Microsoft teams up with Japanese mobile game developer Klab.
Xbox and PC games could soon be making their way to a smartphone near you, with fan-favourite Ages of Empires rumoured to be available on mobile devices by the end of the year, according to reports from MarketWatch.
Titles to be converted will be available on iOS platforms and Google Android operating systems.
Microsoft's library of games reaches into the hundreds and further titles in addition to Ages of Empires are thought to be in the pipeline.
The move could indicate a significant change in the console and mobile gaming industry, as instead of battling the mobile game phenomenon, Microsoft is embracing it. This could be because it also has its finger firmly on the pulse of the smartphone world, as well as console/desktop games.
However, it could still prove to be detrimental to game sales for those platforms, which create a large percentage of their revenue.
Maybe companies such as Nintendo, who appears to have been left further and further behind, should bite the bullet and release their own smartphone. They could call it the NinPhonedo, or WiiPhone...

A benchmark test conducted by the consumer magazine has found Samsung's Galaxy S4 to come out on top, whilst Apple's iPhone 5 puts in a disappointing performance.
Which? tested the latest smartphones on the market, including the likes of the HTC One, Sony Experia Z, Google Nexus 4, BlackBerry Z10, Galaxy Note 2 along with both Apple and Samsung's flagship handsets.
The Geekbench 2 test found the Galaxy S4 to take the top spot with a impressive effort, achieving a score of 3,188, whilst the HTC One placed second with a score of 2,798.
In comparison, the iPhone 5 had a lacklustre outing, scoring just 1,664 in the test – less than half of the Galaxy S4.
Of course, users should consider the hardware within each device. It's unsurprising to see the Galaxy S4 hammer the iPhone 5 given its 1.9GHz quad-core processor, whilst Apple's handset sports just a 1.2GHz dual-core chip.
BlackBerry will no doubt be disappointed with the results of the test, with the BlackBerry Z10 achieving a grade of just 1,698 – a serious blow to the firm's hopes of competing with the powerhouses of the smartphone market.

Not to be forgotten amid other new Samsung products, the company has announced that its complete Galaxy Tab 3 lineup will arrive in the US next month. The tablet family launches in the states on July 7th, with all three screen sizes (7, 8 and 10.1 inches) going on sale at Samsung.com, Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Office Depot and other brick-and-mortar retailers. As a refresher, the entry-level Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is priced at $199 and sports a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of storage (plus microSD expansion), and a 7-inch 1,024 x 600 TFT display. There's Android Jelly Bean (4.1) from the outset, as well as Samsung's various apps and built-in hubs.
In addition to having a larger screen, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 ($299) bumps up other specifications, with a more potent Exynos 1.5GHz dual-core processor and higher-resolution (1,280 x 800) TFT display. It's got the very latest Android build (4.2), as well as a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video capture. Storage is also doubled to 16GB, with extra space available through microSD, and 1.5GB of RAM to keep apps running smoothly.
Finally, there's the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 ($399), which packs an Intel Z2560 processor(1.6GHz dual-core) and the same resolution as the Tab 3 8.0, albeit stretched a little further. It also matches the smaller model on storage and camera specs, although RAM has inexplicably dropped to just a single gig. The larger model does include a built-in IR blaster, however, as well as Samsung's WatchON TV recommendation service. All three WiFi-only models will arrive in white and a previously leaked gold brown hue. Pre-orders start tomorrow.

We got to see quite a bit of iOS 7 back at WWDC 2013, but we only saw it working on an iPhone. Well, we've got some good news for big screen Apple devs, as a new iOS 7 beta's been released OTA and it now works on the iPad. Of course, the new beta also brings the usual nebulous "bug fixes and improvements" for all devices, and among those improvements is the addition of the Voice Memos app and Siri's new voices in English as well. It's available now, so if you're in the beta, you best get to downloading!

Microsoft is selective about where its first-party game franchises appear -- outside of lightweight releases like Kinectimals and Wordament, it prefers to use games astechnology showcases and system sellers. It may not be picky for much longer, though, as Nikkei claims that Microsoft has reached a deal with Japan's KLab to develop Android and iOS versions of its first-party titles. The deal reportedly includes adaptations of both PC and Xbox games, and would start with a free-to-play variant ofAge of Empires that could launch before the end of the 2013 fiscal year. We've reached out to Microsoft to verify the rumor, but it's clear that the arrangement could be a breakthrough for gamers who aren't wedded to Microsoft's existing mobile strategy.

Just over a month has passed since CyanogenMod 10.1 went into a release candidate phase, and now it's getting ready to emerge from its development cocoon as a stable release. The code isn't available for most gadgets just yet, but it's set to arrive on the project's servers sometime tonight. Support for all Tegra 2-infused hardware and some Samsung devices with Exynos chips has been left out of this distro, but a "status report" for those machines is due later in the week. Now that the the Cyanogen Mod team has reached the 10.1 milestone, it'll focus on monthly releases to bake in other features and functionality. Click the second source link to check if your device's build has gone stable.

Sony's unveiled its latest addition to its Xperia Z series, a new smartphone that blurs the line between smartphone and tablet once more -- the appropriately-named Xperia Z Ultra. Packing a 6.4-inch display that runs at 1080p resolution, it bests other similarlygigantic superphones that all currently hover around 720p. This new screen is paired with Qualcomm's latest and greatest mobile processor, the impressively potent 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, throwing in 4G LTE connectivity too.
It all weighs in at 212 grams (over 50 grams more than the Xperia Z) but the body has been slimmed down to a mere 6.5mm uniform thickness, jostling with the barely-announced Ascend P6 for title of thinnest phone despite those high-end specifications (and screen dimensions). There's 16GB of built-in storage, 11GB of which is user-accessible, while a microSD slot will add an additional 64GB if needed. To power that screen, Sony has also cranked the battery pack up to 3,000mAh and we're hoping that will be enough for all those high-end components it'll be powering. There's no specifics on LTE bands just yet, but the phone also packs a pentaband HSPA radio, ensuring the global model will play nice on AT&T's 3G service, at least, when it launches later this year. We've got more details (especially on that display) after the break.

Sony's taking a second stab at the fledgling wearable category it helped pioneer with today's announcement of the SmartWatch 2. The Android-powered wristwatch retains the familiar remote functionality of its predecessor (i.e., allowing users to answer calls, read email and texts, snap photos, etc.), albeit now from a larger, 1.6-inch (220 x 176) touch display. Sony's packed all of this "second screen" functionality into a handsome, aluminum body design that's crafted to be dust- and water-resistant (IP57), much like the Xperia Z line before it. And for users that want a little variety, the company's also offering a pack-in stainless steel wristband that can be swapped out for any other 24mm strap (Sony plans to offer alternative straps sometime soon).
The SmartWatch 2 also features support for NFC and Bluetooth 3.0, so you can easily pair it with compatible devices running Android 4.0 or higher -- something like theXperia Z Ultra, perhaps. As for battery life, Sony claims the SmartWatch 2's rated for a maximum of four days with moderate use. But those with a lighter touch, or a penchant for digital wristwatches, may be able to eke out a full week's worth of juice. There's no pricing information to share at the moment, only a semi-concrete global release date for this September. Which is just about enough time for you (or, more likely, your Dad) to dust off that Dick Tracy impersonation.

We dinged Sony for shipping the Xperia Z with an old version of Android, but the company is catching up today by posting an upgrade to Android 4.2.2. Most owners receiving the update are carrying unbranded HSPA+ and LTE models at this stage, although there are reports of at least a few carrier-specific phone variants getting the refresh. As with the Xperia ZL update, most of the user-facing changes are minor. The biggest addition is support for lock screen widgets; there's also slight (if noticeable) tweaks to the interface look and feel. If those revisions are still meaningful enough for you, we'd suggest a quick upgrade check through the usual desktop and OTA channels.

Compensation available to US consumers affected by unauthorised IAPs made by children
Apple has revealed the details of its $100 million settlement to refund parents whose children have racked up huge costs by spending money on in-app purchases without permission.
As spotted by 9to5Mac, the deal is part of a settlement from a class action lawsuit against Apple, and if approved would mean US residents who are affected by unauthorised in-app purchases can receive refunds or other forms of compensation.
Claims which exceed $30 in total stand to receive a full refund in the form of iTunes Store credit, as long as the transactions took place in a single 45 day period. Parents claiming for refunds under this amount will receive $5 iTunes Store credit.
Apps affected by the settlement include games with a minimum age rating of 4+, 9+, or 12+ that offer in-app purchases. You can view a full list of qualified apps here.
To claim, parents must submit a valid Claim Form on or before January 13th, 2014. Those who do receive compensation will not however be able to take part in any further lawsuit against Apple about the same claims and allegations from the case.

As wearable technology continues to advance, one British designer has produced a Bluetooth enabled glove that functions likes a phone.
Whilst the industry's biggest players focus on incorporating smart technology within watches and glasses, Sean Miles of Designworks took the much simpler idea of incorporating the functionality of a phone within a glove.
How quintessentially British.
The device works using a built-in Bluetooth receptor, which connects to a users phone which remains in their pocket. As the smartphone rings, the user is able to answer the call via a button on the glove itself, and proceed to take the call by using the timeless phone gesture.
With a speaker placed in the glove and a microphone within the pinky, a user is able to conduct a phone call, all by – quite literally – talking to the hand.
During an interview with the BBC, Miles highlights the device as a design challenge rather than one aimed for consumer use after he was approached by phone company 02 Recycling, but it's hard to imagine an idea as innovative as this not winding up on the hands of the everyday smartphone user.

Within its latest commercial, Nokia not-so-subtly attempts to snub Apple and the iPhone's dependency on its flash feature.
Showing off its new Lumina 925 handset and its high-end camera, which doesn't require a flash in poorly-lit conditions, Nokia attempts to upstage the iPhone with quite a creative video.
Opening with a Lumina 925 user walking through the dark streets of a nameless metropolis, our protagonist is quickly surrounded by individuals suffering with both a pale white complexion and a serious case of red eye.
What we could typically recognise as the modern day zombie, Nokia deems the beings as something a little less sinister: iPhone users.
Apparently reeling from the effect's of using the iPhone's camera in dark, poorly-lit circumstances, the mob of flash-stricken Apple fans quickly surround the Nokia users and snap him with what is clearly an iPhone 5 handset, presumably turning him into one of their own.
Following Average Joe's demise, the advert fades out to Nokia's blurb of the Lumina 925, which simply reads: "The best pictures in any light. Even without the flash."
Creative? Yes. Gritty? Yes. A little too much? Maybe. Still, Nokia's take on the rival-bashing commercial is different if nothing else.
