If we could live off goodwill alone, then Ouya would already be considered a success. With its dream of an open source console that everyone can afford and anyone can publish for, it tapped into something powerful.Over a long and often fractious console generation, gamers and developers alike have grown disillusioned with the way the industry works. Glossy sequels failed to transform their bloated budgets into fresh ideas. Publishers clutched at straws in the battle against used sales, poking innocent gamers in eye as they went. Surely there was a better way to do it? A way that both captured the "anything goes" ethos of the Good Old Days while making the best of the digital on-demand culture of today.Ouya, along with several other Android-powered micro-consoles, has undoubtedly released in the right place at the right time, but is it the right product? We've already taken a detailed look at the Ouya in Digital Foundry's review, but now that it's on sale to the general public in the UK - sitting alongside Xboxes, PlayStations and iPads on mainstream shopping sites - what is the average consumer going to expect when they click that "Add to basket" button? More to the point, will they be happy with what they get? This, after all, is the audience that Ouya has to win over. That impressive $8.5m Kickstarter haul will have smoothed the console's journey into production, but there's also the danger that it has front-loaded the launch; the indie game devotees, along with the hardcore hobbyists and tinkerers who will jump on any hackable piece of kit, have already spent their money. Now Ouya has to impress everyone else.First impressions are likely to be reasonably good. The console itself is compact but weighty, with a tasty brushed aluminium finish and an eye-catching design. While the price may be low, that's not reflected in the tactile qualities of the unit. It's easy to connect up as well. Power lead in, HDMI out, and it's ready to go.

A new version of Android (4.3, and still called Jelly Bean) is already doing the testing rounds on Samsung's Galaxy S 4 and thanks to some porting work from SAMMobile, it's apparently working on both the Google Play and original iterations. We've caught a glance of Android 4.3 on LG's Nexus 4 already, but we're now getting a second look at a refreshed camera interface, some minor design tweaks (like more regular appearances of a share button) and, well, we're still perusing the gallery for more nuggets. If you know what you're doing (and don't fear voiding your warranty) you can find the files at the source -- early reports suggest that the GS4 is "fully working" on this early build. We'll update this post if we find anything else new, but early impressions suggest it's a relatively gentle upgrade from the existing mobile OS.

In an effort to outdo itself, BlueStacks is announcing the GamePop Mini for the cube-averse. The biggest difference between the Mini (seen above on the left) and the cube (the... uh... cube above) isn't the form factor; it's in pricing. Where the regular GamePop is $129 (unless you act soon) the Mini is "free" after a 12-month subscription of $7 per-month, or $84 total. At this price, it costs less than an OUYA, but slightly more than a GameStick. "If you keep it more than 12 months, you keep it forever," BlueStacks' Head of Marketing and Business Development John Gargiulo told us. Of course, there's not much to do with the Mini without a subscription. "It'd be like if Netflix did it this way and had hardware -- the unit would be useless without the subscription," he added. Additionally, if you return the Mini inside of 12 months, there's a $25 restocking fee.
The subscription gives users access to a plethora of games from 500 "popular mobile game partners." Those partners include the teams behind Jetpack Joyride andFieldrunners. "Getting the kind of developer support we've gotten, it sets us apart," Gargiulo said. "We saw what happened with the Dreamcast and we saw what happened with the Wii U. You need to have good launch titles; there needs to be games everyone recognizes and wants to play."
To make GamePop more enticing to developers, BlueStacks created Looking Glass -- proprietary tech allowing iOS-only apps to run on its Android-4.2-based console. When an iOS app makes calls to Apple's hardware, Looking Glass interprets those calls and translates them to the GamePop Mini's hardware. Of course, a few changes within the code are necessary. "[Porting is] not easy, but I would submit it's not hard, relatively speaking," Gargiulo said.

If you've ever wanted to hurl your iPhone through your TV while enthusiastically playing tennis, now's your chance. This week, Rolocule Games launched an iOS app -- Motion Tennis -- that turns your Apple TV into a Wii-esque gaming console. To connect devices to Apple TVs, the game relies on AirPlay Mirroring, which can be toggled on in the settings menu. Once your iOS device has been transformed into a tennis racket, you can control the action on your screen -- just be sure to strap the phone to your wrist, lest you become the poor sod to launch a new meme. If Wimbledon's whetted your appetite for more tennis, you can find the game on iTunes or watch the video after the break.

Rumors of Apple switching its chip manufacturing from Samsung to TSMC have persisted for a long, long time. However, they may be more substantial this time around: the Wall Street Journal claims that Apple quietly signed a deal with TSMC earlier this month. The agreement reportedly has TSMC taking over some of Apple's chip production in 2014. Technical setbacks kept the agreement from happening any sooner, according to thesources. Neither company is commenting on the accuracy of the story, although few would doubt Apple's incentives to reduce its dependency on Samsung-made silicon -- it's not keen on funding a primary competitor.

Verizon customers -- now's your chance to grab Samsung's latest flagship device with more internal storage. The carrier has started selling the 32GB Galaxy S 4 online, giving buyers another choice besides the 16GB version sold on its website for $199. Shipments aren't promised until July 3rd, but you can buy the 32GB Galaxy S 4 right now for $299 -- assuming you're interested in paying $100 more for storage on a phone that already features expandable memory. If you'd rather shell out more money for an unlocked bootloader, though, Verizon also sells the Developer Edition at the lofty price of $650 each.

Codemasters revived popular racing series Colin McRae for iOS this week, but the publisher says this is only the beginning.
The firm is developing four more titles for smartphones and tablets, which kicks off a "pretty full" roadmap of mobile games for the next two years, according to VG247.
VP of digital business Gary Rowe claims these games could even dictate what the publisher tries next on consoles.
"The smart device market is a great way to test out new ideas," he said. "Aside from working with legendary games like Colin McRae Rally, we're readying a whole roster of games.
"Some are based on existing and familiar IP, and others are completely new that have been developed exclusively for mobile. If we can leverage success on smart devices, we'd be delighted to see what can then work in the console space."

Android powered hardware being developed at search engine giant, claim sources
Google is reported to be working on its own Android game console as a preemptive measure against possible future Apple devices.
Until recently Android has stuck to smartphones and tablets, but devices such as the Ouya microconsole are already taking advantage of the open source Linux-based operating system.
“People familiar with the matter” told the Wall Street Journal the company is keeping its eye on the Ouya, and is acting under the expectation that Apple will launch its own console with the next Apple TV release.
Google has not commented on the rumors.
As part of its transition into the hardware market, the company has been working on its own line of smartphones, and has entered the laptop market with the Chromebook.

The Japanese phone maker will reportedly launch its sizeable Xperia Z Ultra smartphone in the UK with a £600 price tag.
That's according to retailer Clove, which has begun offering preorders of the device, complete with the hefty price tag.
If correct, that would price the handset above the likes of Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S4.
And it's not only the Xperia Z Ultra's price tag that is hefty, with the device's 1080x1920 HD display measuring in at 6.4-inches, making the Ultra the world's largest HD smartphone.
Designed to compete against rival phablets, including the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Note 2. the Xperia Z Ultra boasts a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, along with 2GB of RAM and an 8MP camera.
Meanwhile, Android's 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system takes the helm of the device, whilst also offering 16GB of internal storage, which is upgradeable to 64GB via microSD.
