The Mini, the Active and the Zoom – all that's missing is an Uncle Fester.
Da-da-dum, click-click. That's what springs to mind when I hear the term the 'S4 family,' but I'm mysterious and spooky like that.
Samsung took to London to showcase its new range of Android and Windows-based Galaxy and ATIV devices, even though most of the Galaxy S4 line was already unveiled ahead of tonight.
The Galaxy S4 has sold more than ten million units in under a month, and Samsung hopes to generate even more sales with the launch of the Galaxy S4 Mini, theGalaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 Zoom.
DJ Lee, president and head of sales and marketing for mobile and IT communications, said: "The new Galaxy S4s will fit a wide range of lifestyles no matter who you are or where you live."
VP of European telecommunication operations, Jean-Daniel Ayme, went on to reveal the flagship S4 will be released in five new colours: Purple Mirage, Red Aurora, Blue Arctic, Pink Twilight, and Brown Autumn.
Galaxy S4 Mini
Ayme, said: "For many people their smartphone is like a fashion statement, so we delivered a compact yet powerful version of the Galaxy S4."
Full details on the ME site.
Galaxy S4 Active
He continued: "The Active is all about durability. You can take it to the desert, the beach or use while skiing on snow or water."
Sadly for those wanting to make calls from the deep, the touchscreen doesn't work underwater, but the phone will function for up to 30 minutes in up to one metre. Users can take photos underwater, however, controlling it through the camera button.
Full details on the ME site.
Galaxy S4 Zoom
The lens is the USP for the Zoom, which will launch in White Frost and Black Mist, the traditional S4 colours.

New tablet/laptop hybrid is designed to support entertainment and business in equal measures.
Tonight's Samsung Premiere saw the full Galaxy S4 family greeted with open arms and the launch of the 4G-enabled, Android-based Galaxy NX camera.
Following the reveal of the little green robot-powered devices, Samsung moved on to discuss its Windows-fuelled ATIV range.
Patrick Povel, head of European ATIV Marketing, said: "We've taken the outstanding Galaxy DNA and incorporated it into Windows OS-based devices; the ATIV family. We've redesigned and recreated the ATIV from scratch to provide the mobility and power performance that people demand."
He has a point. Despite revealing two 'tablets,' it's the ATIV Q that really shines due to its ability to run both Android and Windows 8 simultaneously, with users able to switch between OSs at the touch of a button.
That means users can play Android games on the Windows platform when excessive use of Microsoft Word begins to become too laborious. The device also comes with a 13.3-inch screen, 3200x1800 qHD+ resolution and 178-degree viewing angle.
"Size is great, but size alone isn't enough. The device is so bright that it can be used outdoors in very bright sunlight, and it automatically senses where you aware to adapt depending on lighting conditions," added Povel.
Battery life lasts for nine hours, while there is a keyboard found beneath the screen which effectively transforms the tablet into a laptop. Naturally, S-Pen support is also available for those wishing to get creative.
The hybrid gizmo is 13.9mm thin, weighs 1.29kg and is made from magnesium.
Meanwhile, the Q's sister device, the 10.1-inch ATIV Tab 3, runs on Windows 8 – the full version, not RT – is 8.2mm thin and weighs 550g. The battery life is 8.5 hours, S-Pen is supported, and the tablet comes bundled with MS Office 2013.

Following the launch of Office Mobile in the US, Microsoft has launched the productivity suite for iPhone users here in the UK.
Through the use of their Office 365 subscription, users are able to access the popular suite's multiple applications, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Subscribers of the 365 service will not only be able to view these documents, but will have the functionality to edit them on their iPhone handset, whilst any changes made to documents are saved and synced with the cloud.
Whilst the application is free on the Apple store, it requires an Office 365 subscription, which is available for £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year in order to log into the mobile service.
However, iPad users will continue to be disappointed as Microsoft recently confirmed the app would not be appearing on the Apple tablet, and there doesn't seem to be any initial plans to port the suite over.
Also missing from Office Mobile is the inclusion of both Outlook and OneNote on the iPhone edition of the suite.
Whilst previously keeping the Office software firmly close to its chest, Microsoft has since changed its stance by pushing the software onto the rival iPhone in an attempt to boost subscriptions for its Office 365 service by opening it up to a wider variety of customers.

Jelly Bean has been making its way to ever cheaper phones in recent months, and that's very conspicuous with the launch of Virgin Mobile's new Samsung Galaxy Ring. For $180, you're getting Android 4.1 in a price range where 4.0 is still common. You're also getting a surprisingly capable device under the hood -- while there's no LTE, the prepaid handset carries a reasonably quick 1.4GHz processor, a 4-inch screen, a 5MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front-facing sensor. We'd still consider shelling out a little more cash for a future-ready 4G device, but Virgin users determined to scrimp and save can pick up the Galaxy Ring today.

Anyone who's tried to tether to their iPhone or iPad will recall how iOS manages to craft its own passwords when used as a personal hotspot. The aim is to ensure that anyone sharing a data connection will get some degree of security, regardless of whether or not they tinker with the password themselves. However, three researchers from FAU in Germany have now worked the structure behind these auto-generated keys -- a combination of a short English word and a series or random numbers -- and managed to crack that hotspot protection in under a minute. To start, the word list contains about 52,500 entries, and once the testers were able to capture a WiFi connection, they used an AMD Radeon HD 6990 GPU to cycle through all those words with number codes, taking just under 50 minutes to crack with rote entry. Following that, they realized that only a small subset (just 1,842) of the word list was being used.
With an even faster GPU -- a cluster of four AMD Radeon HD 7970s -- they got the hotspot password cracking time to 50 seconds. The Friedrich-Alexander University researchers added that unscrupulous types could use comparable processing power through cloud computing. "System-generated passwords should be reasonably long, and should use a reasonably large character set. Consequently, hotspot passwords should be composed of completely random sequences of letters, numbers, and special characters," says the report, which outlines the trade-off between security and usability. However, as ZDNet notes, Apple's cycled password approach still offers more protection than static options found elsewhere. Check out the full paper at the source.

Apple won a contract this week with the Los Angeles Unified School District to provide iPads to its students, netting Cupertino $30 million across the next two years. The agreement will roll out iPads to students at 47 campuses; the iPads cost $678 apiece (nearly $200 more than a standard entry level iPad) and come loaded with educational software. Bizarrely, with tablets priced at $678 apiece, $30 million only nets LA schools approximately 45,000 iPads, while the school district comprises 640,000 students. We asked Apple to clarify and were told that the contract is for 31,000 iPads (for both students and teachers) which come with "Pearson Common Core System of Courses delivered via a new app." That's in addition to Apple standards like iWork, iLife, and iTunes, as well as "a range of educational third-party apps" included. The first iPads arrive in classrooms this fall, in what is deemed the "first phase" of a larger rollout.
The battle for LA's school contract was hard fought, with both board members and a Microsoft rep pushing back against student / teacher ratings and the overall cost. The teachers union president Warren Fletcher requested the money be spent on hiring new staff over mass-buying iPads, while district officials argued that national student tests require computer literacy, the LA Times reports -- the board voted unanimously (6 - 0) to approve the contract.
Traditionally, iPads have been used in college-level education -- both Seton Hill (notSeton Hall) and Tennessee's Webb School use Apple's tablet.

We knew it was coming, but AT&T has now officially announced the NEC Terrain. Set to become available on the same day as BlackBerry's physical QWERTY-packing handset, the LTE-ready Terrain boasts a "high-resolution" 3.1-inch display, a decent 1.5GHz, dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and 8GB of built-in storage which can reach up to 32GB via microSD -- all while running a not-so-fresh version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. Given that NEC designed it with the business folk in mind, this little ruggedized (MIL-810G) smartphone also offers on-device encryption for VPN access and compatibility with AT&T's Enhanced Push-to-Talk services, which the company says makes for the perfect blend of "the necessary features needed for work and personal use." As stated earlier, the NEC Terrain will be hitting shelves on June 21st, carrying a $99.99 price tag with the accustomed two-year deal on the Rethink Possible carrier.

It's often been rumored that Microsoft had an eye on Nokia's handset business. It made perfect sense for both companies -- one a struggling pioneer of the mobile industry and the other a struggling stalwart from the first wave of smartphones. According to theWall Street Journal's sources, the two were actually quite close to striking a deal and were having "advanced talks" in London as recently as this month. But, according to the all-too-familiar "people familiar with the matter," those talks have broken down. Those same sources say it was Microsoft that walked away from the table over concerns about Nokia's asking price, especially in light of its continued failure to put asignificant dent in Apple and Samsung's market share. Though it seems like dreams of a Microsoft-Nokia merger are dead for the moment, don't expect the disagreement to severely affect the duo's partnership. Nokia is still reliant on Microsoft's help to stand out in the market and Microsoft needs the Finnish manufacturer to keep pumping outflagship handsets with Windows Phone on them.

Kabam's latest free-to-play mobile adaptation races to company's best debut of all time
[h=3]Kabam[/h]
Kabam's mobile adaptation of the over-the-top Fast & Furious 6 posted appropriately over-the-top new user numbers in its debut. The free-to-play publisher today announced that Fast & Furious 6 for smartphones and tablets has recorded more than 17 million installations since its May 16 launch.
The company's first racing game has topped the iOS charts in over 100 countries, including the US, Germany, Korea, and Japan. Kabam monetizes the title by selling in-game gold that can be used to buy, customize, and upgrade a variety of cars based on real-world licenses.
Kabam is no stranger to success on the App Store. The company's Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North was the highest grossing iPhone game of 2012, according to Apple.

The wireless charging options available on flagship phones is a great feature, but most of us aren’t rocking the latest and greatest cellphone. [Daniel] came up with a great mod thatadds wireless charging to just about every cellphone ever, at a very low price and a few bits and bobs ordered off eBay.
[Daniel] used a Palm Touchstone inductive charger – available for a few bucks on eBay – along with an inductive charging circuit from a Palm Pixi. This charging circuit was designed to complement the Touchstone charger, and is simple enough to wire up; all [Dan] needed to do was put the coil and charging circuit near the charge, and it output 5 Volts to charge any phone.
To get the power from the charging circuit into his phone’s battery, [Daniel] simply wired the output of the coil’s circuit to the USB in on the phone. The space inside his S2 was pretty tight but he was able to come up with two ways to install the charging circuit, for use with either the stock back cover or a third-party case.
For anyone with a soldering iron, it’s a quick bit of work to add wireless charging to any phone. We’re loving [Dan]‘s solution, as the Palm gear he used is so readily available on eBay and junk drawers the world over.

With the focus from Ubuntu on phones, seven carriers have signed onto their Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group including Deutsche Telekom, Everything Everywhere, Telecom Italia, Korea Telecom, LG UPlus, Portugal Telecom, and SK Telecom. The group is designed for the carriers to let 'mobile operators shape Ubuntu's mobile strategy. Members receive advance confidential briefings and provide us with industry insight to ensure that Ubuntu meets their needs.'"Looks like Ubuntu Phone is getting serious. Mark Shuttleworth writes about their first meeting: "We mapped out our approach to the key question I’ve been asked by every carrier we’ve met so far: how can we accommodate differentiation, without fragmenting the platform for developers? We described the range of diversity we think we can support initially, received some initial feedback from carriers participating immediately, and I’m looking forward to the distilled feedback we’ll get on the topic in the next call. CAG members get a period of exclusivity in their markets."

4G operator joins coalition of firms discussing development of new software.
EE has pledged its support for a new operating system branded Ubuntu by joining a coalition of international operators, which will look to develop the new software,Mobile Today has reported.
Alongside Deutsche Telekom, Korea Telecom, Telecom Italia, LG UPlus, Portugal Telecom and SK Telecom, EE has become the latest operator to join the coalition, indicating that it may well be a launch partner for the first Ubuntu handsets when they land later this year.
The carrier advisory group will have regular meetings to discuss standards, ecosystems, the ability to port apps from Android and BlackBerry and revenue share models for publishers, operators and manufacturers.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, the developer behind the OS, commented: “While Ubuntu has gained tremendous traction in both cloud and PC environments, we recognise the complex dynamics of the mobile market and so the CAG allows us to draw on the insights and support of such a thoughtful and experienced group of industry partners. We aim to deliver a platform that delights everyone who touches it and meets industry requirements of quality, security, manageability and differentiation.â€

Sales of high-end smartphones exceeded 40 million worldwide last year, while the overall number of smartphone sales grew by almost 47 per cent from 470 million in 2011 to 690 million, according to new figures published by Berg Insight.
The growth was boosted primarily by sales of higher-end devices with unsubsidised retail prices in excess of €400 and low-cost smartphones priced around $100 and below.
Initially launched in 2011, smartphones with dual-core application processors offered more than double the power of previous devices. Quad-core handsets then followed in 2012, offering mobile consumers a wide range of high-end devices to choose from across a wide range of prices.
Andre Malm, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight, said: "It becomes more difficult for consumers to make comparisons between handsets when application processor vendors introduce SoCs based on different CPU architectures and core counts, each with different performance depending on specific workload."
Berg has also predicted that nearly all of the projected 1.5 billion smartphones sold in 2017 will posses dual-core processors at the very least, while the majority will contain quad-core processors.

Less than a month after the LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 sauntered past the FCC, AT&T has announced that it'll start selling the device on June 21st. Originally released in the US as a WiFi-only affair, the 8-inch slate will set you back $399 with a two-year contract. However, should you also be in the market for a new smartphone, you can snag the tablet for only $199 if you buy it and bundle the plan with a Samsung Galaxy S 4, S 4 Active or Galaxy Note 2. The S-Pen-toting device is equipped with a 1,280 x 800 display, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and Android 4.1. These details barely scratch the surface though, so we encourage you to exercise that pointer finger and check out our review to help you decide if this baby is worth your money.

GameStick first appeared around the the first of this year, promising its Kickstarter supporters an Android gaming console that looks more Roku Streaming Stick thanOUYA. Since then, GameStick has gathered its cash and started shipping out dev units, but its commercial release has already been delayed once, and today the project got pushed back another month. That means that GameSticks won't start shipping until early August.
The reason for the delay is that the device's UI remains a work in progress and the team hasn't yet given backers who pledged $300 or more the chance to provide feedback. It's not all bad news, however, as the folks behind GameStick have confirmed that manufacturing tooling is complete, and the first Kickstarter controller has rolled off the line. Not only that, but you can see shots of the final versions of the GameSick itself and its controller's charging dock at the source link below.

Crytek's second iOS game shown at WWDC
[h=3]Crytek[/h]crytek.com
At last week's WWDC event, team members from Crytek Budapest showed off the company's second iOS title, a top-down tactical action game called The Collectibles. 9 to 5 Mac reports the demonstration was part of a presentation for Apple's new game controller framework. The new API will make it easier for developers and hardware vendors to add controller support to games.
The game will allow players to switch between the touch-based interface and the physical controller on-the-fly. The Collectibles is a tentative name for the title, which is expected to release later this year.
Crytek's first iOS game is the physics-based puzzle game Fibble HD.
