Apple has assembled a team of notable speech technology bods in Boston to further enhance Siri for iOS 7.
Sources have told Xconomy that the team includes a number of former VoiceSignal Technologies employees – the company that was purchased by Apple partner Nuance in 2007.
The team includes Larry Gillick, a former vice president of research at Nuance. Gillick’s Apple job is listed as ‘Chief Speech Scientist, Siri’.
This news has caused many to ponder if Apple is planning to move its Siri software completely in-house, moving away from relying on Nuance.
It wouldn’t be completely unnatural for Apple, who dumped Google Maps and made its own mobile mapping app last year.
In iOS 7, it is believed Siri will see speed enhancements and better pronunciation, as well as a set of new voices.

Apple has partially restored access to its developer services, which went down for maintenance on Thursday, July 18 after being hacked.
"We appreciate your patience as we work to bring our developer services back online," an update on Apple's developer site reads. "Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, software downloads, and other developer services are now available."
According to Apple's system status page, the member center, Xcode automatic configuration, pre-release documentation, program enrollment and renewals, developer forums, videos, App Store resource center and technical support services are still offline. Apple will extend program membership and keep developers' apps on the App Store if their membership "expired or is set to expire during this downtime."

Fresh reports on the state of the cellphone market during Q2 2013 have blown through the barn door, and industry analysts are flaunting some fairly impressive figures. Smartphones have outsold their less-intelligent brethren for the second quarter in a row, and Strategy Analytics says shipments hit a record-breaking 237.9 million. According to IDC, Samsung managed to ship a total of 72.4 million smartphones during Q2 -- a 43.9% boost year-over-year -- with help of the Galaxy S 4 and price cuts to the GS3. To put that in perspective, that's more than double the 31.2 million iPhones Apple managed to ship, and Strategy Analytics claims this marks a three-year low in Cook and Co.'s marketshare. While LG and ZTE each occupy third and fifth place, respectively, Lenovo pushed Huawei out of the number four slot by sending out 11.3 million handsets. If you're craving for more stats, hit the break for a trio of press releases.

We've seen Android run on anything from low-resolution smartwatches to high-PPIphones and tablets, including the new 1920 x 1200-pixel Nexus 7 Google launchedearlier this week. To make this possible, the mobile OS supports a number of pixel densities for app content -- from 120PPI (LDPI / Low DPI) to 480PPI (XXHDPI / Extra Extra High DPI). Close examination of the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) source code reveals the addition of a 640PPI (XXXHDPI / Extra Extra Extra High DPI) pixel density, which -- according to the comments in the code -- is intended for 4Ktelevisions. Does this mean we'll begin to see Android devices with 640PPI Ultra HDdisplays? Perhaps, but considering 480PPI is overkill on handsets, this is most likely designed to make image assets and fonts, such as the Google TV UI, readable on 4K screens when viewed from a distance.

Installing an Android app brings up a permissions prompt that most folks ignore (though they probably shouldn't). But, what if you could grant applications access to some parts of your smartphone and not others? That's something Android Police have discovered is already baked into Android 4.3, and it's called "Apps Ops." The feature is hidden by default, but can easily be enabled via a third-party app in the Play Store, which brings it to life and allows you to fine tune other apps' permissions to read your contacts, access your location via GPS, or even read your call log. This is a buried feature and we have no idea if and when it'll be officially activated, but it looks like Google's pledge for better privacy could mean more than just an incognito mode.

It's no secret that Samsung's working on a next-gen Galaxy Note, but little did we know that it might come in three screen sizes. We've previously seen the model number SM-N900 pop up in a number of places, and this time, our friend @techkiddy spotted the screen sizes alongside some new names on Zauba, a database that somehow tracks India's import and export shipments.
Unlike the rumors out there that only mention a single screen size, Zauba lists all 5.5-, 5.7- and 6-inch versions of this supposed Note III, and that these are all shipped to India "for R&D purpose." If true, this would match the multi-size strategy of theGalaxy Mega. Additionally, there are a handful of variant names here: SM-N900A, SM-N900AI, SM-N900P, SM-N900R4, SM-N900S, SM-N900T and SM-N900V. We're not quite sure what the differences are, but some of these are tagged with multiple screen sizes, so they're probably just packaged with different radios. Regardless, we have a feeling that JK Shin will tell us everything at IFA in September.

It's no secret that Windows Phone 8 users miss out on a variety of hit Android and iOS apps, including the ever-popular Instagram. Whether that application will ever make its way to Nokia's lineup is anyone's guess, but one new download will enable you to engage your better-equipped friends, albeit in a limited capacity. Hipstamatic Oggl, which is available free for Nokia's Lumia 928, 925, 920 and 820 today, brings a selection of filters, and, perhaps most notably for some, allows you to share your images on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, in addition to the Oggl network. You can only upload your photos to Instagram, though -- you can't view images there, or add likes and comments.
Each download includes five "lenses" and five "films," though you can access the full library of filters with a $3 three-month or $10 one-year subscription. If you're not interested in paying to change colors and add borders, you can still snag 60 days of free access by downloading the app and creating an account before August 9th. Additionally, Lumia 1020 owners will have access to the Hipstamatic Oggl PRO app, which adds exclusive control over settings like white balance, ISO and shuttle speed. Download both at the source links below.

We're sure glad there's iFixit to take apart new gadgets so we don't have to, and it comes as no surprise that the next-gen Nexus 7 is one of its latest experiments. If you've read our hands-on with the device, you won't be surprised by much of what the folks at iFixit saw while tearing it down. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the new version has huge improvements when it comes to repairability. Its huge battery is glued to an adhesive tray, and like its predecessor, its display seems to be the biggest problem -- you'll need a heat gun to get it out. Still, iFixit gives it a score of 7 out of 10, because all they needed to pry it open was a plastic tool.

Android variants come in various guises, some liberating, some a bit cheeky, and others, entirely free. Free, as in free to you, and free from any kind of licensing issues -- and Replicant is one such example. The project has been around since 2010, but a new fundraising initiative by the Free Software Foundation promises to give it a vital boost. The key difference with Replicant and many other Android spin-offs is that it doesn't rely on proprietary software for it to play nice with vendor hardware. While most of Android is free, it's at this hardware interface level that things get a bit more complex. The FSF hopes that by driving investment towards Replicant more hardware can be supported, in turn opening the OS up to even more users. Sound like something you can get behind? Head over to the source and show your support.

CEO Julie Uhrman defends console's divisive first month on the market
Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman believes that developers on the nascent platform will be reporting revenue in the millions by the end of the year.
Speaking to The Verge, Uhrman challenged the micro-console's critics, who have rallied around its lacklustre reviews and underwhelming sales figures. On the latter issue, Uhrman revealed that 27 per cent of Ouya users have bought a game - all of which are free-to-play initially - since its launch last month, and 13 or the top 20 games report 8 per cent of players choosing to pay.
"I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that's 30 days old," Uhrman said. "These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles, and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year, we'll see a few developers telling us they've made more than a million dollars on Ouya."
Ouya developers started reporting their first-month sales figures earlier this week. Several developers expressed disappointment with the performance of their games, with some questioning the worth of the extra effort required to port to the platform.
However, others seemed content with the extra revenue, even though it amounted to only a few thousand extra sales. Indeed, Uhrman offered two of those games - TowerFall, which has made $21,000 to date, and Hidden In Plain Sight, which has made $4,381 - as evidence of Ouya's promise.
"To say developers can't make money on Ouya - I take offense to that," she said. "I'm sure the creators of TowerFall and Hidden in Plain Sight would take offense to that. The console has only been out for a month, and developers have only had access to the hardware for about 6 months. We really like what we see so far, and so do developers and gamers."
Last week, Ouya announced a new initiative that will match a developer's crowd-funded capital dollar-for-dollar in exchange for a period of exclusivity. This move, Uhrman explained, is a manifestation of Ouya's belief that "content is critical" to the platform's future success. That success, though, will take time.
"Five days after launch, reviews came out and people were writing us off. If every company that got mixed results right out of the gate would have given up, we wouldn't have an iPhone, we wouldn't have an iPod."

Capy Games reveals sales breakdown on hit multiplatform game by device and price
[h=3]Capybara Games[/h]
Capybara Games' critically acclaimed Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP was already considered a hit, but the Toronto-based developer today released aninfographic providing insight into not just the game's level of success, but where and how it's enjoyed that success.
According to Capy, Sword & Sworcery has sold more than 1.5 million units since its March 2011 launch as an iPad game. Since then, it has been brought to iPhone, Android, PC, Mac, and Linux.
Its original home has been the most lucrative for Capy, with iOS sales accounting for 55 percent of the game's revenue. The game's participation in three pay-what-you-want Humble Bundle sales promotions has also helped out, accounting for about 20 percent of sales, with Steam adding another 19 percent on top of that. Behind those, Google Play reaped 5 percent of the game's revenue, though it didn't arrive on that storefront until the very end of 2012.
Capy also broke down the ratio of copies sold for a discount versus those that fetched full price. Apple users proved more willing to buy the game at full price, with 86 percent of sales coming at the original $5 price. The game normally sells for $8 on Steam, which saw a 50-50 split in discount versus full price sales. The game saw more thrifty customers on Google Play, with only 23 percent of people paying the full $5 for the game on the Android storefront.

Microsoft's priorities are Windows, Office, Xbox, and Surface. Windows Phone is no where near the top and that is the main reason why it has failed to make the impact many hoped for in the three years it has been around. While Microsoft can take the hit and play the long-game, the same cannot be said for Nokia, the other main player in the eco-system. While it has done all it can to evolve the platform, it needs Microsoft to step up and begin innovating. Bryan Biniak, Nokia VP, agrees: 'We are trying to evolve the cultural thinking [at Microsoft] to say 'time is of the essence.' Waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets, doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today.'"

The idea of Samsung as a Google rival isn't unprecedented. For the past several quarters, Samsung has progressively molded Android to its own vision: layered with TouchWiz and sprinkled with all sorts of Samsung-centric apps, the software interface on Samsung devices is deviating rapidly away from the 'stock' Android that runs on other manufacturers' devices. During this year's unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall, Samsung executives onstage barely mentioned the word 'Android,' and played up features designed specifically for the device. Establishing its own brand identity by moving away from 'stock' Android has done Samsung a lot of good: its smartphones and tablets not only stand out from the flood of Android devices on the market, but it's given the company an opportunity to position itself as the one true rival to iOS. While other Android manufacturers struggle, Samsung has profited. If Samsung continues to gain strength, it could become a huge issue for Google, which has its own eye on the hardware segment. Although Google purchased Motorola in 2011 for $12.5 billion, it hasn't yet remolded the brand in its own image, claiming that the subsidiary's existing pipeline of products first needs to be flushed into the ecosystem. But that reluctance could be coming to an end: reports suggest that Google will pump $500 million into marketing theMoto X, an upcoming 'hero' smartphone meant to reestablish Motorola's dominance of the Android space. If the Moto X succeeds, and Google decides to push aggressively into the branded hardware space, it could drive Samsung even further away from core Android. Never mind issuing TouchWiz updates until the original Android interface is virtually unrecognizable—with its industry heft, Samsung could potentially boot Google Play from the home-screen and substitute it with an apps-and-content hub of its own design. That would take a lot of work, of course: first, Samsung would need to build a substantial developer ecosystem, and then it would need to score great deals with movie studios and other content providers. But as Amazon and Apple have shown, such things aren't impossible. The only questions are whether (a) Samsung has the will to devote the necessary time and resources to such a project, and (b) if it's willing to transform its symbiotic relationship with Google into an antagonistic one.

A few days ago, the CyanogenMod teamed named Nemesis, a series of planned improvements to the user interface. An anonymous reader writes with news of the first part: a new camera application designed to replace the neglected stock Android camera app. From the article:"As cameras and camera software becomes an increasingly important part of our mobile experience, a great photography experience on your smartphone can make all the difference. The CyanogenMod project has decided to take smartphone photography a lot more seriously with the release of Focal, and all new camera app for CM users everywhere."Android Police also has an early look with screenshots. The menu system in particular looks a lot nicer to use than the current cumbersome interface to white balance/exposure/scene settings. Focal should be merged into nightly releases soon.

But CEO expects to see a few developers making $1 million by the end of the year
Just 27 per cent of Ouya owners have paid for a game on the micro-console, company CEO Julie Uhrman has revealed.
Speaking to The Verge, Uhrman said despite the low number, the figure was actually significant for a console focused on free gaming.
Every developer who makes a title for the Ouya must offer some form of free play, whether that is through the free-to-play model or a demo of the gameplay.
Uhrman said 13 of the console's top 20 grossing apps had recorded a monetisation rate of eight per cent, that is, consumers upgrading from free to paid.
Despite the low sales so far, the Ouya CEO remained confident the console would see a few developers make their first million dollars by the end of the year.

Android tablets own 50 per cent of the market compared to iPad's 40 per cent.
Shipments of Apple's iPad are expected to drop to ten to twelve million units in the third quarter compared to the 14.6 million announced in the second quarter, supply sources have told Digitimes.
From the first quarter to the second, shipments of iPad and iPad minis dropped around five million.
Apple is known for its rapid update of devices, so this decline could be down to consumers holding out until the next update, or possibly even moving on to competitors who spend more time on current devices rather than its future gadgets.
With the electronics company being so on top of its game by keeping products ahead of the market, it could be shooting itself in the foot.
Android OEMs have also cut the price of their devices, which also affected the iPad shipments in the second quarter, with the Google OS-powered tablets owning around 50 per cent of the market leaving Apple lagging behind with 40 per cent.
The new iPad products are not expected until later this year, meaning that unless it considers a significant price cut on current products, then this decline could become a pattern in its results.

The original Google and ASUS-developed Nexus 7 was launched around a year ago, and the pair have now released a shiny new version, again called the Nexus 7, which makes the grand boast of having "the world’s sharpest seven-inch tablet screen."
It sports more than 2.3 million pixels, equivalent to 323 pixels per inch, meaning text, images and video will have HD quality.
Google will first show love to its Stateside kin by launching in the US on July 30th, claiming more unspecified countries will follow.
The new mini slate weighs 290g and battery power will enable nine hours of video playback or ten hours of web browsing or e-reading, with wireless charging on offer if it does run out of juice.
Google's new Play Games app will act as a rival to Apple's Game Centre, allowing gamers to track achievements and compete with friends or other players globally, with titles like Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne optimised specifically for the device.
Baudouin Corman, VP of publishing for the Americas, Gameloft, said: "Asphalt 8 is the ideal game to demonstrate the great capabilities of Google's newest device. With incredible graphics, and lifelike physics, Nexus 7 helps push tablet gaming forward and brings our vision for Asphalt 8 to reality."
With some families sharing tablets between a household, the 7 comes with customisable spaces to let each user have customisable spaces for home screens, wallpaper, apps, and other content, which is achieved with the new Android Jelly Bean 4.3 upgrade.
In terms of specs, the tablet comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, 2GB of RAM, wi-fi or 4G LTE – the latter is supported by 'hundreds of global networks,' scratch resistant glass, 1.2MP front-facing camera and 5MP rear camera, NFC, and an 8.65mm depth.
