iOS users already had access to the BBC Sport app's customizable "quick links" feature, which provides more direct access to favorite sports, but an update has just taken the idea a bit further. Quick links now work across Android and the freshly-minted Kindle Fire version too, and they additionally allow you to filter news according to which football club(s) you want to follow and which bits of multi-million-pound transfer gossip you'd rather just ignore. Other, more general improvements include refreshed indexes for a total of 41 different sports and greater prominence given to major tournaments like Formula 1 and the Ashes. If you want to check out the app on aKindle Fire or Fire HD, you'll need to be in the UK -- an international version is still in the works and will be "available soon." There's a hat-trick of relevant download links below.

The folks at iFixit are braver souls than us, taking on NVIDIA's tank-like new gaming handheld, the Shield, in a teardown. Shield's cavernous shell houses a mess of multicolored parts, and hilariously reveals its Batman mask-esque properties when freed of said parts. Though it certainly doesn't look like an easy process, the repair site offers a six out of 10 rating; it specifically cites the battery and screen as being tricky to replace.
NVIDIA's Shield was a big surprise at this year's Consumer Electronics Show -- CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed up with the device on-stage during his company's press briefing, where he used it to demonstrate the just unveiled Tegra 4 processor. We finally got our hands on the final retail version earlier this month and you can find the full review right here. Consumers can also finally purchase the $300 handheld as of yesterday.

Blackberry promised us back at BBLive that we'd see BBM on Android and iOS devices before the end of the summer. Well, we've hit the dog days of August, and while most of those devices are still BBM-free, it appears a select few Androids are finally getting to beta test the app. Blackberry OS reports that email invites are rolling out now to folks registered with BlackBerry's Beta Zone to test out BBM. Other than registration, users simply need a handset running Android 4.0 and up and they'll be messaging across the great platform divide in no time. We've reached out to the good people at BlackBerry for comment on the matter, and will update this post when we hear back.
Update: We just got an official comment on the beta rollout, and it turns out the it had a limited number of slots, which have all been claimed:

To date, Firefox OS has only had a presence in Europe. Now, it's now venturing overseas to Latin America with a launch on Movistar. Both Colombians and Venezuelans can buy the Alcatel OneTouch Fire and ZTE Open from the carrier today. Whether or not the phones represent bargains will depend on the country, however. Venezuelans wanting the OneTouch Fire and Open will have to buy them at steep respective prices of 1,739BEF ($277) and 1,159BEF ($184) on contract, while Colombians can buy either device for 199,900 pesos ($106) prepaid or 99,900 pesos ($53) on a one-year agreement. We're still months away from the release of Firefox OS phones in the US, but the Latin American launch at least gets us one step closer.

While Android 4.3 is a relatively minor upgrade in the grand scheme of things -- bringing restricted profiles and some added graphical grunt to the platform -- it seems that the new OS version is wreaking havoc on some Nexus 4 devices. On Google's Product Forums, most people having problems report that after the update is downloaded and installed, their handsets either freeze on the 'X' splash screen or get stuck in a never-ending boot loop. For now, folks report that the only fix is to factory reset their handsets or flash to an older version of Android, and lose all of their saved data in the process. While there are no shortage of people apparently stuck in update purgatory, it's unclear exactly how widespread the problem is; our own in-house Nexus 4 received 4.3 without issue.
Additionally, the new Android version isn't playing nice with Netflix on Nexus 4's, either. After upgrading, launching the Netflix app is causing some handsets to freeze up -- and only resetting the phone with a long press of the power button will get the phone working again. Android engineer Dan Morrill has said that Google is aware of the Netflix issue, however, and that its working on a fix. Regardless, Nexus 4 owners might want to think twice before upgrading. We've reached out to Google for an official comment on these problems, and will update this post should we receive one.

Multiple analyst groups recently gave us a look at second quarter smartphone market share by the manufacturer. Today, Strategy Analytics is breaking down that market share by platform -- and it's clear that Google is still on a roll. Android jumped 10 points year-over-year to reach almost 80 percent of the world smartphone market during the spring quarter, hitting a record high. Some of this rise came at the expense of Apple, which dipped three points, but most of the casualties were in the "others" category led by BlackBerry and Nokia's soon-to-vanish Symbian. Microsoft can claim a small victory, though. Windows Phone climbed slightly to 3.9 percent of the market in Q2, giving it a level of influence not seen in three years. While we're not necessarily looking at the new status quo for the smartphone industry, it's clear that the days ofneck and neck competition are behind us.

A team of researchers from Georgia Tech unveiled their findings yesterday at the Blackhat conference. Their topic is a power charger exploit that installs malware on iOS devices. Who would have thought that thereād be a security hole associated with the charging port on a device? Oh wait, after seeing hotel room locks exploited through their power jack this is an avenue that should be examined with all device security.
The demonstration used a charger and an BeagleBoard. Plugging in the charger is not enough to trigger the exploit, the user must unlock the screen while charging for it to go into action. But once thatās done the game is over. Their demo removes the Facebook app and replaces it with an infected impostor while leaving the icon in the same place on your home screen. They notified Apple of their findings and a patch will roll out with iOS7. So when would you plug your device into an untrusted charger? Their research includes a photo from an airport where an iPad is connected to the USB port of a public charging station.
The summary on the Blackhat site has download icons for the white paper and presentation slides. At the time of writing we had a hard time getting them to download but succeeded after several tries.

he father of Linux, Linus Torvalds, once said, 'If Microsoft ever does applications for Linux it means I've won.' Microsoft yesterday released one of its cash cows, Microsoft Office, for Android. Since Microsoft has a very vague idea of what users want and is suffering from lock-in, the app is just an Android front end of Office 365 and is accessible only by the paid users. There are already quite a lot of office suites available on Android including Office Pro, QuickOffice and KingSoft, so Microsoft will have to struggle there. Still it's a Microsoft core application coming to Linux. So, it looks like Linus has won."

Apple's iOs has been known as a bastion of security for many years, but three researchers have now shown iPhones and iPads can be hacked in just under 60 seconds using nothing more than a charger. OK, so it's not just a charger ā but the Mactans charger does delete an official app (say Facebook) replacing it with an official-looking one which is actually malware which could access your contacts, messages, emails, phone calls and even capture your passwords. Apple says it will fix the flaw, but not until the release of iOS 7, the date of which hasn't been confirmed yet. So watch out for chargers left lying around ..."(For less in the way of auto-playing video ads with sound, check out the Mac Observer's take, which concludes "[I]t's nifty that Apple is addressing the issue in iOS 7. We'd also like to see it fixed in iOS 6. Apple has historically seen iPhone users upgrade to the newest version iOS in staggeringly high numbers, but eliminating this problem across the board seems the wiser choice.")

But revenues on iOS more than double those from Android
The number of downloads on Google Play was ten per cent higher than on iOS during the last quarter, according to research.
Stats from analytics firm App Annie claimed that India, Russia and Brazil were helping drive increased downloads on Android devices.
Despite getting more downloads however, the iOS App Store was generating over twice as much revenue as its Google Play counterpart.
Games were said to dominate revenue share for both app stores, representing 75 per cent of revenue on iOS, and 80 per cent on Google Play.
The UK, along with the USA and Japan, were ranked as the top countries by revenue on iOS during Q2 2013.

Adjust.io SDK 2.0 guarantees privacy and is completely debuggable.
Adeven has announced the update of its adjust.io SDK 2.0 which will provide developers, marketeers and agencies reliable and precise data gathering and delivering tools.
The update arrives in good time before the release of iOS7, and will prepare developers for the new platform allowing them to make the necessary changes to their software to introduce it with ease and minimal issues.
Paul Muller, CTO of Adeven, said: "Apple's move towards the IDFA is an all-positive shift towards landmark mobile user data regulation. Now that we are all looking for the same thing again, it will make things a lot easier."
The move will strengthen user capability to control information on app usage. Since the update, Adeven's new software development kit provides all that it did previously with iOS 6, however with improved consistency and detail.
Also with the improvement, developers can better track what their users are doing on the apps, and how they interact with it on and off line.
Christian Wellenbrock, lead developer, commented: "We compute the session length, count and many other more specific metrics that have proven to be extremely useful for the developer to make more informed decisions about their campaign."
Previously Adeven took Facebook's mobile measurement skills to app advertisers, allowing ad sources to be measured and compared.
The updates for this service are available for iOS and Android as well as Windows phone in the near future.

The iPhone 5s is a rumoured smartphone widely speculated to be Appleās next model ā possibly an interim and multi-coloured smartphone.
This thus far fictional product run along the just as rumourediPhone 6, which is expected to be the next full-fat new super-phone from Apple.
Estimating new handsets isnāt a total finger in the air situation however ā since Apple is fairly regular with its iPhone launches, and not entirely unpredictable with their numerical naming systems either.
To reiterate, both these handsets are pure rumour at this point. But the collective weight of analysis nose tapping, spec leaks and what have been interested as hints from Apple have painted something of a vague picture we might hope bears some accuracy to what Apple finally rolls out the door. Just be prepared to read the word rumour a lot.
iPhone 5s release date
Predictions for when the next iPhone emerges are the dame whether your talking about the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6, the iPhone Nano, iPhone 5C, or iPhone Galaxy S ā a September/October release date would seem to chime with Appleās metronomic release schedule.
This is coupled with the fact iOS7 ā itās next operating system which is a least confirmed ā should emerge around this time too, so a joint launch would seem likely.
Considering weāre in an information vacuum, making any more specific predictions than that could be described as hazardous. No, of course that hasnāt stopped anyone making them.
Rumours site iFun came out with the bold claim: 'The next-generation iPhone will be according to our information on 6 September come on the market. In addition to that day, ātwo new types of devicesā to be available ā and thus are not two different colour variations or memory meant. This information can reach us from a very credible and serious source.'
Bold claims indeed. September 18th has also been thrown in the air. And all dates you read should come served with a generous side pinch of salt.
iPhone 5s colours
Once of the most persistent rumours is that Apple will release an iPhone in multiple colours, whether it be called the iPhone 5s or iPhone Light ā much like the Nokia Lumia 920/820 range.
This would go against the usually conservative design principles of iPhones past. The early ones didnāt even offer a white version.
However it did go ahead and release the rainbow for the iPod Nano range, so it wouldnāt be an entirely unprecedented move.
Would more colours tempt you to get the next iPhone? Vote here and join the tech community by liking our Facebook page.
iPhone 5s budget model?
Apple has historically been happy to sit at the high end of the phone market, hovering up lots of margin on the more expensive models, while Samsung, Sony, HTC, Nokia and the rest battle it out for lower ends of the smartphone market.
However internet tittle tattle is rife that the firm will come out with a cheaper phone. One of the earliest signs was that Tim Cook made a few vague hints earlier in the year towards that point, explaining how the iPod has dropped in price points dramatically over the years.
The rumours had existed before that, and the rationale behind them was that Apple would be able to sell them in developing markets, where cheaper Android and Nokia devices tend to do better.
Whether this will be the iPhone 5S or something else entirely (the iPhone 5C has begun to be banded around as a name) remains to be seen. If either emerge at all, of course.
iPhone 5s specs
A number of supposed pics and specs info have bubbled up online to various sources, some apparently from the factory floor.
The most consistent rumours involve a longer battery life, a faster A7 Apple processor, and the inclusion of an extra flash that should help -LED flash that should improve low-light camera performance.
Having said that, if the next model does happen to be some sort of lower cost model, it might not be a dramatic change.
