Following the formal reveal of the LG G2 yesterday, UK network Three was quick to report its plan to offer the handset "soon," so we thought we'd follow up with all the other major providers to see where else you'll eventually be able to find one. O2 is also on board, although it would only commit to a vague release window of "later this year." Vodafone said it currently has no plans to offer the G2, and while EE has "nothing to announce," we couldn't get any assurance that it wouldn't show up on its 4G network, or on the Orange or T-Mobile brands. Retailer Carphone Warehouse has put a tentative October arrival date on its website, and although we're still waiting on a response from Phones 4U, you'll more than likely be able to find it there, too. So, if you've developed a particular taste for the slim bezel design and quirky button placement, you'll have at least a few options come launch time.

Some good news for the phone makers in Waterloo: the US Defense Information System Agency is OK-ing BlackBerry's first two BB10 handsets for use on Department of Defense networks, confirming that the phones have all the necessary security measures in place. With the governmental go-ahead, the DISA's building out an infrastructure to support 10,000 Q10 and Z10 handsets by fall -- a number expected to triple by year's end. More info on the approval after the break, including some understated gloating from BlackBerry.

We were pleasantly surprised by the latest version of the Nexus 7, which landed in the US at the end of July. A little more patience has been required of Nexus fans on the other side of the pond, however, but the wait will soon be coming to an end. According to Pocket-Lint, ASUS has confirmed that the device will launch at midnight on August 28th, and will offer an asking price of £199.99 for the 16GB WiFi model and £239.99 for the 32GB WiFi-only version. There's no word on an LTE unit hitting British shores, but we'll keep you posted if we hear more.

Google's second gen Nexus 7 tablet is a worthy successor to the original, boasting an improved design both internally and externally. It's thinner and lighter, has a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, 2GB of RAM, a higher resolution 1920X1200 display and it's running the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean release. The display alone was a nice upgrade in a 7-inch slate that retails for well under $300. However, it turns out the new Nexus 7 is also one of the fastest tablets out there right now, with benchmark numbers that best some of the top tablets on the market, especially in graphics and gaming. From a price/performance standpoint, Google's second generation Nexus 7 seems to be the tablet to beat right now."

Microsoft advises that a cryptographic problem in the PEAP-MS-CHAPv2 protocol used in Windows Phone 8 to provide WPA2 authentication allows a victim's encrypted domain credentials to be collected by an attacker posing as a typical WiFi access point. Redmond further states that this problem cannot be patched, although a set of manually entered configuration changes involving root certificates on all WP8 phones and on WiFi access points will apparently address the issue. WP7.8 phones are likewise vulnerable."

NVidia has now open-sourced the operating system that powers the gaming console to encourage its modification and further development. Powered by NVidia's homegrown Tegra 4 processor, the console runs Android, which shouldn't surprise many as the company moves ahead with its open-sourcing intentions. The GPU company has said that the SHIELD is an 'open gaming platform' that allows for 'an open ecosystem,' enabling developers to develop content as well as applications that takes advantage of the underlying hardware and which can be enjoyed on bigger displays as well as mobile screen."Playing with it isn't without risks (like potentially voiding the warranty), but NVIDIA's blog post says they're also providing a recovery image to fall back to.

New research which takes advantage of the increase in cell phone use after 9pm due to the popularity of 'free nights and weekends' plans showed no corresponding increase in crash rates (PDF). Additionally, the researchers analyzed the effects of legislation banning cellphone use, enacted in several states, and similarly found that the legislation had no effect on the crash rate. 'One thought is that drivers may compensate for the distraction of cellphone use by selectively deciding when to make a call or consciously driving more carefully during a call.' Score this a -1 for common sense

So the search giant is 'spooked' by the giant Korean OEM. It shouldn't be.
Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal quoted insiders from Google who said the top brass wanted to curb Samsung's growing dominance in Android.
The merest glimpse at the stats show why Google might be spooked.
According to IDC, Samsung commands around 40 per cent of the Android ecosystem, and 95 per cent of the profits.
None of the other OEMs is even close. And the halo around the Galaxy brand is now such that even when a clearly excellent and lovely-looking device like the HTC One comes along, well frankly no one gives a shit.
So anyway, this has Google worried. One the one hand, Samsung is far too powerful. On the other, it's the single greatest evangelist for the Android cause.
What's a young girl to do?
Well, it will do something that virtually no consumers are doing: turn to Motorola.
Google bought Moto in 2011 in a bewilderingly huge deal considering the stink of death that hung around the once-great device maker.
Yes, it paid £12.5bn for the company that had recently launched the KRZR. Certainly the worst phone I ever had (for about a fortnight). And that name. They should have called it the Voldemort, so that timid children never had to say it out loud.
But Google had big plans for the Fredo Corleone of Android. Apparently, Android head Andy Rubin described the buyout of Motorola as a “hedge” against an OEM monopoly.
How's that hedge coming along?
The Dext? The Droid? The reinvented Razr? All so very ho-hum. When's the last time you saw anyone using a Motorola phone?
But now we have the Moto X – apparently the first 'proper' Google-made phone.
As far as I can see, this is an unexceptional device, spec wise (the Moto X has no European launch schedule yet, so I haven't handled one).
But it has two USPs:
1. Hands-free voice control
2. Made in the USA
As you may know, the X has voice built right in – like its cousin Google Glass. There's no touch required, you just say 'OK Google' and start making that obscene phone call or nuisance tweet.
All very sensible. What's the point of voice control, if you have to touch the screen?
Of course, the flipside of this is that the X also listens to you all the time (and possibly feeds the info back to Google so it can display only the most relevant ads).
Yeah, it's a grass. And no one likes those.
But worse that that: NOBODY USES VOICE CONTROL.
Unless it's kids trying to get Siri to say '****'.
The Made in the USA thing is more interesting. As great artists like Kim Wilde (Kids in America) and Miley Cyrus (Party in the USA) have proved, you can get a lot of leverage in the US if you suck up to it.
Google has been running ads proclaiming X to be the 'first smartphone designed, engineered and built in the US'.
(Not manufactured, you'll notice).
This looks like very effective marketing to me. Americans are patriotic people. I look forward to the Moto Yee-Har and the Moto **** Yeah!
Good luck to Moto and Google. We all like a bit of competition, I suppose.
But ultimately, i think the search giant is wrong to be scared. Imagine if Samsung were to go a la carte. It's hardly going to revive Bada is it? And a 'proprietary' version of Android would mean no Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube or Google Play Store.
As magnetic as Galaxy is, take those babies off the home screen and watch the market share plummet.
I'm sure that Samsung's own experience with the Samsung App Store (which a developer told me last week sells virtually nothing) would give it a little window into a world without Google apps. What a scary place.
No, Samsung is better off keeping Google close. The other way lies Omnia.

An abundance of hi-res images have surfaced allegedly showing the casing for Apple’s budget iPhone.
Rumoured to be called either the iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C, the smartphone looks set to have a plastic casing, and while all 58 photos uploaded by Sonny Dickson show a white iPhone, it is expected that the budget device will come in a number of colours.
In July, pictures appeared on WeiPhone showing the casing in green, yellow and orange.
The ‘budget iPhone’ rumours have been around for some time, with most believing that it would be called the iPhone 5S. But, last week more images appeared on WeiPhone, this time showing what appeared to be the retail packaging for the device with the words ‘iPhone 5C’ written on each plastic case.
The budget iPhone is expected to be unveiled in September along with the next flagship, which is likely to be called the iPhone 6, as well as the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.

LG has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G2, which has all its physical buttons placed on the back of the device.
The front and sides of the new phone are completely void of buttons, with the power button and volume controls located just below the camera lens on the back of the G2.
LG puts this design move down to the fact that the phone’s 5.2-inch screen makes it difficult for users to properly access the side keys.
LG also explained that powering up the device is not just restricted to using the physical button. When the G2 is lying on a surface facing up, it can be powered on by tapping the display twice.
Specs include a 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 13MP rear camera, 2.1MP from camera, 3,000mAh battery, and Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2.

FireCore's Infuse app is already handy for iOS users who want to play less common video formats; with the 1.3 release, it might prove vital. The new version brings AirPlay, letting viewers push any of 14 video codecs to their Apple TV. Transfers should also be simple now that users can use a web browser or FTP client to copy videos over WiFi. There's even a social aspect to 1.3 -- Infuse now sends play counts and ratings to trakt.tv, and users can advertise what they're watching through Facebook and Twitter. If VLC for iOS isn't quite your cup of tea, you can spend $5 at the App Store to try FireCore's take on mobile movie playback.

One of the key updates to XBMC promised back in March was to fix the open source software's Android capabilities. That's finally arrived in the June and July cycle of the Gotham build, where XBMC on Android now has Zeroconf support. That essentially lets any Android device act as an AirPlay receiver without any third-partyworkarounds. Further, media launched from an Android browser can now be played by default on XBMC, where it couldn't before. Other new features from the release include the immediate addition of ripped CDs to the music library, ripping support for AAC and WMA, new settings descriptions, locked profiles and general performance tweaks. Head on over to the source link for more on what the latest XBMC offers, and feel free to download test versions of the software if you like to live on the bleeding edge.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/07/h...s-cash-drawer/ Carrying cash can be a drag, but it's often an even bigger nuisance for shopkeepers with iPad point-of-sale terminals. Because of a focus on swiping plastic, storage solutions for your dollar bills take a back seat. The WindFall Cash Drawer is Heckler Designs' stylish US-made option that, according to the company, offers the smallest footprint of any drawer currently available -- it's probably the brightest, too. Cash Drawer follows the aesthetics of the Arizona designer's other pieces; namely, heavy-duty steel construction, rounded corners and minimalist design. Is your storefront already rocking a WindFall stand for Apple's slate? Well, you're in luck, as the nouveau till sports a secure mounting and cable management system for it. Sure there's a slight bit of irony surrounding its current lack of pricing, but don't let that get you down. When it launches this fall, it'll be available exclusively from ShopKeep POS.

After months of leaks and rumors, it's finally time for us to take a look at the real LG G2. The successor to last year's Optimus G was just officially announced and, as you have come to expect from the usual flagships, it's loaded with plenty of specs and clever features, not to mention some interesting new smartphone design approaches. The new device, which runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, comes with a larger display than its predecessor, packing a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS panel. It also offers a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC. Additionally, you can expect to find a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (as well as a 2.1MP front-facing cam), 24 bit/192kHz HiFi playback, a non-removable 3,000mAh battery, 2GB of RAM and your choice of 16GB or 32GB internal storage. It'll come in white and black, and LG tells us that the G2 will be rolling out to markets around the world over the next eight weeks, and we have confirmation that all four major US carriers have committed to adding the device to their lineup.
What about those unique design traits? As you may have already seen in the leaked images (or if you happened to look at the press image above), the backside of the phone is much busier than on most other handsets. LG opted to put the volume rocker and power button just below the rear camera rather than the edge of the phone. The idea for this, we're told, is to make the handheld experience a little less awkward on such a large phone. Since the device is wider than smartphones of olden times, LG wanted to put more controls in a place that your fingers naturally rest. LG is also boasting thinner bezels -- 0.1-inch thick, to be precise -- thanks to a new dual-routing method in which the touch sensor uses two connectors.
On the software side, LG has done more than just throw in a few ringtones from the Vienna Boys' Choir. It offers features like AnswerMe, which answers incoming calls when you put the phone up to your ear, and Slide Aside, which lets you do a three-finger gesture to "slide" open apps off the screen for multitasking. Text Link is another interesting idea, where the phone takes relevant text and inserts embeddable links to them in other apps -- of course, this is similar to what we've seen on iOS previously. There's also Guest Mode, which allows another user to access the phone (LG refers to this as a type of Kid Mode) by drawing a different gesture on the lock screen. We lay out the software in more detail here, so check it out for more info. If you're interested in the full spec sheet and how it compares to other flagships, we've got that here. We also have our hands-on here for more impressions of the device, as well as a press release and gallery below.

That new Android Device Manager feature Google announced last week? It's live now, according to numerous tipsters (and several of our own Android-sporting editors). For the time being, the functionality seems to only be present on handsets, arriving via an over the air update. The new feature lets you ring your phone at maximum volume even when silenced, locate the device on a Google Map and wipe it clean, should the other two options not pan out.

HP might have abandoned ship long ago, but some developers are still trying to make the TouchPad happen. While successfully running Android on the discontinued tablet (which shipped with the ill-fated webOS) is old hat at this point, there are still a few obstacles standing in the way of achieving full functionality. For TouchPad owners yearning for Bluetooth support, hope has arrived in the form of developer James Sullins' unofficial Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 build. If you've already modified your tablet to work with Android, installing Sullins' Bluetooth addition seems to be a pretty straightforward process. Those of you who've stuck with your TouchPad this long (we commend your device loyalty) can download the update at the source link below.

We loved NVIDIA Shield's bone stock Jelly Bean OS in our review, but if you're not a huge fan, NVIDIA's now offering a way to dig in and customize your Shield's OS even more. NVIDIA's made the Shield's software open source as of today, making the OS all the easier to customize. You'll of course have to root your device and, ya know, have an idea of what you're doing in the guts of a computer. NVIDIA warns new owners as much, saying, "To be sure, this is double-diamond stuff. If you're not a coder or already set up with an Android development environment you should skip downloading these tools."
The company's blog post also notes that rooting your Shield or adding a bootloader will potentially void your device's warranty, so hacker beware! Should the associated tasks and NVIDIA's warnings not scare you off, the software is available right here. Our review video of the Shield is just below, in case you missed it last week.

In response to recent reports of safety concerns around third-party chargers for iDevices, Apple announced today that beginning August 16, 2013, you can trade in your third-party adapter and purchase an official Apple charger at a 'special price' — $10 USD. From their website: 'To qualify, you must turn in at least one USB power adapter and bring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to an Apple Retail Store or participating Apple Authorized Service Provider for serial number validation. The special pricing on Apple USB power adapters is limited to one adapter for each iPhone, iPad, and iPod you own and is valid until October 18, 2013.'

The new Office 365 app for Android, launched a week ago, has a super nice UI, but lacks a bunch of basic features and has some really weird oversights — including a classic Microsoft dialog box that offers a choice that makes no sense. 'Overall, it still feels like Microsoft is still trying to funnel people toward its own Windows Phone if they want a better experience. In fact, in a question on an FAQ about how the Android Office app compares to the Windows Phone Office app, Microsoft says this: “Office Mobile on Windows Phone 8 provides a richer, more integrated experience,” and goes on to specify how. That’s a losing strategy when so many other apps — many of them free — offer a richer experience on Android and iOS.' "
