Facebook has begun integrating OpenTable and Rovi TV guide information to its mobile Pages so users can now book a reservation and check out what's coming on TV right within the social networking app. For the former, there'll be a Reservations prompt located in the restaurant's Facebook Page, underneath the address and hours of operation. Simply pick the desired date, time and party size, and you can book a table in seconds. The Rovi integration, on the other hand, provides information on upcoming episodes of your favorite TV shows so you'll know exactly when and which channel it'll be on. The OpenTable and Rovi integrations are live right now on the mobile web as well as in the latest iOS app update, which also lets you tap and search for hashtags. iOS users can go ahead and get it from the source link below, while Android users will have to sit tight for now.

The concept of malware riding shotgun with legitimate mobile apps is not a new one. There have been a slew of cases in which attackers have compromised apps in the Google Play store and inserted malware into the file. But a new attack uncovered by Palo Alto Networks is using a new technique that starts with the user installing an app on her Android phone. The app could be a legitimate one or a malicious one, but it will include some code that, once the app is installed, will reach out to an ad network. Many apps include such code for legitimate ad revenue purposes, but these apps are connecting to a malicious ad network. Once the connection is made, the app will then wait until the user is trying to install another app and will pop up an extra dialog box asking for permission to install some extra code. That code is where the bad things lie. The malicious code immediately gains control of the phone's SMS app for both command and control and in order to sign the victim up for some premium-rate SMS services. The attack is interesting, said Wade Williamson, a senior security analyst at Palo Alto, because the attackers can use a legitimate ad network that's already connected to a group of apps and then at any given time flip the switch and begin using it for malicious purposes.

The PR boffins at LG decided it would be a good idea to release 100 helium-filled balloons, each carrying a voucher entitling the recipient to claim their 950,000 won ($852.54) smartphone. It then took to social media to promote the event, inviting people to witness the balloons' release and encouraging them to grab one of the vouchers. But what must have sounded like a good idea in the marketing meeting quickly dissolved into chaos. People aren’t stupid. They figured out that the only way to get the voucher was to burst the balloons, and they showed up equipped to do so with BB guns, knives on sticks, and other tools."In the ensuing carnage, 20 people were injured. Whoops.

We’ve seen this hack a bunch of times, but this does a great job of internalize all of the phone-side inductive charging components.
It uses the Palm Pixi wireless charging hardware which seems to be the most popular system out there. We’ve already seen that you can add this to any phone that uses USB for charging. But we don’t like the idea of opening the phone to solder connections to the USB header. We also don’t want a USB plug sticking out the bottom of the phone all the time.
This hack satisfies both issues, and it’s actually thanks to the manufacturer. The Samsung Galaxy S4 just happens to have two contacts available inside the removable back plate which are designed for Samsung’s own inductive charging hardware. Contact with the Palm charging hardware is made by pressing copper foil into place. Mating foil traces on the inside of the back cover patch this into the Touchstone receiver hardware which is a direct transplant from a Palm case.
This is touted as a solution that costs under $30. That beats the current price of a genuine Samsung inductive charging kit by a wide margin.

August 12th, 2013, 22:53 Posted By: wraggster

My big birthday present this year was an Ouya -- the $99 Android console that was funded by Kickstarter, powered by dreams, and promoted as a "revolution" by its makers. I've not been big on either consoles or Android platforms as of late, mostly due to being preoccupied elsewhere. But something about Ouya's roguish underdog status and the combination of being a fully functional console and a development kit in one attracted me to it. Plus, it's so dang tiny! You can only fit one-half of a magical elf inside it, and even that took some intense pushing.
Obviously this is not a bleeding-edge console that's going to pump out realistic graphics at 100 fps, but that's not Ouya's thing anyway. So you might be forgiven in thinking that MMO studios might stay far away from it, what with its limited storage space and processing power, but that's actually not the case. Two MMOs that I know of have been released on the Ouya, Vendetta Onlineand Order and Chaos Online, and to me that signals the possibility that there might be more in the future.
So I downloaded both of them fairly quickly and settled onto my couch to check out MMO gaming with a controller on a TV powered by a console smaller than a Coke can. What kind of MMO experience was I going to get with a $99 machine?

The first major update for Deus Ex: The Fall has been released.
The update adds iPad 2 support, meaning anyone owning a second generation version of Apple's tablet can now purchase the game for the first time.
The game's AI has also been enhanced, according to Square Enix. Having taken community feedback on board, the developer has made enemies more effective at tracking the player during active combat and therefore less likely to lose sight of them. The desired result is a more challenging game with smarter enemies.
Square Enix previously released a small patch for The Fall, which removed an unexpected piracy counter-measure that rendered jailbroken device users unable to fire weapons.
In our Deus Ex: The Fall review, we said: "While it has everything the main game has - augmentations, weapon customisation, freedom to use stealth or direct combat, branching dialogue, computers to hack, moral choices - it's all hindered by the touchscreen controls.
"Movement is sluggish, and the twitchy camera and unreliable lock-on make combat feel laboured and unresponsive. Stealth in Deus Ex requires a level of finesse that these ungainly controls simply don't provide."

Those BlackBerry Z30 rumors (which was known previously as the A10) might turn out to be for real after all, if this early hands-on video from Vietnamese outletCellphone S is to be believed. The footage shows what is presumably the BlackBerry Z30 in all its glory, with what is apparently a 5-inch AMOLED display with 295 ppi and 720p (1,280 x 720) resolution. Purported specs include a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a rear 8-megapixel camera, a front-facing 2-megapixel cam, a 2,800 mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and it's said to ship with BlackBerry 10.2 as well. Perhaps more interesting to our US audience is that it appears to have the AT&T logo on the back, hinting that it may arrive on our shores sooner than later. Have a peek at the video after the break, and hit the source for more close-up pics of what could be yet another BlackBerry savior.

North Korea likes to say that it's on the cutting edge, even if it usually isn't -- and that now includes a locally-built smartphone, the AS1201 Arirang. We don't know much about the Android handset, but state media claims that it's made in Pyongyang and ships with a domestically produced app. As you'd imagine, many outside of North Korea are skeptical of the AS1201's supposed roots. While it's difficult to verify North Korea Tech's suspicions that a Chinese firm makes the device on North Korea's behalf, the hardware is using stock Android -- you know, the OS designed by those "capitalist American pig-dogs" at Google. There's also the question of the device's real-world usefulness. As long as North Korea bans mobile internet use, the Ariang won't be much more capable than your typical feature phone.

Handset maker's fall from grace means its now exploring possible partnerships to survive
After what can only be described as a very tough year so far, BlackBerry has finally admitted that the end may be close.
In a press release announcing the “exploration of strategic alternatives”, the company admits that it is considering “possible joint ventures, strategic partnerships or alliances, a sale of the company or other possible transactions” in an effort to “enhance value and increase scale in order to accelerate BlackBerry 10 deployment”.
BlackBerry adds that it will offer no other comment until it strikes a deal.
"We continue to see compelling long-term opportunities for BlackBerry 10, we have exceptional technology that customers are embracing, we have a strong balance sheet and we are pleased with the progress that has been made in our transition,” president and CEO Thorsten Heins said.
“As the Special Committee focuses on exploring alternatives, we will be continuing with our strategy of reducing cost, driving efficiency and accelerating the deployment of BES 10, as well as driving adoption of BlackBerry 10 smartphones, launching the multi-platform BBM social messaging service, and pursuing mobile computing opportunities by leveraging the secure and reliable BlackBerry Global Data Network."

The ZTE which is the first in the Firefox OS range of smartphones, will be available on eBay priced at ÂŁ59.99.
The device will be completely unlocked enabling use on all mobile networks. The exclusive availability on eBay means that the affordable smartphone will be more widely accessible to consumers worldwide.
Mr Dai Wenhong, VP of ZTE Corporation, said “It is great honour to launch the ZTE Open Firefox OS phone worldwide through eBay. ZTE is devoted to providing more options for customers globally and enabling them to live better lives via advanced technology."
The Firefox Operating System - who, with Bango recently changed Firefox Marketplace's payment method, allowing users to pay for apps on their phone bill - uses the web as a platform for all functionality and applications, freeing developers, operators and consumers from the restrictions of current closed ecosystems.
All the usual functions expected from a smartphone are there, plus some added treats such as built in social integration with Twitter and Facebook, Nokia HERE mapping service, Firefox web browser and the Firefox Marketplace.
Apps already available on the marketplace include eBay, Badoo, KAYAK, TMZ, AOL, Wikipedia, Huffington Post, TIME, Facebook, Time Out, Twitter and SoundCloud.
Dr. Li Gong, senior VP of mobile devices at Mozilla, said: "Mozilla is dedicated to moving the web forward as a platform for innovation and building products that people love. We are pleased that now we will put the full power of the web in even more people's hands."
This is the first Firefox OS device powered completely by web technologies. The phone adapts itself to the user's needs, enabling them to swipe straight from the home screen and search directly on the web. If the user enters the name of a band, they can select whether they want music, tickets, videos or listen instantly without having to install an app.
Wenhong, continued: "The ZTE Open offers customers a smartphone experience at an incredible price point, making it ideal for cost conscious consumers or those looking to upgrade to a smartphone for the first time.”

Still committed to the platform which could be a rival to Android.
Launch of the first Tizen based smartphone was expected to be this month, with sales starting in Japan with NTT DoCoMo, however Samsung has delayed it's roll out, apparently due to issues with the OS's app store.
JK Shin, Co-CEO at Samsung, has denied that it is considering dropping Tizen, which is a Linux based OS, described by Linux Foundation as an alternative to the Android OS platform.
Samsung should possibly take note from the struggle of new operating systems WebOS and BlackBerry 10, before taking the leap into stopping away from the hugely successful Android and introducing it's own OS.
Even though it says that it is still dedicated to the project, it could be sticking with Android for now as a safe option. However Shin also commented that it has plans to introduce the Tizen platform into cars, bank machines, and point-of-sale devices.
