Just before a smartphone turns up at the debutante ball, the internet comes alive with frenzied claims about what the new hardware will offer. While most of 'em turn out to be wishful thinking on behalf of whoever entered the data, we imagine that standards are a little stricter over at the Wireless Power Consortium. It's there that a listing has popped up claiming that BlackBerry's as-yet unannounced Z30 will support Qi wireless charging. The listing goes on to say that the smartphone will pack a medium power receiver, capable of pulling 120 watts from a charger, which should be enough to juice that (rumored) 2,800mAh battery in short order.

A muddled sense of direction isn't the only problem affecting the new generation ofNexus 7 slates, it seems, as some users are also reporting issues with multitouch on the 1,920 x 1,200 display. The clip below the fold demonstrates the bug, and shows the touchscreen registering phantom inputs before freaking out for a couple of seconds.Over the past few weeks, chatter on the XDA Developers and Google Product forums suggests it's fairly common, with a response from Google on the latter stating: "The Android team is aware of this issue and investigating." We haven't had the same troubles with a 2013 Nexus 7 in our possession (running Android 4.3 build JSS15J,FYI), and while the root of the problem is still up for discussion, let's hope funky software is to blame -- no one wants the hassle of replacing faulty hardware, especiallyGoogle, when an OTA fix will do.

In the realm of Samsung flip-phone rumors, color us confused. Earlier, we saw a manual on Samsung's site for a Galaxy Folder (SHF-E400K), with dual 800 x 480 displays, a dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, gold trim and LTE support. Now, we're seeing a so-called Samsung Hennessy (SCH-W789), another dual-screen clamshell model with 320 x 480 resolution on both of its 3.27-inch screens, a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, 5-megapixel camera, dual-sim support and, yes, a "Luxury Gold" color trim option. The latter model has leaked multiple times from Asian rumor sites, while the presence of a manual and photos for the Folder seem to all but confirm that model. We remain skeptical, though, as the sources may have mixed up the similar-looking models, and in any case they may never arrive in the US. If they're real, though, we've obviously underestimated the size of the cognac-and-cigar throwback market.

No one can pretend it's business as usual at BlackBerry, but for the moment the company is pressing on with new releases. Today marks the official launch of theheavily-leaked 9720, which actually takes the whole carry-on-regardless approach a bit too literally by sticking with BB 7.1 instead of the new (and nice) BB OS 10. The phone has a 2.8-inch 480 x 360 display (214ppi) above a "re-engineered" (but distinctly Curve-like) thumbpad, a 5-megapixel rear camera and 512MB of RAM. There's also a dedicated BBM key to take you straight to the messaging app and the OS has been tweaked with a not-so-revolutionary onscreen button to make photo sharing easier. The handset is destined for Europe, Asia and Latin America "in the coming weeks" and ought to hit a much, much lower price point than the Q5.

Back in June, Verizon gave us fair warning that it would start selling the HTC One"later this summer." Well, we're just about halfway through August, and while you can't buy a VZW One just yet, you can at least let Verizon know you're interested. The carrier has added a sign-up page to its website, where eager beavers can put in their e-mail addresses so that they'll be the first to receive more information as it becomes available. Unfortunately, that splash page says nothing about when the device might ship or what it will cost with the usual two-year agreement. So for now, then, this page is really just for the most impatient of HTC fans.

Sprint's eggplant-colored Galaxy S III must have proven a hit, as the carrier is already following up with a version of the Galaxy S 4 in Purple Mirage. Like its ancestor, the purple GS4 is strictly a palette swap; the $200 you pay on contract still gets you a 16GB version of Samsung's familiar 2013 flagship, just in a more vibrant shade. If you're tired of conservative smartphone colors, though, you could do far worse than to buy Sprint's latest royal-hued smartphone... especially if you're a platinum-selling rocker from Minnesota.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison thinks that Apple will collapse without Steve Jobs at the helm. In a televised interview with CBS News, scheduled to air August 13, Ellison called the deceased Jobs 'brilliant' and compared him to iconic creators such as Thomas Edison and Pablo Picasso. When asked about Apple's future now that Jobs is dead, Ellison didn't hold back: 'We already know, we saw — we conducted the experiment, it's been done.' Raising his hand above his head, presumably to indicate the rise of Apple's fortunes during Jobs' initial reign, Ellison said: 'We saw Apple with Steve Jobs.' Then he lowered his hand: "We saw Apple without Steve Jobs." In other words, the period following Jobs' ouster, when the company's revenues declined and it launched whole portfolios of consumer products that failed. 'We saw Apple with Steve Jobs,' Ellison continued, raising his hand above his head again — this time, to suggest that incandescent period following Jobs' return to the company, when it released the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and a variety of bestselling PCs. 'And now, we're going to see Apple without Steve Jobs,' he finished, and his hand fell."

Apple’s replacement scheme for third-party USB chargers will launch in the UK on Friday, August 16th.
The program, which is already available in China, offers consumers a reduced price on official first-party chargers when they hand over third-party chargers that they have ‘concerns about’.
The trade-in scheme comes after a number of reports in China where Apple users have been injured due to faulty, counterfeit chargers.
In the UK, those handing in an unofficial charger to an Apple retail store or select authorised reseller will receive an official one for £8 (original price is £15). The offer only extends to one replacement per device and store reps will record the serial numbers of each customer’s devices to ensure no one takes advantage of the scheme.
If you think you have a counterfeit charger you’ll have until October 18th to exchange it for an official one.
New Apple devices are expected on September 10th, including the next flagship phone - which looks set to be called the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6 – as well as the iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2.
Rumours have also surfaced today suggesting that retina display will be making its way to both new iPads.

Firefox's first smartphone, the ZTE Open, will be available on eBay's UK and US sites.
The device will be priced at £59.99 and will be completely unlocked enabling use on all mobile networks.
The exclusive availability on eBay means that the affordable smartphone will be more widely accessible to consumers worldwide.
The Firefox Operating System - which allows users to pay for apps on their phone bill - uses the web as a platform for all functionality and applications, freeing developers, operators and consumers from the restrictions of current closed ecosystems. eBay will exclusively sell the device in orange.

The iPhone 5s is a rumoured smartphone widely speculated to be Apple’s next model – possibly an interim and multi-coloured smartphone.
This thus far fictional product run along the just as rumourediPhone 6, which is expected to be the next full-fat new super-phone from Apple.
Estimating new handsets isn’t a total finger in the air situation however – since Apple is fairly regular with its iPhone launches, and not entirely unpredictable with their numerical naming systems either.
To reiterate, both these handsets are pure rumour at this point. But the collective weight of analysis nose tapping, spec leaks and what have been interested as hints from Apple have painted something of a vague picture we might hope bears some accuracy to what Apple finally rolls out the door. Just be prepared to read the word rumour a lot.
iPhone 5s release date
Predictions for when the next iPhone emerges are the dame whether your talking about the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6, the iPhone Nano, iPhone 5C, or iPhone Galaxy S – a September/October release date would seem to chime with Apple’s metronomic release schedule.
This is coupled with the fact iOS7 – it’s next operating system which is a least confirmed – should emerge around this time too, so a joint launch would seem likely.
Considering we’re in an information vacuum, making any more specific predictions than that could be described as hazardous. No, of course that hasn’t stopped anyone making them.
Rumours site iFun came out with the bold claim: 'The next-generation iPhone will be according to our information on 6 September come on the market. In addition to that day, “two new types of devices†to be available – and thus are not two different colour variations or memory meant. This information can reach us from a very credible and serious source.'
Bold claims indeed. September 18th has also been thrown in the air. And all dates you read should come served with a generous side pinch of salt.
iPhone 5s colours
Once of the most persistent rumours is that Apple will release an iPhone in multiple colours, whether it be called the iPhone 5s or iPhone Light – much like the Nokia Lumia 920/820 range.
This would go against the usually conservative design principles of iPhones past. The early ones didn’t even offer a white version.
However it did go ahead and release the rainbow for the iPod Nano range, so it wouldn’t be an entirely unprecedented move.
Would more colours tempt you to get the next iPhone? Vote here and join the tech community by liking our Facebook page.
iPhone 5s budget model?
Apple has historically been happy to sit at the high end of the phone market, hovering up lots of margin on the more expensive models, while Samsung, Sony, HTC, Nokia and the rest battle it out for lower ends of the smartphone market.
However internet tittle tattle is rife that the firm will come out with a cheaper phone. One of the earliest signs was that Tim Cook made a few vague hints earlier in the year towards that point, explaining how the iPod has dropped in price points dramatically over the years.
The rumours had existed before that, and the rationale behind them was that Apple would be able to sell them in developing markets, where cheaper Android and Nokia devices tend to do better.
Whether this will be the iPhone 5S or something else entirely (the iPhone 5C has begun to be banded around as a name) remains to be seen. If either emerge at all, of course.
iPhone 5s specs
A number of supposed pics and specs info have bubbled up online to various sources, some apparently from the factory floor.
The most consistent rumours involve a longer battery life, a faster A7 Apple processor, and the inclusion of an extra flash that should help -LED flash that should improve low-light camera performance.
Having said that, if the next model does happen to be some sort of lower cost model, it might not be a dramatic change.

Visit the ghost of Ouya’s Kickstarter page and you’ll see its audacious mission statement: “It’s time to upend console gamingâ€. Below the bolded goal sits another eye-catching aim: “All games free to playâ€. But in the wake of its global rollout, Ouya has much to do before it meets backers’ and buyers’ expectations. As promised, every game on Ouya does have some form of free component. However, the ways in which the console’s development partners have interpreted the core free-to-test tenet are damaging, with prices that vary from fair to misguided to those built on deceitful foundations.Instead of a shopfront, Ouya’s Discover portal means buyers download games without any information about what they’re getting beyond a brief synopsis. Some games are totally free, others have a fixed price unlock, some – such as Hidden In Plain Sight – operate a pay-what-you-want unlock price point, and all games with premium components experiment with different methods. Canabalt HD, for instance, offers five lives per day for free, with unlimited gaming unlocked for a fee – and it clearly advertises its structure from the beginning. Not every game is as generous. Titles such as The Ball offer no mention of payment until they hit you with paywalls during the game.Nobody expected developers to make their Ouya games for free, but the courtesy of informing gamers about their downloads – whether they’re demos or timed or full games – should have been a non-negotiable feature. The game library feels littered with honeytrap ventures: every download a mystery, every surprise paywall adding to the feeling that Ouya is just a £99 demo box. Tangled truths are a problem dogging all aspects of the machine. External peripheral support works on a game-by-game basis with no indication given on either side; the Discover tab is a confused jumble of tiles where genre categories are more of a suggestion than a filing system; and questionable controller build quality is matched by questionable controller implementation, where few challenges are greater than trying to figure out how to invert the sticks.Ouya has the potential to be much more than it currently is. It’s looking to make devices such as Roku and even Apple TV extinct once apps like XBMC and Netflix are optimised and available for the device, but with countless Android-based competitors due soon, Ouya can’t afford to wait long. This month sees the release of PlayJam’s cheaper and more portable GameStick, with XBMC support out of the box and popular streaming services not far behind. The upcoming subscription-based GamePop and GamePop Mini, meanwhile, are aiming to capitalise on Ouya’s free-to-play communication errors by ensuring that all their games are free for as long as you pay a monthly console subscription.Of all the Android machines going through their final phases of iteration, it’s Mad Catz’s Mojo, a console still without a price or release date, that looks poised to make the biggest challenge. In stark contrast to Ouya’s closed shopfront, Mad Catz is promising access to Google Play and Amazon Appstore for an instantly available catalogue of thousands of titles, and the promise of your existing library of Android games accessible from the moment you turn it on. Despite Ouya’s open-arms policy for developers, the console is closed to end users without the knowledge to side-load software.Whether there’s an appetite for any of these consoles remains to be seen. The wide range of Android devices without unified regulations has given rise to a minefield of titles unoptimised for different platforms, with buyers acting as bug-testers, and an unfriendly and prohibitive space for casual players lured by the promise of cheap and free games. Ouya’s failure to meet even its most fundamental promises and its insistence on a closed Android system is a deflating discovery, and one that casts a worrying shadow over consoles with greater, more open-ended ambitions.

MiiPC – the ‘world’s first family Android PC’ – could be hitting UK store shelves this year.
The computer proved popular on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, reaching its goal of $50,000 in just 22 hours and 43 minutes. Those that funded the project are set to receive the first batch of MiiPCs around mid-September.
Although there’s currently no official release date, chief product officer Richard Sah told PCR that the firm has been in discussions with several interested parties about UK distribution.
The aim of MiiPC is to offer parents the chance to let their children surf the web, play games, watch media and do their homework, safe in the knowledge that they are not being exposed inappropriate content.
“We never intended MiiPC to take the place of parents,†Sah told PCR. “What we hope is that MiiPC and the monitoring features that it provides will allow parents and their children to engage in a meaningful discussion about what is appropriate and useful.â€
The device comes with an HDMI connection, runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and features a number of pre-bundled Android apps as well as access to a Web Apps Center. www.miipc.com

Following rumours that Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5S would take place on September 10th, new sources have claimed that follow-up tablets to the iPad and iPad Mini will be unveiled in October.
The devices are rumoured to launch before the end of the year. This pattern of separate events in September and October would be in keeping with Apple’s previous iPhone and iPad reveals.
Bloomberg reports the possibility of new models for Apple’s tablets is hardly new, and seems to support previous suggestions that the iPad 5 will be slimming down, adopting a bezel frame more like the iPad Mini.
It’s already been reported that the 7.9-inch iPad Mini could feature a Retina screen – read this iPad Mini 2 release date, specs, price and news round up here.
Bloomberg’s sources seem to suggest, however, that the Retina-equipped iPad Mini will be a standalone refresh of the tablet, rather than the awaited iPad Mini 2, which is rumoured instead to have been pushed back to a release in early 2014.
The new line of Apple products will feature the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS7, which was announced several months ago.
The update is arguably the most radical visual change to the native iPhone and iPad software for some time, and despite currently being only available to developers has already inspired both praise and criticism.
