Nokia has released its new Lumia 925 advert, which takes yet another dig out of the iPhone 5’s camera.
Following Samsung’s only-old-people-like-Apple Galaxy advert and Microsoft’s Siri-is-a-dumbass Surface commercial, Nokia has joined in yet again by releasing the least subtle Apple-bashing offering yet.
The ad shows the same series of photos taken with both the Lumia 925 and the iPhone 5. Obviously the Windows Phone’s pics are all lovely and Instagram ready, while Apple’s snaps are blurry, dark or out of focus.
This isn’t the first Apple-bashing Nokia has done recently, last month is released an advert, also for the Lumia 925, depicting a bunch of Apple fans who have been turned into what can only be described as ‘iZombies’ due to the iPhone 5’s dependency on its camera flash.

Having kicked off the modern tablet market single handily back in 2010 with the iPad – Apple has always accounted for the lions share of interest and sales. You hardly have to be an Apple fanboy to describe this as essentially defined by Apple, certainly in the early days.
A few years later however, Apple’s dominance in this market was being (very slightly) chipped away by rivals.
The equivalent sized and priced products, of which there are a few, never managed to tear away much from the original Apple iPad. But in 2012 a new wave of smaller tablets (with around a 7 inch screen) managed to get a bit of a foothold.
Particularly successful were the Google Nexus 7 (made by Asus) and the Amazon Kindle Fire, which as well as being small enough to take out of the house – as opposed to the bulky iPad which is more at home on your coffee table – were also a darn sight cheaper at about $/£150.
The lesson seemed to have been learned – compete with Apple in the tablet space at a similar price point to the iPad, and you might find yourself running into a brick wall.
A string of similar smaller, cheaper devices from firms like Sony and Samsung – which started releasing tablets at every conceivable size – suddenly made it look like tablets were a more competitive, vibrant market.
It also seemed to highlight a division between the larger, more expensive end still totally run by the iPad, and a newer, smaller, cheaper end of the market in which it was possible to make significant in-roads.
You might have thought Apple would be happy with this arrangement – hovering up the profits at the more expensive end of the shop. Instead, it’s response was to launch the iPad Mini and compete at the other end as well– and very well it did out of it too.
This inevitably has led to speculation as to what Apple has up its sleeve for the next iteration – which we can only logically assume will be called the iPad Mini 2.
iPad Mini 2 case
Pictures have a tendency to leak, and sometimes they can be faked. Disseminating the former from the latter is a task the tech press often finds itself concerned with.
FanaticFone unveiled a few recently – but they don’t tell much of a story. They look precisely like iPad Mini and iPad 4 cases, which considering the design apple rarely falls far from the tree (feel free to play around with your own pun here) that’s probably exactly what they’ll look like.
Though maybe a bit thinner.
iPad Mini 2 release date
Most commentators seem, if not agreed, then happy to say it’s likely, that there will be some form of new iPhone released in September – whether that’s the iPhone 6, the iPhone 5S, both, or neither.
We do know that iOS 7 will be out around that time, bolstering such rumours.
Could it be possible we’ll see a mega-launch from Apple, in which they update the iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 as well?
Well, it’s hard to say. But it doesn’t seem unlikely.
Certainly, you’d expect the iPad Mini 2 to be available by Christmas 2013.
iPad Mini specs
The biggest rumour, and certainly one you can believe, is that the iPad Mini 2 would be a Retina display – Apple’s HD screen found on the iPhone 5.
Elsewhere, a quad core processor and more RAM is suspected – but you could probably have guessed that.
iPad Mini colours
As well as speculation that Apple will make a range of iPhones in different colours, there is talk of the next iPads coming in colour options too.
You want proof? You can’t handle the proof!
Ok, there isn’t any really – but there is a speculation that you’ll be able to get the ipad Mini 2 in your choice of colours. Reams of it.
As a counter point, we’d highlight the fact Apple tends to keep it’s products to a fairly tight colour scheme – i.e. black and white.
Except the iPods, which you can get in various colours.
So, erm, could go either way that one.
iPad Mini 2 price
This is the smaller, cheaper arm of Apple’s iPad operation – so you can probably expect it to be in the £270 region at launch, as was the iPad Mini, we’d say.

When you set up your Android phone with a secure unlock mode, it often means giving up app shortcuts. You won't have to make that sacrifice if Google implements a newly granted US patent, however. The technique lets device owners complement a basic pattern unlock with multiple customizable patterns that launch specific apps, such as the camera or dialer. It's a simple concept. The question is whether or not Google will ever use it -- when Android 4.3 still relies on a conventional pattern unlock, it's clear that the company isn't in a big rush.

Bummed because your Galaxy S4 Active didn't hold up as advertised while you were swimming laps? Well, it seems like Samsung and AT&T may be offering a solution: a chance to exchange those water-logged handsets. Thanks to a tipster, Phone Arena has learned that the swap will take place, but only for handsets purchased directly from the carrier or its retail shops. That's right, even if the smartphone in question's Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) has turned positive, it's still covered. Those who have suffered physical damage, though, will still be forced to consult the usual channels for a replacement. We've reached out to AT&T for confirmation and we'll be sure to update here once we catch a reply.
Update: AT&T has confirmed to us that the exchange program exists, but we're still awaiting details on how exactly consumers will be able to make the swap.

It seems like Apple just rolled out its iOS 7 beta 4 -- and its bevy of bug fixes -- to developers, but Cupertino is already seeding the next build. The iOS 7 beta 5 is available as an OTA download via Software Update, and we imagine it will bring even more performance tweaks this time around. Registered devs can hit up the source link to learn more, while the rest of us will have to be content with knowing the mobile OS must be getting pretty close to a public release.

Say what you will about Microsoft's ecosystem struggles, but no one can fault it for trying. In an effort to get more developers to give Windows Phone 8 more than a passing glance, the outfit has just launched a beta version of Windows Phone App Studio -- a web-based dev environment that's "designed to help anyone quickly bring an idea to life by applying text, web content, imagery, and design concepts to any one of a rich set of customizable templates." Moreover, Microsoft is now allowing any dev to unlock and register a single phone to use with up to two apps, and it's also offering a $19 "Summer Break" Dev Center registration offer for those looking to actually publish software to the store. Finally, a new "Click To Chat" support program is being instituted to help those who can't quite seem to overcome a programming hurdle. Take a look at the company's blog post for the full skinny.

Got an itchy update trigger finger? If so, your Windows Phone is patiently awaiting.Skype for WP8 just been refreshed to version 2.9, which offers up a couple UI enhancements that should be pretty useful. First, you'll now be able to filter your People list so that you can choose to view only Skype contacts if you prefer; there's also a new contact layout within the app that lets you see more people on one screen. On top of this, you'll also benefit from the obligatory bug fixes and speed improvements -- after all, who doesn't love fewer bugs and getting things done faster? If you do, head straight for the Store and get up to date.

Six million Britons play smartphone games every day according to new research from ComScore.
In addition a total of 20m play games every month. That places gaming ahead of instant messaging in the most popular mobile activities race and approximately on par with photo messaging, reading the news or weather and just behind social media (22.3m).
The report adds that 64 per cent of mobile gaming takes place in the home with 33 per cent happening while commuting. The split between men and women is more or less even – 51 per cent and 49 per cent respectively, with 24 per cent being aged between 25-34.
6.8m download free games every month with Android claiming 48 per cent and iOS 40 per cent. Interestingly, only 28 per cent of the 1.3m gamers who purchase games each month do so on Android with iOS claiming 55 per cent. In a new Gizmodo column, Andreas Goeldi calls it the 'frosted glass' effect: when a prominent tech company's latest upgrade to its flagship operating system features frosted-glass highlights as its primary innovation, you know that company is facing a period of severe stagnation. That's what happened to Microsoft around the time of Windows Vista, Goeldi wrote, and Apple's going down the same road with iOS 7. In light of what he views as Apple's sclerosis, it wasn't difficult for him to abandon his iPhone in favor of a Google Android ecosystem. But is Apple really becoming the next Microsoft? In short: no. Apple seems to recognize everything that seemed to elude Microsoft's corporate thinking six years ago: namely, that even the most successful companies need to keep breaking into new categories, and keep innovating, if they want to stay ahead of hungry rivals. Rumors have persisted for quite some time that Apple is prepping big pushes into wearable electronics and televisions, both of which could prove lucrative strategies if executed correctly. Goeldi faults iOS 7 for its frosted-glass effects, which he compares to those of Vista; but similar graphical elements aside, it's unlikely that iOS 7 will run into the same complaints over hardware requirements, compatibility, security, and so much more that greeted Vista upon its release. In fact, iOS 7 isn't even finished.

Half of our phones smeared with photos we wouldn't want seen.
It has to be admitted that at one point or another our devices have contained at least one little snap that would cause the world to end if anyone was to see it.
In fact 55 per cent of Brits in total have said that their mobiles contain filthy selfies, and 48 per cent have rude pics of someone else, according to Mobile Entertainments previous app of the day Appysnap.
The survey has also revealed that only a third of the 18-35's asked, password protect their handsets, potentially putting their personal or possibly smutty pictures at risk of prying eyes.
52 per cent of the 1,928 people asked who said that they had some form of photo they'd like to keep private, 39 per cent had vain selfies - most likely with the dreaded duck face - 21 per cent had snapped a soppy or romantic image and 16 per cent contained embarrassing drunken photos - a little advice for them, what is forgotten should probably stay forgotten!
The majority of people who had taken rude or sexual photos were from Liverpool with 16 per cent (next holiday destination?), followed by Newcastle with 13 per cent and Bristol at 11 per cent.
Paul Smith, co-founder of Appysnap, said: "Anyone with raunchy images in their gallery should perhaps check their smartphone settings, to ensure they've got a password or PIN on there. Worst case scenario, you could accidentally end up posting these images on social media and that would be a disaster."
What with all the anti-porn vibes from Facebook these days, any sexy-snaps probably wouldn't last long on there - however another risk is sending a personal pic to the wrong person, which 9 per cent of Brits confessed to doing.
'Hi, Nan? Thanks for the cookies. One thing, Ignore that last message please!'

Voice functions of smartphones threatened by text based communications.
Smartphone penetration in Australia this year has been estimated at around 73 per cent (three-quarters) in the 15 - 65 age group, according to Frost and Sullivan.
It is also predicted to grow to around 93 per cent by 2018 when all mobile phones will potentially have smartphone capabilities.
Almost half of all Australian smartphone owners have said that they use mobile media as the main use of their device, however tablets are expected to over take the market in sales growth by 2018, increasing from 49 per cent this year to 80 per cent.
With the rapid improvements of smartphone functionality, it still remains the device of choice.
Phil Harpur, senior research manager for Australia and New Zealand at Frost and Sullivan, said: "As smartphone functionality continues to improve with higher resolutions and larger screens, faster internet access via 4G networks and higher data downloads, this percentage will increase significantly over the next few years."
With the increase in popularity of apps such as WhatsApp and other text based communications, the voice function of smartphones is said to become less important to owners.
The initial purpose of a phone is also being threatened by the undying social media craze, mobile job searching - such as the new LinkedIn feature which allows users to apply for jobs straight from their phone - and holiday booking, with one in five booking via a mobile.
This activities are also becoming more apparent on laptops and PC's - which were previously thought to be a dying breed - with 60 per cent of consumers accessing sites via this platform at least once every six weeks.

The slow rebuild follows a 'security intrusion' which affected a number of services.
The next few weeks should see the restoration of a number of downed Apple services which have been unavailable for some time.
The tools affected include subscription sign-ups and renewals as well as annual paid developer programs - all of which have been unavailable since 18th July.
In an email sent to developers, Apple said: "We plan to reinstate most of the remaining services this week - Xcode automatic configuration as well as access to license agreements, TSI's, program enrollments, and renewals and Member Centre."
The developer site was initially attacked in what Apple said was a security intrusion, by an unnamed individual or group who managed to gain access to some developer details. Apple has also said that no customer information was put at risk as it is securely encrypted.
Many key services began returning on 26th July, over a week of inactive downtime. The early revivers were iOS, Mac and Safari development tools as well as downloads for later updates for Apple's desktop and mobile software.

Worldwide tablet shipment growth slowed in Q2 2013, with year-on-year sales growth of the Apple iPad falling 14 per cent.
According to International Data Corporation's (IDC)Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, tablet shipments "finally" experienced a sequential decline as total volumes fell 9.7 per cent from Q1 2013.
However, the 45.1 million units shipped in Q2 were up 59.6 per cent from the same quarter in 2012, when tablet vendors shipped 28.3 million devices.
The news comes as fresh research from Forrester suggests that one in eight people will own a tablet device by 2017 (60 per cent of US citizens and 42 per cent of Europeans). This equates to 905 million tablet users globally.
Apple's iPad saw a lower-than-predicted shipment total of 14.6 million units for the quarter, down from 19.5 million in Q1 2013.
In years past, Apple has launched a new tablet heading into the second quarter, but this year it's expected to launch a new tablet product in the second half of the year.
"A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally that has helped both Apple and its competitors," said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets at IDC. "With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that's likely to continue into the third quarter.
"However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon, and others to drive impressive growth in the market."
Ryan Reith, Program Manager for IDC's Mobility Tracker programs, added: "The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result.
"Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market."

Samsung is gearing up to launch a flip-style smartphone featuring two 3.7-inch touchscreens.
DigiTimes reports that, according to unnamed Taiwan-based supply chain makers, the phone will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.7GHz quad core processor.
The sources claim that the smartphone is aimed at the South Korea and China markets, but what with Samsung’s habit of releasing an incredible amount of smartphone variations, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see the Galaxy Flip sometime soon.
Last month, a concept video from Samsung was leaked showing that the firm is continuing to work towards foldable smartphones.
Maybe a flip-phone with two screens is the first step towards a smartphone that can fold out into a full-sized tablet…
