Microsoft not ruled out as bidder even after Nokia acquisition.
BlackBerry has set up a committee to look at alternative strategies for its future, including the possible sale of the company by the end of the year, reports the Wall Street Journal.
A bidding war will take place between a number of private equity groups if the sale is to happen.
Microsoft may also get in on the action even after its $7.2 billion deal for Nokia’s mobile business.
If they do manage to take on the BB devices, then it will give the company a huge advantage in the smartphone market, where it has previously struggled to stay relevant.
Numerous alternatives for the future of the business are to be considered including the sale of its handset manufacturing side, meaning the firm will become more software focused.
The company recently experienced a loss of $84 million despite a 13 per cent increase in device shipments – just one of many struggles it has faced this year.
If its sales weren’t already damaged enough, the open review of its future could further impact performance in corporate, enterprise and customer based areas of its business.

Considered a companion device that bridges the gap between a mobile and a fashion accessory.
The long awaited Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch has finally been unveiled in Berlin.
The device has all the features previously expected, including a 1.63 inch screen, a 1.9 megapixel camera, microphones, speakers and an 800MHz processor.
Not the most powerful gadget going, but what did we expect from what is – at the end of the day - a watch?
The ‘watch’ - which looks like it could have come out of James Bond’s armory – can be paired to a smartphone and picks up notifications such as calls, texts, emails and social media alerts.
To accept a call, all the user has to do is raise their wrist to their ear and chat through the microphone and speaker in the strap.
From what we have seen this looks a bit silly to say the least. If we were to walk down the street with our arm glued to the side of our head talking supposedly to our elbow, we wouldn’t hold it against anyone if they gave us a funny look!
On its own it is pretty useless, hence it has been called a companion device meaning that rather than being a standalone tech innovation, it actually acts to improve the functionality of another device.
Similar watches have risen, and sunk back into the depths of ‘is-this-worth-it’ with Apple stalling the production of its iWatch due to apparent engineering problems – or was it that it just had better things to think about?
JK Shin, president of IT and mobile division at Samsung, said: “Samsung Galaxy Gear benefits consumers by integrating smart device technology even deeper in their everyday lives, and bridges the gap between the mobile device and fashion worlds to create truly wearable technology.â€
Earlier this year the Androidly smartwatch was released by a bunch of techie teens, however it appears to have petered out and all but vanished. Possibly due to the lack of a big name being involved in its production.
Whether the smartwatch catches on or not, only time will tell, literally.
Samsung has taken the first step, and seem to be acting as the guinea pig for other manufacturers to see if a branded device will set the clock ticking for the competition, or if time will literally stand still in the new smart device market.

September 5th, 2013, 16:00 Posted By: wraggster
Tuesday would have been a great day to be a mobile CEO caught embezzling and shagging the CFO's wife.
No one would have noticed. They would all have been poring over the implications of the Microsoft/Nokia deal.
And maybe the launch of the HTC Desire 601.
No, on reflection, just the Microsoft/Nokia deal.
For those of us left hollow by the concluding of the football transfer window, this news was heaven.
We all delighted at the thought of Stephen Elop performing keepy-uppies in front of cheering Microsoft bloggers. And we waited to see whether the signing would spark a bid from Arsenal for Timo Toikkanen.
Anyhow, you've probably read loads about it.
I know I have.
And so here, two days on, are my 14 thoughts on the whole thing in no particular order.
Feel free to use them to seduce potential mates at your next speed dating evening.
1. Microsoft paid more for Skype than for Nokia
Ah, the topsy turvy logic of old media v new media. Microsoft paid $8.5bn for Skype at a time when it had revenues of $860m for the year ($1.30 per user per year). It paid $7.2bn for Nokia. Yes, Nokia is ailing. But its device sales were worth 15bn euros in 2012.
2. Nokia paid more for Navteq than Microsoft paid for Nokia
Navteq cost $8.1 billion in 2007. But its maps are very good, which leads on to…
3. New Nokia can now start selling stuff to Apple
Apple's maps sometimes tell you Luton is in the sea. Nokia's 'Here' division is widely loved. Now, the new Nokia can do business with Apple instead of trying to emulate its phones.
4. Danger, Kin...Microsoft has a terrible record in handsets
This is not the first phone company Microsoft has bought. It snapped up Danger (maker of the Hiptop/Sidekick) in 2008m and what happened to that? Not much. But what was left of Danger made the Kin – one of the most disastrous phone launches in history: it lasted 42 days before being canned.
5. Did Steve Ballmer want Nokia or not?
We probably won't know till the memoir 'I Loved That Company' comes out. But did Steve do the deal as a final flourish before quitting or quit because he didn't like it?
6. Was Elop a secret agent?
The conspiracy theorists love this. Elop was parachuted in to Nokia to cripple it so Microsoft could buy up the ruins for peanuts. I doubt it. Who would purposely de-value a business they'd want to own?
7. What happened to software being the future? Microsoft is all over hardware...
Ironic isn't it? MS built its evil empire on software – making all the money and delivering all the value in a PC purchase while Dell et al shifted boxes at tiny margins. Now, Microsoft makes Xbox, smartphones, Surface tablets…
8. Will Nokia be the only Windows Phone OEM?
Probably. Can't see why the others would continue to support WP after their contracts expire.
9. What if Nokia had gone with Android?
Imagine. Nokia's strength was always solid handset builds and global distribution. If it had allied all this to a solid Android implementation, it could be Samsung by now.
10. What happens to Asha?
No one knows for sure. Asha has been pretty successful in taking low-end smartphones to India in particular. But can it see off the challenge of Android, Firefox and nimble OEMs like Micromax?
And would MS rather bin it and do low end WinPho devices?
The PR says: "This element provides Microsoft with the opportunity to extend its service offerings to a far wider group around the world while allowing Nokia’s mobile phones to serve as an on-ramp to Windows Phone."
Inconclusive.
11. Europe is not a mobile OEM desert. We still have Alcatel!
Lots of pundits have written eulogies to Europe's phone making industry. No more Nokia. No more Ericsson. And tragically no more Sendo. So it's up to Alcatel to shove it up Apple and Samsung.
12. Did Nokia's board threaten to go with Android?
The Windows thing was not going as planned. Was it possible Microsoft paid $7bn to stop Nokia defecting to the enemy?
13. Will operator hatred of Skype kill Windows Phone?
You need operators, their subsidies and their high street shops, if you want to sell phones.
Yes, the OTTs now set the pace in mobile. But those dumb pipes still control distribution for the most part.
Don't forget Google failed when it tried to sell phones direct.
And operators still fear Skype. WinPho is struggling. The Skype connection won't make things any easier.
14. WinPho is doomed
Well, I have to place a bet. I've seen so many quotes from analysts this week saying 'on the one hand this deal is great, on the other it might not be.'
The facts are these: there may be 20-30m Windows Phones in use, but there are 250m iPhones and over 900m Android phones.
Don't get me wrong. I've used Lumias and they're good.
But WP will probably not be backed by other OEMs and Microsoft has a terrible track record in hardware. The platform lacks support from developers and from operators.
These are huge challenges. The only way to overcome them is with a fearsomely charismatic leader and a wonderfully creative design team.
I just don't see that MS has either.

The technology, detailed in a patent awarded to Apple on Tuesday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, deals with so-called 'access inputs' that determine what apps, device services, and functions can be accessed by a user. Apple's U.S. Patent No. 8,528,072 for a 'Method, apparatus and system for access mode control of a device,' describes a system that creates user access modes guarded by predetermined gesture inputs."Reading the patent, it appears Apple managed to patent allowing access to some programs without a passcode from the lock screen of a device while protecting others, so e.g. you can quickly swipe to make a phone call or control your music, but have to enter a code to read your email or access your word processor documents.

Next generation of smartphones from iOS giant set for unveiling
Apple has confirmed a major press briefing for September 10th, rumored to be the unveiling of the iPhone 5S.
The rumor began circulating yesterday that the company would reveal its new smartphone in a week and The Verge has now confirmed it will be attending the event it claims will debut the newest iPhone.
The iPhone 5S isn't the only piece of hardware rumored to be coming this year, and some claim that an entirely new line of hardware dubbed the iPhone 5C will make an appearance.
Leaks claim the 5S has a 12 or 13 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, a fingerprint sensor, and a gold-colored variant.
The 5C on the other hand is said to be a plastic version offered as the low-cost option for iPhone buyers, with the added bonus of being available in a wider variety of colors.

Google's OS continues to prove popular on mobile
More than one billion Android devices have been activated to date, Google has revealed.
The impressive figure comes after it was revealed the number of downloads on Google Play had eclipsed those on the App Store during the last quarter.
App Annie claimed that countries such as India, Russia and Brazil were helping to drive the increase in downloads on Android devices.
In September last year, it was revealed that Google Play had surpassed 25 billion app downloads.
It’s main OS rival in the mobile space, Apple’s iOS however, has seen 50 billion downloads to date from the App Store. This amounts to approximately 800 downloads per second.

Virgin Media has introduced the ZTE Blade V into the UK market, priced at £71.99.
The four-inch smartphone is said to be one of the most powerful in the price range compared to predecessors and competitors.
The device has a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm chip-set, 1GB processing memory and 4GB of storage packed into its tiny body.
A number of Android applications are available for the platform and it benefits from the Kingsoft Office suite being pre-embedded in the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.
To top it off, the phone has a 5MP camera with auto-focus as well as a panoramic shooting mode.
Kalam Meah, account director at ZTE UK, said: “We strongly believe smartphone technology should be accessible to everyone, and taking on board feedback from our customers, the Blade V is designed to deliver a richer multi-media experience at a more affordable price point than ever before.â€
The cheaper mobile market is rapidly becoming an essential sector in the smartphone world –Android have already flooded it with an array of lower priced devices, and Nokia have jumped on the band wagon with its Lumia 625.
Emerging markets are crying out for a larger selection of affordable smartphones, as countries such as China and India take over the number of device shipments.
The Blade V, exclusive to Virgin Media is available from today in-store, and will be available online soon. Virgin Media customers can get a 20 per cent discount on the retail price if they purchase the handset from a Virgin Media store.

Google has entered into a partnership agreement with confectionery firm Nestlé for the name of its next operating system: Android Kitkat.
Iterations of Android have been using sweet-themed names since the initial release of Android Cupcake in 2009 and continuing in alphabetical order until the most recent version, Android Jelly Bean.
It was previously rumoured that the latest Android 4.4 OS would be known as Android Key Lime Pie.
To mark the release of Android KitKat, more than 50 million specially branded KitKat bars will be available in 19 countries including the UK and US. The packs will lead consumers toandroid.com/kitkat where they will have the opportunity to win prizes including Google Nexus 7 tablets.
Limited Android robot-shaped KitKat bars will also be offered as prizes in selected markets.
"We couldn't imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that's been a favourite among the team since the early days of Android," said Marc Vanlerberghe, Director of Android Marketing.
Patrice Bula, Nestle's Head of Marketing, added: "We're excited to announce this partnership with Android, the world's most popular mobile platform, which will help us to enable even more KitKat fans to enjoy their break."
Android powers more than one billion smartphones and tablets.
"Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean," said Google in a statement.
"As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kitkat."

Apple didn’t invent tablet computers when it launched theiPad in 2010 – but it did instantly make them popular devices, something which you couldn’t really describe them as before.
In fact the name iPad, laughed at to begin with for sounding like some kind of toiletry, is now more or less synonymous with tablets – much like iPod became to MP3 players.
Subsequent releases have stuck with the same basic design – it is after all a slab of metal with a touchscreen on one side.
There have been specification improvements with each iteration of course – and a number have been speculated on for the next model, what we can only reasonably presume will be called the iPad 5.
iPad 5 release date
iPad release dates are somewhat more erratic than iPhone ones – but you can more or less expect a new one once a year.
The iPad 4 was announced in October 2012 so we’ll more or less be due one by the time iOS7 is released in September, which is also when the next iPhone 6 or iPhone 5sis expected.
An Apple launch event has been confirmed for September 10th.
The iPhone 5S is expected to be the main reveal – since Apple will be due to launch a new flagship device then.
The colourful invitation comes with the tagline ‘this should brighten everyone’s day’ – which most have inferred means we’ll see a colourful model, maybe called the iPhone 5C unveiled as well. There could also be an iPad launch.
The event kicks off at 10am PT (US) and 6 pm (UK). Keep you’re dials tunes to PCR for all the news as it breaks.
iPad 5 specs
Android/Samsung/other phone firm fanboys have often lambasted Apple for not having NFC. The iPad 5 is rumoured to have it, however.
The tech allows you to transfer data between two devices by tapping them together. If it is to appear on the iPad 5, you’d expect it to swiftly appear on the latest versions of the iPhone and iPad Mini as well.
In terms of processor and storage sizes – probably you can expect a slightly more powerful former and not much change on the latter (there hasn’t been giant leaps in hard drive tech since the iPad 4, so 16GB, 32GB and 64GB seem likely).
You can certainly find more specific predictions on the web, but it seems fairly arbitrary to make them in a total information vacuum.
It’s more or less expected the iPad 5 will be a bit thinner and lighter than the iPad 4 – which makes sense. But it’s worth noting the iPad 4 was a tad porkier than the iPad 3.
According to some, perhaps questionable, photos the case will also be more ‘angular’, ditching the rounded corners we’ve seen previously.
Other pictures seem to imply an aluminium rear shell, and an apparently more svelte design.
There are also rumours the iPad 5 will have film-based panels, which are thinner and lighter, as seen on the iPad Mini.
iPad 5 iOS7
With iOS7 set for a September release, you can be about as certain as you can with anything to do with Apple that it will feature on the iPad 5.
The new operating system has been revamped by Johnny Ive – Apple’s design guru who helped mastermind a lot of the look of Apple’s hardware.
A lot of it will be a spruce up of the way it looks, but there are also new features expected such as an updated Siri.
iPad 5 inductive charging case?
Inductive charging smart covers could appear with the iPad 5 – according to this patent, which is a flip case armed with the wireless charging tech.
It’s unclear how such a thing would be used – whether it’s to charge the iPad itself from its stores (presumably you could charge both case and iPad and enjoy extra long battery life for a plane journey or what have you).
It could also be for popping an iPhone on, to charge your smaller gadgets from your larger.
Or both. Or neither.

Panasonic is is stepping back from the consumer smartphone market to focus on products for businesses only.
It will pull out of the smartphone market entirely in Japan and use outsourced production in emerging markets such as India, reports Reuters.
Panasonic's mobile arm posted an 8.1 billion yen loss last year, and says it will lose more than the 1.1 billion yen estimated for its next financial year ending March 2014.
In light of this, it is now transforming from a consumer tech manufacturer to a B2B supplier, and will focus on supplying smartphones for businesses, in a similar way to its Toughbook PC laptop products.
Panasonic will use its brand to sell phones made by other manufacturers, like it already does in India.
Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga said he would "weed out" any division that fails to meet a five per cent operating margin goal within three years.
"It's not acceptable for the company to be bleeding red ink like this, so we have to think about ways to develop assets that we do have in a more effective direction," he said.
Panasonic has struggled to compete with the likes of Apple and Google smartphones in recent years. In 2001, it was the second-largest handset maker in Japan, after NEC, with more than 19 per cent of the market. Last year, it had a seven per cent share, behind Apple's 25 per cent lead.

"Z1 is at the heart of Sony's hardware ecosystem and will have an imaging experience you'll find only in a Sony smartphone.
"We hope the product moves you in powerful and relevant ways, and we couldn't be more excited about [launching it into] the European market."

BlackBerry Messenger's trip to iOS and Android is taking longer than we hoped, but when walkthrough videos are starting to leak out, it's a good sign that you're on thefinal stretch. Courtesy of JT and BlackBerryOS, we've now got an early peek of what it'll look like when the app eventually lands. Combining BBM's rigorous chat app with our favorite Android keyboards sounds mighty tempting and it appears the app follows the bezel-swiping navigation of the BlackBerry 10 OS to get to your chat threads and groups. The video walkthrough (included after the break) also touches on the ability to transfer contacts through NFC, which is good sign that the messaging app will make the most of these the new mobile OSes.

Microsoft's outlined its reasoning behind why it's gone deep into smartphones in a lengthy presentation file. Alongside cheering Windows Phone's current growth (No.3!), it's reaffirmed that it'll bring its products and services to rival mobile OSes, still involving itself with "iPhone and Android/Galaxy phones." However, it tempers this point, adding that the Redmond company can't risk "having Google or Apple foreclose app innovation, integration, distribution or economics." Given the strength of the top two, Microsoft is telling it straight, adding that it needs a "first-rate Microsoft phone experience for users" to compete, suggesting that its portfolio of devices isn't quite there yet. The slides also outline the purchase of Nokia's patent collection, one which Microsoft believes is one of the most valuable in the tech sector. MS also thinks that the acquisition will speed up innovation within Windows Phone and protect its future. So, some high hopes for the purchase.
Update: According to slides in the source, Microsoft also has more concrete goals for its Nokia devices acquisition. It'd like to boost its smartphone share to 15 percent by 2018, around four times what it has now, depending on which numbers you believe. Redmond also revealed that it makes less than $10 per handset in its current arrangement with Nokia, and thinks it can make over $40 going forward, while saving $600 million in costs. With all that, Microsoft is projecting $45 billion extra in revenue by 2018, with profits in the $2.3-4.5 billion range. High hopes indeed.

Much like how Google bought Motorola Mobility, Microsoft's surprising acquisition of Nokia's devices and services business -- which is expected to be approved by early 2014 -- is no indication that it will cut off ties with other partners in its own little ecosystem. This is emphasized by Terry Myerson, EVP, Operating Systems, on the official Windows blog.
"Acquiring Nokia's Devices group will help make the market for all Windows Phones, from Microsoft or our OEM partners," said the exec. "We collaborate with our Microsoft hardware teams in the same way we partner with our external hardware partners... We look forward to building new products together that will provide valuable business opportunity for the ecosystem and enable OEMs."
In other words, Microsoft will -- surprise, surprise -- continue to license Windows Phone to other OEMs. Despite this reassurance, we highly doubt the handful of partners left are feeling totally comfortable about the situation.

Logitech is giving its Android tablet accessory line a welcome boost today by launching versions of its Ultrathin Keyboard Folio and Folio Protective Case for Samsung'sGalaxy Tab 3 range. Both protectors are largely on par with their iPad counterparts, although there's varying levels of compatibility. The Ultrathin Keyboard Folio (shown above) is built solely for the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, and centers on a Bluetooth keyboard that turns the tablet into a makeshift laptop. The Folio Protective Case (pictured after the break) drops the keyboard, but it's available for all three Galaxy Tab models. You'll find both cases in stores this October. The Folio Protective Case will cost $50 regardless of tablet size, while the Ultrathin Keyboard Folio will sell for $100.

If you were still holding out before committing funds for a Nexus 4, seems like you missed your chance at the 8GB version. The $200 handset has sold out at Google Play in the US and the folks in Mountain View tell The Verge that it's not coming back. Those still eyeing the device can splurge for the 16GB option, while 8GB phones remain available in other global locales until the current stock is depleted. This certainly begs the question: is a new Nexus device on the way? With the Nexus 4 quickly approaching the year-old mark in October and a new version of Android on the horizon, this couldbe a signal that the new Nexus is just around the bend. We've reached out to Google on the matter and we'll update here as soon as we hear back.
