Apple has just laid claim to a world first: 64-bit processing inside a real, ready-for-sale smartphone. The new A7 processor will power the iPhone 5s with a "desktop-class architecture" consisting of over 1 billion transistors. That's twice as many transistors as were squeezed into the A6 and, for the sake of context, it's not a million miles away from the 1.4 billion transistors found in a current Intel Ivy Bridge desktop-class PC chip. In other words, while ARM's own 64-bit mobile chip design, the Cortex-A57, is still being developed by chip- and phone-makers, Apple's in-house team has pipped them all to the post.
Largely as a result of the extra transistors and 64-bit architecture, the A7 is claimed to be twice as fast as its predecessor, both in terms of CPU and graphics performance. Speaking of graphics, Apple also promises that its newly added support for the OpenGL ES 3.0 standard will enable "breakthroughs in performance" for visually intensive games such as Infinity Blade III. And it won't just be games that benefit -- iOS 7 will be 64-bit too, naturally, and Apple's own built-in apps will be "re-engineered" to exploit this next-gen processing capability. (The A7 and iPhone 5s will also be backwards compatible with existing 32-bit apps.)
Finally, it's interesting note that the iPhone 5s has a secondary processor, the Apple M7, which is tailored for processing motion and other sensory inputs and is presumably designed for unburdening the main chip and allowing the iPhone 5s to work as a fitness tracker and accomplish other sensory-based tasks without excessive battery drain.

September 11th, 2013, 01:07 Posted By: wraggster
Apple's new flagship iPhone 5s is about to have much more detailed information about how much its users are moving, thanks to a new M7 "Motion co-processor." Unveiled during today's live event, it works along with the new 64-bit A7 CPU to measure motion data continuously from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass without draining the battery as heavily. It looks like the iPhone 5s will be ready to take over for hardware extras like the FitBit or Nike Fuel wristband, but with a new CoreMotion API, devs for those companies and others can pull the information into their apps. The CoreMotion API specifically works to identify user movement, and offers "optimizations based on contextual awareness." Overall, it's very similar to what we'd heard would be in the Moto X, although we haven't seen all of these extra sensors used for activity tracking quite in this way. Nike was on hand with a new Nike+ Move app that used the M7 and GPS to track users' activities, and we wouldn't be surprised if others follow closely behind. Nike called the Move app an "introductory experience" to Nike Fuel in a tweet, so maybe it's planning to upsell customers on (potentially?) more detailed tracking with its hardware add-ons afterward.

Now that Apple's announced the new iPhone 5s, it's taking some time to detail the camera, which, as you'd expect, has been upgraded for 2013. The new module includes a five-element, Apple-designed lens with f/2.2 aperture and -- this is important -- a 15 percent larger active sensor area to help cut down on noise. Also, as rumored, Apple is adding high-speed, 120fps video recording so you can make slow-motion videos (in 720p only, it looks like). One rumor that wasn't true: the one about optical image stabilization. Yes, Apple says there's image stabilization here, but it appears to be just the digital kind. Hope we haven't disappointed you too much.
Additionally, the camera allows for burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second -- just make sure you're holding down the shutter button. Wrapping up, other features include autofocus matrix metering, with the ability to let the camera automatically pick the sharpest shot. There's also automatic exposure adjustment in panorama mode and a new flash called True Tone. Marketing speak aside, the flash is comprised of 1,000 unique variations in flash tone to reduce clashing color temperatures. Curiously, despite going into good detail about the camera, Apple didn't mention the resolution of the camera -- normally a headline spec -- so we're wondering if it's still capped at eight megapixels.

Apple's brand-new iPhone 5s isn't dramatically different from last year's model, but it has at least one major addition: a "Touch ID" sensor. Us human beings are calling it a fingerprint sensor, and it's built into the phone's main Home button below the screen. Apple's Phil Schiller says, "It reads your fingerprint at an entirely new level" -- it's 170 microns in thickness with 500 ppi resolution. According to Cupertino, it "scans sub-epidermal skin layers," and can read 360 degrees. As expected, the sensor is actually part of the Home button, making it less of a button and more of a...well, sensor. Using Touch ID, users can authorize purchases in iTunes, the App Store, or in iBooks by simply using their thumbprint (starting in iOS 7, of course). Pretty neat / scary!
As rumored, the sensor uses a laser cut sapphire crystal cover; it retains a tactile input for those wary of the sensor wearing down after lengthy use. The sapphire crystal, acting as a lens, takes a highly detailed image of your fingerprint, which Apple says is "never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud." According to Apple's official PR on the new phone, Touch ID's fingerprint info is "encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip" (the A7 chip is the new processor at the heart of the 5s). Apple hasn't made clear whether Touch ID allows for multiple users on a single iPhone or not, nor has the company said whether you could turn off fingerprint authentication (though we have to presume the answer is yes given previous authentication standards on the iPhone).
The fingerprint ID technology was long rumored as heading to 2013's iPhone followingApple's acquisition of Authentec last summer. A render of the iPhone 5s outed the new functionality's name just this week. We'll have more on Touch ID in our upcoming hands-on live from Cupertino, and you can find all our Apple event coverage from today right here.

Just yesterday, the venerable iPhone 4S sat as Apple's mid-tier smartphone, but now it's moving into a new role as the company's go-to option for budget seekers: an 8GB iPhone 4S is now free on-contract. The news follows this morning's introduction of theiPhone 5c ($99), which brings a dash of color to Apple's mid-range and replaces the iPhone 5. A similar discount is also in effect for the unlocked iPhone 4S, which now sells for $450 outright for the new 8GB model. Alongside the price drop, the continuation of the iPhone 4S brings a reprieve for Apple's legacy 30-pin dock connector, which is an important consideration for compatibility-minded folks. Naturally, you won't find all the latest goodies -- or even LTE -- in this 2-year old smartphone, but living behind the curve sure is easier on the wallet.

The general public has to wait until September 18th to get their hands on the final, non-beta version of iOS 7, but developers can get look at what's in store for that release starting today. Apple has just released the final version, or golden master, of iOS 7 though the usual dev channels. Expectedly, it's compatible with the iPhone 4 and later, as well as the iPad mini, iPad 2 and up, and the 5th-generation iPod touch.

So, you know fancy new fingerprint reading home button Apple showed off for theiPhone 5s at today's event? The company demonstrated functionality for unlocking and buying stuff through iTunes. Cool, but what about third-party apps? We can imagine all sorts of neat uses not limited to buying stuff. For the time being, however, the authentication functionality is off-limits. Apple exec Phil Schiller told All Things D that the hardware won't be opened to developers initially. As to whether that functionality will be arriving in the future, Apple's not ready to say just yet.

New smartphone billed at double the speed of predecessor; iPhone 5C brings lower cost colorful plastic line
[h=3]Apple[/h]Established in 1976, Apple is a multinational corporation (corporate headquarters based in California)...
apple.com
As expected, Apple today unveiled two new iterations of the iPhone 5 in a media briefing at its Cupertino, California headquarters. As reported by The Verge, the lower-cost iPhone 5C features colorful plastic cases and a better front-facing camera, while the iPhone 5S will be powered by the A7 CPU, the first-ever 64-bit chip in a smartphone.
The new CPU is the most notable iPhone 5S improvement over the original iPhone 5, but Apple has incorporated a number of other tweaks. As rumored, the phone will feature a fingerprint-reading home button for security purposes. The company is also packing in a "motion coprocessor" called the M7 specifically to monitor the device's accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope. The intent is that apps should be able to access this information to tell if you're walking, driving, or sitting still, and Nike has already embraced it with a Nike+ Move app.
The event also saw the unveiling of Chair Entertainment's Infinity Blade III running on the iPhone 5S. Chair's Donald Mustard appeared on stage to introduce the game and tout the 5S' OpenGL ES 3.0 support. The game will launch alongside the iPhone 5S' retail debut.
Both phones will go up for preorder this Friday, September 13, with the devices launching in nine countries on September 20. This will be the first time China has been included in the initial round of countries to receive a new iPhone model. By the end of the year, Apple expects to have its new iPhones in 100 countries and on 270 carriers.
The iPhone 5S will start at $199 for a 16GB model, while the iPhone 5C in green, white, blue, pink, or yellow will sell for $99 for a 16GB model. The iPhone 5 is being discontinued, but the 8GB iPhone 4S will continue to be offered for free. All of the previous prices are contingent on a new two-year service contract.
In other Apple news, the iOS7 operating system on which the new phones will run is set to debut Septebmer 18. Apple also revealed that it will ship its 700 millionth iOS device next month.

Ubisoft has announced two new smartphone games based on a pair of its biggest IPs – Assassin’s Creed and Rayman.
Assassin's Creed: Pirates is focused on naval combat, thematically tying in with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, although it is very much separate to that game’s previously announced companion app.
It features 20 square km of explorable oceans with players being able to upgrade their ships, hunt for treasure and the like.
Rayman Fiesta Run, meanwhile, hopes to continue the success of the fantastic Rayman Jungle Run. It’s once again built on the UbiArt Framework engine so should look fantastic.

Activision has topped the iPad chart with mobile Call of Duty entry, Strike Team.
The publisher made no mention of the British-developed Strike Force following its arrival on the iOS app store last week. But the game has certainly made a splash amongst mobile gamers during its first week on sale.
Strike Force topped Apple's iPad chart ending September 8th, whilst also placing fourth on the iPhone chart.
Priced at £4.99, the game is one of the more expensive title available on the store and also features micro-transactions, but that hasn't deterred gamers from trying out the latest CoD title on mobile.

A fresh low-priced iPhone 5C model has been revealed by Apple's senior marketing VP Phil Schiller today (September 10th).
Following months of rumours, Schiller announced the iPhone 5C, which comes in a range of colours – green, white, blue, red and yellow. There are also six separate coloured cases available, with users encouraged to mix and match phone and case colours to customise their device.
Referencing the rumours, Schiller said: "A few of you might have seen some shots on the web. And that's cool, because everyone is really excited about this."
"You won't see seams, or part lines, or joins. The entire back and sides are made from a single part," he added.
The material of the 5C is "hard-coated polycarbonate" reinforced with interior steel, with Apple releasing custom plastic cases which have circular cut-outs in order to reveal the brightly coloured back of the phone.
The screen is a four-inch Retina display, much like the existing iPhone 5.
Another similarity the 5C shares with the current iPhone 5 is the presence of Apple's A6 processor, as well as a rear 8-megapixel camera.
The battery is slightly larger than the iPhone 5. Also improved from the iPhone 5 is the front-facing camera, which is the new 'FaceTime HD' camera.
Schiller said the iPhone 5C will support more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world. The phone's connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
No off-contract options for the iPhone 5C were announced, with Schiller revealing the prices to be $99 (£63) for 16GB and $199 (£127) for 32GB on a two-year contract. Apple's cases will cost $29 (£18).
iOS 7, the release date of which was also announced at the event, was also said to be designed for the iPhone 5C.
The iPhone 5S was also announced at the event, which like the iPhone 5C, will launch on September 20th, with pre-orders available from this Friday (September 13th) onwards.

September 10th, 2013, 23:33 Posted By: wraggster
Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 5S smartphone - and it will launch in a matter of weeks.
The iPhone 5S was announced by Apple senior marketing VP Phil Schiller alongside the budget iPhone 5C at the event, confirming months of rumours that Apple would announce two new iPhone models.
The 5S will come in three colours: Gold, Silver and 'Space Grey', with the gold case having previously been leaked online. It boasts a fingerprint scanner, an improved camera, better battery life and more. Six iPhone 5S case colours have been confirmed, which can be seen towards the bottom of this official iPhone 5S features page.
The phone's chassis is constructed from high-grade aluminum, while inside the phone sits a new iteration of Apple's mobile processor: the A7.
The A7 is a modern instruction set, with two-times general purpose registers, two-times floating point registers, over a billion transistors and 100 square mm die size.
The A7 processor is also the first-ever 64-bit mobile processor, with iOS 7, which was also detailed, running in 64-bit. Apps will be able to run in either 32 or 64-bit, with all existing iOS apps re-engineered to run in 64-bit.
Schiller stated that the phone is "over twice as fast" as the existing iPhone 5. The A7 processor is said to give a performance boost 40 times faster than the original iPhone, with graphics 56 times faster.
"It's the most forward-thinking phone we've ever created," said Schiller.
The iPhone 5S will run OpenGL ES 3.0, with Schiller saying that it "will enable breakthroughs in performance for graphics-intensive games".
Donald Mustard, co-founder of Epic-owned games developer Chair, took to the stage to introduce iOS game Infinity Blade III.
"Infinity Blade III will redefine the power of gameplay. It will be available alongside the new iPhone 5S," Mustard said.
A new component to the 5S, called the M7, was also revealed. The M7 works alongside the A7 as a "motion co-processor".
The M7 measures motion data continuously through the existing gyroscope, accelerometer and compass. The data can be used by a new CoreMotion API which identifies user movement and optimisations based on contextual awareness.
Nike announced a new app called Nike+ Move which uses the M7 chip and GPS in order to keep track of the user's activities.
The iPhone 5S' battery life was also detailed, giving ten hours of LTE browsing or 3G talk time, 40 hours of music playback and 250 hours of standby time.
Following that, the 8-megapixel 5S' camera (iSight) was detailed, featuring a 15 per cent larger active sensor area and a five-element Apple lens with f/2.2 aperture. It has a burst mode and slo-mo video.
iOS 7 works with the new camera to automatically set white balance, exposure level and create a dynamic local tone map. Other features of the camera app is a mode that picks the sharpest of a series of photos, as well as autofocused matrix metering. It also has a 28-megapixel panorama mode.
The camera's new flash, called the 'True Tone', aims to solve the problem of clashing colour temperatures, giving more realistic skin tones. Digital image stabilisation and burst-mode shooting are also new, as well as slo-mo that shoots in 120 frames per second at 720p.
As previously rumoured, a new 'Touch ID' home button was also announced. The built-in fingerprint scanner is designed for security and can read fingerprints and biometric data in 360-degrees.
"Touch ID has been built deeply into iOS7," said Schiller. "You can make iTunes purchases by using your finger to authenticate."
Schiller then reassured the audience that users' fingerprint data would never be stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud.
The prices of the 5S were also announced: the 16GB model will be $199 (£123), the 32GB $299 (£190) and 64GB $399 (£254) with a two-year contract. Apple's iPhone 5S cases will be $49 (£31) each.
Without a contract, the 5S will cost £549 (16GB model), £629 (32GB) and £709 (64GB).
The iPhone 5S will be released on September 20th, with pre-orders able to be placed from September 13th (this Friday) onwards.

Microsoft's Xbox Music service has been expanded with iOS and Android apps, and free web browser streaming.
Now a year old, Xbox Music is Microsoft's attempt to compete with other music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora.
Offering 30 million tracks, until recently Xbox Music was only available on Xbox 360, Windows Mobile and Windows 8 and RT devices.
Now Microsoft has released new Xbox Music apps on iOS (6.0 and above) and Android, as well as a new web version allowing anyone to stream music through a browser.
For the first six months the service offers free music streaming, after which users are limited to 10 hours per month. For longer than this, you'll need to sign up for an Xbox Music Pass, which offers unlimited streaming on all devices for £8.99 a month (or £89.90 for a year).
Free streaming is only available for those using the web version and devices running Windows 8 or later, meaning the iOS and Android apps can only be used by those signed up for the Xbox Music pass.
You can access the free web streaming version today by visiting theXbox Music website.

Seagate's 5mm hard drives already have a home in slender laptops; today, they're coming to to Android tablets through the company's new Ultra Mobile HDD. The 500GB disk augments the existing 5mm design with a speedy 8GB flash cache, a tougher enclosure and firmware that improves both the energy consumption and shock tolerance. In theory, the Ultra Mobile HDD gives Android slates the capacity of a laptop drive without giving up the speed or resilience of flash storage. It will be a while before anyone can verify those claims, as Seagate hasn't mentioned any customers or ship dates. The company does have something to tide us over, though -- it's previewing a Rescue and Replace service that will offer both data recovery and drive replacements later this year, starting at $30 for two years. Check out details of both the Ultra Mobile HDD and the recovery service in the press releases after the break.

Opera's no stranger to the mobile web, as it's been building browsers for phones and tablets for years. Today, however, it's revealing an all-new window to the web called Coast. Coast's been constructed specifically for the iPad and seeks to make browsing the internet feel the same as using an app. What's that mean? Well, for starters, a series of swipe-able home screens and a tile-based UI that makes all your favorite websites look like icons. Also, Coast wholly does away with browser chrome, instead showing just content, with only small home and history buttons residing beneath whatever page you're viewing. Navigation forward and back's accomplished by swiping, and a customizable search bar sits atop your favorites. Essentially, Coast aims to be simple to use and to deliver web content in an unobtrusive, elegant way.
When launched, Coast shows you a tiled grid of favorites, and you can set the number of tiles you see per screen (the default is nine). Adding a new site's as easy as dragging and dropping it onto one of the home screens. Upon returning to home from a site, the icon tile of that last-visited page shows up beneath your favorites, so you can make it stick around permanently by sliding it up to join your other bookmarks. Coast also takes a page from the webOS playbook by providing your browsing history as a series of panes that are tapped for access or swiped upwards to be deleted. And, Opera has, of course, thought to secure the browser, too. Coast is backed by a security engine that constantly consults an online database of unsafe sites -- stray into a nasty corner of the internet, and Coast strings police tape across the page and warns you of the danger. You can also view the security and reputation of any given site by tapping the history button, then swiping down from the bottom of the webpage to reveal such info. Want to know how Coast came to be? Join us after the break to find out.
