The China specific operating system to combat the country’s reliance on Google Android.
Sliding sales of the phone and tablet manufacturer have not ceased, causing concern for the company’s future regardless of endless attempts to improve its situation.
Though, resilient as ever HTC is currently working on a new smartphone operating system specifically for China, reports the Wall Street Journal.
China is one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world today, and the market is predicted to get even bigger in the coming years.
However even though current market leaders Samsung and Apple dominate it as a whole, China aims to boost its homegrown gadgets to combat the foreign intrusion.
Google have had a rocky relationship with China in the past, as the search engine was banned in the country following the company stopping censorship of search results.
The technology ministry of China said in March that the country’s mobile industry is too reliant on Google’s Android.
Even though HTC is a new arrival on Chinese soil, the majority of its workforce speak the language making it an ideal place to do business.
HTC’s chairwoman, Cher Wand has been monitoring the project closely, which has fully embraced Chinese apps such as Weibo – a microblogging site similar to Twitter – making it even more appealing to that market.
The software will also work alongside a government policy encouraging the development of local software ecosystems, further fighting off overseas competition.
Even though China has such an aversion towards Google and in turn Android, it is currently unclear whether HTC will be developing a completely new platform, or will simply build on top of Android.

The first two games from Ouya's Free the Games promotion have been funded on Kickstarter. Gridiron Thunder, a football game that uses official NFL licensing, reached its $75,000 goal with 13 days left in its campaign. The other funded game, Elementary, My Dear Holmes met its $50,000 goal with 17 days left. Developed by Vancouver-based Victory Square Games, point-and-click adventure game Elementary, My Dear Holmes has players investigating mysteries not as the famous Baker Street sleuth, but as his faithful companion John Watson.
Ouya's $1 million Free the Games campaign has the company matching funds for successfully Kickstarted projects that earn at least $50,000. Ouya will match up to $250,000 for an individual project, the trade-off being that each game must remain Ouya-exclusive for six months. The company said more than 40 games have been submitted for the program, and 11 campaigns are live, including that of Gridiron Thunder and Elementary, My Dear Holmes.
Update: We've contacted both Ouya and Kickstarter regarding Gridiron Thunder's legitimacy, as the project's $78,259 came from just 126 backers, with some suspect funding spikes as tracked by Kicktraq. We will update as we learn more.

Evernote has let its Windows Phone app languish at times, but the company is making amends with a new version of its note-taking client that supports Windows Phone 8. The update primarily improves navigation and speed for modern hardware, although there are a few platform-independent additions. Users can now snap multiple photos without leaving the camera mode; the refresh also introduces photo slideshows, speech-to-text transcription and an automatic title generator. Evernote's big upgrade is available in the Windows Phone Store today, and there's promises of "lots more" coming to Microsoft's mobile platform in the near future.

EA's kicking off its free-to-play mobile strategy with an iOS version of the much-anticipated Madden NFL 25. Available now via the App Store, the popular gaming franchise arrives on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad as a gratis download, though there are (naturally) a slew of in-app purchases that Electronic Arts is hoping you'll splurge on. For example, there's an All Madden Bundle priced at $100. As far as gameplay goes, the publisher says this year's Madden on iOS has been improved with much better touch controls, which should go hand-in-hand with stuff like Ultimate Team and its trademark official licenses for all 32 squads. Speaking of which, we'rereally wondering who's listed as the starting QB for the New York Jets...

By tweaking the firmware on certain kinds of phones, a hacker could make it so other phones in the area are unable to receive incoming calls or SMS messages, according to research presented at the USENIX Security Symposium. The hack involves modifying the baseband processor on some Motorola phones and tricking some older 2G GSM networks into not delivering calls and messages. By 'watching' the messages sent from phone towers and not delivering them to users, the hack could effectively shut down some small localized mobile networks. Essentially the hacked firmware ... can block ... pages by responding to them before the phones that were initially intended to receive them do, something Kevin Redon and company called during their research 'the race for the fastest paging response time.'"Thanks to the power of Osmocom BB, which has implemented Free Software baseband for several GSM devices. Also see theresearch paper.

The S4 successor to come with a 16 megapixel camera.
Samsung is rumoured to be working on a new Galaxy S, containing a state-of-the-art 16-mega-pixel camera module, reports etnew.com.
Every new Galaxy is as popular as the last, and new models are rolled out at a rate of knots.
The next update - expected at some point next year - will feature improved camera capabilities, such as an image stabiliser.
16 mega-pixel cameras are expected to be the standard quality of camera on higher end smartphones from next year.
Higher quality cameras have been used on previous Galaxy devices such as the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which included a 10x optical Zoom and 16MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor letting a snapper capture images up close or from far away in all light conditions. The built-in optical image stabiliser (OIS) assists in keeping the camera still reducing blur and offering stabilisation when zooming right in.
Initially, the electronics company aimed to adopt the OIS function for Galaxy Note 3, however due to issues with parts supply, this was put off.
A Samsung Electronics official, said: "Samsung Electronics, which must procure tens of millions or parts, cannot but be uneasy about its supply chain. This is why the OIS function was installed on the G2 of LG Electronics, but cannot be found on Galaxy Note 3."
The new edition to the ever growing family of Galaxy devices, displays Samsung's eagerness to create a device that fulfils both the role of a smartphone and a good quality camera.

Third party payments can no longer be used.
The Google Play Developer Program Policies are being updated to require developers to use the digital storefront’s in-app billing services when selling virtual products within Android games.
Any Android game installed from Google Play will not be able to use third-party payments for in-app purchases.
Physical goods such as tickets or any other product where the price includes a hard copy or subscription are exception to the rule along with content or goods that can be utilised outside of the app being used.
Changes to the system interface provision forbids apps from Google Play from making changes to a device outside of the app with the user being aware and giving consent.
Google commented: “If an app makes changes with the user’s knowledge and consent, it must be clear to the user which app has made the change and the user must be able to reverse the change easily, or by uninstalling the app altogether.”
Google Play – who experienced more app downloads than Apple's App Store during the second quarter of this year – is also having its advertising policy refined, now denying ads built into an app from being displayed outside of the software.
Meaning that forcing a user the click on ads or submit information to use the full app is now prohibited. Ads will now be dismissible without being forced to follow a link.
The search engine is really cracking the whip on Android developers, who will have 30 days to rejig their apps to conform to the new rules.
Google said: “After this time period, applications discovered to be in violation may be subject to removal from Google Play. Any newly published applications must adhere to the latest version of the content policy for Google Play.”

The Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone has taken a shot at the Apple iPhone and iPad in a new advertisement by implying the Apple devices are poor at taking photos.
The jovial ad is set during a school play, where all the parents are struggling to take pictures of the stage from a distance. A lot of them are using what appears to be the iPhone and iPad, and they end up having to move towards the front of the stage to take better pictures.
As you'd expect, Mr. Cool stays at the back with his Nokia Lumia 1020, before saying: "We've got the best seats in the house".
The blurb on the ad description reads: "A kids's play is one of those times when you want to get the perfect shot. But most phones aren't capable of capturing quality photos at a distance. Even if it's just a few rows back.
"With the Windows Phone Nokia Lumia 1020 you get 41 megapixels so every seat is the best seat in the house."
It's not the first time Nokia has slammed the iPhone camera. It mocked the devices in its iZombies ad and again earlier this month.

Don’t mistake Siri for Glass – or Apple’s virtual assistant will start trash-talking Google’s tech headset.
In one of the more amusing clashes between big tech companies, Apple’s voice-activated assistant Siri, who comes featured on the newer generations of iPads and iPhones, will respond unfavourably if addressed with Google Glass’ activation phrase ‘Okay Glass’.
Siri’s witty replies have been previously noted, with fans of sci-fi classics such as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe and 2001: A Space Odyssey receiving satisfying easter-egg answers to requests such as ‘What is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything?’ (‘42’) and ‘Siri, open the pod bay doors’ (‘I can’t do that, Dave.’)
Despite Siri’s past wit, the Glass-centric responses are possibly the first time Siri has addressed a competitor’s product with disdain.
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has previously dismissed Google’s Glass as no threat to Apple, saying the headset wouldn’t be worn voluntarily by consumers. Siri, however, has remained quiet on the subject, perhaps because she/he/it only learnt the difference between ‘glass’ and ‘Glass’ in an update a few months ago.
Now having made up her/his/its mind, however, Siri apparently finds Glass unimpressive, responding to ‘Okay Glass’ with what appears to be five varyingly-negative replies, originally spotted by Twitter user @seanmbrage.
‘I think that Glass is half empty,’ is probably the most witty, while ‘Just so you know, I don’t do anything when you blink at me’ is more informative, with a tint of mockery. ‘I’m not Glass. And I’m just fine with that’ is questionably dismissive, while ‘Glass? I think you’ve got the wrong assistant’ suggests the user go out and use Glass instead, maybe being undeserving of Siri’s presence due to making such a silly mistake.
While the “feud” is obviously very tongue-in-cheek, it will be interested to see if and how Google replies. Maybe by replacing every Apple product the user looks at with a big red cross and the word ‘WRONG’.

Apple is rumoured to be launching an iPhone trade-in scheme next month, which will allow users to upgrade to a new handset for less.
9to5Mac.com reports that Apple hopes such an initiative will get more of its customers walking into Apple Stores, and thus made aware of its other products such as Macs and iPads.
Apple is said to begin training the majority of its retail staff with details of the iPhone trade-in scheme this week in time for the first week of September.
A couple of Apple Stores in Texas, US, have already internally tested procedures for the new programme, according to the report. Plus, the stores have apparently received empty shipping boxes, which will be used to ship the customers' second-hand iPhones to be refurbished and resold in emerging markets.
The iPhone trade-in programme was apparently going to launch during the last week of July, but was pushed back for unknown reasons.
Several retailers and vendors already run similar iPhone trade-in schemes, such as Carphone Warehouse, O2, AT&T and of course CeX.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the company's most recent earnings call that he would not be "opposed” to launching Apple's own iPhone trade-in scheme.
“I see channels doing it, and I like the environmental aspect of it, and so that part of it really is encouraging to me,” he commented.

A Korean website has claimed that the Samsung Galaxy Note III will feature 4K video recording and 24-bit audio.
On the website of the Korea Economic Daily, the author of the article claims that Samsung will next month announce the Galaxy Note III.
They continue to say that the smartphone will be the first ever to feature 4K (3840x2160p) Ultra-HD recording, a double-bump up from the full-HD (1920x1080p) recording of the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s own Galaxy S4.
To match the rumoured jump in video quality, the audio of the phone is also apparently getting a boost. The phone is said to feature high-quality 24-bit audio technology, matching LG’s G2 and outdoing Samsung’s previous Galaxy smartphones, which have all featured 16-bit audio.
The author attributes the inclusion of 4K recording as due to the ‘new buzzword in the TV market’. With Samsung itself offering 4K sets, it seems entirely plausible that the company would use 4K recording on a new phone to push 4K TV sales.
The Galaxy Note III is set to be announced alongside the anticipated wearable smartwatch from Samsung, the Galaxy Gear, on September 4th.
