News of a proven security vulnerability involving Apple iOS 7 has started making the rounds. The exploit specifically involves the lockscreen, the most common piece of security that stops an unauthorized individual from gaining access to anything important on your phone. The 'hack,' if you want to call it that, is simple: Swipe up on the lock screen to enter the control center, and then open the alarm clock. From there, hold the phone's sleep button to bring up a prompt that will ask you if you wish to shut down, but instead of doing that, hit the cancel option, and then tap the home button to access the phone's multi-tasking screen. With access to this multi-tasking screen, anyone could try opening up what you've already had open on your phone. If you had Twitter open, for example, this person might be able to pick up where you left off and post on your behalf. Or, they could access the camera — and of course, every single photo stored on the phone."The new iPhone models were released today; iFixit has a teardown of the iPhone 5s, giving it a repairability score of 6/10.

September 20th, 2013, 20:31 Posted By: wraggster
During an executive Q&A at Microsoft's Financial Analyst Meeting on Sept. 19 (video), outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer admitted that Windows Phone had a minuscule share of the smartphone market, and expressed regret over his company's inability to capitalize on burgeoning interest in mobile devices. 'I regret that there was a period in the early 2000s when we were so focused on what we had to do around Windows that we weren't able to redeploy talent to the new device called the phone,' Ballmer told the audience of Wall Street analysts and investors. 'That is the thing I regret the most.' Back in 2007, Ballmer famously denigrated the first-generation iPhone as an expensive toy that would fail to gain significant market share. He was forced to eat his words after the iPhone became a bestseller and ignited a huge market for touch-screen smartphones. Google subsequently plunged into that smartphone arena with Android, which was soon adopted by a variety of hardware manufacturers. While the iPhone (running iOS) and Android carved up the new market between them, Microsoft tried to come up with its own mobile strategy. The result was Windows Phone, which (despite considerable investment on Microsoft's part) continues to lag well behind Android and iOS in the smartphone wars. Even as he focused on discussing Microsoft's financials, Ballmer also couldn't resist taking some swipes at Google, suggesting that the search-engine giant's practices are 'worthy of discussion with competition authority.' Given Microsoft's own rocky history with federal regulators, that's sort of like the pot calling the kettle black; but Ballmer's statement also hints at how, in this new tech environment, Microsoft is very much the underdog when it comes to some of the most popular and lucrative product segments.

Women generally happier with their mobile brand experience
36 per cent say that lack of functionality on mobile sites and apps is their main usability issue, reports Eptica.
52 per cent of UK consumers revealed that over half of sites they visited on their mobile weren’t optimised for that platform, making it difficult to interact with companies.
It turns out that women are more satisfied with their mobile experience – with 54 per cent saying that the sites they accessed were actually optimised for a mobile compared to 42 per cent of men.
However 38 per cent of women did say that bad optimisation for smaller screens was the number one issue with mobile usability, whereas functionality was the leading bug-bare for 37 per cent of men.
Netbiscuits recently revealed that brands actually ignore 52 per cent of device types when developing for a mobile.
Paul Barnes, VP operations with Eptica UK, said: “Over half of us have smartphones, and tablet use is now mainstream, but it seems that many brands are lagging behind consumer expectations.”
Another issue for 34 per cent of mobile consumers was slow loading speeds. Google found that if a mobile site takes longer than a second to load visitors lose interest – even though the average response time is seven seconds.
Barnes continued: “The public demand the same experience on their mobile device as on their PC, but are being failed by substandard sites that are slow to load and don’t fit smaller screens. Many of these are basic issues that companies need to sort out before they lose customers to their rivals.”

Want to get your hands on one of the new iPhones – and then throw it on the floor? Here’s what happens if you do.
The iPhone isn’t known for being very durable. The slightest of knocks can cause the casing to shatter, leaving the device near unusable.
23 per cent of iPhone bought from the day of release in the UK will be damaged within a year, reveals SquareTrade.
The two most common ways to damage a phone is by being dropped (30 per cent) and spilling a drink on them (23 per cent).
Research has found that those who commute are 66 per cent more likely to damage their device; whist people who trade stocks frequently are 60 per cent more likely, and strangely tattooed individuals are apparently 37 per cent more likely… Go figure!
Previously the iPhone 5 took on the Samsung Galaxy S4 in a drop test with the latter arguable fairing not as well as Apple’s device.
Now, Apple takes on Apple in an epic test of strength, durability and vigor… well the phones get dropped on the floor.

September 20th, 2013, 20:25 Posted By: wraggster
Apple’s launch of iOS 7 on Wednesday (September 18th) appears to have been plagued by issues for users grabbing the major update.
The problems started almost immediately with the firmware’s release, with users attempting to download the update for Apple’s iPad and iPhones devices experiencing a multitude of error codes, malfunctions and incredibly slow download speeds.
Even some of those who managed to install the update have battled with the changes, with battery issues (a common complaint with iOS updates), app incompatibility and slow response times seemingly common.
Some app developers have advised users to stick with iOS 6 until the new firmware is fully free of bugs. The makers of app Audiobus have criticised changes in iOS 7’s new ability to transfer audio between apps, saying crashes and performance issues are widespread.
Security flaws have also been discovered in the fresh software, one of which allows anybody to bypass a passcode-locked phone by using iOS 7’s new ‘Control Centre’ from the lockscreen.
The intruder then enters the alarm clock app and holds the iPhone’s sleep button, before cancelling and double tapping the home button to enter the phone’s multitasking mode, from which photos can be accessed, as well as any social media accounts through which the photos can be shared.
The flaw can be stopped by disabling the lockscreen Control Centre in the iPhone’s settings, but remains a vulnerability for those with the feature, which is on by default, enabled.
Many took to social media networks to voice their opinions – both positive and negative – about the software, with over seven million tweets about iOS 7 in the first two days of its launch.
The tweets varied in their tone, with one user joking: “I never got what my wife went through being in labour for 30 hours with our twins until I started downloading iOS 7” and another saying “Uh wow, none of iOS 7′s new ringtones are of the musical genre dubstep. Talk about epic fail.”
Even parody Twitter accounts rode the zeitgeist, with “God” (@The TweetOfGod) himself appearing to have troubles: “There seems to be a slight bug in the Universe 7 upgrade software. Don’t worry if it starts raining methane. It will only last a few days.”

Prosecutors in New York and San Francisco have given Apple's new iOS 7 softwaresome high praise, all thanks to a simple security measure. District Attorney George Gascón (SF) and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (NY), both part of the "Secure Our Smartphones Coalition," are "strongly urging" smartphone owners to apply the company's latest update because it now includes the Activation Lock feature by default, prompting users to set a passcode the first time they use iOS 7. Once enabled, the security feature stops thieves from reactivating a stolen phone and will require the original owner's Apple ID and password to unlock a device, even after it's been wiped. Although it's relatively minor tweak, the attorneys believe it could help to reduce mobile-related crime -- in fact they're pressuring Google, Microsoft and Samsung to do something similar (although hopefully not too similar).

We've already seen Walmart undercut Apple by selling the iPhone 5c for less than the MSRP right out of the gate, but it turns out it's not the only retailer offering a deal. Target's also selling the 16GB version for $79.99 on a two-year contract from your choice of carrier, offering a savings of $20. You'll still pay the same $199.99 for the 32GB model, though, and there's no similar discount to be found on the iPhone 5s, either (Walmart has knocked it down ten bucks to $189). You'll find that price in store tomorrow, or you can get your pre-order in on Target's website now.

The moment operating systems become available to the public is also the moment millions of people have the opportunity to hunt around and find bugs. And, it appears that at least one rather critical bug has already been discovered in iOS 7. A keen-eyed user found a way to bypass the passcode-protected lockscreen and gain access to the device's photos app, giving him the ability to hijack the email or social network account associated with that device. Essentially, you access the alarm clock through Control Center, make your way into the multitasking menu and head into the camera app from there. We've embedded the video evidence below, just in case you're interested in trying it out for yourself; we tested it out using an iPhone 5s running iOS 7.0.1, and were able to duplicate the user's claims.
This isn't the first time we've seen an iOS bug capable of bypassing your lockscreen and compromising the security of your device, and Apple typically squashes those bugs with patches; the last one took a month, however, so we'd like to see an update to iOS 7.0.2 a bit sooner than that. While you wait, the easiest way to avoid this concern is to disable the ability to access Control Center from the lockscreen (this can be found in the settings).

Apple now offers native gamepad support in iOS 7, and ClamCase is making the most of that opportunity by unveiling the GameCase. The Bluetooth add-on will give iOS players a full-size, Xbox-like controller that should work in any title using the official gamepad API -- developers won't have to include proprietary code in their apps. ClamCase also promises ample play time through a built-in lithium-ion battery. The GameCase isn't expected to ship until late 2013 or early 2014, but there are plans to offer versions for all iPads and iPhones that run iOS 7. If you're interested, you can sign up for notifications from ClamCase at the source link.

Game controller support comes to iPhone and iPad as Game Centre also gets redesign
Apple has launched iOS 7 with a number of new features for game developers.
The Sprite Kit framework has been designed to help developers create “high-performance” 2D games by providing a set graphics rendering and animation APIs. The framework includes basic sound playback support, physics simulation and the ability to create particle systems.
Xcode also provides built-in support for Sprite Kit so that developers can create special effects and texture atlases directly in Xcode.
You can view a full programming guide, and it Sprite Kit can be used for game development, here.
A redesigned Game Centre features extra leaderboards (up from 25 to 100), the ability to authenticate players and also securely transmit game scores and achievements. The centre also supports matchmaking and new modes for turn-based play, such as push notification when it’s the player’s turn.
New conditions to challenges can also be added to specifically define when the challenge has been met. One example is a challenge to beat a time in a driving game which might stipulate that other players must use the same vehicle.
You can view more information on these changes here.
Another new addition being rolled out is third-party controller support. As revealed earler in the year, controllers will feature shoulder buttons, two joysticks, four action buttons and a D-pad.
There are three kinds of controller available, two form-fitting controllers in which the smartphone sits inside, and a wireless gamepad that connects to iOS or Mac devices. You can view the controller layouts below.

The messaging service will be available for the new platforms later this month.
As BlackBerry prepare to launch its first Phablet, the BlackBerry Z30 amongst rumours that the company will be sold by the end of the year – its popular messaging service preps its roll out to Android and iPhone.
The service - previously exclusive to BlackBerry – lets users chat to singular or multiple friends, share files, and set up personalised profiles.
A further update to BBM will provide a forum for active, real-time conversations between the user, brands, celebrities, artists, service providers, and communities.
Andrew Bocking, executive VP for BBM at BlackBerry, said: “With more than a billion Android, iOS and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile messaging platform, this isabsolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers.
The instant-chat platform currently has more than 60 million monthly active users on BlackBerry alone, with most of those chatters using BBM around 90 minutes a day, and sending or receiving more than 10 billion messages each day.
BBM will be available to download from Google Play on September 21st, and on the App Store from September 22nd.

A photo which appears to be a stock entry for the rumoured Nexus 10 tablet has been circulating Twitter.
If real, the image not only confirms Asus will be producing Google’s next flagship Android tablet, but also that it’ll cost £349 in the UK.
The current Nexus 10 tablet is produced by Samsung – so this would imply it’s been ditched in favour of Asus for whatever reason.
Nexus is the line of smartphones and tablets produced in close collaboration with Google in order to provide an ideal showcase of the Android platform.

Even if you don't feel like coughing up the cash for either the iPhone 5c or iPhone 5s, those eligible for an update (that's if you own an iPhone 4 or up, or an iPad 2 onward) can at least console themselves with iOS 7, which debuts today. Gone is the skeuomorphic design of the Forstall era, and in its place is a flatter interface that promises an entirely new experience for iOS devotees. As such, developers everywhere have been scrambling to get their apps redesigned to match the new mobile OS out of Cupertino. While we can't possibly cover every update, we've compiled a quick list after the break of the more substantial app revamps that have come our way.

It's hardly the biggest BlackBerry shocker of the day, but at least a few BB 10 fans should be able to breathe a sign of relief at Verizon's Z30 announcement. That handset, in all its BB 10.2 glory, is indeed coming to Verizon's LTE network. Pricing and availability remain the key unknowns here, but the Z30, which ships with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro and a 2,880mAh battery, is indeed on its way, Verizon logo and all.

It's iOS 7 release day, folks, and while we've told you about plenty of apps that have been updated to fit Apple's new aesthetic, we've got another for you. This time, it's Facebook, and instead of just giving its iOS app a fresh coat of paint, the team in Menlo Park has also delivered a new way to navigate its iPhone app. The upgrade brings an ever-present tabbed bar at the bottom of the screen that lets users seamlessly switch between News Feed, Requests, Messages, Notifications and More -- meaning as you slide your finger along that bar, the screens quickly switch from one to the other.
And, each of those tabs saves your state, so if you've scrolled down a ways in your feed, then do some messaging and come back, you won't have to roll through all the content you've already viewed. This function also transforms the More screen into a personally customizeable tab, as the app remembers whatever option you last chose. While this new option is a departure from the left-side nav users have grown accustomed to, the changes are very much made with you in mind. Developers went through 100 variants of the app tested by between 5-10 million users -- who wanted less friction in the UI -- and that feedback informed the redesign. Keep in mind, however, that iPad owners won't be getting this new nav (Facebook found that the existing UI was better suited to the larger screen).
As for the iOS 7 paint job? Highlights include wireframe icons and a translucent nav bar at the top of the screen that allows underlying content to bleed through, along with a general flattening of the app's appearance. However, users will only see this new look if they have upgraded to iOS 7. Folks sticking with iOS 5 and 6 will still get the new tabbed nav functionality, but the aesthetics will remain in line with the rest of their device's appearance. Wanna give the new Facebook a try? You know what to do.

When HP announced its first Android tablet, the Slate 7, we were surprised (and a little disappointed) to see the company attacking the low end of the market. Where were the high-end tablets, we wondered? What about some big-screened models? Or medium-sized ones? Turns out, HP was saving them all for the holiday shopping season. The company just announced four Android tablets, ranging in size from 7 to 10 inches. Two have Tegra 4, two can be had with 4G, and one has a stylus in the box. On top of all that, HP also introduced two more Windows tablets, including a 10-inch slate and an 11-incher with a keyboard dock. All will go on sale in November, though with the exception of one model HP isn't revealing pricing yet. For now, though, best if you study up on the specs: there's quite a bit to unpack here.

Activision has responded to the sales for Disney Infinity with an update on the performance of its own toy-game hybrid: Skylanders Giants sold more than 500,000 units in its first two weeks on sale, bringing the total revenue for the Skylanders franchise to more than $1.5 billion.
That figure includes both Starter Packs and Portal Owner Packs. Activision also claims that, if you factor in revenue from games, toys and accessories, Skylanders Giants is the most successful game of the year in Europe and the US in terms of dollars earned.
"We've accomplished this unmatched level of success by consistently delivering magic to our passionate, young fans," said Activision CEO Eric Hirschberg in a statement. "And the best is yet to come."
The "best" is presumably Vicarious Visions' Skylanders Swap Force, which is released worldwide next month. Swap Force will be the third full console release for the Skylanders franchise in little more than two years - a further three games have been released for iOS devices - though Activision has stated that it is not concerned about saturating the market.
The new lifetime revenue total of $1.5 billion indicates that the series is as lucrative as ever. The series debuted in October 2011, and didn't reach $1 billion in salesuntil February 2013. It has added a further $500 million in just seven months.
