Apple confirmed and assured everyone that it was working on a fix to the iOS 7 lockscreen bypass bug last week that let sneaky individuals mess with users' email and social network accounts. And now, exactly seven days later, said update is hitting handsets in the form of iOS 7.0.2. Directly to the point, the update is said to "fi[x] bugs that could allow someone to bypass the lock screen passcode." And hey, there's also a Greek keyboard option for passcodes thrown into the update for good measure.

Over 133 new studios opened within the UK in the last 18 months. 80 per cent of these are working on games for Appleâs iOS platform, and over 70 for Googleâs Android operating system. These are games built specifically for tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.
Vast install bases, open distribution channels and the rise of digital have all been identified as key factors behind this mobile blitz.
But what do UK studios working in the market have to say? And what of the industryâs bigger publishers looking to get their share of the mobile space?
âMobile gaming simply offers the lowest barrier to entry and ease to take to market,â says Team 17 MD Debbie Bestwick. âIt also has the largest and most diverse audience to aim for. Itâs no surprise that so many new studios have opened, the real test will be how many succeed.â
Itâs a view shared by many studios working in this burgeoning market for mobile games. The popularity of smart devices amongst not just core gamers but wider consumers and casual players presents a golden opportunity for developers to strengthen their relationship with their fan bases.
âIt feels like a gold rush sometimes when itâs phrased in that way. The allure of a more direct relationship with gamers has a lot of bearing, and thereâs nothing like being free from outside influence when youâre creating something,â says Phil Gaskell, creative director of Ripstone.
âThe empowerment that self-publishing on mobile presents is attractive, as is the sheer number of devices currently in use around the planet.â
âItâs because the devices themselves
are so popular. If Sony and Microsoft
could sell 800 million consoles, weâd
be making games for them.â Barry Meade â commercial director, Fireproof Games
Talk to almost any studio, big or small, and the motivation is the same: accessibility.
âWorking on these platforms is just really accessible and practical for folks who are comparatively small and limited in funding,â says Chris Southall, chief technical officer at Segaâs Hardlight studio.
But Fireproof Gamesâ commercial director Barry Meade offers a much simpler explanation: âItâs because the devices themselves are so popular. If Sony and Microsoft could sell 800 million consoles, weâd be making games for them.â
Mobile titles are paving a two-way street to success. Developers are able to push out quality games with a relatively small team and budget. Meanwhile, these casual games that value pricing and play constraints higher than most are finding themselves targeted by an influx of new gamers.
âThe demographic change recently is toward a younger and a more casual user. Where previously a smartphone was an expensive luxury, itâs now an affordable need,â says Mark Baldwin, community manager at New Star Games.
âThe pricing structure of games in the mobile market means that even people who are not hardcore gamers appreciate the chance of trying out a variety of games, and that means someone who wouldnât normally play games is more likely to try something.â

"Today the Federal Patent Court of Germany shot down an Apple photo gallery bounce-back patent over which Cupertino was/is suing Samsung and Motorola. A panel of five judges found the patent invalid because the relevant patent application was filed only in June 2007 but Steve Jobs already demoed the feature in January 2007 (). While this wouldn't matter in the U.S., it's a reason for a patent to be invalidated in Europe. For different reasons someone thought the iPhone presentation was a mistake. It now turns out that when Steve Jobs said "Boy have we patented it!" his company forgot that public disclosure, even by an inventor, must not take place before a European patent application is filed. But Apple can still sue companies over the Android photo gallery: in addition to this patent it owns a utility model, a special German intellectual property right that has a shorter term (10 years) and a six-month grace period, which is just enough to make sure that history-making Steve Jobs video won't count as prior art.

Apple's new iOS 7 operating system has been alive for a week and has had more than 200m downloads, but it's getting mixed reviewsâŠ
Apple unveiled iOS 7 back in June, at which time it was described as 'the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone'.
Considering the original iPhone is hailed as the reason the smartphone and app market exists as it does today, it's fair to sale the aforementioned claim is a bold one.
Three months on and iOS 7 was introduced to the public on Wednesday 17th September, and achieved more than 200 million downloads in five days, but it's had a mixed bag of feedback from users.
I rallied some of my iOS 7-wielding colleagues â aged between 20 and 50 â who have upgraded their iPhones/iPads to find out how they feel about the new software.
Check out 20 excellent responses below.
1. It's SHIT
2. I think the icons look childish now
3. Little slower and lock-screen music controls don't seem to work. Looks nice and has some neat features, though.
4. iOS7 is almost like a patronising introduction to iOS, simplifying it to such a degree that I'd feel more tech-savvy using a cup on a string.
5. It borked my iPad 2. Everything is now slowwwwwwwww.
6. For the first few days I thought it looked childish compared to the previous incarnation. Now I've got used to it, it works well and is easy to use. I am finding some of the apps a little slower though, especially Facebook. I can see why they have done this. It will suit the new iPhone 5c very well.
7. I have an iPhone 3G and I can't get ios7 apparently⊠I am a person that isn't bothered about technology and thus always 'inherit' mobile handsets from my brother or friends when they upgrade. I am already having a problem with the Facebook for iPhone app that won't load now so I have reported the bug to FacebookâŠ
I assume further problems will ensue due to my inability to have an ios7 update. On a regular basis I would like to throw my iPhone out of the window anyway and hanker back to life before with my skinny, clapped out Samsung D900⊠a bit. I am a 27-year-old single, professional female with no children and no cats (yet).
8. Pros â Massive improvements to calendar, more ringtone and alarm settings, clearer layout of emails
Cons â Some apps not compatible (more the devs fault, some previous iOS backgrounds not compatible
9. * It looks too similar to a Microsoft phone
* Camera quality doesn't seem as great for some reason.
* Also the deleting actions on e-mails have now changed so you have to swipe the opposite way.
* On a plus side I guess it looks fresher.
10. Itâs too bright and white it looks a bit toy like! Also itâs slower and battery life drains even quicker!
11. The flat look is appealing, but I donât think Iâve been educated enough about all the new effects ios7 has to offer.. And stop deciding how to file my photos for me!
12. Safari Navigation is less instantly intuitive. Calendar similarly so. Wild colour scheme seems garish, but these will subside with time probably.
13. I have iOS7 on an iPad mini.
* Turned off the parallax effect (motion of the background pic behind icons) as it makes me feel wobbly.
* I love the 'Cloud' based music & movie listening/watching ability
* Calendar is now easier to deal with
* No iTunes Radio player in UK yet on iOS7 devices
* Not going to update the iPhone 4s until much later in the year â just incase.
14. I really like it, itâs nice to look at easy to use (even though people keep complaining about it)
15. Control centre is a nice and useful addition. Really like the feeling of depth created by layering the background, apps and their subsequent windows. Not sure I like the new layout when you double-tap the home button.
16. My upgrade fatigue has reached terminal condition. I just can't be bothered to care anymore. At the point where you could give me a chunk of cardboard with Hello Kitty stickers on it and it wouldn't phase me.
17. It looks, nice, but the days of me being excited by OS updates have long since passed. Plus app swapping/closing seems somehow more fiddly.
18. Done the iPad to iOS7 â it does actually look closer to Hello Kitty now. Perhaps a âclassicâ icon option would have been nice, but there you go â you gets what mamma Apple gives ya.
19. Not happy about Apple forcefully changing my folder colours to reflect the colours used in my background image.
20. Basically, iOS7 sucks arse!

An appeal has been overturned allowing Apple to sell inâs trademark device in the country.
After losing against the Brazilian company over the right to sell the device under the iPhone name, a court ruling deemed the decision to be wrong, reports Cellular News.
Brazilian electronics supplier - IGB Electronica â previously registered the iPhone brand name back in 2000, but did not have it secured until 2008.
The company, in the hope that it would spur Apple on to purchasing the name off of them, released an Android powered iPhone in 2012.
However Apple did what all the big players do, and tried to sue IGB, surprisingly losing.
The appeal was overturned deeming that the iCompany would be able to sell its iPhone handsets without infringing on the Brazilian owned trademark.

ZTE is one of the few companies making a sly side-bet on Firefox OS, and next year it's planning to double-down on that initial wager with the launch of a second handset running Mozilla's smartphone platform. Speaking with IDG's Michael Kan at Expo Comm China 2013, ZTE's Executive VP He Shiyou expects the device to land first half 2014, with a larger display than its predecessor, a dual-core processor, a "revamped user experience" and, of course, a low price. The exec also said that, with approximately100,000 units sold, demand for the ZTE Open "has exceeded supply," and he anticipates double that figure in total sales. ZTE deliberately manufactured the Open on a small scale, but is optimistic about future adoption of Firefox OS. Shiyou believesHTML5-based apps will become more relevant as speedy network technology like LTE reduces reliance on native software, stating: "In the future, the app store business model will be no more."

When your name is on a Major League Baseball stadium, and you're a mobile operator, you carry the iPhone. Unless you're US Cellular, that is. For reasons that cannot be comprehended by mere mortals, one of the United States' largest regional carriers stillisn't offering the iPhone in any variant, despite promising back in May to carry Apple products before the year's end. In fact, things have gotten so bad over at USCC that its Facebook page has gone dead silent since September 13th, with customers far and wide ranting in the comments section about the carrier's inability to get the one phone they all want.
Making matters worse for USCC is the fact that Appalachian Wireless, C Spire, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellcom, GCI, MTA, Nex-Tech Wireless, Ntelos and Strata are all lined up to start selling both the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s on October 1st. We suppose even more could be added as time rolls on and the supply / demand balance rights itself, but it's probably high time for US Cellular holdouts to head on over to a rival. Patience only gets you so far, you know?

The BBC reports that an Alaskan airport says it has had to place barricades across one of its taxiways after an Apple Maps flaw resulted in iPhone users driving across a runway. The airport said it had complained to the phone-maker through the local attorney general's office. 'We asked them to disable the map for Fairbanks until they could correct it, thinking it would be better to have nothing show up than to take the chance that one more person would do this,' Melissa Osborn, chief of operations at the airport, told the Alaska Dispatch newspaper. The airport said it had been told the problem would be fixed by Wednesday. However the BBC still experienced the issue when it tested the app, asking for directions to the site from a property to the east of the airport. By contrast the Google Maps app provided a different, longer route which takes drivers to the property's car park."

Apple has rejected claims that it paid EA money to delay the launch of its Plants vs Zombies 2 app game on Android devices. UPDATE: EA says the quote was "taken out of context".
According to Giant Bomb, Frank Gibeau, head of EA Labels, apparently said during an internal town hall meeting: "Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]."
However, an Apple spokesperson described the story as "not true" and said that no money was exchanged.
In a statement sent to PCR, an EA spokesperson said: "A comment from an internal meeting taken out of context has created an unfortunate misunderstanding. Reports of a paid relationship between Apple and EA are factually inaccurate, and we apologise for any confusion.â
It could be that Apple and EA had previously struck a marketing deal around the game, and it looks like Gibeau's choice of words wrongly implies otherwise.
Excluding China, up until now Plants vs Zombies 2 has only been available on iOS devices and will launch on Android at a later date.
The PopCap-developed game has been downloaded more than 25 million times worldwie to date.

F-secureâs latest Threat Report reveals an increase in âmalverstisingâ.
According to the report, the first half of 2013 saw that malvertising â the advertisements that lead users to malicious products â is increasingly being used to distribute mobile malware, due in part to its wide reach.
358 new families and variants of Android malware were discovered by F-Secure in H1, nearly doubling the total number the firm has ever discovered to 793.
Symbian followed with 16 new families and variants. No new families or variants were discovered on other mobile platforms.
While still less sophisticated on a mobile than on a PC, F-Secure expects drive-by downloads to continue as an attack vector. Mobile drive-bys use a notification message asking if the user wants to install the app, making them more obvious than PC drive-bys, with the option to circumvent them.

Samsung has announced that it will release a smartphone with a curved screen in October.
Back in January, the Korean firm unveiled somesmartphone concepts at CES, showing different types of bendable displays.
The new announcement stressed that Samsungâs next phone wonât be âcompletely flexibleâ, so it seems it will be more in keeping with the âYoumâ prototype that was also shown off at CES.
The 5.5-inch prototypeâs screen stretches to the outer edges of the device, displaying notifications along the side.
Samsung didnât mention any specifics about the device and hasnât revealed its name.
The news was mentioned during Samsungâs Galaxy Note 3 launch in Seoul.

While you would be excused for thinking the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were Apple's latest offerings, you'd be wrong. Today, Cupertino has announced that the iMac range has been updated to include new silicon (Haswell) new GPUs and improved WiFi. The entry-level 21.5-inch iMac houses a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with iris Pro graphics, while the top spec version (both sizes) comes with 3.4GHz and NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics, plus the option to upgrade to core i7 at 3.5 GHz. That WiFi refresh brings "next gen" 802.11ac, and there's also support for PCIe-based flash storage meaning up to 3TB of Fusion drive, or 1TB SSD. The new models are available today, starting at $1,299 for the 21.5-inch, and $1,499 for the bigger display.

New figures from IMRG and Capgemini reveals sales via desktop have flatlined, with all online growth now coming through mobile devices.
For the first time, the etail trade associationâs monthly e-Retail Sales Index has stripped out all the mobile data from its overall online sales.
The data shows a âsignificant changeâ in consumer behaviour as shoppers in the UK move from laptop to mobile. As a result of this, the index has re-forecasted annual growth for mobile retail up to 15 per cent from the 12 per cent prediction made at the beginning of the year.
The figures revealed that while tablet devices account for 85 per cent of mobile sales in the year to date, the second quarter saw sales through smartphones grow 210 per cent against 130 per cent for tablets.
Tina Spooner, chief information officer, IMRG, said: âOnline retail is a sector that sometimes receives a strong boost from supporting technology and mobile is certainly providing that at the moment.
âThe latest findings, together with the continuing trend of triple-digit growth in mobile commerce, provide clear evidence of a culture change in digital shopping.â

Samsung appears to be taking some inspiration from Apple, and may release an iPhone-esque smartphone complete with metal body and 64-bit processor.
In a bid to keep up with rival Apple â whoâs new iPhone 5Scomes with an A7 64-bit processor, Samsung was quick to announce that it would release future smartphones also featuring 64-bit processors. It seems an almost certainty that the Galaxy S5 will be one of them.
In fact geeky-gadgets.com reports that the latest Galaxy model will be released sometime next year and will indeed come with the new processor.
Samsung is apparently looking to give the Galaxy S5 a more âpremium feelâ and is rumoured to have been in touch with the makers of the casing for HTC One and Appleâs iPad Mini, both of which have metal cases.
If Samsung does plan on making these updates, this could open up another opportunity for Apple to try and sue anything that vaguely resembles a piece of the iPhone.
Samsung and Apple have squabbled over many, many things in the past year, including an abundance of patent suits, Apple dropping Samsung displays, and just generally dissing each other.
