New features, easy access and a complete makeover for the mobile and desktop sites.
Firstly – HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY YAHOO MAIL.
To celebrate reaching this milestone in its life, Yahoo has updated its mail services for iOS, Android and desktop.
The look has completely changed, with a more elegant feel to it compared to the previous clunky and cartoony features.
User can now put a theme to their personal account, with a selection of images curated by Flikr – who introduced instagram-like filters and editing tools into its features back in August.
Any image chosen will be spread across every device that the mail is accessed on including desktop, smartphone or tablets.
Conversations have been introduced, so emails can be grouped together in threads, to save trawling through your account history in search of a message that has probably been deleted.
One-click actions such as deleting and flagging which appear as a drop down menu when you hover over an email, make for a slicker experience.
Many features previously reserved for Mail Plus customers are now free for all users, including disposable email addresses, enhanced filters and automatic message forwarding.
And as the icing on the birthday cake, Yahoo are giving its mail users 1TB (a whopping 1,000 GBs) worth of storage.
All updates are available from today for iOS, Android and Windows 8.

HTC have announced the Gold HTC One, an 18-carat model of the phone produced to celebrate the MOBO Awards.
The handset will be given to the winner of the HTC-sponsored Best Newcomer category at the 18th anniversary MOBO Awards on October 19th in Glasgow.
HTC has said that the Gold HTC One is “very limited edition”, with only five of the smartphone in existence.
Created in partnership with the founder of Goldgenie, which previously announced a platinum, gold and diamond-studded iPhone 5S, Laban Roomes, the phone is valued at £2,750.
The collaboration marks the first time Goldgenie has set its Midas touch to an Android device.
The body of the special edition One is plated in 18-carat polished gold, with a laser-etched ‘MOBO 18’ logo on the back.
"The best artists have always been given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phone,” said Phil Blair, HTC President of EMEA.
“We wanted to celebrate that fact. The award winning HTC One is the gold standard in mobile design and innovation, so it was an obvious choice to make it even more special.
“We're sure the winning MOBO artist will love their unique phone and we will even be giving a lucky member of the general public the chance to get their hands on one soon too."
“MOBO turning 18 is a huge achievement and a special time for us,” said Kanya King MBE, founder of the MOBO Awards.
“The 18-carat Gold HTC One phone is a great addition to our coming of age celebrations and helps add MOBO glitz to proceedings.”
HTC has recently been rumoured to be gearing up for a launch of the HTC One Max, with invitations sent from HTC Hong Kong to journalists translating as: “One finger opens up a big view. You are invited to immerse in the sound with us.”
The handset is expected to have a bigger display, fingerprint scanner and BoomSound speakers. The product launch event – which will possibly reveal the One Max – will take place on October 16th in Hong Kong, followed by another launch in Taiwan on October 18th.

Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt claimed that Android is a more secure mobile operating environment than the iPhone in an interview at yesterday’s Gartner Symposium/ITxpo.
The bold claim prompted laughter from the audience. And, unfortunately for Schmidt, the laughter didn’t stop there…
After noting that Android had over a billion users, and saying that the platform has gone through rigorous real-world security testing, Schmidt then told the audience that they would be happier using services like Android, Chrome and Gmail, which prompted even more laughter.
Realising that he was probably preaching to the wrong crowd Schmidt decided to discuss some other topics, including Chinese hackers, Google management and privacy and trust issues amongst the computer industry.
There has been a number of Android security flaws and detected malware recently, including a flaw that enables rogue apps to turn legitimate apps into malicious Trojans, and an increase in “malverstising” on the Android platform.

iTunes Radio has already reached deals for campaigns with McDonalds, Nissan, Pepsi and P&G.
Users can customise stations and purchase songs they like. iTunes Match subscribers can access an ad-free version of the service.

It might not excite as many as 150 million people, but the 500px update for iOS 7 could make a lot of its avid users' weekends. To keep up with the crowd, the photo-sharing network has refreshed its app's looks, getting rid of its unsightly black bezel for an edge-to-edge design accented with translucent panels. A handful of new features are also sprinkled in, including the ability to quickly Like or reply to any comment by swiping it. For the iPad, a photo's detail page now shows everyone who Liked and added it to their favorites. The homepage (or Flow, as the network calls it) now also displays the user's avatar next to the image they Liked, Favorited or commented on. While these changes have yet to make their way to Android, iOS users can quickly hit Update on the App Store or click the Source link below to download 500px.

You've heard every hero with a wrist-worn communicator cooly say it to his watch: "I'm on my way." Fearless words, spoken before charging into danger: a nostalgic experience you can now have with the Galaxy Gear. This, at least, seems to be the promise of Samsung's new smartwatch ads, which likens the Gear to Dick Tracy's watch radio and Kirk's gangly wrist-communicator from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's a cheesy marketing tactic, but we can't say we blame the company -- we made the very same parallels in our review of the device. The two ads feature a parade of inspirational smartwatches, flaunting hardware from Power Rangers, Inspector Gadget, Knight Rider, the Jetsons, Predator and more, suggesting in their titles at the Gear is an "evolution" on these ideas and "a long time coming," at that. Limited device compatibility and fledgling third-party support leave those claims up for debate, but that doesn't make the nostalgic overview any less amusing. Check the videos out for yourself after the break.

Microsoft's plan to supercharge Xbox as an entertainment brand means that, no matter which ecosystem you live in, you'll have access to some of the company's first-party titles. In the same way that Kinectimals came to Android and iOS, today's free-to-play launch of Wordament sees another proprietary feature opening up: Xbox Live Achievements. Anyone with at least an Android 4.0 handset and a few friends should now be able to add up to 50G to their Gamerscore. Meanwhile, Windows Phone users should be happy to see that their version of the app has been re-written for WP8, banishing those odd letterboxing issues forever.

Typically, Samsung's smartphones for Japan aren't much more than slight modifications of its regular devices. The company may soon cater directly to local tastes, however: a leaked NTT DoCoMo brochure on 2ch.net has revealed the Galaxy J, which appears to be designed solely for the Land of the Rising Sun. The handset reportedly has the 3GB of RAM, Snapdragon 800 chip and squared-off look of theGalaxy Note 3, but the smaller 5-inch display of the Galaxy S 4. There are also Japan-specific extras, such as 1Seg TV tuning. While there aren't any clues as to the Galaxy J's release date, NTT DoCoMo will likely say more about the device when it unveils its winter smartphone lineup on October 10th.

Despite the number of companies shipping or promising them, smart watches aren't the easiest sell, and Ars Technica's review of Samsung's entry illustrates why. Despite all the processing power inside, the watch is "sluggish" even for the kind of at-a-glance convenience features that are touted as the reason to have a phone tethered to an (even smarter) phone, and for the most part seems to weakly imitate features already found on that phone. There are a few features called out as cool, like a media control app, but for the most part reviewer Rob Amadeo finds little compelling in the Galaxy Gear.

Features of Google's next Nexus phone have finally been outed, along with confirmation that the phone will be built by LG, as a result of a leaked service manual draft; here are some of the details as described at TechCrunch:"The new Nexus will likely be available in 16 or 32GB variants, and will feature an LTE radio and an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (there’s no mention of that crazy Nikon tech, though). NFC, wireless charging, and that lovely little notification light are back, too, but don’t expect a huge boost in longevity — it’s going to pack a sealed 2,300mAh battery, up slightly from the 2100mAh cell that powered last year’s Nexus 4. That spec sheet should sound familiar to people who took notice of what happened with the Nexus 4. Just as that device was built from the foundation laid by the LG Optimus G, the Nexus 5 (or whatever it’s going to be called) seems like a mildly revamped version of LG’s G2."

The sinking handset maker holds talks with even more companies to combat the $4.7 billion offer from Fairfax Financial.
BlackBerry is allegedly in talks with Google, Cisco and SAP regarding the whole or part sale of its business, reports Mobile World Live.
The Canadian company seemed to be close to settling with the $4.7 billion offer from Fairfax Financial, however as more potential buyers crawl out of the woodwork, BlackBerry is seeming increasingly unsure of which direction it should take.
It has apparently even reached out to Intel, LG and Samsung for preliminary expressions of interest.
Although why a company such as Samsung who is the leading global handset manufacturer - or LG, whose mobile business recently returned to profit – would be interested is unclear.
Another company that has shown interest, is Cerberus Capital Management, who specialises in ‘distressed assets.’
It is said to be planning a confidential agreement with BlackBerry to access its financial information

The graphics tablet manufacturer will now offer creative professionals its design tools on Android.
Marmalade – who recently optimised its SDK to support the new Tizen OS -announced that Wacom has used its cross-platform development tools to launch its Wacom Creative Canvas for Android OS.
The graphic drawing application has been embedded into Wacom’s new professional creative tablet, the Clintiq Companion Hybrid.
Marmalade’s SDK has enabled Wacom engineers to code in the general purpose programming language, C++, and roll out to new platforms, such as Android.
Hartmut Woerrlein, head of global product management at Wacom, said: “We’re extremely happy with our decision to choose Marmalade to develop a high-quality drawing app for our new product.
“The biggest challenge was to fulfill the creative professionals’ requirement to support extremely high-resolution and support Wacom’s leading pen-pressure technology.”
The company will now be able to provide pen-pressure support for the EMR (electro magnetic resonance) technology that sets its own tablets aside from other creative devices, on Android OS.
Harvey Elliott, CEO of Marmalade, commented: “Wacom’s specialist products really are the best in their field and Marmalade is delighted to assist their growth in the tablet market where they can reach even more creative professionals with this innovative app and product.”
The Cintiq Companion Hybrid tablet will be available on Wacom eStores from mid October.

October 7th, 2013, 19:33 Posted By: wraggster
The UK is fast becoming a “throwaway nation”, where “old electronics are being dumped before the end of their useful life”, according to a new survey.
The survey, conducted by BidGrid.co.uk, found that 16 per cent of UK mobile owners throw their old phone in the bin when they replace it.
"Prices of gadgets are so low these days, customers prefer to buy new rather than send off a broken item for repair," said Emma Brown of BidGrid.co.uk.
"Unfortunately, many people don't know how to dispose of electronics properly, so they're often thrown straight into the bin.”
Just over a quarter (27 per cent) of owners instead sell the old handset, with 15 per cent giving it away and around a third (33 per cent) leaving the devices to sit in a drawer.
Only four per cent of people asked recycled their phones.
BidGrid.co.uk suggested that the growth in phones being discarded while still operational was due to the increase of rolling phone contracts, “early change” offers and an obsession with keeping up with new technology.
"Nobody seems to want old stuff any more,” explained Brown.
“Once a new generation of technology emerges, we are very quick at dumping the old. It's as if we can't bear to be left behind."
"It's much more evident in young people, where the peer pressure to have the best new tech is the strongest."
The average lifespan of a new mobile phone was found by the research to be only 23 months among under 21 year olds, compared to three years for those aged between 21 and 30 and four years for over 30s.
Brown compared the short lifespan of phones with the time that consumers keep items such as cookers, fridges and microwaves, which are held onto for 20 years, 15 years and the “best part of a decade” respectively.
“We found that people are less likely to dispose of their large household items,” explained Brown.
“Customers will put up with the same 'white goods' for donkeys years as long as they don't break.”
Brown stated that despite a greater number of abandoned devices, services designed to recover and revitalise prematurely dumped electronics were also becoming more popular across the UK.
“Interestingly, small electronic item collection bins raising funds for charities are now appearing in recycling centres and car parks across Britain,” she said.
“It's an acknowledgement of the size of the trend, and the value that's still in these used goods.”

Samsung has unveiled its new adverts for the Galaxy Gear, using clips from films and TV to show the ‘evolution’ of the smartwatch.
The Korean firm’s new set of adverts have decided to take a break from poking fun at Apple and focus on trying to convince Sci-Fi fans that they need the Galaxy Gear in their life.
The first video, entitled “A long time coming”, shows various clips from film and TV where people have worn some sort of space-age watch, including ones from Star Trek, Dick Tracy and Knight Rider.
The second shows the “Evolution” of the Galaxy Gear, with a close-up look at watch devices from films such as Predator, Inspector Gadget and Power Rangers.
The Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be released in October and will set you back £299.

It appears that nothing about the hardware of Google and LG's next Nexus smartphone will be left to the imagination by the time it releases. Android Police just got its mitts on what's claimed to be a 281-page draft of a service manual for the DE21. Surprise! The product specs match up nicely with the DE20 that went through the FCCa month ago -- and then some. This leak reveals the best shots yet of both the internals and the exterior, as well as a through listing of every spec. To refresh your memory, we've known those to include a 4.95-inch display, a 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, inductive charging and NFC. This particular model's LTE bands (1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 20) are optimized for Asia and Europe.
Let's move on to the notable new bits. There's an eight-megapixel camera with OIS on back and a 1.3-megapixel shooter on the front. Storage is capped at 32GB and the battery tops out at 2300 mAh. The IPS display has a 1080p resolution and screen tethering is supported via Slimport (just like the Nexus 4). While it's packing the usual array of sensors for a phone (gyroscope accelerometer, compass, proximity and light), there's also one that detects pressure. Lastly, there's the obligatory notification light and a Micro SIM slot. Be sure to be slightly wary of all this, however -- as Android Policenotes, there are some oddities in the document (Bluetooth is now listed as 3.0 instead of 4.0, for instance). You'll find the full manual embedded after the break and you can hit the source link for further insight. We'll update you if we discover any other juicy bits.

As the title suggests, the game is a spin off of NimbleBit's iOS hit, Tiny Tower, with players ditching skyscraper planning in favour of building their own Death Star.
"Live life on the dark side and join Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader on a mission to attract Galactic bitizens, run intergalactic businesses, and build an all-new Death Star," describes the announcement.
"Construct unique Star Wars themed locations to attract iconic characters and species to your space station in this 8-bit style game."
The game is slated to release "soon" for mobile devices.
The original Tiny Tower sees players managing their own skyscraper, adding new floors, hiring staff for businesses and filling apartments with tenants. Apple declared it best iPhone game in 2011.

Now that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is available to the public, you know what that means. Yep, it's time for Samsung to release its kernel source code so that Android developers can get cracking on perfecting their apps for the 5.7-inch handset. As withpast releases, the Korean company has kindly complied, revealing the source code for Sprint, AT&T and SK Telecom versions today -- it posted eight other international variants last week. The SM-N900P version is for Sprint and is expected to have a sizable software update soon, the SM-N900S is the one for SK Telecom, while the AT&T model is SM-N900A and is the only one with a locked bootloader thanks to the carrier's restrictions on that front. Sure you'll be unable to install custom ROMs on the latter, but programmers can still download the files to see what else the code has to offer. If that applies to you, go ahead and hit the source link to get started.
