Trying to jump the queue in the real world? Forget about it, all you'll get is a host of hostile glares. In the world of technology however, it's a very different story. For instance, all impatient Galaxy S 4 owners, desperate to bring Android 4.3 to their handsets need to do is download and install SamMobile's latest leaked build. The nearly-complete version of the OS offers no headline-grabbing tweaks or amendments, but so long as you're up to the task of installing it, you'll save yourself a few days or weeks of waiting for Samsung to push it to your device.

It's autumn, which means it's time for Microsoft to come out with its latest and greatest update for Windows Phone. This year, however, the company isn't pushing anything as drastic or significant as WP8, and it even shows in the name of the refresh itself: GDR3. (GDR stands for General Distribution Release.) The update, which will begin rolling out in the coming weeks and "will continue over several months," doesn't feature any improvements to the notification experience, but it delivers on a few important enhancements that are sorely needed -- especially when it comes to hardware support.
First, GDR3 will now offer Start screen support for screens between 5 and 7 inches, with resolution support now set at a maximum of 1080p (both of which lend credence to the leaks we've seen of the Lumia 1520, Nokia's upcoming 6-inch device). As an aside, we've confirmed with a Microsoft rep that this update won't be adding support for full-on tablets, though we can't rule out that possibility in a future refresh. Future Windows Phones can become much more powerful as well, now that the update adds support for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 quad-core SoC.
On the software side, Microsoft is throwing in Driving Mode, which limits notifications on the lock screen and can be set to trigger whenever you connect a Bluetooth device. You can also close individual apps in the multitasking menu, lock your screen orientation and assign custom ringtones for text messages. Also, remember that annoyingly vague "other" category in the storage settings? GDR3 now breaks it down into more specific categories and lets you manage each one (excepting the system storage). Aside from these enhancements, Microsoft claims "hundreds" of other tweaks and fixes, many of which are under the hood. For a few more details, head below the break to look at the official blog post in its entirety.

Microsoft wants to not only make life a little easier for Windows Phone devs but encourage more of them to come into the fold as well, and a new addition to its development program known as the Windows Phone Developer Preview may help nudge a few third parties (not to mention dedicated enthusiasts) in the right direction. The Preview program gives registered developers early access to the latest OS updates -- for right now, that means GDR3 -- before it begins rolling out to the eager public. To take advantage of the preview, you'll need either a Dev Center account, an App Studio account or a phone that's registered and unlocked to developers; you also run the risk of bricking your device if you don't do things exactly right. The program will become available tomorrow, so if you're one of the interested folks but don't meet the criteria, you'll want to make sure you get your ducks in a row today.

Apple has offered online trade-ins for the last few years, and now it's bringing its in-store version across the pond to the UK. The fruity phone flinger is letting customers wander into one of the company's retail outlets, drop off their elderly hardware and walk out with credit for a replacement. Apple released the following statement, which should sound familiar to anyone who had already read the US version -- after all, all someone did was add the phrase "in the UK" to the text."iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores in the UK are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling. In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone."
Update: We're also hearing news that the trade-in program has gone live in a few other European countries this morning. We've contacted Apple and will let you know what the official line is when we hear back.

With the holiday season fast approaching, it looks like Nokia is eager to bump up sales in the UK lest it get trounced by the competition. For Vodafone customers shopping around for a new Windows Phone, that means getting a free year-long Netflix subscription with the purchase of a Lumia 1020. According to The Financial Times, Nokia will bear the brunt of the cost, while the extent of Netflix's financial involvement is unclear. Though the Lumia's photographic capabilities are undeniable, the phone hasn't quite caught on like wildfire, largely due to inaccessibly high pricing, even on contract. Considering that just last month, AT&T and Microsoft slashed the two-year contract price from a whopping $299 to $199 in the US, this type of corporate anxiety is hardly surprising. The Nokia/Netflix arrangement might prove mutually beneficial, as the latter is keen to expand in European markets, though time will tell if it's enough to reel in holiday shoppers.

In a move that's about as useful as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, BlackBerry has issued an open letter to customers and partners designed to quell their fears. Despite a recent spate of well-publicized ill fortune, the company claims that its loyal customers "can continue to count on Blackberry." To anyone with eyes or ears, the effort may seem overly optimistic, considering the harsh reality of BlackBerry's dire straits. The past few months haven't been the cheeriest; the Z10's disappointing launch was recently blamed for a loss of almost one billion dollars, massive layoffs are expected by the end of the year, and the company's future is anything but certain.
But in spite of all that, BlackBerry claims that it still offers customers the best in mobile productivity, security, social networking and enterprise management. Essentially, the company is trying to put a sunny spin on its plans to cut costs by 50 percent through its restructuring efforts. "These are no doubt challenging times for us," the letter reads, "and we don't underestimate the situation or ignore the challenges. We are making the difficult changes necessary to strengthen BlackBerry." You can check out the full missive for yourself at the source link below.

Developers also able to implement gamepad API in older versions of iPhone and iPad OS
Middleware firm Unity has integrated iOS game controller support into its popular development platform.
Included in the latest 4.2.2 update, controller support will plug directly into the standard Unity input API.
As well as being applicable to iOS 7, in which controller support was first implemented, Unity will also run gamepad-based titles on older versions of the operating system for Apple devices.
In line Apple regulations however, developers will not be able to create controller-only titles, as games must also support a standard touch user interface.
You can find more documentation on controller support in Unity 4.2.2 here.
Other updates featured in the latest update to the engine include a number of fixes to graphical issues and iOS compatibilty problems.

Apple's tablet range thus far includes the traditional 9.7-inch iPad design, which was followed by the 7.9-inch iPad Mini last year. Samsung's Galaxy Tab line, meanwhile, spans seven-inch, eight-inch and 10.1-inch designs.
However, the rival manufacturers are both said to be producing 12-inch tablet designs, according to Digitimes, which is expected to spark a consumer appetite for large-screened models that will be detrimental to the notebook market.
The laptop space is already suffering, of course, withtablets set to overtake shipments this year before passing PC shipments in 2015.
Apple is thought to be working with Quanta Computer – Apple iWatch partner – on its foot-long slates, while Samsung is going at it alone by producing the devices in house after a Google partnership was dumped because the Android creator wants to concentrate on seven-inch models.
But what's 12-inches when compared to Panasonic's 20-inch tablet?

Renders of LG’s new curved smartphone have leaked online via Engadget.
The site has posted three images, which are in keeping withthe sketch of the G Flex that CNET obtained at the beginning of October.
It shows that the device will indeed have a curved screen that bends from top to bottom, as opposed to the Samsung Galaxy Round, which curves from left to right.
While the Galaxy Round comes with a 5.7-inch screen, sources tell Engadget that the G Flex will feature a 6-inch screen.
The sources also claimed that LG’s G Flex smartphone will be released ‘sometime next month’.

It has been quite a while since my last blog post for ax86. I have been working on the Raspberry Pi version, and then on the GCW-Zero version of my emulation core, so this Android version has not seen much progress. However, now I have a new licensee for my core, and thus now the Raspberry Pi and GCW-Zero versions are on hold until I can make all the changes to my emulation core that the new licensee needs. The new licensee is a company called Amiga Games Inc / Retro Infinity.
Amiga Games Inc has licensed many old Amiga games, and the Retro Infinity side of the company has similarly acquired licenses for many old DOS games. They plan to release the games on iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 8 platforms, among others. They are interested in using my emulation core when running DOS games on ARM-based devices, and thus I am currently working on porting my emulation core to run on all those platforms. Android is the easiest as my ax86 project already runs on an Android device, the other platforms need more work. In addition to this porting project I need to create a suitable API to my emulation core which the user interface created by them will use.
Since they hope to release the first games by this holiday season, you can imagine that I have quite a lot of work to do in a relatively short time for this project, and need to put my other emulation projects on hold for a while.
Amiga Games Inc / Retro Infinity is owned by a public company Writers' Group Film Corporation, which has released several press releases concerning their future plans, if you are interested. See for example the following:

In this article I’m going to create a jQueryMobile based client for Jamendo Radio.
The JQuery Mobile based UIs can be run on almost every smartphone platform; iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry10, Tizen, Firefox OS etc. The development of JQuery Mobile based UIs is very nice, since you can develop them with HTML and JavaScript in a standard desktop browser.

InterLOGIC is based on the old Amiga logic game “Balls”. The object of the game is to move balls of different colors through a maze, connecting them with other balls of the same color. Two or more connected balls of the same color will disappear. The aim of the game is to clean the whole maze in this way. The balls are connected if they are right next to each other horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally. The current release contains 30 mind-breaking levels for you to solve. Ported to Symbian OS v3 by AnotherGuest.
