Security specialist Bitdefender claims attacks on Macs – such as the recent ‘Flashback’ malware – are increasing.
Since its discovery in September 2011, Flashback has managed to infect more than 600,000 machines, making use of no less than three separate vulnerabilities to download and execute itself on Mac OS systems from compromised websites.
The original version of Flashback tried to trick users into downloading it by pretending to be an installer for Adobe Flash. Since then, a new form has appeared which, rather than needing someone to install it, uses an unpatched Java vulnerability to install itself. In the security business, this is known as a drive-by download – something Bitdefender says is increasing.
“There has been very little publicity around Mac OS viruses,” Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist at Bitdefender, told PCR. “This drive-by download technique is only becoming more popular.
“In recent years, we’ve seen a massive increase of cyber-attacks targeting the OS X system.”
To try to combat this, Bitdefender has launched a new piece of software aimed at enhancing protection for Mac users worldwide.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac features a faster scanning engine developed especially for OS X. The software also incorporates TrafficLight, an application that filters web traffic and blocks access to malicious websites and phishing attacks threatening Apple computers.
“TrafficLight provides security for one of the wider attack surfaces which exist on Mac systems – namely the browser,” explained Cosoi.
“Phishing sites and known compromised websites which serve malware are blocked, links provided by search engines or social web sites are scanned in advance. Scripts which try to track your behaviour on the web are flagged, so you can make informed decisions about your browsing. The most important part is, of course, the anti-malware filtering.”
With all browsers using Java and Javascript, and with the transition to HTML5 underway, the Java engines themselves have become a tempting target for malware writers.
“Exploiting Java means exploiting the browser, which in turn means gaining access to a lot of user data, this includes banking info, passwords, pins and card numbers,” added Cosoi.
This is evident in the Flashback Trojan. After infection, the malware opens up a Software Update window to try and obtain the user’s administrative password in a bid to further embed itself into the Mac. Unfortunately, at this point, whether a user puts their password in or not, the machine is still infected.

Real-life board game Pandemic is coming to iPads on October 3 as Pandemic: The Board Game, developer Z-Man Games has announced. Pandemic: The Board Game will join iOS games like Pandemic 2.5 and Plague Inc, the latter of which is developed by Ndemic Creations. Because none of these names could possibly confuse anyone.
In Pandemic: The Board Game, up to four players take on one of seven roles, such as Scientist and Medic, to help stop the spread of deadly diseases. The game will feature an animated interface, interactive tutorial and multiple difficulty levels.
It is unknown whether or not it will also include tips on how to tell friends about the game without confusing them as to which Pandemic you are talking about.

The EU has been known to make a lot of odd decisions when it comes to tech, but one committee's latest vote is one that most people will likely agree with: Standardized smartphone chargers. If passed, this decision would cut down on never having the right charger handy, but as far as the EU is concerned, this is all about a reduction of waste. The initial vote went down on Thursday, and given its market saturation, it seems likely that micro USB would be the target standard. Now, it's a matter of waiting on the EU Parliament to make its vote.

Final Fantasy 4: The After Years will launch on Android and iOS this winter, the European Square Enix blog announced. Set 12 years after the original Super Famicom game, the Japanese mobile game first launched in 2008, later arriving on WiiWare in 2009 and PSP in 2011.
The "full 3D remake" of Final Fantasy 4: The After Years features "completely recreated graphics," as seen in the accompanying announcement trailer. Square Enix doesn't specify whether the game will launch in North America, nor does it mention a price for the game, though the now-available Android version of Final Fantasy 5 is priced at $15.99/£10.99/€14.99 on the Google Play store.

Square Enix has today discounted iOS games Deus Ex: The Fall and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
Both titles have had more than 60 per cent slashed off their regular price. Until the end of the weekend, The Fall is priced at £1.99 / €2.69 (usually £4.99 / €5.99) and Guardian of Light at £1.99 / €2.69 (usually £1.99 / €2.69).
The Fall is playable on iPad 2 and above, iPad Mini, iPhone 4S and above, and iPod Touch 5 and above. Guardian of Light is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch devices and requires iOS 3.0 or later.
We said in our Deus Ex: The Fall review: "There's about five hours of game here, or three if you don't pursue the numerous optional missions on offer.
"For us, the best thing about this spin-off is returning to Human Revolution's universe. It's one of our favourite game worlds, and the high production values and beautiful environment design in The Fall are as good as anything in the main game. So good, in fact, that we wonder if - and hope that - Square Enix will release it as PC/console DLC."

Microsoft is apparently far closer to bringing together its disparate stores than many thought. The company has reportedly already demoed a single app portal for both Windows and Windows Phone behind closed doors at its annual company meeting in Seattle, according to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley. One of her sources tells her that the new unified store will likely launch alongside the next iteration of Windows, version 8.1, although other sources were less certain on this. In any case, the gossip tallies with comments by Microsoft's Terry Myerson last week, who said that he sees the unification of Microsoft's platforms and APIs as a priority.

Sure, Google already has Chromecast for throwing websites and media to big screens. The company's engineers believe they can go one better, however, with something called the Open Project framework. It's an effort to find a standardized way of mirroring not only content, but also touch inputs on a suitably equipped touchscreen or connected TV. Setting it up is simple: open the Open Project server webpage running on the machine connected to your chosen display, scan a QR code with your smartphone camera, and boom, you're ready to interact with your content and apps. It opens a world where people can collaborate on content or play multiplayer games without additional hardware or sensors. Open Project remains a proof-of-concept for now, or perhaps a plaything for UI-obsessed billionaires, but check out the video to see where the technology might take us in the future.

It's not often that events of a patent tiff transcend the humdrum noise we're all too used to, but the most recent judgement of a Munich court has declared an Apple patent invalid based on prior art from, well, Apple. As Florian Mueller of FOSS Patentsexplains, Cupertino has racked up a couple of decisions going against both Samsungand Motorola based on a patent for "portable electronic device[s] for photo management," which describes a bounce-back aka rubber-banding effect specifically within the iOS photo gallery app. Now, Apple's lawmen successfully argued the UI feature was different from previous concepts presented by AOL and Microsoft (which could benefit Cook & Co greatly in other cases, Mueller says). However, there was one piece of prior art they couldn't dispute: the feature in question being shown off by Steve Jobs at the OG iPhone keynote back in January 2007. (We've embedded video of the keynote below, but you'll need to jump to 32:40 to catch the gallery bounce-back bit.)
You see, even though the rubber-banding feature was demonstrated by Apple, on an Apple device, it still counts as prior art that invalidates its own patent -- in Europe at least. That's because documents describing the feature weren't filed until June 2007, almost six months after Jobs took to the stage. A similar, first-to-file situation is now part of the US system, of course, ever since the America Invents Act was signed into law in 2011. As the first-generation iPhone keynote came years before that, however, it's unlikely to hold any weight in future US court decisions. Well, you can't win 'em all Apple, especially when you're up against yourself.

Just a few short months after Virgin Mobile's Sprint-fueled US arm listed the iPhone 5 for sale, the MVNO is teasing the smartphone's successors as "coming soon." According to the firm's homepage, both the iPhone 5s and 5c will debut for prepaid customers, though pricing and availability remain unknown. Judging by the previous-gen's starting price of $550, however, you might want to start saving up now. The iPhone 4S, meanwhile, remains on the ticket. That handset is currently listed for 15 percent off its $450 sticker price, available today for $382.49.

Another day, another lawsuit finally drawing to a close. This time, a judge has approved a settlement for a class-action lawsuit filed against Apple and AT&T, based on the unlimited data claims of the original iPad that were later withdrawn by AT&T. So, if you bought a 3G iPad before June 7th, 2010, you'll get a $40 payout from Apple, even if you stand among AT&T's grandfathered customers. Meanwhile, if you purchased the original 3G iPad but didn't get a mobile plan, you're also eligible for a $20 / month discount for up to a year under the carrier's current $50 offering. The toddler-aged class action was born out of affected customers' frustration over the change and the belief that they overpaid for their devices as a result. Unfortunately, the ruling won't be finalized until February 2014, so don't expect to hear from Apple about the payout -- or plan a modest $40 dinner for two -- until then.

The introduction of fake zooms, parallax, sliding and other changes in Apple's new iPhone and iPad software has a very real effect on people with vestibular disorders. ... It makes frequent use of zoom and slide animations; the home screen boasts parallax, with icons apparently floating above subtly animating wallpaper. And it's making people sick. Triggers and symptoms vary, but TidePool mobile app developer Jenni Leder's experience is not uncommon. A self-professed power-user, she frequently switches apps; but on iOS 7, this has caused headaches and feelings associated with motion sickness. 'I now have to close my eyes or cover the screen during transitions, which is ridiculous,' she told The Guardian, adding that there's nowhere to hide: 'It's not apps that affect me, but accessing them. Tap a folder and the view zooms in. Tap an app and it's like flying through the icon and landing in that app's micro world — and I'm getting dizzy on the journey there.' Reactions to screen-based systems — especially those utilizing 3D effects — aren't new. Cynthia Ryan, executive director of the Vestibular Disorders Association, says 3D effects can cause 'intense nausea, dizziness and vertigo,' sometimes from general vision problems, but also from visual-vestibular conflict. She added symptoms 'manifest more severely if a viewer already has a disorder of the vestibular system.

September 28th, 2013, 19:46 Posted By: wraggster
The concept of the smartwatch isn't actually new. Japanese manufacturers introduced watches in the early '70s with digital user-programmable technology, though these watches were quite limited in functionality.
By the '80s, watches were introduced with rudimentary computer functionality, including keyboards and wireless docking. But those watches are to today's smartwatches what the Zach Morris phone is to today's smartphones: large and clunky with limited predecessors.
Considering purchasing a smartwatch? Here's what to expect.
1. Operating systems
You'll recognise the names and looks of all the available smartwatch operating systems, but the smartwatch OS will differ from the smartphone OS in the same way that your smartphone OS differs from the one on your desktop PC.
The size of the watch limits the way in which we can interact with the device. Just as you learned to use tablets after a lifetime of working with larger PCs and laptops, you'll similarly adjust to the smaller platform of the smartwatch.
2. Functions
You can expect the same functions from your smartwatch as you do your smartphone. Though the features available from one manufacturer to another or one model to another differ, there are smartwatches available with all the standard goodies, such as:
- Phone
- Media player
- Bluetooth
- Camera
- Compass
- Calculator
- Touch screen
- GPS
- Date
- Weather
Oh, and smartwatches also tell the time, of course. Some models offer the features of a sports watch, including a thermometer, altimeter, barometer, training programs, heart rate monitor, and a dive computer.
Of all the features on a smartwatch, two of the most appreciated are how hard they are to drop and break, and how it's almost impossible to forget one in a taxi or a client's office when it's attached to your wrist. Also, with the phone on your wrist, you'll never risk missing an important call because you couldn't hear it ring.
3. Connectivity
Of course, it wouldn't be a smartwatch without wireless internet connectivity. As with your smartphone, most smartwatches offer multi-player gaming platforms, social media connectivity, email, news feeds, sports feeds, entertainment news, and other ways to connect with others online.
Smartwatches connect via the same technology as smartphones, meaning you can expect the newest models to come equipped with 4G connectivity. In some rural areas of the country, 3G is still the standard, so 4G isn't guaranteed anywhere you go, but smartphones experience the same limitations.
4. Apps
Smartwatch apps look and work much like smartphone apps. Along with the games, news, and social media apps, you'll find apps for fitness, banking and finance, business, and self-help apps. Some platforms require you to download an app to your smartphone before you can begin using your smartwatch.
Apps for smartwatches are available in the same app stores where you get your smartphone and tablet apps, and many are available for free. Still, the market for smartwatch apps is far from as rich and satisfying as the market for smartphone and tablet apps. But this should change as more smartwatches become available, increasing the market for app developers.
5. Possible downsides
As with any new technology, it takes manufacturers a while to tweak things to perfection. Smartwatches are generally larger than the watches most people are used to wearing, and it takes some wearers time to adjust to the extra size and weight.
As with smartphones, the screen is the primary battery hog, and most smartwatches have to be charged every three to four days. This is a long time to go without charging a smartphone, but most people aren't in the habit of charging their watches regularly.
Some users also feel silly using the phone feature of smartwatches. People look a bit like characters in a '60s spy flick talking into their watches. Others complain that talking on the smartwatch lacks privacy, since you can't hold it discreetly to your ear like a smartphone. Most smartwatch phones use speaker mode always, due to the design. Also, manufacturers are still working on creating a user interface that offers a worthy experience in such a small package.
It all comes down to a matter of taste. If you like being on the cutting edge of technology, smartwatches are easier to carry and harder to drop or leave behind than smartphones. You just have to deal with the tiny screen and keyboard and remember to charge it often. The latest models, however, are quite stylish and look nice with both business suits and casual street clothes.
Most smartwatch plans require an operative smartphone account to work, so you won't have to chose between your watch and your phone just yet.

A DualShock controller is not needed to play the entirety of upcoming PS3 exclusive Beyond: Two Souls.
Players will be able to play the full game from start to finish using only their Apple or Android smartphone and the free Beyond Touch app.
"It connects to the console via Wi-Fi, and from this point you can play the entire game, in single-player if you want, just using your iPhone... just with one finger,” creator David Cage told Eurogamer.
“It's a very simplified interface [and] makes the game very passive and simple. Not everybody was born with a DualShock controller in their hands."
Cage also confirmed that the game will be playable in co-op with the second player controlling the still mysterious ghost-type-figure that main character Ellen Page is linked with.
Beyond: Two Souls will be released on PS3 on October 11th.

Corona SDK and microconsole partner to create more opportunities for developers
To provide its developers with more distribution opportunities, Corona Labs has now partnered with low-cost Android console Ouya.
“In the midst of the console versus mobile debate, we’re offering developers the best of both worlds,” said a statement from Corona.
Corona SDK, which is already a widely used choice among mobile developers, is prized for its development speed.
Less 500 games are currently on Ouya, which makes its market is far less saturated than the App Store or Google Play, and Corona is encouraging developers who wish to see their game on televisions to take advantage of this opportunity.
Specifically, Corona SDK Pro and Enterprise developers can now incorporate Ouya’s game network and integrate in-app purchase into their Ouya games.
Billed as having accessible development stream, with publishing control and lower financial barriers, Ouya was released earlier summer. Since then, its makes have tried a number of hit-and-miss strategies to reach out to independent developers.

Nokia harnesses the power of lightning to charge its Nokia Lumia 925.
That pretty much says it all.
Not all phones could withstand the shear natural power of lightning, but Nokia reckons its Lumia devices can.
Benjamin Franklin said that lightening “has been fatal to many, both man and beast” – and he is right. Not many a happy ending has come out of someone or something being struck by it.
Yet Nokia and The University of Southampton have teamed up in a bid to harness to the power of Thor - minus the thunder, storms and oak trees – fearlessly tackling mother natures battery power source head on to charge their phone.

iPhones have been blamed by a property maintenance firm for a lack of motivation among young people to work, and compared to the devil.
Will Davies, the founder of aspect.co.uk, which has a turnover of £12 million, said that "the latest batch of young people lack any drive or desire to work - largely thanks to the warm, punch-drunk, sedated feeling of being permanently online to their friends on the internet".
"The iPhone is always on," Davies explained. "Always in the background. Always more important than getting off your backside and getting to work for many young people."
"Young people today are like the vision of humanity in the film The Matrix, starring Keanu Reaves, where humans sit lifeless with a tube plugged into the back of their heads for food. In this case it's the iPhone".
Aspect.co.uk ran its first unemployment bootcamp in the UK in 2012, where young unemployed people could compete for an apprenticeship by taking part in several tests, and plans to run a similar 'GoThinkBig' bootcamp on October 16th this year.
"There is no need or desire for a young adults to strive anymore, to apply for a job where they are forced to confront the emotion of failure,” said Davies
"Instead young people are permanently encased in Phoetal fluid like a baby in their mother's womb checking their iPhone or smartphone device for pointless messages and updates".
Davies also criticised the presence of the internet among young browsers, stating that, for some, "the virtual world has taken over from the real world".
He went on to compare the iPhone’s negative influence on young people to the temptation of the devil:
"Steve Jobs joked about selling his first computer for $666.66666... a recurring number, but more importantly the number of the Beast".

Just a week after it began the first phase of putting iPads in the hands of all 640,000 students in the region, the Los Angeles school district already has a fight on its hands. In a matter of days, 300 children at Theodore Roosevelt High School managed to work around protective measures placed on the Apple tablets, giving them complete access to features -- including Facebook, Twitter and other apps -- that should otherwise have been blocked.
Students bypassed the security lock on the device by deleting a personal profile preloaded in the settings -- a simple trick that has the school district police chief recommending the board limit the $1 billion rollout (including hardware and other related expenses) before it turns into a "runaway train scenario." For now, officials have banned home use of the iPads while they assess ways to better restrict access -- they would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids.

In an unusual bout of frankness, a Samsung official has acknowledged that the Galaxy Gear smartwatch lacks, you know, whatever the Korean is for je ne sais quoi. As reported by the Korea Times, the unnamed official said:"We've acknowledged that our Gear lacks something special. With more investment for user interface and user experience, Samsung devices will be better in terms of customer satisfaction."
We're not sure if the source of the quote is Samsung's VP of strategic marketing, Lee Don-joo, but this exec is quoted in the same Korea Times article as saying that the watch is "definitely receiving a warm response" and that improvements would stem from software tweaks and the hiring of new UI experts, rather than from the development of a whole new device. He described the Gear as part of Samsung's drive to create new categories of "wow product" and, in virtually the same gasp, he also reiterated that Samsung would launch some sort of heavily curved -- or perhaps evenpartially bendable -- smartphone in Korea next month.

Apple is no stranger to lawsuits targeting the iPhone and iPad, but over in Japan, it's the company's older iPod design that has landed it in hot water. Kyodo News reportsthat the Tokyo District Court ordered Apple to pay ¥300 million ($3.3 million) to Japanese inventor Norihiko Saito for infringing on a patent covering the touch-sensitive click wheel used in the iPod Classic and older models of its iconic music player. Saito's damages come more than five years after he filed the patent lawsuit, during which time he demanded damages of ¥10 billion ($101 million), based partly on the number of iPods Apple had sold during that period. Fortunately for Apple, the final figure was substantially less than Saito's demand and it'll only have to sell a few more iPhones to cover the cost.

Ardent old school Final Fantasy fans know: the mobile versions of classic FF games can be rather costly. Square Enix, the franchise's publisher, is well aware of how much your nostalgia values the series, and Final Fantasy V is no different at $16. Perhaps you've already got the game on Super Nintendo and iOS, but needed another platform to try it out on? At very least, the mobile version has some fancy new graphics and a handful of added job types to help ease the pain of paying so, so much for a far from new game. Head below for a trailer of FFV for Android in action.
