The iPhone 5S has failed to excite existing users of Appleās iPhone, a survey has suggested.
The survey, conducted by Usurv, found that less than a third (31 per cent) of iPhone users want to upgrade to the 5S when itās released on September 20th.
Users of phones made by other manufacturers, such as Samsung, Nokia and HTC, appeared to show even less enthusiasm.
Samsung Galaxy owners were particularly unimpressed, with only six per cent interested in upgrading.
Blackberry owners were the second most supportive of the 5S behind existing Apple users, with 13 per cent saying yes to upgrading.
Of the 5Sā announced features, the fingerprint scanner embedded in the phoneās home button captured the attention of users most, 30 per cent of those interviewed finding it the most appealing addition, while the 5Sā new low-light camera feature trailed second in interest. 40 per cent of people found nothing appealing about the new phone.
Guy Potter, director and market researcher at Usurv, said: āWhile 31 per cent of iPhone users wanting to have the new iPhone 5S can hardly be called a failure, the desire for the phone does seem muted, with fewer people immediately excited by the device than for last yearās model.ā
āOf the new features, only the fingerprint reader seems to have caught peopleās attention. The brand is under pressure to deliver excitement and innovation at every launch and this time the initial mood indicates that in that sense it has failed.ā
Although the 5S appears to be struggling to drum up interest, the also-announced iPhone 5C looks to be attracting potential customers with its lower price range, available from the equivalent of £63 ($99) on a two-year contract in America.
40 per cent of iPhone users said they had previously been put off buying an iPhone due to the high cost, which was echoed by a majority of Nokia users (59 per cent). The iPhone 5Cās lower price might attract customers after an iOS experience without paying for the top-end 5S model.
āThe fact that a significant slice of people had been put off buying an iPhone in the past could suggest that Apple might be able to tap in to a wider market with the lower priced iPhone 5C,ā commented Mr Potter.
āHowever itās difficult to say whether the price is actually low enough and how operators will price it in their contracts.ā

September 12th, 2013, 23:26 Posted By: wraggster
O2 has released the first UK prices and āRefreshā tariffs for the iPhone 5S and 5C.
The iPhone 5S, to be released on September 20th, will be available from £37 a month with an upfront fee of £119.99.
The money will net customers a 16GB 5S, unlimited minutes and texts and 1GB of 3G data.
For an extra £10, the 5S will come with the same storage, minutes and texts, but adds 5GB of faster speed 4G data.
The iPhone 5C, seen by many to be Appleās ābudgetā iPhone model, has also been priced, for less than expected.
For an upfront £49.99 followed by monthly payments of £32, the 5C will comes with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of 3G data.
Like the 5S, for £10 more the 5C will comes with 5GB of 4G data, and makes the calltime allowance unlimited.
O2 says that both phones should run on its upcoming 4G network, which should launch in the next few weeks, hopefully by the time of the phonesā launch on September 20th.
O2 is offering customers who opt for the 4G tariff for either phone £5 off their bill until the network goes live. The data included in the contract will still be accessible.
Both new and existing O2 customers can receive the tariffs. Customers not already on an O2 Refresh tariff can buy out their remaining contract using the āSpeed to Refreshā service, which also lets customers change from a 3G to 4G contract, with O2 footing 25 per cent of the remainder of each userās contract.
Customers who took the 4G Price Promise offered by O2 are also eligible to upgrade to 4G, if they purchased an iPhone 5, which isnāt 4G-compatible, from September 21st 2012 to March 31st 2013.
O2 is also offering a recycling service to knock up to Ā£280 (dependant on condition and the model of the phone) off of a new phoneās price or an old phoneās remaining contract when customers trade in their old handset.
The iPhone 5C is available to preorder from tomorrow (September 13th) onwards, while the 5S will only be available on launch day for both of the phones (September 20th).
What remains to be seen is whether customers will be interested enough to purchase the 5S, and if the new prices for the 5C are low enough to tempt those previously scared off.

Samsung has announced that its future phones will have 64-bit processing capability, following Appleās reveal of the 64-bit iPhone 5S.
Appleās recently announced smartphone will run on its ARM-based A7 processor, which will support 64-bit apps, including graphically intensive games and Appleās native apps, which have been rebuilt to run on the platform.
āNot in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality,ā Shin Jong-kyun, Samsungās mobile business chief, told The Korea Times.
Shin also told The Korea Times that Samsung would be concentrating on efforts in Chinese and Japanese markets, noting that āApple [also] intends to boost its mobile business in China, as well as Japan.ā
As of the end of Q2 2013, Samsung had the largest market share in China with 19.4 per cent of the market. Apple had a 4.3 per cent share.
Despite the competition between the two companies, however, The Korea Times reports that āSamsung is hoping to strike a comprehensive cross-licensing deal with Apple, as Samsung officials think the huge gap in smartphone share as shares means increased leverage on negotiations.ā
Some observers have seen Appleās announcement of the cheaper iPhone 5C model as an attempt to target the Chinese market, where the prices of previous iPhones may have put off potential customers.

September 12th, 2013, 23:22 Posted By: wraggster
Apple has released more details about the āTouch IDā fingerprint scanner integrated into the iPhone 5S.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journalās āDigitsā tech blog, an Apple spokesman reiterated previous statements that fingerprint images wouldnāt be stored on the phone, reassuring those who had expressed privacy fears.
What the 5S will store is encrypted āfingerprint dataā, locked in the phoneās processor. The data will be used to unlock the phone and make iTunes, iBooks and App Store purchases.
The method should mean that a userās actual fingerprint shouldnāt be accessible, even if a hacker were to access the processorās data.
Again reassuring some fears, Apple also told Digits that third-party apps were not currently allowed to use the fingerprint scanner.
The scanner must also be backed up by a passcode, which must be used to unlock the phone if itās rebooted or hasnāt been unlocked in 48 hours. Apple said that the move was to deter hackers from taking their time to figure out how to bypass the scanner.
Touch ID is an improvement upon existing laptop fingerprint scanners, said the spokesman, but added that customers shouldnāt expect the scanner to be completely perfect.
Testers of the device have found that fingers covered in sweat, sun cream or other liquids have sometimes failed to work, and that scarred fingers can be hard to read.
In most cases, however, another finger can just be used instead.

The iPhone 5C will launch on September 20th, but unlike the also-announced 5S, customers will be able to preorder the device from tomorrow (September 13th).
As well as announcing the phone, Apple also released details of mix-and-match colour cases for the multi-coloured range of 5C models available.
Like with the 5S, however, Apple has released very few details concerning UK pricing, with only O2 so farannouncing tariffs and contracts details for both the 5S and the 5C.
Both phones are released on the 20th, but it may be that the cheaper 5C might see more success among consumers than its more expensive brother.

September 11th, 2013, 23:38 Posted By: wraggster
The chief executive at Ouya has defended a controversial investment initiative, called the Free the Games Fund, in the wake of allegations that two companies have exploited the system for personal gain.
Ouya boss Julie Uhrman addressed a growing number of critics on hercompany blog, stating, "if we can put aside the doubt and embrace the spirit of this fund as it is meant, and of Ouya as it is meant, we might just be surprised by what a little positivity can produce."
Ouya founder Julie Uhrman says the controversial Free The Games Fund will continue [Image: The Verge]The response has drawn negative comments from established indie developers, from Rob Fearon to Sophie Houlden, who have published their comments beneath Uhrman's post. Meanwhile, a noticeably large collection of developers on Twitter, such as Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell, now openly oppose the Free The Games Fund.
The initiative guarantees to double the funds of any successful Kickstarter project provided they are exclusive to the Ouya console for at least six months. An investment pool of $1 million has been set aside for qualifying projects that successfully raise anything between $50,000 and $250,000.
In addition, the game that raises the most through this system will be awarded an extra $100,000 bonus when the initiative closes in summer 2014. That means a project which raises $250,000 could theoretically go on to make $600,000 after Ouya's bonuses are factored in.
However, two Kickstarter projects applying for the extra cash have drawn unfavorable attention due to the nature of their funding.
Football title Gridlion Thunder has managed to raise $170,000 from just 183 people, equating to nearly $1,000 of investment from each backer. Meanwhile, a separate project - called Elementary, My Dear Holmes - managed to raise nearly $60,000 from 861 backers (around $70 per person).
It is alleged by many, though not ever proven, that both these projects have been backed by investors who have already established ties with each project. The allegation, which has not been proven, is that such investors see an opportunity to effectively double their money by exploiting the Free The Games Fund. It is not certain that such practices are unlawful or breach Ouya and Kickstarter rules.
Kickstarter has since suspended the Elementary, My Dear Holmes campaign. Sam Chandola, a representative for the project's developer Victory Square Games, said he was saddened by the accusations of manipulation and claimed he was actively trying to disqualify suspicious backers before suspension.
"We had been hoping suspicious accounts would have been suspended so that we could keep on going strong and without controversy," he said in a statement issued to Polygon.
It is unclear whether Kickstarter will lift its suspension of the Elementary, My Dear Holmes project. Chandola claims that the game has now caught the attention of various venture capitalists. Kickstarter has declined to comment.
The developer of Gridlion Thunder, MogoTXT, has issued a statement on Kickstarter thanking its backers but has not yet responded publicly to any of the allegations.
Uhrman has said the intention behind the Fund "seems to have been lost".
"This response [from the community] surprised us, we thought this was going to be great, how could it not be? We launched the Free the Games Fund to find great games from the very platform that gave us life. We wanted to make magic happen and help developers bring their games to Ouya."
She insisted that the funding initiative will remain open.

The iPhone 5s was expected. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, was merely rumored. Now that Apple has taken the wraps off of two new iPhone products, it's the newest range that strikes us as the most curious. For months, pundits have wondered if and when Apple would attack two obvious markets: the large-screen market -- which Samsung is lapping up in supreme fashion at the moment -- and developing markets. The iPhone 5c addresses neither of those, which begs the question: who exactly is Apple targeting?

The dust has settled on Apple's 2013-era iPhone launch, so it's time that we delved into what the damage is here in 'ol Blighty. EE, along with its buddies Orange and T-Mobile, has confirmed that it'll carry both the iPhone 5s and 5c from launch. LTE contract users who are six months into their EE deal will also be able to take advantage of the conveniently-announced Swap service. O2 has said that customers will be able to use O2 Refresh to upgrade their handset from launch, and Vodafone and Three have both given the thumbs-up to carrying the pair of handsets. No-one's talking about specific contract pricing, but we expect carriers will drip-feed this information in poker-faced chunks between now and the September 20th launch date.

Indie developer Sophie Houlden has withdrawn her game Rose and Time from Ouyaās digital marketplace.
Houlden says the decision is a result of Ouyaās response to the ongoing Free the Games Fund controversy, which this morning drew criticism from many developers.
āIāve been stewing on this for a while, and made the decision this morning,ā she wrote on her blog. āThe reason is not because of any flaw of the console (I love it), or the game (the Ouya version may even be the best), or sales (I average 1 sale per day, way more than elsewhere). The reason is because I am no longer comfortable supporting the Ouya company.
āItās not that they put out a tasteless advert, itās not that the Free The Games Fund is a poor way of investing in interesting developers, itās not that they shun the very developers they claim to want, itās not that they support people using the fund that are clearly scammers.
āItās their inability to admit that they have ****ed up. Shit is blowing up on all sides, every single piece of PR that is put out damages Ouyaās reputation more, and the plastic-marketing-smile never seems to come off. They never get serious to deal with stuff. They never change course when things are going down the toilet. They try to have this image of an indie, but itās only an image.
āI have tried (desperately) to tell people that the console is good, well worth $100 and that there are some great games on there, that the policy of letting anyone publish on the console for free is amazing and a big step forward⦠but Ouya are making me look stupid for supporting them. And I donāt like being made to look stupid.
āAfter reading Julie Uhrmanās blog post last night it became very apparent to me that the company does not support indie developers who need the support most, and that they are incapable of ever correcting their mistakes. Iām simply no longer comfortable supporting the company.ā
Houlden adds that she will continue to make the game available for those who have previously purchased it via Ouyaās service.

The first device with 64-bit desktop-class architecture and a fingerprint scanner.
So the wait is over ā Apple unveiled its new devises, and operating system and once again claims to have redefined the smartphone.
The iPhone 5s is its current flagship product, boasting an A7 chip, eight megapixel iSight camera, a secret-agent-like fingerprint scanner and of course the much anticipated iOS7.
Philip Schiller, senior VP at Apple, said: āiPhone 5s is the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, delivering desktop class architecture in the palm of your hand. iPhone 5s sets a new standard for smartphones, packed into its beautiful and refined design are breakthrough features that really matter to people.ā
The new A7 chip has doubled the CPU (central processing unit) and graphics performance, and has increased the overall speed from launching apps and editing photos to playing graphic-intensive games.
Introduced onto the device is the M7 motion coprocessor, which takes the strain off of the main CPU, conserving battery life.
New features for developers include the CoreMotion APIs, which use the M7 coprocessor to offer a better platform for fitness and activity apps. It measures the users motion data, even when the device is asleep, saving energy for pedometer or other fitness apps that use the accelerometer all day.
What could be the most talked about addition to the new iPhone is the Touch ID, a new way to quickly and easily unlock the phone with the touch of a finger.
The print reader uses laser cut sapphire crystals paired with a capacitive touch sensor, taking a high-resolution image of a fingerprint so it can be read from any angle.
Connectivity of the device has been improved with download speeds of up to 100 Mbps, and WiFi support for up to 150 Mbps.
The usual memory sizes are available with the 16GB priced at around £549, the 32GB at £629 and 62GB at about £709.
iOS7 will be available as a free update for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation) from 18th September.

Everything the iPhone 5 was, just a little bit more colourful.
Apple new iPhone 5c has previously been said to be its budget device to compete against the increasing market of cheaper smartphones.
However at just Ā£100 cheaper than the iPhone 5s, we are not sure if ābudgetā is the right word.
The newest aspects of this device - which is pretty much just the iPhone 5 ā that are immediately noticeable, is that it is made of plastic and comes in blue, green, pink, yellow or white.
The 5c is built on the A6 chip, and has an 8 megapixel iSight camera like its flagship counterpart.
Apple has said that it comes with more LTE bands that any other smartphone, and obviously runs on the iOS7 platform.
Philip Schiller, senior VP at Apple, said: āiPhone 5c is everything the iPhone 5 was and more, in an all-new design packed with great features. iPhone 5c is designed with a beautiful polycarbonate enclosure that looks and feels so solid in your hand.ā
We must admit, it looks nice, and it is refreshing to see an iPhone that has some natural colour to it. However if it is planning on taking on the emerging markets where other lower cost devices are so popular, then it may have some trouble.
The 5c is available with 16GB of memory for £469 and the 32GB model for £549.
The iPhone 4s will still be available for Ā£349, with the iOS7 update being available for it soon. But who wants yesterdayās toys?

More than 28 per cent of smartphone users already plan to upgrade to the new Apple device.
As the war between Apple and Samsung rages on, smartphone owners are being drawn to the iPhone 5s like a moth to light.
Apple currently holds the lead over Samsung as the most popular handset manufacturer with 53 per cent saying that they are interested in the new iPhone compared to 51 per cent who are more interested in the Galaxy S4, reports VoucherCodes.co.uk.
35 per cent of Android users have said that they are considering abandoning the operating system for the more mainstream option when they next upgrade.
Wireless charging and a longer battery life are two of the most important things for fans of the iPhone. The device has a history of bad batteries, and the introduction of the new lightning connector upset fans who were used to the older connection.
So improvements on these aspects will help them significantly grow their fan base.
VoucherCodes.co.uk has also revealed that shopping traffic to its site from an iPhone is nine times higher than from a Samsung Galaxy since the start of this year.

UK mobile network providers are waiting on Apple to release UK pricing details of its new iPhone 5C and 5S models, following the devicesā reveal yesterday.
American prices for both phones were announced by Apple at the press event. The 5S will cost from $199 (Ā£123) for 16GB of storage to $399 (Ā£254) for 64GB, on a two-year contract. Without a contract, the 5S will cost between $649 (Ā£549) and $849 (Ā£709).
The 5C, which will not be available off-contract, will cost either $99 (Ā£63) for 16GB or $199 (Ā£127) for 32GB on a two-year contract.
UK networks are waiting to hear from Apple on the deals and prices they will be available to offer to customers when the 5C goes on preorder this Friday (September 13th). The 5S wonāt be available to preorder at all, releasing alongside the 5C on September 20th.
āApple is very cloak and dagger about it all,ā said one sales representative from mobile network Three.
Three, O2, Vodafone and EE all stated that details about 5C and 5S contracts would be come in towards the end of the week, likely to arrive on Friday in time for customers to place preorders for the 5C.
āItās going to be hectic,ā said the Three employee about the release.
Even Appleās own stores are waiting to hear from their American parent.
āWeāll know contracts and details once the phones come in,ā one Apple Store employee said. āNothing before then.ā

Nowadays, it seems like everyone has a plan to help you part ways with a smartphone in return for some sort of store credit or, in a few cases, cash. Apple's doing it.GameStop's doing it. Amazon's doing it. You get the point. Starting on September 21st in the US, we'll be adding giant retailer Walmart to the list of companies currently offering a way to trade-in smartphones. The newfound program, powered by CExchange, is slated to be open in over 3,600 stores across the country (including Sam's Club locations); Walmart says its program will offer customers instant credit which can then be applied towards a shiny new handset. Obviously, the value will depend on the device's overall condition, so don't expect to get too much for thatshattered iPhone you've been rocking the past few months.

And then there were two. Apple has for the first time announced a second new iPhone model: the iPhone 5c. As rumored, the device has a colorful new polycarbonate design, which Apple says is made from a single part save the front panel -- the whole of which is a multitouch surface -- and reinforced with a steel structure that's said to be made using a new construction method. It's "beautifully, unapologetically plastic," according to Apple's Jony Ive.
As for specs, you'll get the same 4-inch Retina display as the iPhone 5 (full sRGB), plus an A6 processor, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi connectivity, a higher capacity batter and an 8-megapixel, backside-illuminated camera with a 5-element lens. A new front-facing camera also promises better performance in low light.
Available in blue, white, pink, yellow and green, the 5C will set you back $99 on a two-year contract for the 16GB version, or $199 for the 32GB (off-contract options run $549 and $649). Those looking for a bit of added protection can also opt for one of the new cases that Apple has designed to match the phone -- they'll set you back $29 apiece. Pre-orders will open up on September 13th, with the phone set to ship alongside the iPhone 5s a week later on September 20th.

Ladies and gentleman, the moment you've all been waiting for. As expected, this afternoon's day-brightening news (or part of it, at least) arrived in Cupertino in the form of a brand-new handset. CEO Tim Cook took to the stage at Apple HQ to introduce the world to the iPhone 5s (lowercase "s," mind), the second of two handsets announced today. The new phone follows the number- / letter-naming scheme set in place way back in twenty 'o nine with the introduction of the 3GS and carried on with 2011's 4S. As with those handsets, the new device's name implies that this round is something of an iterative update to last year's iPhone 5. According to Phil Schiller, the handset is "the most forward-thinking phone we've ever created." As expected, it's set to arrive in three colors: black, silver and gold. The 5s is crafted in high-grade aluminum with chamfered edges.
What the the "s" stand for? Well, inside, you'll find a 64-bit A7 processor that features twice the number of transistors as its predecessor, clocking in at more than 1 billion, according to Schiller -- the CPU and GPU, meanwhile, promise speeds twice as fast. There's OpenGL ES 3.0 on board, but the next-gen handset still promises, thankfully, to remain compatible with the 32-bit apps of yesteryear. The 5s also rocks the new M7, which monitors motion data in real-time, with help from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass -- a feature that'll work nicely with fitness apps like the new Nike+ Move.
