The case for an incoming Kindle Fire update seems to be getting stronger every day -- not only have we seen benchmarks and alleged photos of the device, but now @evleaks seems to have come across an official render. The purported press image matches previous leaks in bezel size and design, but lacks the front-facing camera Amazon introduced with the Kindle Fire HD. This leads us to suspect that the render is of a non-HD model of Bezos' latest tablet. The flagship model is rumored to have a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, the aforementioned camera upfront and an OS based on Android 4.2.2. We're still waiting for Amazon to give the official word of course, but for Kindle users waiting for an upgrade, it's something to salivate over.

Crowdfunding platform Kickstarter has conducted a "full investigation" into the notorious Ouya game Gridiron Thunder but found no wrongdoing, according to a representative at the game's developer.
Gridiron Thunder is suspected to have raised its funds on Kickstarter though unconventional means - in that the football game has made $171,009 on Kickstarter from just 183 backers, representing an average of nearly $1000 from each person.
Further doubts were raised when it was discovered that Gridiron Thunder has also successfully applied to the Ouya Free The Games Fund - an initiative which doubles the investment of any Kickstarter game in exchange for six months of exclusivity.
The Ouya initiative can theoretically be exploited, critics say, allowing Kickstarter projects to double their money if they reach certain funding goals.
One project that appears to have attempted this (called Elementary, My Dear Holmes) was suspended by Kickstarter before the funds were released. That game managed to raise nearly $60,000 from 861 people (around $70 per person), some of which were proven to be fictional.
But developers at Gridiron Thunder are talking down the same outcome for their controversial project. Andrew Won, the chief executive at developer MogoTXT, said the game is already set for release on Ouya.
Speaking to Joystiq, he added: "Kickstarter conducted a full investigation and found nothing wrong with our campaign. This is conclusive and our campaign came to a successful close last Sunday."
He added: "I've answered the same question many times and I have nothing more to add. There is nothing left to discuss."

Translated from Der Spiegel: Hamburg Data-Protection Specialist Johannes Caspar warns against using iPhone 5S's new Fingerprint ID function. 'The biometric features of your body, like your fingerprints, cannot be erased or deleted. They stay with you until the end of your life and stay constant — they cannot be changed. One should thus avoid using biometric ID technologies for non-vital or casual everyday uses like turning on a smartphone. This is especially true if a biometric ID, like your fingerprint, is stored in a data file on the electronic device you are using.' Caspar finds Apple's argument that 'your fingerprint is only stored on the iPhone, never transmitted over the network' weak and misleading. 'The average iPhone user is not capable of checking, on a technical level, what happens to his or her fingerprint once it is on the iPhone. He or she cannot tell with any certainty or ease what kind of private data applications downloaded onto the iPhone can or cannot access. The recent disclosure of spying programs like Prism makes it riskier than ever before to share important personal data with electronic devices.' Caspar adds: 'As a matter of principle, one should never hand over any biometric data when it isn't strictly needed. Handing over a non-changeable biometric feature like a fingerprint for no better reason than that it provides 'some convenience' in everyday use, is ill advised and foolish. One must always be extremely cautious where and for what reasons one hands over biometric features.'"

The Windows Phone Store might not be as big as Apple's App Store or Google Play, but Redmond claims it's showing decent growth. According to WP Store General Manager Todd Brix, the platform has surpassed 9 million transactions of combined app and in-app purchases per day. That's a total of 270 million per month, or 70 million more thanwhat was reported in June. Ballmer and Co. want those numbers to grow even more, of course, so they've streamlined payments from carriers, making sure they're eligible for payout after 30 days. While that might entice more devs to dip their toes in the platform, you'll first be seeing more ads than new apps -- the company will start issuing unique device IDs to new advertising partners. It claims the UDIDs aren't linked to particular devices and won't give out identifiable information, but if you still feel unsafe or don't want to be served targeted ads, you can always opt out.

Perhaps influencing Microsoft's $7.2 billion acquisition, the New York Times is reporting that Nokia had an Android phone in development. From the article, 'A team within Nokia had Android up and running on the company's Lumia handsets well before Microsoft and Nokia began negotiating Microsoft's $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone and services business, according to two people briefed on the effort who declined to be identified because the project was confidential. Microsoft executives were aware of the existence of the project, these people said.' Perhaps Nokia feared they had put too many eggs in one basket? Whatever the case, the project is most likely dead at this point.

New submitter Lord_Breetai sends word that a Louisiana high school student has been arrested for using a mobile app to simulate shooting his classmates. The app overlays an FPS-style gun and UI over a real background seen through the device's camera. The student tried it out and then unwisely posted a video of it on YouTube. Another student's parent saw the video and reported it to authorities. Major Wolfe of the local police said, "You can't ignore it. We don't know at what time that game becomes reality. He said it was a result of him being frustrated and tired of being bullied. He said that he had no intentions of hurting anybody. We have to take all threats seriously and we have no way of knowing that without investigating and getting to the bottom of it. With all the school shooting we've had in the United States, it's just not a very good game to be playing at this time." The boy is now facing criminal charges for terrorizing and interference of the operation of a school.

Apple is ready to start taking your money for the iPhone 5c in all its multi-hued glory. You can hit the Apple Store to order one on a two year contract through Sprint, AT&Tand Verizon for $99 (16GB) and $199 (32GB). It can also be pre-ordered from all those carriers directly (see the links above) at the the same prices, and if unlocked is more your thing, a contract-free version is available through T-Mobile for $549 (16GB) and $649 (32GB). Pre-orders have also opened across ten other countries, like Canada and the UK, where the sun has already risen on Friday the 13th. They'll start shipping out on September 20th, the same day the iPhone 5s hits stores. A bit more than some thought they'd be, but you can't put a price on being first, right?
Update: Apple's store is now up, and it looks like you can also pre-order from T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon at the links above. Other international carriers are also taking orders; we've rounded up a few at the More Coverage link after the break.

Microsoft officially acquired Nokia's devices group to improve the overall Windows Phone platform. The New York Times, however, hears from sources that the company may have had another incentive: Nokia had been testing Android on Lumia devices. The Finnish firm reportedly started experimenting with Android "well before" the deal, making it easier to switch platforms if the Microsoft partnership didn't last beyond 2014. Nokia's potential OS switch wasn't mentioned in the acquisition discussions this year, according to one tipster. Even so, the sources claim that Microsoft's executives knew of the project's existence -- they would have understood the consequences of losing Nokia's support. Microsoft and Nokia have so far declined to comment on the rumor, but it's clear that any Android-based Lumias are now consigned to the history books.

Halo's female computer will inform identity of Siri-like voice recognition technology
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft is developing a voice technology to compete with Apple's Siri and Google Now, and, in a nod to Halo, it will be branded "Cortana."
According to report on Zdnet, which is just one of many sites claiming to have evidence of its existence, the Cortana app will function in a similar manner to Siri. As such, using the name of Halo's advanced, learning AI makes sense. The app will evolve and change with use, just as Cortana does in Bungie's popular franchise.
Zdnet's sources indicate that Cortana will be a central feature of Microsoft's strategy for Windows Phone in the future. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO, has referred to the development of AI voice technology frequently over the last few years, includinga memo from July, as the company prepared for its internal re-organisation.
"Our UI will be deeply personalized, based on the advanced, almost magical, intelligence in our cloud that learns more and more over time about people and the world. Our shell will natively support all of our essential services, and will be great at responding seamlessly to what people ask for, and even anticipating what they need before they ask for it."
Despite struggling to make much progress in gaining ground on iOS and Android, Microsoft's resolve to make its Windows Phone platform work remains undiminished. At the start of this month, it bought long-time partner Nokia's Devices and Services business for $7.2 billion.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes says it's not just because Apple likes bragging about being first and because a 64-bit processor sounds cooler than 32-bits that Apple used the 64-bit A7 chip in the new iPhone 5s. A shift from a 32-bit processor to a 64-bit part paves the way for iPhones to be fitted out with 4GB+ of RAM down the line, but more importantly the move brings iOS and OS X apps much closer. The architecture for 64-bit apps on iOS will be almost identical to the architecture for OS X apps, making it easy to create a common code base that runs in both operating systems. 'Apple has slowly been bringing iOS-like features to Mac OS for years now: think of Launchpad and Gatekeeper,' writes Sascha Segan. 'The ultimate prize, of course, would be to bring the million-plus iOS apps to Macs. Apple could do that with an ARM-compatible virtual machine on Mac hardware, but it would want the VM, the OS and the associated apps to play nicely in the much larger memory space available on Macs. That means moving the whole system over to 64 bit.' By unifying iOS and Mac OS with Xcode developer tools in a 64-bit space, Apple could once again leap ahead of Microsoft and Google, says Segan. Microsoft hasn't yet been able to leverage its desktop strengths to achieve success as a mobile OS. The 64-bit chips for Android devices aren't ready, and neither is Android itself.

September 13th, 2013, 22:40 Posted By: wraggster
The UK’s mobile operators have announced their price plans for Apple’s new entry-level iPhone 5C.
As always, there’s a vast array of options that see you paying anything from nothing to £600 up front as well as the monthly payment plan.
EE is offering the 16GB version of the phone for just £9.99 up front if you commit to a 24-month £51 plan. The plan can be reduced to as little as £26 if you’re willing to pay £189.99 for the handset.
These prices increase considerably for the 12 month plans, with the cheapest tariff jumping to £41 with an up front fee of £439.99. The cheapest up front fee is £259.99 on the £66 per month tariff.
Make the jump to the 32GB iPhone 5C and you’ll see between £50 and £80 added to the handset cost.
Vodafone’s 24-month plans offer a free handset on its £47 and £52 a month contracts although its 12-month deals see the up front handset costs start at £109. This jumps to £149 for the 32GB version on its 12-month deal or £19 on a 24-month contract.
3 is asking for £49 up front for the phone across three different tariffs starting at £37 per month. Its 12-month deals add a fiver to each of its monthly payment plans.
O2’s Refresh plans are a little more confusing. For the 16GB model airtime plans come in at between £12 and £27 per month but users then face an array phone plan charges including a £600 up front cost or nothing up front and an additional £25 per month – plus a multitude of options in between.
These prices are all obviously increased for the 32GB version.
The UK networks have not yet revealed their iPhone 5S pricing. Both handsets will be released in the UK on September 20th.

Over at Scripting News, Dave Winer has a hobbyist phone on his wish list. Innovative phone manufacturers, Winer suggests, should 'make a smart phone with a really great scripting language, with all kinds of scriptable tools on board. Instead of disallowing scripting, disallow apps that can't be scripted. Make a great simple programming environment that runs on desktops or laptops that plugs right in, but it should also be easy to write scripts on the phone itself. Dave concludes, 'We've already seen the Jobs phone. Now it's time for Woz's.' Having ditched App Inventor, it would appear that Google isn't interested. Microsoft Research has the idea, if not the right implementation, with TouchDevelop (). Any other existing or in-the-works projects that might fit the bill?"

With apps designed to 'revolutionise the way people find sexual partners,' it stands to reason that people may feel slightly nervous when their partner's phone vibrates.
Comparison site www.mobilephonechecker.co.uk has found that men in the UK are twice as likely to snoop through their partner's mobile than women.
The survey of more than 2,000 Brits that are in relationships found that 62 per cent of men have dug around their partner's device, falling to 34 per cent for women.
89 per cent had done so to find out whether their significant other had been talking to anyone else sexually, while 52 per cent know their partner's passcode so that they can snoop around their handset.
48 per cent of snoopers admitted to finding incriminating evidence, which arrived as texts and Facebook messages at 53 per cent and 42 per cent respectively.
Interestingly, 59 per cent of women would confront their other half if they found proof of cheating, while just 37 per cent of mean would broach the subject.
31 per cent of people would consider ending the relationship if they discovered a partner had been looking through their mobile phone.
Meanwhile, 36 per cent claim they would never allow a partner to go through their mobile phone without their knowledge and 29 per cent of respondents keep mobile phones with them at all times to avoid the possibility of a ‘snooping’ situation.

The Xperia Tablet Z already boasts strong water resistance credentials, but Sony's decided that there's an under-served market of chefs that needs exploiting. That's why the company has launched a "Kitchen Edition" of the slate, aimed at nerds who know what a ramekin is. Unlike the regular version, this bork-tastic device comes with a book-style stand, pre-loaded recipes from Saveur magazine and an iGrill digital wireless meat thermometer. Priced at $650 with 32GB storage, there's no word on if the hardware will double as a chopping board, but given how sturdy Sony's hardware normally is...

If you think that the iPhone 5c and 5s are a little too pricey, we've got good news: Walmart plans to sell both Apple smartphones at a discount from the very start. The 16GB iPhone 5c will sell for $79 on contract, or $20 less than the official price, while the 16GB iPhone 5s will be available for $189. As elsewhere, pre-orders for the 5c will start on September 13th; both of the new iPhones will ship on the 20th. Don't like contracts? You're not left out of the bargains -- Walmart plans to slash $100 off the prices of Straight Talk's iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 variants, which will respectively cost $349 and $549 as of September 14th. The savings are small when compared to the service fees you'll pay over a few years, but it's hard to object to having a little more money left in your pocket.

Title originally set for FF XIII universe to be released on smartphones
Square Enix has unveiled Final Fantasy Agito, a mobile-bound RPG with multiplayer and free to play elements.
In a Famitsu preview translated by Polygon, producer Hajime Tabata revealed the game will land later this year for both iOS and Android devices.
Set within the world of 2011 PSP Japan release Final Fantasy Type-0, the game centers around retelling the story from the aforementioned portable title from the perspective of new characters. Players assume the role of a customizable character that is a student candidate at the same magic academy in FF Type-0.
"I wanted to write a story that traced the different fates of the FF Type-0 heroes," producer Hajime Tabata said.
"A lot of FF Type-0 players have told us that, and there are a lot of people within the studio, too, who wanted to do it. FF Type-0 was originally meant for release on mobile phones, and I liked the Agito name anyway, so that's how we got started with this project."
Tabata also assured fans that Agito will be fun regardless of whether or not they put money into the free to play elements.
"[We want] you to be able to reach the ending fully free-to-play. I don't buy extra stuff in games, after all. The 'active force' you consume in missions refills over time, but you can refill it instantly with an item if you want to play at once. You can also spin to purchase abilities, continues for when you fail at a mission, and most of the other things you'd expect."

The portable games console went from paper to production in nine months thanks to Kickstarter.
GameStick will be the first completely mobile games console that plugs directly into the HDMI slot of a TV without any wires or bulky consoles.
Thanks to funding, the idea of GameStick was taken from paper to production in just nine months and is now confirmed to go on-sale Tuesday 29th October.
The Android powered gaming system’s release was initially planned for back in June, however PlayJam wanted to offer the product to those who backed it on Kickstarter before it hit the shelves.
Investors of the project consisted of GameStop, Adobe, Endeavour Ventures, London Venture Partners plus a number of games industry leaders, all of whom obviously have faith in its success.
It can be pre-ordered from selected retailers such as GAME and Amazon who will all partner the launch in Canada, Europe and the Middle East.
Jasper Smith, CEO of JamStar, said: “The challenge of bringing affordable gaming to the big screen has always sat at the heart of everything we do and GameStick represents a huge step forward in reaching that goal.”
The mini-console benefits from an Amlogic 8726-MX processor, has 8GB of flash memory plus a content download manager with cloud storage.
It is powered by Android Jelly Bean and connects controller to screen with Bluetooth 4.0.
Android powered games console rumours and realities have been circulating for a while now, with one apparently coming from Amazon, Google were thought to be developing one, and of course the Ouya which was release last year.
Developer of the GameStick, PlayJam has delivered over one billion games via Pay and Smart TV networks in more than 120 countries, and is partnered with leading manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic.
The hardware will be priced at $79.99 in the US and £79.99 in the UK, and games will be priced accordingly on its online store which can be connected to via Wi-Fi.
