If $20 was too high an asking price for the iOS serving of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, good news: the game's currently half price, at just $10. What's better is that it's just received an update as well, which adds multiplayer functionality, iOS 7 optimization, and deeper leaderboard stats. We'd personally suggest playing the game on an iPad, and we'd also suggest setting aside a fair share of your upcoming free time. And maybe some of your occupied time. What we're trying to say is "be concerned about the next few weeks after buying XCOM."

As things often go with such products, the Unu tablet/game console/home entertainment center combo is a bit delayed. The Android device, which was originally scheduled to ship this summer, is now set to hit select retailers and online stores beginning next month. We spent some time with the device earlier this year at E3, and while the concept here isn't entirely unique, the execution seemed compelling enough. There's a 1,280 x 800-pixel 7-inch display, 2MP and 5MP cameras, 1GB RAM, 8 gigs of flash storage, HDMI output, 2 USB ports and support for up to 64GB microSD cards on board the Jelly Bean-powered slate. Pricing is set at $200 for the Media Edition, which includes a docking station and an air mouse controller with keyboard, and $250 for the Gaming Edition, which adds a game controller, making the Unu rig affordable enough to have broad appeal. Check it out in our E3-era hands-on after the break, and if you like what you see, you can place a pre-order at select e-tailers via the source link below.

Apple will reportedly unveil a pair of new iPad products later this month.
The firm will reveal the fifth generation iPad and second generation iPad mini as part of an October 22nd event, according to an AllThingsD report citing multiple sources.
The iPad 5 will apparently be thinner and lighter than past models, include an improved camera, and is rumoured to carry Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip.
iPad mini 2 is said to boast a retina display, along with the A7 chip.
Sources also claim announcements for the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks will be part of the festivities as well.
If the report is accurate, expect Apple to have the devices out in time for the holiday season. The company launched the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini last November – just a few weeks afterrevealing the products.

Square Enix will release a modified version of its classic RPG Final Fantasy VI this winter for iOS and Android devices.
Producer Takashi Tokita told Kotaku the game won’t be a straight port, packing sharpened 2D graphics and other improvements.
"It is basically like a remake of the original VI, but there have been some enhancements,” Tokita said. “The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same.”
“For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."
The game was originally released in North America on the Super Nintendo as Final Fantasy III.
Takita also noted that titles such as Final Fantasy VII could make it out on mobile devices as part of Square Enix’s legacy series, which is currently focused on porting Final Fantasy: The After Years to mobile devices.
"We are aware that we have tons of VII fans," he said.
"We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

October 10th, 2013, 23:18 Posted By: wraggster
Symantec's 2013 report has found that British consumers are still throwing caution to the wind when it comes to securing their mobiles, despite the fact they're almost always in use.
The study shows that 45 per cent of smartphone and tablet users sleep with their devices, but 54 per cent of people aren't even aware mobile security software exists. 48 per cent don't even use basic protection, such as passwords.
Despite this, the cost of cybercrime in the UK has dropped from ÂŁ1.8 billion in 2012 to ÂŁ826 million this year, with cost per victim falling from ÂŁ144 to ÂŁ101, but people are still playing with fire.
48 per cent of social networkers don't log out after their sessions and 32 per cent share passwords with others, while 31 per cent said the ease of constant connectivity outweighs the danger of hacks and fraud.
Marian Merritt, internet safety advocate, Symantec, said: "If this was a test, mobile consumers would be failing. While consumers are protecting their computers, there is a general lack of awareness to safeguard their smartphones and tablets. It’s as if they have alarm systems for their homes, but they’re leaving their cars unlocked with the windows wide open."

Hidden within Fujitsu's autumn lineup for Japan was another waterproof tablet, but this one had something a little different -- an extractor fan that survives underwater. The 12.5-inch QH77/M will need it, because it runs on Intel's 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U processor, which (nearly always) requires a degree of cooling. The fan will halt when the tablet is submerged, apparently, although our allies at Engadget Japanese, asking the questions that count, posited whether the fan offered enough thrust to move the tablet "like a submarine," if left to whir away. Fujitsu's spokesman said that they tested that themselves -- like any discerning company should. Unfortunately, the tablet is "too heavy" to move along the depths of the ocean your bathtub.

Samsung's recent foray into flip-phones with the Hennessy and Golden is no joke, judging by a new model leaked from China's Tenaa certification body. The SM-W2014 features the latest Snapdragon 800 processor and an ample 2GB of RAM to go along with its dual 3.67-inch, 800 x 480 Super AMOLED displays. There's also a 13-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, 802.11ac WiFi and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Now that you've digested all that, don't get too excited about a retro fling -- like it's sibling devices, the brassy-looking model is probably bound for China only.

Firefox OS is unquestionably a work in progress, but with a point upgrade a few weeks after launch (and the release of the ZTE Open), at least we can confirm that Mozilla is, in fact, putting the work in. The 1.1 version of the software is available now for users of the mobile operating system, featuring a number of enhancements. At the top of the list is the arrival of MMS support, letting you send and receive images, audio and video files and the like via messages. Performance has also been enhanced, with smoother scrolling and faster load times. There's music search built in now, too, plus an API for push notifications for app developers. All that, plus improvements to email, contact management, calendar and keyboard. If you want to drill down on any of the above, have a look at the source link below.

That was fast -- just days after a retailer's leak, Archos has announced the GamePad 2. As hinted earlier, the second-generation gaming tablet is a big improvement over the original. The 7-inch slate is now better-suited to modern games through its sharper 1,280 x 800 IPS display, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip and 2GB of RAM. Archos has also improved the control responsiveness, upgraded to Android 4.2 and stuffed in a bigger battery for extended play sessions. The GamePad 2 reaches Europe by the end of October for €180 ($243), and will be available in the US sometime during the fourth quarter for $200.

Electronic Arts has been killing it with their mobile games recently, with such titles as The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Plants Vs. Zombies 2 helping to put the publisher high on mobile top download charts. Now, EA Mobile is preparing to launch two mobile games that may help continue this success by connecting with existing intellectual properties Dungeon Keeper and Dragon Age. The [a]list daily spoke with the producers of these games about the design and marketing strategy.
Dungeon Keeper for iOS and Android is based on the hit game created by Peter Molyneux's Bullfrog Productions back in 1997 for Electronic Arts. "We started looking at the war chest of EA IP and we stumbled across Dungeon Keeper," said senior producer Jeff Skalski. "It was almost a no-brainer instantly that this game was long overdue to come back."
The game gives you the perspective of being the bad guy controlling a dungeon and fighting off the waves of heroes looking to pillage your creation. The theme of the game is, essentially, "It's good to be bad," said Skalski. The game transitioned well to touch devices, with EA Mobile redesigning the game to bring back all the classic elements and characters, but redoing the interface for touch. "When you were playing it with a keyboard and mouse you had that Hand of Evil on the screen and smack your imps with the back of your hand," said Skalski. "Putting it on a touch device was just kind of perfect."

Fresh iPad expected along with more details on OS X Mavericks and the new Mac Pro
Apple is expected to hold another press conference to unveil its next iPad and plans for its Mac operating system in less than two weeks.
The company will hold its next invitation-only event on Tuesday, October 22nd, reports AllThingsD.
The focus of the event is expected to be the latest updates to its iPad line, the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks, the latter of which has been given a redesign by Apple design guru Jonathan Ive.
The fifth-generation iPad is assumed to have a thinner, lighter design akin to the iPad mini’s, and an improved camera. According to the site, it will run Apple’s new 64-bit A7 chip.
iPad mini is also getting an upgrade. The second-generation have a retina display and also likely see the A7 incorporated into its innards. However, it is unclear whether Apple’s new Touch ID fingerprint sensor that recently debuted on the iPhone 5S, will be included on the devices.
It’s unknown where the event will be held, but it is also thought that it will not the California Theatre in San Jose, where the iPad mini unveiling took place in 2012.

Consumers are not as aware of cyber attacks as they should be, and think that the price of security is too high.
Even though such a high number of smartphones remain unprotected, Juniper has found that nearly 1.3 billion mobile devices including smartphones, feature phones and tablets will have mobile security software installed by 2018.
Over the last few years, mobile malware has increased over the last two years.
Cyber criminals are starting to focus more on the mobile platform than PC across both enterprise and consumer segments.
By the end of this year, Trend Micro’s data reckons that there will be more than one million malwares within the market.
Within businesses, the implementation of security policies and security products as well as staff training may not be enough, considering the increase of BYOD (bring your own device) as a single policy or measure may not be enough to cover the shear number of devices.
However, steady consumer awareness paired with greater visibility of product adoption levels, resulted in service adoption druing 2012, leading to higher than expected service levels.

Did you a buy a new Nexus 7 and think to yourself, "Self, I'd really like Google to make a cover for this thing?" Well, consider your (not very lofty) dreams realized, because Google's done just that by offering smart cases for its refreshed tablet via the Play store. The molded microsuede cases come in four colors and do just what you'd expect them to do: protect your purchase and help it stand on its own. The covers are going for $50 each and can be pre-ordered now (ships tomorrow, the 9th) at the link below.http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/08/g...-smart-covers/

That little Android gaming box, the OUYA, might've only cost you $100, but that doesn't mean it's not getting treated to some post-launch updating like all your other game consoles. The next update brings the long-promised external storage functionality, albeit in closed beta form (sign up right here). That expands the console's puny 8GB of internal storage to, well, whatever you'd like. With games mostly coming in well below even 100MB though, you're probably not getting too close to the limit just yet (we aren't, anyway).
Beyond the storage beta, OUYA game pages are now able to embed video as well as screenshots. That means users have yet one more way to find out what a game plays like before jumping in -- something we'd suggest as many users as possible take advantage of before spending too much time playing less-than-delightful Android ports. The update, dubbed "Ogopogo," launches today; head below the break for the full list of additions, changes, and fixes.

If you think there's something wrong with the image above, you wouldn't be alone -- but it is, in fact, what it's supposed to look like. As you can tell, this may very well be the first Samsung device that takes advantage of the Korean manufacturer's flexible screen, as shown to us by notorious leakster @evleaks. If this is accurate, it's quite a bit different than the prototype we originally saw at CES this past January, which featured a flat display that drooped off on one side and was designed to show a ticker-like notification bar. The image above also shows what appears to be a Korean version of the rumored device, but we don't know for sure if it'll ever see the light of day in other countries. This also indicates that an upcoming launch may very well be close at hand. We'll update our post with more pictures if or when they come in.
Update: Another pic of the SM-G910S (the curved phone's rumored model number) has been added after the break. @evleaks has also mentioned that this is indeed going to be a Korean device.

AllThingsD seems to have some pretty solid sources within Apple's walls, as it was spot-on last month when it predicted the date of the iPhone event. Now, the publication is reporting that October 22nd is a date for all of us to circle on our virtual calendars -- provided we're interested in new iPads, Mac Pros and / or the upcoming OS X Mavericks. We haven't heard any official news of what Apple has up its sleeves, but we're pretty confident that it'll be a full show.

In August 2013, President Obama issued a veto to an import ban of the iPhone 4S after Samsung won several court battles against Apple claiming that the iPhone 4S violated several of Samsung's patents. A few months ago, Samsung was on the receiving end of a very similar case filed by Apple. The International Trade Commission decided that several of Samsung's phones (Transform, Acclaim, Indulge, and Intercept models) violated Apple's patents, and should face import bans. Despite the similarities between the two cases, the Obama administration today announced that it would not veto the International Trade Commission import ban against Samsung products. The move that could spark a trade dispute between the U.S. and South Korea."

The hackable console has 466 games as it gears up for European launch
The Ouya Microconsole now has over 25,000 registered developers, the company has announced.
The Kickstarter Android console launched in the US and UK four months ago, and already has 466 games available on its store page.
The console has faced its share of drama in its short history: some backers didn't receive their consoles on time, took criticism for having fairly low conversion rates, and a $1 million fund designed to attract exclusives by offering matching funds to Kickstarter campaigns turned into a PR fiasco when a number of projects involved in the scheme were accused of fraud.
Hopefully the worst is over, and now Ouya is gearing up for its European launch later this month.
Though Ouya says there are 25,000 developers registered for the console, it's unknown just how many of these are active; the microconsole is its own devkit, so anyone who owns the Ouya is potentially a developer.
