I don’t plan to buy a PS4 or Xbox One, because I already own the most vibrant game platforms out there right now. iOS games are cheaper, more immediate and they seek to satisfy quickly; increasingly, they reflect how we play games now – there’s an older generation of players who simply cannot take their TV hostage for hours on end for what is a solitary, almost selfish pursuit. There are countless weird, interesting, exciting, abstract games on the App Store, and most lie tragically underappreciated and undiscovered. Some have sold enough to keep their creator going for another few months, and a tiny, select few have gone through the stratosphere; iOS success stories are few and far between, sadly, but when they break through, they really break through. There are so many that haven’t, and it’s an ongoing tragedy. It continues to frustrate me that prodigiously talented, original thinkers like Simogo (creator of the daring Device 6, wonderful Year Walk and toe-tapping Beat Sneak Bandit) get so few column inches. Some games receive a little recognition, and earn decent money for their creators – games like Super Hexagon, Super Crate Box, Joe Danger Touch, Triple Town, Drop7 – but not as much as you might think. So why the lack of recognition in the games media? There’s still a lingering sense in some quarters that they’re not ‘proper’ games if they’re on mobile. More obviously, mobile games coverage doesn’t get much traffic. It’s a hard sell. I can look at Comscore right now and tell you, the loyal Edge reader, that our reviews of mobile games don’t get nearly as many pageviews as anything we cover on console or PC. And yet we’ll keep commissioning them; we believe in this strangely neglected slice of the game industry, especially when, for me personally, Xbox One and PS4 are doing so little to excite right now.

The Apple iMessage protocol has been shrouded in secrecy for years now, but a pair of security researchers have reverse-engineered the protocol [original analysis] and found that Apple controls the encryption key infrastructure for the system and therefore has the ability to read users' text messages–or decrypt them and hand them over at the order of a government agency. ... The researchers found that while that basic framework makes sense from a security point of view, there are a number of issues with the iMessage system. One major issue is that Apple itself controls the encryption key infrastructure use for iMessage, and has the keys for each individual user. The upshot of this is that Apple has the ability to read users' messages if it so chooses. The researchers who looked at iMessage, known as Pod2g and GG, said that there is no evidence that Apple is in fact reading users' iMessages, but it's possible that the company could. Users' AppleID passwords also are sent in clear text to the Apple servers.

The invitations sent out for a media event in San Francisco on 22nd October could be for one of two things, a new iPad or an apology for iOS7.
As we don’t think it will be the latter, it is expected that Apple will lift the curtain on the iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2, according to the Telegraph.
On the brightly coloured invitations it states: “We still have a lot to cover.”
And we couldn’t agree more – will the new iPad also have a fingerprint reader? Will it work better with the love-it-or-hate-it iOS7? Will there be an expensive colourful budget version? Whens the iPhone 6 out?
What we are pretty sure of is that the new tablet will feature a number of hardware upgrades, improved processors and even better front and back cameras.
How do we know this? Because that is what is always new on the ‘new’ devices.
What will be a welcomed improvement however is a thinner, lighter body - but that’s enough about me.
Keep your eye out for any inkling of a new device, as well as a new retina MacBook Pro which is also expected to be unveiled at the event.
In related new, Apple has cut orders of its iPhone 5C by a third.

EE may have rethought its contract plans, but it's also added a new option for those who don't want to commit to two years of bills. On top of the SIM-only pay-as-you-go options already available, the traditional PAYG handset model is launching on the network October 30th. All the LTE-friendly smartphones the carrier offers on its pay monthly plans will be up for grabs for an upfront fee, complete with PAYG SIM and 10GB of free data to use in the first 90 days, as long as you get involved before January 31st next year. Another transient deal for new PAYG customers which expires at the same time is the 2,014 free minutes bonanza that applies to EE, Orange and T-Mobile -- a top up of £10 each month in 2014 will get you 168 minutes gratis.
Joining EE's handset line-up to become the cheapest PAYG option at £130 is Alcatel's One Touch Idol S, which'll also be available on pay monthly plans. The second-cheapest handset will be Nokia's Lumia 625 at £150, but big spenders can opt for aniPhone 5s at £520 and other pricier options. There's a handy web portal (app coming soon) for topping up and buying data, text or call bundles, and any data package of 2GB or more will entitle you to "double speed" access, or up to 60 Mbps download speeds. Head past the break for all the pricing info in neat chart form.

We know that Google is fond of puzzles, and it may be using a few of them to tease the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat. Nestle's @KitKat Twitter account has posted two musical references (embedded after the break) that suggest the OS could appear on October 28th. The first, "everybody dance now," clearly points to C+C Music Factory -- originally known as The 28th Street Crew. The second hint may be an allusion to Michael Jackson's This Is It movie, which reached stores on (you guessed it) October 28th. Don't plan your schedule around that day, however, as there are a few reasons to doubt the timing. C+C Music Factory released its "Gonna Make You Sweat" single on October 18th, and the album version of This Is It reached the US on October 26th; if these are teasers of any sort, they're not especially obvious. Still, we're fast approaching the October 29th anniversary of the launches for both Android 4.2 and the Nexus 4 -- no matter what, Google is due for both new software and the hardware to match.

T-Mobile USA doesn't do anything by half measures, apparently -- it just launched four devices that address many of its budget- and data-conscious subscribers in one fell swoop. We'll break it down for you. To start, the company is now shipping its promisedAlcatel One Touch Evolve, a 4-inch Android smartphone that costs a mere $100 at full price. The handset's 4.5-inch cousin, the Fierce, will arrive on October 23rd for $164. Samsung will offer a rough parallel to these devices through its upcoming Galaxy Light. While there are no launch details for the Light so far, it will be one of T-Mobile's cheaper LTE phones thanks to its 4-inch WVGA screen and 5-megapixel camera. Wireless internet mavens will also want to look at Samsung's LTE Mobile HotSpot Pro, which is available now for $170. We can't guarantee that everyone will like the carrier's expanded lineup, but curious customers will find more details at the source links.

BlackBerry has taken out full-page advertisements in 30 major newspapers around the world to reassure customers that all is well at the company.
In the adverts, BlackBerry highlights its debt-free standing and informs consumers that: “One thing that will never change is our commitment to those of you who helped build BlackBerry into the most trusted tool for the world’s business professionals.”
Featured in newspapers such as The Telegraph and The Times, another part of the advert reads: "Yes, there is a lot of competition out there and we know that BlackBerry is not for everyone. That's OK. You have always known that BlackBerry is different, that BlackBerry can set you apart."
BlackBerry did admit that it is going through challenging times and said it was making the ‘difficult changes’ necessary to strengthen the company.
Last month the firm announced its plans to cut 4.500 jobs, cutting its workforce by 40 per cent. It also agreed to a £2.95 billion buyout offer from its largest shareholder, Fairfax.

Dave Feldman, in a blog posts, says that the problem Android faces is giving consumers too much choice. He cites several studies which state that consumers generally are unhappier when they have too much choice. 'Catering to all individual preferences creates a bloated, bland product. Not to mention a UI that’s impossible to navigate. Furthermore, people are notoriously bad at identifying what we want. And what we do want is influenced heavily by what we know — our expectations are constrained by our experience.' He then goes on to talk about Android fragmentation, app developer problems and bug issues. Finally he says the people who general prefer the choice Android provides are tinkers similar to gear heads who love tinkering with their car. 'I think many who extol Android’s flexibility fall into the tinkerer category, including some tech bloggers. They love all the ways they can customize their phones, not because they’re seeking some perfect setup, but because they can swap in a new launcher every week. That’s fun for them; but they’ve made the mistake of not understanding how their motivation differs from the rest of us.' Is choice really a problem for Android?"Whether it's a problem depends on what the goals are. Providing a satisfying experience to a bunch of tinkerers is a very different thing from providing a satisfying experience to the multitude of non-tinkerers who buy smartphones.

October 16th, 2013, 13:06 Posted By: wraggster
A new developer program will ensure the smooth running of apps on the update.
Windows has announced the update three to its phones, to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
The update comes after the IDC revealed that Windows Phone 8 operating system was the fastest growing in Q2 this year, with a 77.6 per cent year on year growth.
Plus, it secured a 9.2 per cent sales share in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK according to Kantar.
The update will include a new preview program which is available now for developers, helping them to ensure the smooth running of their apps on the improved software.
Windows announced the update on a blog post, stating that the three main goals it had in mind was to enable incredible new Windows Phone devices, enhance the platform with new capabilities for current users and partners and to improve overall quality.
A bigger start screen will be the most noticeable difference, which will include the ability to pin more tiles to it. This will allow users to pull all the contacts, apps and info that they use the most right to the forefront of the device for easy access.
The new driving mode will minimise distractions whilst driving by limiting the notifications delivered to the home screen including texts, calls and alerts.
Automatic replies can be set up to send to people who call and text while you are behind the wheel, letting them know you will get back to them soon.
New accessibility features include a suite of apps designed to make the phone easier to see, hear and use. A screen reader will make it easier for visually impaired users of the device to manage calls, contacts, send texts or emails, browse the web, make Skype and Lync calls and hear notifications.
Windows has packed a load of new nit-bits into the update three such as better storage management, useful ringtones, and improved Bluetooth.
The update will be available in the next few weeks and will continue over the coming months with timing depending on network and phone model.

In case you missed it, Sony's own smartphone-pairing wearable got a refresh earlier this year, and it's about ready to take America. The SmartWatch 2 launches today, and you can order one for yourself over at Sony's dedicated store. There's no camera, but there is a 1.6-inch "transflective" screen, compatibility with Gmail, Facebook, SMS, Twitter and easy NFC pairing with any smartphone running Android 4.0 or above. If you don't already have such a phone... well, look at that, both the waterproof Xperia Z1(HSPA+, $670) and the titanic Xperia Z Ultra (HSPA+: $649.99, LTE: $679.99) will also be up for grabs starting today. Both devices will go on sale in black, white and purple variants, although only the Z Ultra will offer LTE connectivity across the 900, 2100, 850, 1900 and 1700 bands. Waterproof or 4G-capable? Make your choice.

Angry Birds Go! (their emphasis, not ours) is the next big entry in the Angry Birdsfranchise, first teased back in June by the Finnish bird-flinging game company. The game takes the "universe" of Angry Birds and applies it to downhill cart racing; it'll even accept new karts in the form of telepods, the Skylanders-esque system first introduced in Angry Birds Star Wars 2.
As the teaser shows, players employ power-ups to take their birds, pigs, and otherAngry Birds characters past opponents on a variety of downhill courses. Beyond it being an entirely new genre for the Birds, the game looks dramatically prettier than other Angry Birds series entries. We'll get to see just how those fancy new graphics play out when the game arrives worldwide on December 11th for both iOS and Android devices (and we expect BB10 and WP8 too). Head below the break for the debut gameplay trailer.

Brits won't have to wait long to get their hands on the HTC One Max. Vodafone UKsays that it will be offering the gigantic smartphone this week as a carrier exclusive in the country; customers can pick it up for £49 if they're willing to subscribe to a £47 monthly plan. An unlocked version is also available, although it's not cheap at £600 ($958) for a 32GB model at MobileFun.co.uk. We expect pricing to come down as competition heats up, but HTC's massive handset currently demands an equally large premium.

Ouya has kicked off a closed beta period to test external storage device support for the $99 Android-based microconsole.
A post on the company's official website details the latest update for the hardware and explains the thinking behind running the external storage closed beta.
"It's a big feature and there are a ton of different types of external storage out there, so we felt it was best to roll it out in stages," the company states.
"The staged rollout allows us to easily gather feedback and achieve the best possible product in the end ... If this beta is successful, it can pave the way for us to try and introduce more features earlier in their lifecycle."
The first round of invites are set to be sent out this week, but those interested in participating still can sign-up through Ouya's website.
The console launched earlier this year and currently boasts over 470 games to try and/or buy.

Although it’s obviously not Connect 4 because that’s trademarked.
Perhaps Apple’s bizarre decision to cut loads of holes into its new range of iPhone 5C cases wasn’t so weird after all?
A new app called Flipcase uses Apple’s accessory to turn an iPhone 5C (or indeed any iPhone you can cram into the case) into an ideal portable not-Connect 4 set.
It’s best described in the video below. Users are required to flip the case back-to-front. You can play against the AI or pass the device between you and an opponent.

Argos has launched MyTablet – a £100 own-brand tablet set to compete with Tesco’s £119 Hudl.
The seven-inch tablet will come with pre-loaded games and apps, including Argos’ own shopping app, BBC iPlayer, Angry Birds, Facebook, Twitter and an e-reader app, and can be used for “internet browsing, TV, music, video streaming and social networking”.

The battery life is said to be up to five hours. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as well as HDMI and Micro USB ports.
“The device has been designed with families in mind offering all the functionality of a comprehensive tablet with built in parental controls for younger users,” said Argos in a statement.

Accessories for the next generation iPad and iPad Mini have appeared at a Chinese technology event.
Vendors showcased the products at the China Sourcing Fair: Electronics and Components.
Cases for the new iPad were said to be thinner, due to a reduced bezel around the edge of the tablet.
Meanwhile, accessories for the successor to the iPad Mini were interchangeable with the original, suggesting that any improvements are to be internal while the form factor remains the same.

Apple has limited production of the 5C from 300,000 to 150,000 per day, reports Chinese website Ctechcn.
The site claims the same inside sources that leaked photos of the iPhone 5S box days before Apple’s official announcement has revealed the figures, indicating that the budget version of the latest flagship iPhone isn’t selling as well as the tech firm predicted they would.
This news is in keeping with recent data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners that the iPhone 5S is outselling the iPhone 5C by more than two to one.
The data reveals that the 5S made up 64 per cent of iPhone sales since it launched in September, whereas the 5C only accounted for 27 per cent.
The iPhone 5C comes in a range of colours, a plastic case, a slighter larger battery than the iPhone 5 and an improved front-facing camera.
