You knew this day would come, Virgin Mobile fans, and now the highly sought afteriPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c are available for purchase at Virgin Mobile. Better yet, you're in for a rather nice discount, as Sprint's prepaid subsidiary is selling each of the phones outright for $100 less than you'd pay elsewhere. This puts the 16GB iPhone 5s at $550 and the 16GB iPhone 5c at $450. Each of these phones should be available for purchase either online or in a retail setting, but if you want to score an iPhone with larger storage (either 32GB or 64GB), you'll need to direct your browser to Virgin's website. With its surprisingly low pricing, perhaps Virgin Mobile is retraining its brainas well.

We're no fans of patent litigation, and we imagine German iPhone users weren't thrilled when Motorola shut down iOS push email in the nation. After numerous pieces of paperwork (and a $135 million bond) was put on the table, an interim decision has allowed Apple to offer the service while the issue is resolved in court. All Teutonic users need to do is activate "Fetch New Data" from the "Mail, Contacts and Calendars" settings pane and, when all of this is settled, hope that messy patent litigation can stop getting between us and our email.

It's little more than a rumor at this point, but stories of delays and shortages have beencirculating for about as long as mentions of an iPad mini with Retina display. Reutersspent the morning adding a bit more fuel to that proverbial fire with its own band of anonymous sources. The "people who work in the company's supply chain" confirmed that there have been issues bringing a higher res tablet to market -- issues that may, in fact, impede Cupertino's ability to capitalize on the ever-important holiday push.
The refreshed mini is still apparently set for an October release according to the aforementioned unnamed informants, but it "could be available in only limited quantities this year." As to what's actually causing said shortage, no can say for sure, though word is that Apple's own certification process around power consumption may have thrown a wrench in the proceedings.

Wondering how your old buddy Tesco is faring with the launch of its first branded bit of hardware, the £119 Hudl tablet? Well, according to Tesco's CEO Phil Clarke, via a tweet from Retail Week's Jennifer Creevy, not too shabby: the supermarket chain has offloaded about 35,000 of the devices over the past few days. We very much doubt the likes of Google and Amazon, which have never been forthcoming with early sales figures, will be threatened by the number, but it's surely not a bad start from a retailer that knows more about selling bread and milk than tablets. Incidentally, Amazon's just dropped the price of its soon to be last-gen 7-inch Fire HD to £119, matching that of the Hudl -- if you've got no ClubCard points to secure a discount, that is. We now have one of Tesco's tabs in our possession, so look out for the review. We're assessing the display by rewatching the entirety of Game of Thrones, however, so it might take a while.

OUYA, one of Kickstarter's more high-profile success stories, is looking to make more of an impact overseas. The company announced plans today for its massively funded Android mini-console to be available across a wider swath of European markets. According to a report on Gamasutra, deals with select distributors are already in place and consumers in both Western and Eastern Europe should see stock appear at retail outlets by the end of October. It's not yet known exactly which Eastern European countries will be privy to this retail expansion, but chances are, if you're living on the Western end, you're more than adequately covered.

The unu is an Android tablet, a smart TV and a gaming console at a competitive price, but is that enough to succeed?
The tablet market continues to grow at an amazing rate with recent IDC estimates putting it at an annual growth rate of over 27 percent, with 227 million tablets expected to ship in 2013. IDC expects the tablet market to grow by almost 80 percent over the next four years. The fourth quarter of this year will see more tablets shipped than PCs, and this will occur on an annual basis by 2015.
Apple's iPad continues to dominate the market (with new models expected to be introduced soon), but Samsung, Amazon, Google and others present a growing challenge. For the most part, though, the feature set of tablets is quite similar - a touchscreen, a variety of sensors, front and back cameras, and perhaps a slot for a memory expansion card or HDMI out in some cases.
One new entrant in the tablet market aims to shake up that model. German game peripherals maker Sunflex is introducing the unu tablet this fall as a combination of a tablet, a smart TV, and a gaming console. The [a]list daily spoke with Nicki Repenning, vice president of business development about the unu tablet.

Around 20m UK residents expected to get their paws on pads this year.
Tesco has spent the past few years pushing into the tech market. It opened the Tesco Mobile network, bought e-book firm Mobcast, launched Clubcard TV and more recently the Hudl tablet.
The latter went on sale on Monday, September 30th and the British supermarket will likely be pleased to hear eMarketer's claims that 20 million UK consumers will use a tablet this year.
The analyst claims adoption is becoming the norm and that growth has passed 'the early-adopter stage, with more than half of the UK population to use a tablet regularly by 2017.
These figures include people who own tablets and use them monthly, but also those sharing the devices with family, friends and so on.
eMarketer notes that the usage surge is due to cheaper models, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire and Tesco Hudl, offering alternatives to the expensive iPad.
Speaking of which, 59 per cent of Brits will use an iPad this year, but the growth rate will drop to single digits in 2014 and stay that way until 2017.
Meanwhile, the fastest age groups adopting the devices will be among those aged under 12 and over 65, while higher than average growth will also take place among those aged 12-17 and 55-64, with the bulk of tablet owners aged 25-54.

CBeebies Playtime extended to Microsoft OS just six weeks after iOS and Android launch.
The Beeb introduced the scholastic game-based CBeebies Playtime app in August, at which time it told MEthat while 'mobiles can educate kids, they shouldn't be used all day'.
A fair comment, of course, and the company has now extended the service beyond iOS and Android and over to Windows Phone 8. The app was built from cross-platform tools provider Unity, meaning a just a single codebase was used to make the expansion.
The WinPho launch comes at quite a good time. The OS's share of smartphone sales in the UK has risen from 4.5 per cent to 12 per cent over the past year.
Patrick Healy, head of product for children's at BBC Future Media, said: "Children’s media consumption habits are changing rapidly and it’s important for us to be able to reach them wherever they are."
The app uses all device features, such as touchscreen and accelerometer, to encourage kids interact with the content in the various ways they can't with TV or PC.
"The only way we can bring this content to new mobile audiences is through a new native app, which we’ve done for Windows Phone 8 users in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.
"Our strategy from the start of the CBeebies Playtime build was to use a single codebase which can be branched to target our required mobile platforms. Unity was the technology workflow used, allowing us to develop rich 2D and 3D game experiences that could scale.
"By using the single codebase workflow, we can add further games content and features to these platforms as needed, without the overhead of repeating major work for each platform. This allows us to efficiently maintain as synchronised an approach as possible to the releases in each app store."

Apple’s recently launched iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C have failed to beat the popularity of the older iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 in the UK.
The listing, which takes in search figures, sales and pre-orders, places the iPhone 5 at the top, with the iPhone 5S at number five and iPhone 5C at number 7.
Data collected by uSwitch also lists the most popular colour of iPhone 5C as green, and gold for the iPhone 5S.

Maplin has been announced as a stockist for Prestigio’s range of mobile devices, with the MultiPhone being the first smartphone that Maplin has sold.
With Prestigio’s MultiPad range already in store, the MultiPhone smartphone series will follow later this month.
The MultiPads available from Maplin feature Wi-Fi and 3G models and range from 8-inch at £99 to 10.1-inch at £169.
The MultiPhones are already available online from Maplin and include the MultiPhone 5430 with Intel Inside, launched by Prestigio in August.
"As the UK's biggest retailer of specialist consumer electronics, having Maplin as a stockist will greatly support our MultiPhone and MultiPad ranges. Both are increasing in popularity since their launch in the UK, and the fact that Maplin has never sold smartphones before is a huge testament to the quality of our products and our brand as a whole," said Martin MacNamara, UK sales director for Prestigio.

In the latest installment of Grand Theft Mobile (TM): Canadian phone thieves face a major hurdle now that several carriers in the country have launched a centralized blacklist of stolen devices. Canada's Protect Your Data initiative combines collections of pilfered gadgets' IMEIs -- a unique identifier that most phones have -- not only from each participating carrier in the country, but also from the US carriers' unified database. The joint effort will allow the companies to cross-check against everyone's rosters and refuse to activate any GSM, HSPA, HSPA+ or LTE device that appears in them. While only phones reported stolen or lost starting September 30th will automatically be listed, carriers have the option to add devices lost before that. While only phones reported stolen starting September 30th will automatically be listed, carriers have the option to add anything lost before that. It might not bring people's phones home, but at least those no-good snatchers will wish they'd stolen something simpler instead, like wallets, or cars.

In August Google pushed out an update to its Chrome Beta channel that included quicker access to search by image via a long press or right click along with a slew of other features. Today, version 30 of the browser is hitting the stable channel, along with its revamp of gestures for the Android version. Over the coming days, users will receive an update on their handsets and tablets that moves all the gestures to the toolbar: swipe down to open the tab switcher and flip through open tabs by running your finger left or right. Chrome 30 also includes a host of backend improvements and access to new APIs such as MediaSource and DeviceMotion, for better integration between webapps and your handheld hardware. For more details about all the changes to both the mobile and desktop versions of Chrome, hit up the source.

Here’s a handy hack for an Android controlled, Arduino driven, RGB light setup.
[Kerimil] recently wrote up this project on the Arduino.cc, and is sharing all of the source code and plans. While many of our seasoned Arduino-lovers can easily throw together the code for an RGB LED circuit in their sleep, [Kerimil] also threw in the Android app, and the source file to be modified in App Inventor, an Android app development program originally released by Google, but now maintained by MIT.
We’ve seen many commercial versions of this product, but it’s nice to see one that can be easily hacked to our liking. Next up is writing an app to use the phone’s camera to identify colors and reproduce them with the LED! While you’re at it, why not mix it with an easy to build infinity mirror!
To see the board and app in action, check out the video after the break.

The days of Apple making a mint from its proprietary iPhone charging cables could be over.
Macworld reports that members of the European Parliament’s internal market committee have voted unanimously for a law that would mandate the use of universal mobile phone chargers.
The idea is to cut down on electronic waste by making all radio equipment and their chargers universal, bringing an end to what German MEP Barbara Weiler described as “cable chaos”.
Apple had previously signed up to a voluntary 2009 EU agreement for all manufacturers to adopt the micro USB connector as standard but, as is evidenced by the recent release of the iPhone 5S and 5C, has clearly chosen not to fall in line with the regulations.
An iPhone 5 Lightning USB cable currently costs £25 direct from Apple. An equivalent 2M micro USB cable can be had for the princely sum of 99p on eBay, although you can stretch all the way up to a fiver if you’re feeling naughty.

And the Microsoft OS is just 0.7 per cent behind iOS in Germany.
It remains to be seen whether Microsoft's recent $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's mobile business will pay off or not, but the popularity of Windows Phone is undeniable, based on new smartphone sales figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
For the three months ending August 2013, Windows phone secured a 9.2 per cent sales share in the EU5 – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
The figures vary greatly across the markets in terms of growth, but the WinPho share rose from 4.5 per cent to 12 per cent year-on-year in the UK and from 5.6 per cent to 10.8 per cent in France. This marks the first time the OS has hit double digits in major markets.
Meanwhile, Windows Phone secured an 8.8 per cent share in Germany – up five per cent year-on-year – and it's catching up to iOS on a 9.5 per cent share – down 1.6 per cent year-on-year.
Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said: "Windows Phone’s latest wave of growth is being driven by Nokia’s expansion into the low and mid range market with the Lumia 520 and 620 handsets.
"These models are hitting the sweet spot with 16 to 24 year-olds and 35 to 49 year-olds, two key groups that look for a balance of price and functionality in their smartphone."
Android, however, is still the dominant force and has a 70.1 per cent share across Europe.
In terms of devices, Samsung leads with a 47.1 per cent share, which has dipped year-on-year as Sony and LG sales have grown. Apple sales are up two per cent, and Nokia sales have grown 0.9 per cent.
UK smartphone penetration is now at 67 per cent, and 85 per cent of devices sold in the three-month period were smartphones.
On a global scale, iOS sales rose 5.4 per cent year-on-year to hit 39.3 per cent. The Apple share is expected to grow, given that its new iPhone 5S and 5C handsets hit sales of nine million in the opening weekend.
Apple and Android are sales in Japan are almost neck and neck at 47.4 per cent and 48.6 per cent respectively, while Android sales in China are up nine per cent.
As for BlackBerry, who recently lost almost $1 billion in Q2, the OS has sales of just 2.4 per cent across the EU5 and 1.8 per cent in the US.

A number of users have complained that after updating their iPhone to iOS 7 they have encountered a number of issues with iMessage.
Users are reporting unsent and unreceived messages and some sent as SMS when they should have been iMessages. Others have complained that iMessages are not being converted to SMS to send to users on difference devices.
Members of Apple’s Support Communities forum have posted threads detailing a solution to the problem, with many reporting success with the method.
Disable iMessage in Settings -> Messages, reset the iPhone's Network Settings under Settings -> General -> Reset, then reenable iMessage.
This is not the first issue Apple’s latest iOS has encountered. When it first launched on September 18th many had trouble upgrading, with some receiving error messages and seeing incredibly slow download speeds.
A security flaw was also discovered which allowed anybody to bypass a passcode-locked iPhone by using iOS 7’s new ‘Control Centre’ from the lock screen.
