Anyone who's picked up an Ouya, or demoed one in-store, knows that the controller, with its sticky buttons and flimsy removable plates, could do with a lot of help. Company founder Julie Uhrman's aware of the issue and, in an interview withPolygon, she revealed that a new version of the Ouya controller is already on the production line. Taking the abundant consumer feedback into account, the company's phased out the old model and made some key fixes, including more secure triggers, improved thumbstick grips and buttons that (hopefully) don't get stuck in the controller's base. Whether or not you'll actually find one at retail is a bit of a crapshoot, however, as Uhrman said the packaging won't highlight the change. Uhrman also touched upon news of the Ouya 2, the release of which falls in line with previous reports of an annual update cycle. Specs for that next console haven't been finalized yet and, further, the company won't really be focusing on it until sometime in 2014. But when it does arrive next year, you can expect to see it receive an slight cosmetic update from designer Yves Behar.

"One aspect about the new OS X Mavericks release was that all Apple produced software was to be downloadable and updatable through the Mac App Store. However, this raises the obvious question: what happens to users who bought the software beforehand? Initial reports showed that the Mac App Store scanned your hard drive for software and offered to associate it with your Apple ID. The scans even found trial and pirated versions and upgraded those to fully-licensed versions. Even more interestingly, this is not a bug, and it appears Apple is turning a blind eye to the practice, giving away copies of iLife, iWork and Aperture to users who own trial or even pirated versions of the apps. Apple has also recently stopped providing downloadable trial versions of iLife, iWork and Aperture from their web site."

Mobile tech provider aims to give developers a ‘pain-free route to market’ with Marmalade Play
Marmalade has launched its own dedicated publishing division, Marmalade Play, to provide game developers with a “pain-free route to market”.
Marmalade Play will give participating developers access to support on quality assurance, monetisation, interface design and number of other areas, many of which are vital for shipping a polished title.
The company’s suite of mobile tools is also included, as are the technology and relationships to get developers’ games on to a wide range of app stores.
Marmalade has cemented the launch of Play with an agreement to publish a number of Activision-owed titles, the first two of which are The Activision Decathlon and Blur Overdrive.
Both titles will be available on Google Play later today and on Apple’s App Store from November 1st, with further platform versions to follow.
“Marmalade has been steadily growing its publishing activity over the past few years to bring well known and hit titles to multiple platforms and the widest range of players possible,” said Massimo Caporale, head of Marmalade Play.
“Today we underline this by bringing these amazing Activision titles to market at the same time as creating our new publishing division. We look forward to Marmalade Play further strengthening its position as a leading publisher of top class, cross-platform content.”
This publishing division is the latest step in the mobile middleware provider’s expanding enterprise, which includes its own in-house studio.

Uhrman says cloud gaming could enhance certain games for the microconsole
Cloud gaming could be a possible future for microconsole Ouya, according to the firm’s CEO Julie Uhrman.
Speaking to VentureBeat, Uhrman the console is capable of cloud gaming, and that company is open to the possibility of supporting it in future.
“There is absolutely a role for cloud gaming on Ouya,” Uhrman said.
“It would bring content to Ouya that our hardware may not support today, but that will play wonderfully – and were built to be played in the cloud.
“There are certain types of games where the idea of cloud gaming will work, but there are other types where it absolutely will not work. I think we think about it the right way and we're excited to test it out with some partners.”
Uhrman did not name who exactly the partners that will be providing cloud technology are, but said “all the ones that you're thinking”. Outside of Sony-owned Gaikai, those companies, such Kalydo provide cloud gaming servers of their own.
She added that the company is open to the notion of the Ouya storefront being available on other hardware.
“What's most valuable about Ouya is the community and our relationship between gamers and developers. And the Ouya storefront is [also] of great value.
“So, yes, if there is a partner product on the market with the exact same specifications - so there's no fragmentation for the developer - would I be open to putting the Ouya storefront on it? Absolutely. But what I don't want to do is fragment my audience of developers and make things harder for them.”

Indie puzzler Rose and Time returned to Ouya after the game was pulled from the store in September by its developer, Sophie Houlden. The "time-travel stealth" game was initially removed from Ouya's store during the height of thecontroversy surrounding the console manufacturer's Free the Games Fund, a program designed to match funds donated by crowdfunders for timed-exclusive Ouya games on Kickstarter.
In her latest blog, Houlden wrote that "at the time a lot of developers besides myself were upset at how the free the games fund was going and said so." Games like Gridiron Thunder, which received $171,009 on Kickstarter thanks to a handful of suspicious backers, and the Ouya-suspendedElementary, My Dear Holmes were the center of attention for the funding program's detractors. Ouya's response to the criticism at the time was to assert that the the Free the Games Fund would not be changed, prior to being overhauled a week later.
Addressing that decision, among other decisive missteps during a recent talk at the in Portland, Oregon, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman said the company "did not think about all the different ways people could take advantage of that kind of program," She later added that the Ouya team "didn't have enough rules around the program and people took advantage of it out the gate. So having the best intentions isn't always best. But you have to be quick to hear the feedback no matter how painful it is and iterate and change as you go."
As for Houlden's decision to bring Rose and Time back to the Ouya store, she wrote that "The Free the Games Fund was changed, none of the scam games received a single cent of the fund, the company admitted its mistakes, and was asking for yet more feedback to further improve things," concluding that she is "confident at this point that I can no longer justify keeping the game off the console."

The Ouya's brick and mortar retail presence will grow to include 1,800 Target locations, Ouya founder Julie Uhrman told Polygon. While the Ouya has existed within Target stores for some time, its availability has been limited to select locations, rather than every location, as will be the case now.
The Android microconsole's retail packaging has been spruced up to take advantage of its new-found exposure, Uhrman said. Target will push the device in its winter circular, through video adverts in its electronics departments and with special displays starting in December, though the Ouya's expanded availability goes into effect this month. Demo units are planned for early next year – Uhrman called production of the kiosks "incredibly expensive," a fact compounded by the necessity to design a wired controller for the system.
In related news, Ouya is also in the process of negotiating availability at Wal-mart. "I would expect something, us to announce something with them soon," Uhrman said.

With Gartner claiming Microsoft nibbled up just 3.3 percent of the smartphone market in Q2 this year, Nokia still has a long way to go to regain its mobile standing. Even with the handful of impressive products unveiled at Nokia World, Chris Weber, EVP of Sales and Marketing, agrees that there's still work to be done.
"I don't think there's a silver bullet," Weber said during an interview yesterday. "It's the portfolio, it's great marketing to make sure people are aware of the capabilities, and it's making sure that the apps are there."

Chinese state media is becoming quite the consumer advocate. Earlier this week, a bit on national TV berated Samsung over certain Galaxy S III and Note II handsets afflicted with the "sudden death" bug, as it has been called. While a firmware fixpromised to cure some devices, the root cause appeared to be due to a dodgy flash memory module, leaving some models without hope of a true elixir. In response to the public scolding, Samsung has issued a statement thanking the broadcaster for its report, also noting that its repair and refund policies are in full compliance with Chinese laws. The company offers anyone that's paid for a repair while under warranty to hit them up for a refund, and has now extended the warranty of any potentially affected device made before November 30th 2012 for an extra 12 months.
Earlier this year, Apple ended up massaging its warranty practices after the People's Daily proposed local coverage wasn't as robust as elsewhere. While Samsung was under scrutiny this time, it's clear both companies are keen on managing public perception. After all, attractive hardware ain't the only thing that'll make you successful in the world's biggest smartphone market.

AT&T's love of Samsung-made Windows Phones seemingly turned sour after it skipped last year's ATIV S. It's clear that any ill will was short-lived, however, as the carrier just unveiled its version of Samsung's ATIV S Neo. The Windows Phone 8 device is a close match for its Sprint counterpart, sharing the same 4.8-inch 720p screen, dual-core 1.4GHz processor, 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel front shooter. The launch price will be easier to swallow, though. AT&T plans to ship the ATIV S Neo on November 8th for $100 on contract, or $50 less than it cost at Sprint when brand new.

Noticing that your Windows Phone device is using more data than usual? You're not alone. As The Verge reports, Microsoft has confirmed that a recent backend change on Twitter's part has caused the built-in Twitter feature of Windows Phone to eat up data a far higher than expected rate; specifically, it's caused it to frequently re-download profile images. In an effort to fix the problem, Microsoft has made a change to sync Twitter accounts just once a day, but a fix will need to be implemented on Twitter's end to completely remedy the problem -- that, Microsoft says, will take a few more weeks. In the meantime, the only other alternative is to unlink your Twitter account from the device -- or accept the data charges.

Plants vs Zombies 2 has launched for Android devices, available now as a free download on the Google Play store.
To celebrate the platform release, which requires an Android 2.3 device or newer, PopCap has discounted the in-game Jalapeno item for the week.
The Android release arrives two months after the game's original launch on iOS – a fact that suddenly became under scrutiny, after EA's Frank Gibeau claimed the Android delay was due to a payoff from Apple.
Gibeau's comment was swiftly denied by Apple, and Popcap's Tony Leamer later explained to The A List Daily it was PopCap's typical development style that caused the launch date discrepancy.
“If you look at the way PopCap develops games, we start with one platform and get it right.”
Regardless, Plants vs Zombies 2 is now out on both major mobile platforms. EA and PopCap haven't officially mentioned any other platforms so far for the game, but (for what it's worth) the original PvZ eventually released on everything under the sun.

Veteran consultant and designer to evangelize console and boost conversion rates
Ouya has hired Tadhg Kelly as its new “free-to-play guy” in the hopes of improving monetization on the Android microconsole.
Kelly is well known throughout the industry as a columnist, consultant, and game designer, and relocated from his native Ireland a year ago to join the U.S.-based Jawfish Games.
This is an important step for Ouya, which requires a free-to-play version for all games even if it's just a demo, but has struggled to turn players into payers.
Kelly's job will mean working with second-party developers, advising on free-to-play strategies, helping to find new partners for the company through his industry connections, and being an all-around apologist for the hackable console model.
“Even though we’ve not worked together until now, I’ve always admired OUYA from afar,” wrote Kelly in and introductory post on the Ouya blog.
“Fundamentally I just like the idea of the underdog box that could launch 1000 amazing dreams. I love how, even though there’s been ups and downs, the sentiment of the OUYA has remained attached to that goal. Now that I’ve been able to peek behind the curtain and see some of the stuff that they’re working on, doubly so.”

Before today, the only way to enjoy BlackBerry's BB 10.2 OS was to buy the company's new Z30 flagship. But, as the company previously promised, that software update's ready to trickle down to all BB 10 users and should be hitting devices "starting this week." BlackBerry's said that the OS update won't be available from all carriers though, so depending on your wireless operator allegiance, you may or may not see that update notification. When it does arrive, Z10 and Q10 owners can look forward to the new BB Priority Hub which organizes your communications according to importance, message previews throughout the UI and lockscreen, and the ability to reply directly to BBM notifications. If you need some hand-holding for the update process, you can check out BlackBerry's how-to at the source link.

T-Mobile's plan to offer 200MB of free monthly data to iPad users was just the start of a larger strategy. As of November 1st, the no-charge bandwidth will be available for the lifetime of any tablet on the network; customers who pay for data will get the 200MB on top of their existing caps. The company is simultaneously launching a tablet trade-in program that will discount new devices when shoppers bring in old slates, even if they're WiFi-only.
To draw attention to its new initiative, T-Mobile has revealed that it will carry the LTE-ready Nexus 7 in-store on November 20th. Customers can get Google's tablet with no money down if they're willing to pay $16 per month for two years, or $384 in total. That's ultimately more expensive than purchasing through Google Play, but it may be easier to swallow for those who can't afford to buy the device outright.

"LG has launched the Fireweb Firefox OS smartphone in a joint event with the Telefonica Vivo carrier. The Fireweb Firefox OS smartphone will be available for around $200 and will join the Alcatel One Touch Fire which Telfonia is launching in Brazil, starting today. Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay are the next countries to get it. The Fireweb smartphone is LG's very first Firefox OS device and it increases the small number of OEMs that have released Firefox OS devices on the market. The smartphone has a 4-inch screen with a 480 x 320 display, a 1GHz Qualcomm processor and 4GB internal storage that can be expended with the microSD card slot by up to 32GB. It has a 5-megapixel cameras that comes with both autofocusing and an LED flash, which is a first for Firefox OS phones."Hopefully an OEM releases a Firefox OS phone with beefier hardware, but you can't argue with the price.

Intel Developer Blog: Softtalkblog looks at making Android apps for Intel architecture
I remember at Mobile World Congress a couple of years ago, Renee James, now President of Intel, said that Intel’s goal was that every platform should run most effectively on Intel hardware. That made sense to me: after all, people buy hardware to run software, so it’s important that the software works as well as possible.
I was reminded of this when I read this report on Intel Developer Zone, highlighting how Intel has been working on improving Android’s performance on Intel Architecture. At Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2013, Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai commended the work Intel has done on optimising the Android stack for performance on Intel.
Pichai noted Intel’s work in particular on the Linux kernel, open source libraries, Dalvik runtime, and the application development environment. Pichai also mentioned Beacon Mountain, which enables you to develop Android applications more quickly, as another important part of the puzzle.
There is work you can do to optimise the performance of your application, but the starting point has to be that the underlying hardware and software platform are working in close partnership, and as optimally as possible. That’s why Intel is one of the largest contributors to the Android project, ensuring that your software can benefit from a performance-optimised platform.
Have you tried running your Android software on Intel Architecture? Leave a comment below!
Find out more about developing Android apps for Intel Architecture here.
• This blog post is written by Softtalkblog, and is sponsored by the Intel Developer Zone, which helps you to develop, market and sell software and apps for prominent platforms and emerging technologies powered by Intel Architecture.
