For the first time in 11 years Apple has posted an annual decline in earnings.
Profits for its most recent financial year came in at $37bn, down from $42bn the year before. Revenue for the year hit $171bn, up from last yearâs $157bn.
Despite this, fourth quarter profit was ahead of analyst expectations at $7.5bn with iPhone unit sales climbing 26 per cent to 33.8m. Revenue for the quarter climbed year-on-year from $36bn to $38bn.
âWeâre pleased to report a strong finish to an amazing year with record fourth quarter revenue, including sales of almost 34m iPhones,â CEO Tim Cook stated.
"Weâre excited to go into the holidays with our new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, iOS 7, the new iPad mini with Retina Display and the incredibly thin and light iPad Air, new MacBook Pros, the radical new Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks and the next generation iWork and iLife apps for OS X and iOS.â

Apple's late 2013 edition iMacs are largely unchanged in external form, though they're upgraded in function with a revamped foundation that now pairs Intel's Haswell 4th Generation Core processors with NVIDIA's GeForce 700 Series graphics. The Cupertino company also outfitted these latest models with faster flash storage options, including support for PCI-E based storage, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology, all wrapped in a 21.5-inch (1920x1080) or 27-inch IPS displays with a 2560x1440 resolution. As configured, the 27-inch iMac reviewed here bolted through benchmarks with relative ease and posted especially solid figures in gaming tests, including a 3DMark 11 score of 3,068 in Windows 7 (via Boot Camp). Running Cinebench 11.5 in Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks also helped showcase the CPU and GPU combination. Storage benchmarks weren't nearly as impressive though, for iMacs based on standard spinning media. For real IO throughput, it's advisable to go with Apple's Flash storage options.

Almost a third of Samsung's Galaxy Gear Smartwatches sold are being returned, a leaked document has revealed, which shows that over 30 percent are being returned after sale at Best Buy locations in the US. The higher than expected return rate could be due to that realisation, with customers impulse buying and then realising that the smartwatch isn't everything it's cracked up to be."I'd like to hear from more people with smart watches who are happy with them, to better understand the appeal.

"A glitch in iOS7 has cost "a significant number" of Apple users their Wi-Fi access, according to ZDNet. But they also report that Apple is now censoring posts in their "Apple Support Communities" forums where users suggest possible responses to their loss of WiFi capabilities (including exercising their product warranty en masse). "We understand the desire to share experiences in your topic, 'Re: wifi greyed out after update to ios7,'" read one warning sent to Lawrence Lessig, "but because these posts are not allowed on our forums, we have removed it." Lessig â who co-founded Creative Commons (and was a board member of the Free Software Foundation) has been documenting the ongoing "comments slaughter" on his Twitter feed, drawing attention to what he says is the Borg-like behavior of Apple as a corporation. Lessig "is now part of an angry mob in Apple's forums who upgraded to iOS 7 and lost Wi-Fi connectivity," ZDNet notes, adding that as of this morning their reporter has been unable to obtain an official response from Apple."

Apple has revealed its new iPhone 5C and 5S devices, but has it done enough to impress? Andrew Wooden offers his views on the smartphones and asks if innovation is all itâs cracked up to be.
It's not the first Apple launch that has left people a little cold.
Outside the staunchest of Apple fanbase circles, which are usually as brand loyal as chief whips in Scientology sects, the most common reactions to Appleâs recent launch of the iPhone 5S and 5C ranged from âmehâ to âOMG itâs the same thing, I want something NEWâ.
Concentrating on the 5S (the 5C appearing to fill the far less interesting mid-range area on the market), the evident quality of the device, if the reviews are anything to go by, seems entirely irrelevant to an unfulfilled desire for more innovation from iPhones. You can see the sort of thing thatâs expected by observers from the sheer tonnage of erroneous rumour pieces and mocked up concepts. The guesswork surrounding new Apple products dominates the tech press for a good portion of the year.
Really this level of anticipatory froth couldnât be satiated with a phone at all. For everyone to go, âwow, well Apple really pulled it out of the bag this timeâ, Tim Cook would have to stand on stage and declare âwelcome to the future, assholesâ as the top of his head slid away, from which a glowing orb of tech would float out, firing beams of light in all directions and telepathically infusing the baying crowds with neurological contentment and the ability to contact anyone and access any piece of information with a thought.
Now that would get everyone excited.
But itâs not limited to the fanboys â recently this disillusionment seems to have extended to âinvestor concernâ over Tim Cookâs apparent lack of innovation.
But what does everyone want? The Samsung Galaxy S4, the iPhoneâs perennial rival, had lots of what might be called innovative features; for example, it would know when you were looking at the screen and pause videos if you glanced away. Most people I know understandably turned that kind of stuff off instantly.
The fingerprint reader is genuinely an innovative feature, and the 64-bit A7 processor has been praised, but thereâs still this undercurrent that itâs just the same thing as before â just another phone. But there are certain parameters that come with designing a phone, and if everyone agrees the last iteration was pretty much the best-in-class device, what are we asking for here? Gesture control? A pencil holder? A fold-out tripod? An extending umbrella? A tazer attachment? HAPPINESS?
Phones are basically computers now â and you wouldnât expect each new laptop to shatter the mould by being so radically different so full of functions youâd never considered in your wildest dreams, so INNOVATIVE, that you whoop and cheer the maverick CEO for his shrewd vision and design genius â reinventing the wheel 14 times a year.
Rather than some blind grasp for âinnovationâ, what would be most useful is a solution to the annoyances that already exist. There are two things that mainly annoy me about my iPhone â the battery runs out in about half an hour and the back is cracked because I dropped it (someone decided that making a chassis of glass was a good idea).
Praising unforeseen, game-changing features is natural. Lamenting a perceived absence of them every single time Apple hosts a press conference is less so. For my part, if Apple can double the battery life and I can find a more sturdy case, thatâs innovation enough for me.

Apple down creek without an iPaddle as tablet sales grind to a halt.
Apple announced that it had sold 33.8 million iPhones breaking September quarterly records, compared to the 26.9 million sold the same time last year.
However iPads have not experienced the same success, as limp from 14 million in 2012 to 14.1 million in Q4.
This could be an indication that the iPad has become too expensive in such a competitive market, filled with cheaper options that do pretty much the same thing.
Carphone Warehouseâs ÂŁ49 Avoca tablet has taken the lead as the cheapest ahead of Tecoâs Hudl and Argosâ MyTablet.
Or it could simply be that everyone has an iPad now - check out ME's 15 top reactions to the new iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display here.
Either way itâs not a good sign that Apple are losing ground in the tablet market which is becoming increasingly popular.
Q1 results from Strategy Analytics reported that tablet sales grew 117 year-on-year, and show no signs of slowing as time goes on.
Although overall quarterly revenue hit $37.5 billion with a net profit of $7.5 billion, compared to last years revenue, which came in at $36 billion, with 60 per cent of this year revenue coming from international sales.
Tim Cook, Appleâs CEO, said: âWeâre pleased to report a strong finish to an amazing year with a record fourth quarter revenue, including sales of almost 34 million iPhones.â
No comment on the frozen iPad sales then?
The Silicon Valley star has high expectations of the coming first quarter of 2014 with predicted revenues of between $55 and 58 billion, and a gross margin between 36.5 per cent and 37.5 per cent.

Xbox, Playstation and WiiU should watch their backs as more gamers go mobile.
Mobile gaming is the fastest growing segment of the video game market, as revenues are expected to double from $13.2 billion this year to $22 billion in 2015, reports Gartner.
It is thought that this rapid growth has been driven by global mobile sales, which CCS Insights predicted to hit 1.86 billion this year.
Not only that, but these devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated, offering progressively higher quality gaming experiences that arenât far off the quality of the high-end consoles.
These results have come as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo release their next-generation consoles, to a market that is possibly moving in a new direction when it comes to gaming.
The NDP Group recently reported that 53 per cent of kids a gaming more on a mobile now compared to a year ago.
Brian Blau, research director at Gartner, said: âAs mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) continue to grow, the mobile game category will show the biggest growth due to the entertainment value provided by games compared with other app categories.â
The gaming market overall is set to reach $93 billion, and is expected to hit a whopping $111,057 billion in 2015.
The result focus on video game consoles, handheld video games, mobile games, and PC games - with handhelds such as the PSP Vita and Nintendo 3DS and 2DS being the only sector predicted to decline from 18,064 this year to 12,399 in 2015.
A large portion of growth in mobile games has come from emerging markets, who are no longer replacing old PCâs with new ones, but with tablets, and have more access to smartphones than they do handheld games.
Not only that but mobile games are considerably cheaper than those in all other sectors of the market, making it more appealing.
Mr Blau continued: âMoving forward, game developers will need to constantly deliver compelling games as the growth of content and platform choices drives game players in divergent directions.â

Messaging service now has 80m active users overall.
Interest in BlackBerry devices has declined over the past couple of years, but last week's launch of BBM for Android and iPhone has now generated 20 million new active users.
With the app so popular, ME recently compiled a list of reactions to the messaging service's big return, with some people in favour of the comeback and others less enthused.
The company introduced a line-up system to avoid any risk of failure, following ten million downloads in the first 24 hours, but the queue has now been removed.
There are now more than 80m BBM users across BlackBerry, iPhone and Android globally, and the app ranked as the top free overall app in 35 countries in Google Play and in 107 countries in the App Store.
Andrew Bocking, EVP of BBM at BlackBerry, said: "It is great to see so many people downloadingBBM, but the true measurement for us is engagement â the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages.
"The power of BBM has always been the active, real conversations and interaction that our customers enjoy. From here on out, we will focus on active users of BBM and will no longer focus on simple download numbers."

A sampling of the rave reviews to date:

The early math skills the game imparts are linked to long-term academic and career success. Zorbitâs Math was developed to address the need for entertaining, top-quality early math education products and to ensure childrenâs first experiences with math are positive.
âZorbitâs Math helps children get ahead and stay ahead, plain and simple,â says Best Boy CEO, Ed Martin.

Android-owning sci-fi fans will be pleased to know that STAR COMMAND, the intergalactic adventure game from Warballoon Studios, is now available through Samsung Apps.
Warballoon worked with 100% Indie to launch the game on the Samsung Apps marketplace and were delighted with the process. âGetting to market was made very easy by 100% Indie. Their continuing hard work and dedication to Star Command was fantastic and we hope to work with them again,â said Jordan Coombs of the studio.
The intergalactic game puts you in the captain's chair of your very own spaceship, on a mission to visit strange new worlds, battle a bizarre range of enemy fleets, and teach exotic aliens about this human emotion called love.
âThe game has been called a âlove letter to Star Trek,â and this is certainly a great game inspired by an iconic TV and film brand,â says Chris Byatte of 100% Indie. âIt appeals to a wide range of players, however, so itâs fantastic that itâs been launched for Android through Samsungâs marketplace, with our help.â
Already a smartphone smash hit, Android gamers have been waiting for Star Command to beam onto their smartphones for a long time. Now available via Samsung Apps, the most powerful touchscreen devices in the galaxy are ready to take you to the final frontier.

Pet Roulette brings the addictive thrill of Russian Roulette direct to Android phones, but with pets. Players choose to kill or save a variety of innocent creatures using a selection of normal and specialised bullets in a series of increasingly rapid spins of the barrel.
âPet Roulette is an exciting, challenging and darkly entertaining game, set to dizzying graphic backdrop and the sound of a beating heartâ, said Anthony Magrath, founder of Nevistech. âLightning fast reactions are needed to score the highest bonus and win an array of weaponry ranging from nuclear strike to bubble guns.â
Additional mini-games provide a welcome relief from all the shooting. All the saved pets end up in the Hamster Wheel, which can be spun to win more bonus points. Those that are killed are destined for the Pet Recycler, where they have the chance to fight another day.
Nevistech has no concerns about the controversial use of hamsters in the game. âAlthough Pet Roulette features mainly hamsters, we have no hesitation in adding other pets if there is sufficient demandâ, said Anthony.
Pet Roulette is available as a free download on Google Play for mobiles and tablets on Android 2.2 and up: https://bitly.com/1cEunnS

If youâve got an itch to scratch and canât get to the nearest convenience store or casino, never fear. Lotto Bash, from SHIRO Technologies Inc, brings you all of the excitement of scratching your lucky lottery tickets in real-time, straight to your mobile device instead. The app is smooth and seamless, and a great way to kill some time.
Spread across five levels with in-app purchase options, Lotto Bash carves out a name for itself in the mobile gambling world with this top of the line app. While the âLotto Bucksâ offered in the game wonât help you to hit it big in real life, the spontaneous thrill of this game is well worth it.
Features:
This app is available for iPhone, iPad and even iPod. Itâs smooth feel and aesthetic vision translates many times over, allowing you to get your fix at five separate themed locations. You can take your scratching to The Pirate Treasure Level, The Las Vegas Level, The Holiday Lotto, The Christmas Lotto or even the Macao Lotto.
The app is wired for instant gratification, and youâll find yourself winning more times than expected, and wishing that you could cash in the Lotto Bucks in real time.
Concept and Functionality:
This is a flooded app category, but Lotto Bash holds itâs own with professionalism and supreme graphics. The entire experience here is quite fun, and we recommend giving it a try even if lottery tickets isnât exactly your cup of tea. Youâve got to win big a few times to unlock new levels, and the game hooks you into the Lottery state-of-mind in no time at all.
To really blow the competition out of the water, this app could consider transitioning into more interactive gaming, allowing for more styles of gambling and peer-to-peer functions as well. As much as scratching lottery tickets by your lonesome can help you to get your kicks, there are still a lot of apps out there that push the boundaries of mobile gaming and specifically gambling, with a whole lot more gusto. Still, the app allows one mode of gambling across several levels, and does it well.
