With Android 4.4 KitKat, Google's biggest blow to Microsoft isn't against Windows Phone. It's against Microsoft Office. You see, KitKat ships with Quickoffice, letting you edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go, without paying a dime, straight out of the box. This tidbit was largely lost in the news yesterday, given the large number of improvements and new features that KitKat offers. Yet it's a very big deal: every Android user that upgrades to KitKat will get Google's Quickoffice, and every new Android device (starting with the Nexus 5) that ships with KitKat or higher will also get Quickoffice."

Engadget reports: Smartphone market share for the third quarter...as you'd imagine, the world is still Android's oyster. Strategy Analytics estimates that the OS has crossed the symbolic 80 percent mark, reaching 81.3 percent of smartphone shipments by the end of September. Not that Google was the only company doing well — Nokia's strong US sales helped Windows Phone grow to 4.1 percent of the market, or nearly double what it had a year ago."

Nortel went bankrupt in 2009. In 2011, it held an auction for its massive patent portfolio. The winners of the auction were Apple, Microsoft, Sony, RIM, and others, who bought the patents for $4.5 billion as a consortium named Rockstar Bidco. At the time, many people speculated those patents would be used against Google, who bid separately but lost. It turns out they were right. Rockstar has filed eight lawsuits in federal court targeting Google and Android device manufacturers. 'Thecomplaint (PDF) against Google involves six patents, all from the same patent "family." They're all titled "associative search engine," and list Richard Skillen and Prescott Livermore as inventors. The patents describe "an advertisement machine which provides advertisements to a user searching for desired information within a data network. The oldest patent in the case is US Patent No. 6,098,065, with a filing date of 1997, one year before Google was founded. The newest patent in the suit was filed in 2007 and granted in 2011. The complaint tries to use the fact that Google bid for the patents as an extra point against the search giant.

“We are proud that Ruzzle has hit such staggering milestones,” said Daniel Hasselberg, CEO of developer MAG Interactive. “Since its launch, we have continuously improved the game. Even when it started to take off, we didn’t stop refining the game and still have more ideas and plans to create the best possible product. Our players appreciate this and share their love of Ruzzleacross social networks and by word of mouth, leading to the steady growth in downloads. At the same time, the sophisticated match-making system keeps players motivated to challenge each other competitively, collectively playing over 12 billion rounds to date.
“It’s proof that a small, motivated team can produce and maintain an excellent product. While we remain tightly focused, we are actively looking for more talented people to join our team and help take the company to new heights as part of the vibrant development scene in our home city of Stockholm.”
Ruzzle is an addictive, fast-paced puzzle game that challenges players to compete to find as many words as possible from a given set of letters on a four by four grid in two minutes by sliding a finger from letter to letter. Simple to learn but fiendishly difficult to master, Ruzzle can be played in 13 different languages and is available for free on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Amazon Kindle and Blackberry platforms.
Interesting Ruzzle-related statistics, newly revealed:
- MAG Interactive partners over 4 million random opponents every day.
- Collectively all Ruzzle players have swiped a distance that would get you to the moon and back 26 times.
- When they first start to play Ruzzle, players find an average of 18 words; by the time they have played 100 matches, they find an average of 51 words.
- Top players can average over 180 words per round, more than 1.5 words per second.

Insignia Games releases Lunata Rescue platformer for iOS. In this platform game, the player helps a charming treehopper to save its babies captured by insect enemies. Five unique maps and dozens of hand-made levels coupled with beautiful graphics and rewarding exploration are in charge for captivating gameplay.
Platform game genre is a players´ all-time choice since 80´s. It seems gamers will never get tired of jumping, running and striking through left-to-right platform landscapes. Lunata Rescue, while being a classic representative of the genre, adds much to traditional concepts.
The player controls a little treehopper questing the surroundings for the lost babies. Each level encourages players to explore environment collecting bonuses, evading enemies and trying to rescue each and every lost baby and finally face the big boss of the game, the evil ant queen Donatella. Each of five available maps are 100% hand-drawn, no tilemaps are used. And unlike many platform games, in Lunata Rescue the whole level design is not linear, meaning the player doesn´t just move from left to right, but scouts the environment in all directions instead.
beautiful cartoon style shows familiar things from bug´s perspective: tree leaves, grass and even bigger animals are just platforms to reach other areas of the level. Five game modes expect the player to combine his skills with abilities and upgrades obtained through the game to beat all challenges and collect achievements.
"Our first project took two years of production, and has several unique elements, including a lot of exclusive characters", says Kleber Seixas, the CEO of Insignia Games. "The game was designed using the Unity 3D engine, and we decided to invest in a console-quality game, but available for mobile platforms".
Pricing and availability
The game price is $0.99. The game is compatible with all devices supporting iOS 5 or higher. It is specially optimized for iPhone 5...

As part of our Early Release plan, we’ve discounted Wizardous: An Apprentice’s Betrayal to ONLY $0.99 until 11:59pm (EST) on November 13th.
The ‘Early Release’ version of Wizardous: AAB includes,
- 30 levels of action-based puzzles
- Access to all four of the Master Wizard’s magical abilities
- Narrative-focused cutscenes at the conclusion of each sector of the castle
ALSO, if you purchase the ‘Early Release’ version through an official store now while the game is discounted, on November 14th, you’ll be upgraded to the ‘Official Release’ version with the final 10 levels, bonus challenges including time challenges and no-death restrictions for select levels, as well as access to the epic cutscene finale to this episode of the Wizardous Saga (if you’re up to the challenge of beating this tough, retro game that is)!
We hope the deal speaks for itself, frankly because it has to. We’re good at making games, not at writing pretty marketing stuff. And because of that, we’ll instead let our product and those that have played it speak for us…
In the Press
“There aren't any continues. No health bar. No magic meter. You have one life, and if you die, you start all over again. And you will die. Over, and over again.” - Kill Streak Media
“Retro styled games in the mobile world are a dime a dozen, or more, but the interesting ones are rarer… [Wizardous] may be entering a crowded market, but it appears to be interesting at least, something many other titles in this genre fail to accomplish.” - Super Game Droid
“Retro style gaming got a shot in the arm today with the release of the epic sidescroller Wizardous… a straightforward yet mindbogglingly difficult approach that feels plucked straight from the NES era of gaming.” - Gaming On Batteries
Player Reviews – Yup, we pulled a 3 star quote for iOS over our 5 star reviews
iOS®, shine4362 – (3 Stars):
“Frustrating! I absolutely luv platform games and it truly seems that this one might have some potential… I look forward to updates... and then I might be back to add a couple more stars to my review.”
NOOK™, Anonymous – (5 stars):
“Please put it on top free apps so everybody could see how fun and awesome it is!”
Amazon™, Eric – (5 stars):
“This game although lacks graphical advancement... it has an air of nostalgia. Keep it up!”
Google Play™, David C. – (5 stars):
“Really fun so far. Retro fun.”

"Okay Google." Those Touchless Controls aren't just for the Moto X anymore -- they're now part and parcel of the Nexus 5. With today's unveiling of Google's (terribly leaked) Nexus 5, we're getting a first look at Android 4.4 KitKat on the handset, and that OS update comes with some significant tweaks to Search and Now. For starters, Nexus 5 users will have the ability to set hot keywords as a means of activating or "waking up" Now voice search. So, presumably, this means you'll be able to link any word you'd like to start barking voice commands at Now. Just don't be surprised if Now talks back to you: KitKat also apparently allows for a dialogue of sorts between users and the handset to refine search queries. This could be especially useful when directing Now to access contacts by first name. For example, saying "Text Jennifer" could result in it asking you to specify, "Which Jennifer?" It's smart control made smarter.
But that's just the tip of the improvements Google's made to its Now and Search product. Overall, speech recognition is said to have been made 25% more accurate and manual access to Now can be triggered by a swipe to the left (Nexus 5-only, for now) -- no longer a swipe from the bottom of the screen up. Now has also been outfitted with a wider array of "contextual cards." It's yet another step in making Google's digital assistant even more prescient, as it will now display information based on a user's current activity, like Fandango for ticket listings if you're at a theatre, or even updates on a favorite TV show you've searched for previously. And going even further, Google Now will also provide "deep links" to applications you've installed on the handset. In the use case Google provided, this means that a recipe search won't just display link results, but will also ping up the AllRecipes app or even OpenTable, if you're on the hunt for a restaurant. Though all of these Search tweaks are bundled into the Nexus 5 for now, they should soon rollout to other Nexus devices as Android 4.4 KitKat is made more widely available.

Now that we know what smartphone market share looked like in the third quarter when broken down by manufacturer, it's time to compare performance by platform. As you'd imagine, the world is still Android's oyster. Strategy Analytics estimates that the OS has crossed the symbolic 80 percent mark, reaching 81.3 percent of smartphone shipments by the end of September. Not that Google was the only company doing well -- Nokia's strong US sales helped Windows Phone grow to 4.1 percent of the market, or nearly double what it had a year ago. Whether or not these trends continue is another matter. Although Android likely isn't in danger given the launches of phones like theGalaxy Note 3, there are also new iPhones and Lumias on the scene; there may be one or two surprise upsets when the fourth quarter is over.
