Google’s Android operating system now accounts for over 80 per cent of all smartphone units shipped.
IDC reports that 261.1 million smartphones were shipped during the third quarter, with 211.6 million of them running Android.
This is the first time that Android topped 80 per cent in its short history.
Also reaching a milestone was Microsoft’s Windows Phone, which grew 156 per cent year over year. It’s overall market share is still less than five per cent but IDC believes the support of Nokia helped drive the platform into multiple tiers and price points.
"Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success: price," said Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team.
"Both platforms have a selection of devices available at prices low enough to be affordable to the mass market, and it is the mass market that is driving the entire market forward."
Apple’s iOS has the second biggest market share of just 12.9 per cent, shipping 33.8 million units in Q3.

Sony has announced the launch of the official PlayStation app, which keeps users connected to their console straight from a connected device.
The PlayStation Network can be accessed, giving PS fans free roam of their own and friends profiles as well as trophy accomplishments.
Messages can be exchanged between PS4, PS3, PlayStation Vita and mobile devices installed with the app, and notifications can also be received about any news, game invites and game items can be listed through the software.
The official PlayStation website can be accessed directly from the app, which features game news, blogs and information, plus a device can be used as a second screen for selected titles.
For example, on pre-installed PS4 title The Playroom, players can draw pictures on their mobile device and flick them straight to their TV where they appear as a 3D object within the game.
Friends activities can be viewed in the ‘what’s new’ section, and when notifications are tapped on, users can boot pre-installed applications, such as browsers so they can view uploaded gameplay, and comment.
Game content may be downloaded via the PlayStation app, and sent straight to a PS Vita, PS3 and PS4 console.
The app is available to download today for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android.

Ubisoft has announced its Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag companion app.
This primarily functions as a second screen allowing gamers to set waypoints and see enemies that are out of range of the in-game minimap.
Hand drawn treasure maps found around the world are also stored on the player’s tablets.
Ships captured and added to Kenway’s fleet in the game can be controlled from the app too – they can be sent on trading missions so players can make a little extra cash while playing. Also available are Animus Database entries that have been unlocked in the main game.
The app is available for free on iPads and Android tablets.

Android powered gaming console Ouya is to receive a comprehensive user interface redesign this month, its creator has announced.
A spokesperson for Ouya told Engadget that the updated interface is designed to make it easier to discover new games.
The interface will place a greater focus on displaying cover art for games and make menu headers smaller to compensate.
The update will also introduce support for USB storage devices, as well as the ability to download and queue games from the web. Additionally, custom recommendations will be delivered through a tweaked system menu.
Ouya hasn't confirmed an official release date for the update, only that it will launch this month.
In our Ouya review we criticised the console for its "lack of a visible download queue, the zero visibility of prices in store, the horrible controller lag, the weak Wi-Fi receiver and the blocks on fully expanding the storage". But we also said that, with regular updates, the system could yet realise its potential.

Sure the iPad Air is thin, light and has amazing battery life, but the arrival of its smaller cousin is about to make your choice more difficult. Apple's upgraded 8-inch slate, theRetina iPad mini, is now available, popping up in Apple's online stores around the globe. According to an internal Apple document posted by MacRumors, while some countries are getting both WiFi and cellular models, mainland China will have to make do with the WiFi-only variant. As we mentioned in our hands-on post, the device retains most of the first iPad mini's looks, save for being a tad thicker and heavier. The biggest change is its updated high-res display, while inside you'll find the new A7 CPU and M7 "motion coprocessor" tandem that we first saw in the iPhone 5s.
Because those changes come at a price, the most basic model (16GB, WiFi) sells for $399. If that sounds toobasic, you can add $100 more for each step in the storage ladder (32GB, 64GB and 128GB) and $130 for LTE connection. It's available now from Apple's online store (16GB and 32GB WiFi models list ship times of 1 - 3 business days, while larger / LTE-equipped models have a 5 - 10 day window), and should arrive shortly at local retailers -- assuming you haven't already opted for one of the manyalternatives available.

We knew the BlackBerry Z30 was headed to Verizon as a US-exclusive, but now we actually have a date for it: November 14th. Starting this Thursday, BlackBerry's 5-inch flagship will be made available to Big Red subscribers for $200 with a new two-year agreement, or for $23/month (for 24 months) on the operator's Edge upgrade plan. Regardless of the financing route you choose to take, that chunk of change will grant you access to BlackBerry's latest 10.2 update and all the "prosumer" perks it affords: in-app BBM messaging, notification previews, and the new BB Priority Hub. But withBlackBerry on the ever-increasing downturn, you'd be forgiven for passing this one up -- wireless charging, be damned.

The OUYA user interface isn't what we'd call "ideal." The folks behind OUYA apparently realize that too, and today we've got the first look at some big updates that will be coming to the Android-based $100 game console sometime this month. A company spokesperson says a new designer was brought in to overhaul the UI so that it's easier to discover new games (and so that it's more pleasant to look at from 10 feet away). Additionally, the update includes some honest-to-goodness new features, including support for USB storage and the ability to queue games from the web (and OUYA's newsletters) so that when you go fire up the console they'll already be downloaded.
Throughout, you'll notice a bigger emphasis on cover art -- in the "Discover" section, for instance, the menu headers have actually been made smaller to make room for larger game thumbnails. OUYA also made some subtle tweaks like showing all the game titles on the "Discover" page and going with a more consistent icon style. Not rocket science, exactly, but they're details that should add up to a cleaner browsing experience. Additionally, double-tapping will bring up the redesigned system menu, where you can purchase and like games. Here, you'll also find custom game recommendations -- not unlike what Microsoft has begun doing in the Windows Store.

AlmostTI v2.3.1 for Android is released. AlmostTI turns your Android device into a Texas Instruments graphing calculator. It fully emulates TI-85, TI-86, TI-82, TI-83, TI-83+, TI-83+ Silver Edition, TI-84+ Silver Edition, and TI-73 calculators made by Texas Instruments. And yes, if you have got a tablet, that will be a really BIG calculator. AlmostTI also lets you save your calculations at any point and then select from several previously saved tasks.
To run AlmostTI, you will need at least one calculator system ROM. AlmostTI does not include any calculator ROMs on its own, as they are intellectual property of Texas Instruments. You should place your own ROM, preferably dumped from the calculator you own, onto your internal storage. AlmostTI recognizes following ROM files (in upper case):
TI85.ROM, TI86.ROM, TI82.ROM, TI73.ROM, TI83.ROM, TI83P.ROM, TI83SE.ROM, TI84SE.ROM
AlmostTI v2.3.1 for Android Changelog:
* Fixed problem misrecognizing some TI83+/TI84+ ROMs.
* Made file naming take precedence over file content when recognizing ROM type.

As you can imagine, many, many devices pass through Engadget's proverbial review bunker. Most start their lives as nebulous market research data presented on PowerPoint slides, and gradually coalesce into something real. It's all part of the time-honored product-development process. Thanks to the popularity of crowdfunding, though, some products start life elsewhere -- as a dream, or even a hobby. ThePlayJam GameStick is one of them. This $80 portable Android-based game console enters the market at a curious time. Two gaming giants are poised to launch their next-gen platforms this month, and OUYA -- that other Kickstarter Android console -- is gaining traction through wider availability in retail.
PlayJam (the company behind GameStick) may be established in the TV-game market, but, despite not having dangerously high expectations to live up to, it's still got its work cut out. As for taking on the giants? That's never been its intention. Either way, with the gaming universe about to experience a tsunami of media attention, will GameStick be able to ride the waves of excitement, or will it find itself splashing in the ankle busters? We took to the thumbsticks to find out.

The iOS and Android release for FIFA 14 has been downloaded over 26m times, EA has revealed.
It’s the first time the series has been released as a free-to-play title. It’s unknown how that sales performance compares to its premium £2.99-priced predecessor.
For comparison Pocket Gamer reports that the console version of last year’s FIFA 13 sold 14.5m units – although, of course, at around £40 per shot that’s likely to convert into a far greater revenue return.
The game has also topped the free iOS charts in 148 countries and has ranked in the Top Ten Grossing charts of 155 countries.

An iPhone case claiming to be the “ultimate smartphone case” is nearing the end of its Kickstarter campaign.
Like any good case, the BuQu Tech ChargeSmart aims to protect phones from drops and scratches, but its creators claim that it also “does what no other battery case can do”.
BuQu Tech claims that by using a combination of the case and a free iOS app, the ChargeSmart will double an iPhone’s battery life, but also say that it stops the degradation of the phone’s battery, meaning that a longer charge can be held.
On the Kickstarter page for the case, the creators explain that “with normal use, batteries last for about a year and a half before they start to seriously degrade”.
“[But] ChargeSmart’s proprietary charging algorithms will significantly extend the life of your iPhone’s battery – our target is to extend battery life by as much as 50 per cent.”
The case also holds a reserve of power, so that even if the phone runs out of battery, it can be used for a brief period.
"The ChargeSmart case offers consumers not only peace of mind, but a real and reliable way to put the power back in their hands," said Jessie Revlin, senior director of marketing at BuQu Tech.
"With its versatility and built-in intelligence, ChargeSmart is simply the next generation in smartphone cases."
The Kickstarter campaign for the case is looking for $55,000 in donations by November 14th, with the case available for an “early adopter” price of $50 (£31) – half of the $99 (£62) MSRP.

Mobiles can be temperamental creatures, sometimes failing to secure signal, running slowly or exploding.
There have been user reports of an iPhone exploding on a plane, a Galaxy S III spitting white flames and another Apple handset catching fire in an owner's pocket.
Now, a Vodafone spokesperson reports an iPad exploded in a Canberra-based store, according to news.com.au.
Staff and customers were evacuated from the shop as the device's charging port projected 'a burst of flames,' prompting the fire brigade to put an end to the smoke and sparks assaulting the location.
An Apple rep visited the store to retrieve the tablet, but no official word on what caused it to explode at present.

48 per cent of iOS users access at least one mobile loyalty scheme compared to 32 per cent on Android.
One in ten Apple users said that they would sign up for a mobile wallet scheme, where as 12 per cent preferred to go in-store to redeem a discount or offer sent to their phone, reveals CloudZync.
One in two iPhone owners have access to some form of mobile loyalty scheme, making them the most loyal shopper. They were closely followed by 43 per cent of Windows Phone users, BlackBerry with 38 per cent and Android with just 32 per cent.
The average consumer is now connected to around eight loyalty schemes through their mobile device, and 74 per cent of British smartphone owners are now aware of mobile wallet solutions, whether they use them or not.
Consult Hyperion revealed that 64 per cent of the US would never use a mobile wallet, while 58 per cent of UK consumers were far more accepting of the technology.
Andrew Smith, cofounder and CTO of CloudZync, commented: “The smartphone could and should put an end to loyalty card ‘wallet bulge’ – even as it supercharges the loyalty schemes retailers still use to engage consumers.”
In related news, CloudZync launched their own mobile wallet back in August, with 280 merchants already signed up as it was rolled.
