After agreeing to increase the amount of taxes it pays to the council, Apple’s plans to build a new futuristic ‘spaceship’ campus has been approved Cupertino City.
The news comes just over two years after Steve Jobs personally pitched the project to the City Council.
Apple will be clearing 176 acres of land, including thousands of trees and 26 current buildings, to make way for the ‘spaceship’ – a 2.8-million-square-foot circular headquarters with four floors and an exterior almost entirely of curved glass.
The spaceship will house almost 14,200 employees, nearly three times the number previously working on the site.
The increase in tax is actually a reduction in the size of a sales tax rebate Cupertino City gives Apple each year. Last year the city refunded around 50 per cent of the sales taxes it received from Apple-related purchases back to the firm. From now on it will only refund 35 per cent.
Check out some of the rendered images of Apple’s new spaceship campus below:

Fireproof Games has announced The Room Two will be available for iPad from December 12 2013.
A post on the studio's official website states that the "initial iPad release will be followed by the iPhone and Android versions shortly afterwards in early 2014".
Last year, CVG hand-picked The Room as one of the best iOS games available. "The Room is like stumbling across Professor Layton's inner sanctum after he's gone mad dabbling in the occult," we said.
"Its spooky, densely packed logic puzzles play out on a series of elaborate treasure chests... A fascinating, brilliantly constructed curio which is engaging, thoughtful and wonderfully presented."

The third Humble Mobile Bundle has gone live, including the Android version of Ridiculous Fishing.
The game's developer Vlambeer posted a message on its blog on Monday stating that the Android version was nearing completion and would be ready "sooner than you think".
The game can be purchased with the Humble Mobile Bundle 3 or separately from the Google Play Store.
As with its predecessors, Humble Mobile Bundle 3 lets customers choose the price they pay for a selection of Android games.
The bundle consists of robot shooter Epoch, space station strategy game Rymdkapsel, puzzle game SpellTower and hack and slash platformer Swordigo. Customers who pay more than the average (currently $5) will also receive Ridiculous Fishing and tower defence game Kindgom Rush, as well as a new batch of games next week.
In its latest blog entry, Vlambeer explained that the game's surprise Android release was designed to make up for previously scuppered iOS plans. The iOS version was also supposed be a surprise, but it had to be announced early when a clone entitled Ninja Fishing was released.
"We wanted Ridiculous Fishing's original launch to be surprise announcement, but way back then, a clone threw a wrench in those plans and we ended up scrambling," Vlambeer said.
"This time around though, we can pull it off. So here you go, Ridiculous Fishing for Android, launched sort of the way Ridiculous Fishing for iOS was supposed to launch."
In CVG's Ridiculous Fishing review, we said: "You'll fall in love with Ridiculous Fishing's style but the honeymoon period ends faster than you'd think."

Grand Theft Auto V's 'iFruit' companion app is available on Windows Phone now, letting users of Microsoft-backed smartphones keep up with the happenings of Los Santos and Blaine County on the go.
The app, modeled after the in-game iPhone parody of the same name, lets players improve their relationship with Franklin's dog Chop for better behavior in-game, customize cars and license plates, and keep up with Social Club crews and news.
It's available as a free download on Windows Phone Store. iFruit first appeared on the iOS App Store just before GTA 5 released on Sept. 17. The app then hit Android's Google Play in late October.
Rockstar continues to support the open-world crime game with updates like Tuesday's Beach Bum Pack, a free piece of DLC which adds beach-themed weaponry, vehicles, and clothes to GTA 5.
GTA Online players will also find several new multiplayer Jobs to undertake and customization options to bestow on their in-game avatars. Rockstar said it is working on several more content updates for the multiplayer game for release "in the weeks and months ahead," including a content creator for users to generate missions of their own.

Acknowledged, a full web browser may not be the most useful thing to run on a 1.6-inch touchscreen, but that's almost not the point here. What matters is that Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch now has its own custom ROM, courtesy of anXDA member called fOmey. The modded software side-steps a number of the manufacturer's locks and limitations, letting the device run third-party apps, widgets, wallpapers and interfaces like Nova Launcher. Bluetooth tethering is enabled too, apparently allowing the watch to grab a web connection from any smartphone that supports the protocol. It's hard to say for sure how smoothly it all runs, due to a lack of feedback from Gear owners so far (or perhaps a lack of Gear owners, period), but you'll find full instructions at the source link if you want to give it a go.

As the ancient proverb goes: a next-gen console ain't no next-gen consolewithout next-gen mobile apps. We can't remember who said that exactly, but it's impossible to forget what's built into the new Xbox One SmartGlass app. After all, Microsoft's been hyping everything you'll be able to do with that second screenfor months now. In preparation for the One's launch later this week, the companion app has (unsurprisingly) landed first in the Windows Phone store. As you'd imagine, it's basically useless, but you can still download it, sign in and poke around the limited UI should you wish. We expect the new version to show up in the App and Play stores in due course, but perhaps this debut appearance will remind Sony that Windows Phone users like apps, too.
Update: It appears that Microsoft not only released the SmartGlass app for Windows Phone today, but the folks in Redmond unveiled the Windows 8.1 version as well. So now that Microsoft fans can get SmartGlass on any of their devices, the only thing remaining is to get their hands on that lust-worthy console.

November 20th, 2013, 00:51 Posted By: wraggster
Earlier this year, lawmakers in San Francisco and New York joined forces in an initiative called "Secure our Smartphones" that would encourage manufacturers to include a so-called "kill switch" in future phones to address the growing problem of handset theft. According to George Gascon, San Francisco's district attorney, carriers are determined to kill the kill switch initiative. The New York Times reportsthat Gascon was in talks with Samsung to pre-load software that would allow customers to deactivate stolen handsets, similar to iOS 7's Activation Lock. However, inclusion of the software would require approval from US carriers, and the likes of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint weren't having it.
According to Gascon, it appeared that the companies in question rejected the idea because it could cut into the revenue they make from cellphone insurance. In response, the CTIA, which represents the carriers, says it already has a solution in the stolen phone database that went live last year. However, some say that solution falls short, as it doesn't address those devices that end up overseas, out of the reach of the database. A Samsung spokeswoman had this to say in a statement to The New York Times:
"We are working with the leaders of the Secure Our Smartphones (S.O.S.) Initiative to incorporate the perspective of law enforcement agencies. We will continue to work with them and our wireless carrier partners towards our common goal of stopping smartphone theft."

Samsung's Android-powered interchangeable-lens camera is clearly positioned as a niche device, due in no small part to its sky-high $1,600 body-only price tag, but deep-pocketed early adopters can pick up a Galaxy NX at US retailers beginning today. The 20.3-megapixel ILC has a 1.6GHz quad-core chipset and Jelly Bean under the hood, so you can install thousands of applications for editing, storing and sharing images captured through the 16-55mm kit lens. We can't say we'll be queueing for the opportunity to pick one up, though -- while it's a fine camera, the NX is significantly overpriced, especially considering that you'll soon be able to take home a full-frame Sony Alpha 7 for just a few hundred dollars more.

Apple now accepts used smartphones, tablets and computers that have water damage as part of its trade-in program.
The tech giant has revised its Apple Store Reuse and Recycling Program in the US and UK so that water-damaged iPhones can be accepted, 9to5Mac reports. However, devices with signs of liquid damage will push down their value.
Previously, if a device’s liquid contact indicator (located in the bottom of the headphone jack) was pink or red instead of white or silver, the phone would be worthless as a trade-in.
However, seriously water-damaged devices with corrosion in the ports or evidence of liquid under the phone's display, will not be accepted.
The changes are valid in Apple Stores and don't affect online trade-in values.
Apple launched its tech trade-in scheme earlier this year.

An £8 per month contract for 12 months, with an £8 per month discount. Get in there.
T-Mobile - who reported €530 million Q2 net profit this year- made a bit of a boo-boo on their site, as a glitch caused a sim-only contract deal to be given away for nothing, revelas HotUKDeals.
The plan includes 250 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data, with calls to 08 numbers - usually costing a pretty penny – included in the deal.
The contract should be priced at £8 per month, costing £96 over the 12 months – however with the £8 per month discount – if our math’s are correct there should be a whopping zero to pay.
Not a bad deal just before Christmas.
T-Mobile has acknowledge the mistake and said that it will honour anyone who takes advantage of the deal before it fixes the bug. However some customers are worries that although the network will undoubtedly stick to its word, there is nothing stopping it increasing the price of the contract later down the line.
The T-Mobile seven day cancellation policy should secure the safety of being caught out by that though, so not to worry.
What’s better than a cheap mobile contract? A T-Mobile glitch contract.
Check out the deal here.

The smartwatch surpasses not just ours, but Samsung’s expectations.
Samsung has announced that its companion device, the Galaxy Gear has become the world’s most popular smartwatch, selling 800,000 units since its release in September, reports Reuters.
Many people had low expectations of the device, saying that it had little to no compelling features.
Even the South Korean-based firm admitted to being surprised by the amount sold, after starting of its life on a bumpy road, being shunned by pretty much everybody.
The best aspect of the device at the time was the fantasticnostalgia-inducing adverts that included the likes of the Power Rangers, Star Trek, and Predator.
This must have paid off; either that or we are all simply a sucker for a new toy – or both.
The device currently only has about 70 dedicated applications, causing market expectations to be weak. UK retailer Phones4U were even giving the Gear away for free to anyone purchasing the Galaxy Note3 on contract earlier this month.
Best Buy in the US also reported that the smartwatch was suffering from 30 per cent return rates.
Despite this, the $300 device has fought through and certainly been resilient in a market that was initially against it.
Samsung said in a statement: “It’s the most sold wearable watch available in the market place, and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear.â€
If the previously rumoured Galaxy Gear 2 comes into fruition, or if Apple ever unveils its long awaited wearable device after reporting hard engineering problems, there will be a lot to contend with, and a tough crowd to convince.

Today marks the debut of two features we've been waiting for since Amazon first announced its new Kindle Fire line lo so many weeks ago. Goodreads and Second Screen integration will be rolling out to Fire HD and HDX owners over-the-air in the next couple of weeks - or you can just go to Amazon's site and download Fire OS 3.1 right now. Goodreads brings social book reading features to the tablet, so you can rate and review books and find out what your friends are reading. Also, good news for those who like showing off their virtual bookshelves - you can actually import all of the print and e-books you've bought from Amazon over the years. Second Screen, meanwhile, lets you "fling" shows from your Fire to Samsung TVs and sets with a PS3 attached (PS4 support is coming before year's end).
Also new for OS 3.1 is added enterprise support, Cloud Collections for organizing content off-device and voice diction.

Verizon isn't going to let AT&T hog all the Lumia 2520 buyers this weekend -- it just announced that it will start selling Nokia's Windows RT tablet on November 21st, one day before the device is available at AT&T. Pricing will remain the same at $500 contract-free or $400 on a two-year term, but Verizon is sweetening its deal by offering a carrier-appropriate red model to online shoppers; retail customers will have to be content with black. There's no word on 2520 variants for other carriers, but it's good to know that Americans will have at least some choice in networks when picking up Nokia's LTE-equipped slate.

40 per cent of Android smartphone and 42 per cent of Android tablet owners fail to protect their devices from malware even though 99 per cent of attacks are aimed at the Android platform, reports Kaspersky Lab research.
The research discovered 35,000 malicious samples for the whole of 2012, and a huge 47,000 for the first half of 2013.
The threats to Android vary from cyber-criminals programing a smartphone to send text messages to a premium rate number, in-turn stealing money from their account, to turning a device into a spying gadget, recording all the users passwords, calls and online banking accounts to fraudsters.
It was reported earlier in the year that Android malware threats spiked 35 per cent year-on-year,coming from a plethora of forms, such as" SMS-stealing banking malware, fraudulent dating and entertainment apps, weaponised legitimate apps and malicious apps posing as useful tools.
Smartphones and tablets have become the place where our most important information is stored for a large percentage of people, meaning that any attack on our phone to be devastating.
Kaspersky offer internet security for Android, integrating cutting-edge the that detects cyber-threats, and includes a set of intelligent mechanisms that can proactively detect even the newest unknown threats by monitoring their behaviour.
Kaspersky Internet Security for Android is available on the Kaspersky Lab’s official site and from Android Apps on Google Play.

The ongoing patent battle raging against two of the biggest technology companies in the world appears to be taking its toll on Apple, reports Reuters.
An executive from the iPhone creator testified on Friday that Samsung had damaged the company’s reputation, marketing efforts and general business by deploying devices that copied the iPhone and iPad.
Phil Schiller, Marketing chief at Apple, said: “It’s much harder to create demand and people question our innovation and design skills like people never used to. Samsung have weakened the world view of Apple as this great designer and innovator.â€
Apple previously accused Samsung of copying some iPhone features, such as using fingers to pinch and zoom, as well as design aspects like the flat black glass screen – winning more than $1 billion after convincing the jury of the misdemeanor.
Schiller - who has worked on Apple’s marketing since the iPhone’s launch in 2007 – said that Samsung had duplicated many aspects of Apple’s products, designs and features.
“The very essence of what Apple is about. If we don’t have that, we don’t have Apple’s business.â€
William Price, an attorney for Samsung attempted to get Schiller to admit that Apple were not the first to create an attractive an easy-to-use device.
Asking: “Apple doesn’t own a patent on a product being beautiful or sexy, isn’t that correct?â€
He then tried to get Schiller to concede that Samsung was the inspiration for the iPad mini, which was Apple’s answer to the number of smaller tablets released by the Korean electronics company.
Schiller commented: “This had nothing to do with competition. We were simply trying to make our product better.â€
US District Judge Lucy Koh has set the closing arguments for this coming Tuesday.
The court battle has hit the headlines on a number of occasions. Previously being rumoured thatSamsung paid Apple $1 billion in coins. However this was later proved to be untrue.

Remember that Apple / PrimeSense deal that was rumored to be going down in July? It may have just gone through: according to Israeli news source Calcalist, Cupertino acquired the motion sensing technology firm for $345 million this weekend. If true, it could hint at future Apple products with natural, motion controlled interfaces, integrating the same kind of technology that PrimeSenseused to help Microsoft build the first Kinect. In a statement to the TheNextWeb, PrimeSense refers to the report as a "recycled rumor," saying only that it "does not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing." According to the report, Apple is hounding after the motion sensing tech to improve Apple TV, noting that the original deal was delayed due to legal issues. Hungry for more?
