"Jolla, the mobile phone company formed by ex-Nokia employees, has officially launched its first phone. It will be initially available in Finland, paired with the local telecom operator DNA. After that, it will be made available in 135 other countries. The Jolla handset runs the Sailfish OS, which is itself based on the former MeeGo platform developed by Nokia and Intel several years ago to produce Linux-based smartphone software. Sailfish can run Android apps and it also integrates Nokia's Here mapping and positioning technology. Looking at the hardware, the device sports a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 1GB memory and 16GB of flash storage, plus a 4.5in 960x540 IPS touchscreen with Gorilla 2 Glass. It has the usual mobile network support, including GSM/3G/4G, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth, 8MP autofocus rear camera and 2MP front camera. SIM-free pricing is expected to be €399

Gone are the days of boring bathroom mirrors that only reflect what's in front of them. What you really need is a bathroom mirror that gives stock quotes, displays the local weather, and tells you the temperature of the water you are about to use to wash your face. Seraku Corporation is now in the process of filling that burning need and has gotten a bunch of pressattention by doing so. A cynic might wonder why people who absolutely, positively must have Internet access while they shave or perform other bathroom mirror duties don't just make a wall-mounted holder for their tablets next to their pre-Internet bathroom mirrors, but that would destroy the fun of having the display built directly into the mirror, along with sensors that detect hand gestures so you can control your mirror (no doubt by asking, "Who is the fairest of them all?") without touching it with your greasy fingers. Note that this is technically not a smart mirror but a smart washbasin with a mirror attached to it. Either way, it's not available for retail sale quite yet.

iOS7 release saw sport and lifestyle app impressions rise six times the normal volume.
Feature phones only accounted for four per cent of all mobile impressions on Q3 this year, where as non-phone connected devices such as tablets came in at 23 per cent and smartphones dominated impressions with 73 per cent.
Although a large percentage came from smartphones, this is actually a decrease from the same period last year where it accounted for 75 per cent, reports Millennial Media.
Needless to say, Apple took the top spot in the top 15 manufacturers ranked by impressions, followed by Samsung, BlackBerry, LG and HTC.
The top devices by impressions were the iPhone, Galaxy S, the iPad, iPod Touch and the BlackBerry Curve.
During the first week following the release of iOS7, impressions from the updated OS grew an average 185 per cent a day, most noticeable on impressions and communications app which were nearly three times their usual volume, and sports and lifestyle apps with grew sic times their normal overage impression levels.
Android OS led the impressions race with 56 per cent, and increased on its own total from last year which was 52 per cent,
iOS comes in second with 37 per cent this year, another increase on last year’s 34 per cent, and BlackBerry came in third with six per cent. This is however less than last years 8 per cent.
The top five application categories by impressions were games which held the top spot since last year, music and entertainment which also held its position, mobile social media rose a rank from fourth to third, swapping places with communications, and productivity and tools stuck fast at fifth.
Separating mobile devices into tablets and smartphones, productivity and tools was used most on smartphones, and music and entertainment most on tablets. Games were the next most used functionality on both devices, where as shopping and retail was third most used on smartphone compared to travel and local on tablet.

Waking Mars developer Tiger Style Games is creating a sequel to its 2009 iOS standout Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, due for release this spring for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android platforms.
Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon continues the arachnid-themed platforming that defined the team's first Spider game, presenting players with a deep background narrative that slowly unfolds throughout each side-scrolling level. Few details regarding the project have been revealed so far, though Tiger Style notes that its Spider follow-up will be "bigger, better, and richer than ever before."
The Android version of Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor was recently added to the ongoing Humble Mobile Bundle 3 as a bonus incentive for beating the package's average purchase price (currently a little more than $5).

The Humble Mobile Bundle 3, which made its debut last week – headlined by Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing – has now added three new games, available to those who have contributed more than the average pay-what-you-want price.
Driving simulator Desert Bus, about a bus on its way from Arizona to Las Vegas, is perhaps the most well-known of the trio. You may have heard of it from its annual fundraising campaign called Desert Bus for Hope, which recentlycleared over $520,000 for Child's Play – an organization that coordinates donation of toys, games and consoles to sick children in hospitals across the country.
Alongside the game about driving a bus for hours is minimalist puzzle game and former iOS-only successHundreds, which tasks players with tapping circles to increase their size and numerical value, with the goal being to accumulate a total of 100 on-screen points. The third game on offer is Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor – an action-adventure platformer. A sequel, titledSpider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon, is due in the spring.
There are currently just over six days left on the Humble Mobile Bundle 3 clock.

Post-mortal strategy game Skulls of the Shogun is out now on the App Store, almost a year after it debuted on Windows Phone. Developer 17-Bit also released the game for Windows 8, Windows, Xbox 360, and later Steam, but today's arrival brings the game to iPhones and iPads for the first time, priced at $5.
17-Bit's Jake Kazdal told Pocket Gamer the iOS games is based on the Steam version the studio released in the summer. That means the tweaks and additions to that port are in the iOS version, including the extra episode and Tanuki monk unit.
As for multiplayer, the iOS port supports real-time "pass-and-play" on one device, as well as asynchronous turn-based battles online. Like other versions the multiplayer is cross-platform compatible, albeit only with Steam.
We were big fans of 17-Bit's take on a samurai's afterlife, awarding Skulls of the Shogun the full five stars in our review. As Jess put it, "Skulls of the Shogun is joyful, cheeky, and like most memorable experiences, it's best with friends."

Superdata warns of "user acquisition bloodbath," suggests skipping the seasonal marketing push
The cost of acquiring new users for mobile games is growing faster than the market itself, according to research firm Superdata. The company this week told developers on its blog to brace themselves for a "mobile user acquisition bloodbath" this holiday season, as the already increasing cost of new users escalates sharply during the year-end festivities.
For 2013, Superdata projects the US mobile game market to increase 25 percent to $3 billion. However, while average revenue per users have been more or less flat since the beginning of the year, the cost per install (CPI) in October was 41 percent than in January, and Superdata projects that December's CPI on iOS will be more than double what it cost in January, somewhere in the $7 to $8 range. The company also did some quick math to illustrate how difficult it is to turn a profit when users cost that much to pick up.
"Let's say that you've just acquired a cohort of 100 brand new users at an average CPI of $2.25 USD. The average conversion rate (from a non-spending to a spending user) in October was 4.68 percent," the company said. "Each of these players spends $21.45 (average revenue per paying user for mobile in the US). That gives you $100.39 in monthly earnings. With $225 in cost, you'll need to make sure you keep those users engaged for at least two months before you start making a profit. And two months is an eon in mobile game time."
Given the exorbitant cost of new user acquisition this holiday season, Superdata even raised the possibility that mobile outfits might want to spend the season on the sidelines rather than burn money trying to reach the top of the charts for Christmas morning when a flood of new smartphone and tablet owners start looking for games to download.
"One school of thought is to ignore the holiday season all together, rather than spending several months of marketing budget at the end of the year," Superdata said. "The idea of outspending others to get picked up by millions of proud new handset owners is, according to some, a fantasy. Better to spend your money after the holidays."

Nokia has taken a leaf out of Microsoft’s book and released a new advert that takes a dig out of Apple.
While Nokia might not be as brave as Microsoft or Samsung by actually saying it’s an iPad, it’s clear that the advert is mocking Apple’s new tablet, with the voice over calling it â€thinner than a pencil’ and saying it â€has been to space’.
While the â€iPad’ owner starts off feeling very smug about his device, it soon transpires that the lack of keyboard is causing him some embarrassment in front of a few lady friends.
The Nokia Lumia 2520 is the phone-maker's first Windows tablet and comes with 4G LTE, Windows RT 8.1, 2MP HD wide-angle camera and red, white, cyan and black colour variants.

ME Award 2013-nominated game available on Google Play.
Sonic Dash, the endless runner developed by Sega's UK studio Hardlight, arrived on the App Store back in March and has achieved downloads in the millions – as well asME App of the Day.
The one thing that seemed to leave some mobile users angered, however, was Android disregard.
That issue has now been resolved though, as the the freemium game can be found on Google Play, sating the needs of Android gamers.
Chris Southall, CTO, Hardlight, said: "Whenever we’ve talked about Sonic Dash, someone has asked when it will be released on Android. This level of enthusiasm made it very easy when deciding to create the Android version."
He's not wrong – Android was in high demand when the company announced the game was an ME Awards finalist.

PlayStation 2 classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is headed to mobile devices next month, Rockstar has announced.
iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Amazon Kindle versions are on the way.San Andreas was our first visit to Grand Theft Auto 5's setting of Los Santos, and was Rockstar's largest open world to date at the time of its release.A mobile and tablet version follows similar conversions for GTA3 and GTA: Vice City, which have both made the leap to smaller screens - albeit with mixed results.Perhaps in acknowledgement at the sometimes-dodgy touch controls found in earlier conversions, San Andreas will feature three different layout options plus a reworked checkpoint system.Once again, Rockstar has remastered the game's graphics, expanded its draw distance and updated character and vehicle models.

Brits who've been yearning for the Nokia Lumia 1520 will soon get their chance. The supersized Windows Phone is now due to reach the UK on December 6th, when it will be available through O2 at retail and Vodafone through the web. Third-party retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u will also stock the 6-inch flagship. While the exact pricing will vary, Vodafone will sell the phone for ÂŁ80 when it's attached to a ÂŁ38 per month plan and a 2-year contract; it will be available for free if you subscribe to a beefy ÂŁ47 plan. The 1520 will undoubtedly be one of the more expensive handsets in the country, then, but it may be worthwhile for those who want one of Nokia's most powerful devices.

Sure, it's not the first Assassin's Creed title to make it to mobile, but hey, it's the first one with pirates to hit your handset. On December 5th, you'll be able to download Assassin's Creed: Pirates on Android and iOS for $5. You'll be playing as captain, naturally, commanding a pirate ship and combatting with other vessels while looking for buried treasure. It will also feature characters from Ubisoft's other pirate-themed title, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. According to the game developer, the title uses a new 3D graphics engine made specifically for phones and tablets -- don't expect a PC or console-compatible version. While you'll have to wait till next week to start playing, you can watch the trailer here now.

If you've used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you've dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft's move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.
Once the hiccups are fixed, users can expect syncing across devices to avoid any random bursts of old, already-read messages. Kunins also said that continuous notifications will run only on the device you're currently using, as opposed to every Skype-running gadget you own. Few things are more headache-inducing than five different devices ringing at once, after all. Finally, Kunins hinted that the Skype app for Windows 8.1 will have "a lot of fun things" to offer. Stay tuned.

November 26th, 2013, 01:42 Posted By: wraggster
Arguably the most notable characteristic of the iPhone 5s is the TouchID fingerprint sensor, which lets you unlock your phone and authorize app purchases simply by resting a pre-authenticated fingertip on the home button. It turns out, however, that Apple might've had plans for the technology that go far beyond just that. According to a patent application filed with the World International Property Organization, the Cupertino company may use TouchID's sensor technology to transform the Home button into a trackpad, similar to the ones on BlackBerry's older line of Curve handhelds. Indeed, the patent filing describes how users could navigate the phone by "revolving" or "twisting" their fingerprint on the button's sensor. Additionally, the sensor could measure the length of time and amount of pressure that is placed on it, which might lead to more interesting use-cases in apps or games.
What's even more intriguing, however, is that the document goes on to describe how the entire display can be used to read your fingerprints. This sounds like a crazy idea at first, but if implemented, the phone would then know exactly which finger of which hand is on the screen. This could lead to certain actions mapped to specific digits -- perhaps a long-press of your index finger could launch Maps, while a pinch of your pinky and thumb could open up Messages, for example. A few diagrams from the patent application show how screen-wide fingerprint recognition could be used for playing a piano or touch-typing on the virtual keyboard. If you're concerned that this could lead to serious battery drain, the patent even addresses that, stating that the phone would be smart enough to recognize when it's in moments of fingerprint recognition (i.e. "enhanced sensitivity") or when it's normal everyday use, otherwise known as "reduced sensitivity."
Further, it seems that enhanced sensitivity could just be restricted to small screen areas so that only certain apps -- like banking or email perhaps -- would be cloaked in that extra layer of protection. Of course, just because such functionality is filed away in a patent application doesn't mean we'll see this in real life. However, taken with the promise of Apple's recent acquisition, we'll admit we're very interested to see how the iPhone 6 will turn out. Those interested in patent minutiae can go ahead and peruse the rather lengthy 612-page document in the link below.

Free-to-play puzzle RPG adventure Doctor Who: Legacy will be released on iOS and Android this Wednesday (November 27th).
Details about the BBC Worldwide, Tiny Rebel Games and Seed Studio co-production remains reasonably scant, although it appears that it will be episodic.
The game will launch with a raft of “episodes and characters” from the sixth and seventh series and content stemming from series five will arrive in the New Year. It looks as is the game will then continue all the way back to the William Hartnell era from the 1960s.
It will also feature Murray Gold’s iconic soundtrack from the TV series.
“The 11th (or is it 12th?) Doctor’s regeneration is approaching fast,” Tiny Rebel Games creative director and co-founder Lee Cummings stated. “With decades of epic adventures to draw from, Doctor Who: Legacy is a loving homage created by loyal Whovians, and is rich in the show’s creative legacy and fun.
“Combining easy to learn, hard to master mechanics with beloved characters and cunning villains, Doctor Who: Legacy will be a treat for fans, casual players and even the most hard-core gamers alike.”

A new eight-inch Nokia tablet is rumoured to follow the recently announced Lumia 2520.
The Lumia 2020 has been rumoured for a Q1 2014 release by sources talking to Digitimes.
Compared to the 10.1-inch Lumia 2520, the smaller 2020 will also apparently boast a higher-end set of specs and, like the 2520, will “target the mid-range to high-end segment”.
Like the 2520, the 2020 will run on Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 operating system.
While official confirmation and details concerning the Lumia 2020 are yet to emerge, the Lumia 2520 has had a Q4 2013 release and $499 (ÂŁ309) pricetag confirmed by Nokia.
