Eager to go on a driving trip to an exotic locale? You'll be glad to hear thatGoogle Maps Navigation is now available in 25 more countries. Most of the additions are in Africa, including Libya, Somalia and Tunisia. The rest of the coverage is scattered across the globe: Caribbean travelers can find their way through Guadeloupe and Haiti, while European visitors can navigate Andorra, Croatia and Serbia. There's even support for relatively remote places like Bhutan and Vanuatu. Maps Navigation still isn't a truly global service when it reaches 99 countries, but it now reaches far enough that it will be a surprise if you can't get your bearings while traveling abroad.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, the ghostly puzzler from Capcom, is available in full for just $1 on iOS. We're not telling you that you have to get it, but you have to get it. We played the DS version in 2011 and gave it a our highest marks, comparing it to the Phoenix Wright games in storyline and character style.
The iOS version is free to try, with all of the chapters normally under in-app purchases totaling $15. In celebration of the holidays, you can grab all of the chapters and have yourself a grand old ghost-detective time for $1. You don't want to disappoint the holidays, now do you?

Devouring all those brains must have instilled some growing intelligence in PopCap's undead horde, as the free-to-play Plants Vs Zombies 2 has been updated with a number of clever fixes and additions.
Most notable are the game's user interface changes. The PvZ2 map has been redesigned to make it easier for players to read, while in that same vein PopCap has introduced a number of smaller tweaks that should make it easier for players to "know how much you've done, where you're going, and what loot you'll get along the way."
In the realm of the truly new, PopCap has introduced a fast-forward button that speeds both planting times and the advancing zombie hordes. Likewise, the studio has also introduced new "Piñata Party" stages which offer big prizes, though this positive is counterbalanced by an ominous warning that this update has somehow made it more likely for players to encounter the gigantic, ultra-tough Gargantuar zombies during normal gameplay.
If you haven't already been introduced to the life-draining, productivity-smashing joys of Plants Vs Zombies, now is a great time to do so. You can find free-to-play iterations of Plants Vs Zombies 2 on both iTunes and Google Play, and while both are supported by microtransactions, it's entirely possible to play the game from start to finish without ever spending a dime.

A free-to-play Family Guygame is coming to iOS and Android devices, GameSpot reports. This is just like that time that ... uh ... somebody did ... something. Look, there's a reason we're not Family Guy writers.
Actually, it's kind of like that time Fox released The Simpsons: Tapped Out. TheFamily Guy game is being developed by TinyCo. and will feature in-app microtransactions which will allow players to "control the speed of their progression." GameSpot describes it as an "adventure/simulation" game, but what there is to simulate in the Family Guy world is a little more questionable. Fighting giant chickens, maybe?
The as-of-yet-unnamed Family Guy game will be (probably) farting and bringing edgy humor to your mobile device sometime in 2014.

Peter Eckersley at the EFF reports that the 'App Ops' privacy feature added to Android in 4.3 has been removed as of 4.4.2. The feature allowed users to easily manage the permission settings for installed apps. Thus, users could enjoy the features of whatever app they liked, while preventing the app from, for example, reporting location data. Eckersley writes, 'When asked for comment, Google told us that the feature had only ever been released by accident — that it was experimental, and that it could break some of the apps policed by it. We are suspicious of this explanation, and do not think that it in any way justifies removing the feature rather than improving it.1 The disappearance of App Ops is alarming news for Android users. The fact that they cannot turn off app permissions is a Stygian hole in the Android security model, and a billion people's data is being sucked through. Embarrassingly, it is also one that Apple managed to fix in iOS years ago.

Users of Apple's Safari browser are at risk for information loss because of a feature common to most browsers that restores previous sessions. The problem with Safari is that it stores session information including authentication credentials used in previous HTTPS sessions in a plaintext XML file called a Property list, or plist, file. The plist files, a researcher with Kaspersky Lab's Global Research and Analysis Team said, are stored in a hidden folder, but hiding them in plain sight isn't much of a hurdle for a determined attacker. 'The complete authorized session on the site is saved in the plist file in full view despite the use of https,' said researcher Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky on the Securelist blog. 'The file itself is located in a hidden folder, but is available for anyone to read.

Sony has unveiled a Christmas tree that’s decorated with lights that users can control with their smartphone.
The Sony NFC Christmas Tree uses Near Field Communication and any NFC-compatible smartphone to change the colour of its lights.
There is also a portable NFC speaker hidden within the tree so users can play music.
The tree is currently not available to buy. Instead it can be won by taking part in a competition on the Sony Mobile UK Facebook page.
Belkin has also been getting in the festive spirit by releasing the WeMo Switch and WeMo Switch + Motion so users can control lights on their tree from their smartphone or tablet.

Consumers searching for tablets, smartphones and console games for Christmas gifts are most likely to end up with a fake product instead, a study has found.
KPMG, which conducted the investigation into counterfeit products, said that London is one of the top cities affected by bogus goods, with the capital’s High Street performance suffering as a result.
Eight out of the 12 top fake gifts were readily available in London.
KPMG’s ‘counterfeit Christmas index’ was as follows:
1) DVD – movie in current Top 10 chart
2) Console game – in current Top 10 chart
3) Toy
4) Tablet
5) Smartphone
6) High end trainers
7) Leading designer sunglasses
8) Leading designer handbag
9) High-end branded watch
10) High-end branded perfume
11) High-end branded lipstick
12) Branded jeans
KPMG also stated that issues caused by fake products were as rampant on the internet as offline.
“The High Street may be in slightly better health than it was a year ago, but its recovery is under sustained attack from counterfeiters determined to prey on the pressure many people feel to ‘deliver the goods’ to their loved ones at Christmas,” commented David Eastwood, global and UK head of KPMG’s intellectual property practice.
“It may be true that everybody loves a bargain, but the damage to society and cost to health of buying fraudulent and fraudulently obtained goods should never be understated.”
“As counterfeiters look to cash in on shoppers trying to stretch their limited budgets it is vital that Customs and companies continue to tighten anti-counterfeit measures making it harder for fake goods to find their way onto our streets.”

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga has arisen on iOS today.Spanning through the stories of all six films, this epic undertaking contains 120 characters across 36 stages.Episode One: The Phantom Menace is free, while the other stages are available as in-app purchases with the whole shebang costing $18.99 (about £12)."If you haven't played the other Lego SW titles, and you fancy a bit of straightforward, enjoyable platform action, this is an essential purchase," wrote Ellie Gibson in her review of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga upon its Wii release in 2007. Back then it was £40. Now it's only a fraction of that, though you'll have to contend with touch controls.

Valve has updated its Steam iOS app to version 1.3, adding offline chat, push notifications and an overhauled friends list interface. On top of that, invites have now been moved to a separate section of the app and you can more easily tell if your online friends are on the mobile app or using Big Picture mode.
There's no indication whether these features will make their way into the Android app, which is currently at version 1.0.3. We've followed up with Valve and will update this post if we hear back.
The Steam mobile app launched early last year as a free download on Android and iOS. You can use the app to talk to your Steam friends, browse the Steam store and peruse community groups.

Normally news of a second The Room would tear us apart, Lisa, but this is Fireproof Games' follow-up to last year's mysterious, acclaimed puzzler, and it's out right now. You, Lisa, and everyone else can enter The Room 2 on iPad, provided you have the key - the key being $5 spare in your App Store wallet. iPhone and Android users will have to sit and wait outside The Room 2, as it won't unlock on their devices until sometime next year.
The game's App Store description doesn't give too much away in terms of plot, asking players to "follow a trail of cryptic letters from an enigmatic scientist known only as 'AS' into a compelling world of mystery and exploration." It doesn't require a detective to work out that fans of the first game can expect more elaborate mysteries to decipher and plenty more fiddly locks to open, all rendered in a tactile 3D engine.
Fireproof will be hoping to repeat the success of the first game, which picked up Apple's iPad Game of the Year award and sold over 2 million units. To celebrate the second game's release, Fireproof is making The Room free on theApp Store for a limited time.

Right on time, AT&T has launched its 300 Mbps GigaPower internet service in Austin. The fast U-Verse tier is available now to residents in "eligible" neighborhoods, while others can vote fiberhood-style for a deployment in their area. A free upgrade to 1 Gbps is still due sometime in 2014. Just don't expect a traditional approach to pricing. To get GigaPower service at a Google Fiber-rivaling $70 per month, you'll have to let AT&T target its web ads based on your browsing and search histories; Austinites uncomfortable with such tracking will have to shell out $99 per month for otherwise identical speeds. We imagine that some won't like the ad-subsidized business model, but it may be a small price to pay for locals who aren't willing to wait for Google's take on high-speed fiber.

Longtime Sonic the Hedgehog fans can look forward to a key piece of series history surfacing in the upcoming remastered iOS and Android versions of the classic 16-bit platformer Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as the new mobile ports will include a finished, playable version of the game's long-lost Hidden Palace Zone.
Originally planned as a bonus level showcasing Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic after collecting the game's seven Chaos Emeralds, the Hidden Palace Zone was scrapped midway through Sonic 2's development. The level's remnants later surfaced in a prototype version distributed as a downloadable ROM file, sparking fan discussion and speculation for years afterward.
The mobile version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is developed by Sonic Retro members Simon Thomley and Christian Whitehead, creator of the "Retro Engine" that powered the multiplatform Sonic CD port released for Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, PC and mobile platforms in 2011. Whitehead is known to incorporate cut content in his modern-day Sonic ports; the recentSonic the Hedgehog remake for iOS and Android featured an expanded debug mode giving access to items scrapped from the original game, and his Sonic CDadaptation hinted at a revival for Sonic 2's lost Dust Hill Zone.
The Hidden Palace Zone is featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's upcoming Android release, and is included in a free update replacingSonic the Hedgehog 2's previous port on iOS. Both the new Android version and the iOS update are launching tomorrow.

According to unnamed sources, Nokia is working on an Android-based smartphone. The test versions of the device, which is codenamed 'Normandy,' run a heavily modified version of Android. In late November, @evleaks posted an alleged image of the phone, which (if accurate) includes many of the Nokia design hallmarks, such as a brightly colored shell and prominent rear camera. Exactly how the software differs from the 'standard' version of Android is an open question, although other companies that have forked the operating system (most notably Amazon, with its Kindle tablets) haven't been shy about modifying the user interface in radical ways. According to AllThingsD, Nokia's 'low-end mobile phone unit' is overseeing the project. 'Normandy aims to repurpose the open-source version of Android into a better entry-level smartphone than Nokia has had with its current Asha line,' the publication explained, 'which is based on the aging Series 40 operating system.' But here's the rub: Nokia's phone unit is well on its way to becoming a Microsoft subsidiary. Microsoft competes against Google in many arenas, including mobile and search. The idea of a Microsoft ancillary producing an Android-based phone to compete in lower-end markets — where cheap Android phones dominate — is liable to provoke a burst of surprised laughter from anyone in tech: surely such a project would never hit store-shelves, given Microsoft's very public backing of Windows Phone as its sole mobile OS. And yet, there's also reason to think Microsoft might actually take a chance on an alternative OS. Over the past few years, the company's legal team has cornered the majority of Android manufacturers worldwide into a stark deal: agree to pay a set fee for every Android device produced, or face a costly patent-infringement lawsuit. As a result of that arm-twisting, Microsoft already makes quite a bit of money off Android (more, perhaps, than it earns selling Windows Phone), which could acclimate it to the idea of taking the leap and actually selling Android devices.

Apple has been awarded a patent detailing a method for creating curved touch surfaces, which could be used in displays.
The patent, which was originally filed for in 2010, specifically includes use of the technology in “touch sensor panels”, “computing systems”, “display devices” and “touch mouse devices”, and could lead to further rumours of an ‘iWatch’ smartwatch device from the company.
Apple’s patented method differentiates itself from existing manufacturing methods for curved touch surfaces use a flat touch sensor under a curved piece of glass, meaning that recognition of touches can be distorted. Apple instead curves the touch surface itself, meaning such sensitivity issues should be eliminated.
The patent also covers the curving of already curved surfaces – for instance, raising a screen in a series of bubbles to recreate a keyboard-like experience for typing onscreen.
If Apple does decide to use the tech in a future iPhone or iPad, it will go up against the recently announced curved devices from LG and Samsung.

Aldi has sold out of its budget own-brand tablet just 24 hours after it launched in the UK.
Aldi partnered with Medion to release the 7-inch tablet, which costs £79.99 and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
The device went on sale on Sunday 8th December, with the grocer warning that there was limited stock. Aldi has not confirmed how many Lifetab’s have been sold.
Aldi follows other retailers with own-branded tablets, including Tesco and Argos. Tesco revealed recently that its £120 Hudl tablet has already sold more than 300,000 and it expects that figure to double over the Christmas period.
