Think the 3GB of RAM in the Galaxy Note 3 was a lot? Samsung was only getting started. The company has just unveiled the first 8-gigabit (1GB) low-power DDR4 memory chip, which could lead to 4GB of RAM in a multi-layered, mobile-sized package. Moving to the higher-bandwidth (3.1Gbps) DDR standard should also provide a hefty 50 percent speed boost over existing DDR3-based chips, even though the new silicon uses 40 percent less power than its ancestors. Samsung is only promising mass production of the new RAM sometime in 2014, but it's already clear about the target audience. The technology will go into laptops, smartphones and tablets with Ultra HD displays, where additional memory will be crucial for powering all those extra pixels.

Google has big plans to put Android in cars, and will start by announcing a tie-up with Audi at CES 2014 next week, according to the WSJ. Its sources said that Android will power an in-car entertainment system for that automaker, which will run on hardware built directly into the car rather than your smartphone. The collaboration will also involve NVIDIA, and such a system would give you access to the same navigation, entertainment and communication functions available on your handheld device. Audi recently announced LTE for select models, and a recent report from EE Times suggested that Google's had the automotive space squarely in its sights since Apple announced its iOS in the Car initiative supported by BMW, Daimler and others. We'll remain skeptical until we see a product demo, but it would be more surprising if Big G didn't do something with car companies to stymie its arch-foe.

Fitbit updated its iOS app today, bringing, perhaps most significantly, the ability to track "basic" activity on an iPhone 5s, without the company's proprietary wearable. Using Apple's motion-sensing M7 chip, the app'll track your steps, distance and the number of calories you've burned. You can also utilize features like food and weight tracking, fitness goals and add friends on the app by downloading it in the source link below and tapping on the "No Fitbit Yet? iPhone 5s tracks the basics" text. So you can start those New Year's resolutions now -- and, the company no doubt hopes, get in on the FitBit experience before picking up the wearable.

Nokia is clearly on a roll in the courtroom as of late -- following lawsuit wins in theNetherlands, the US and the UK, the company has landed a German injunctionbanning all of HTC's Android-based devices. The ruling lets Nokia provisionally block the sale of the One and other Google-powered hardware that allegedly infringes on a patent for peer-to-peer sharing over Bluetooth and NFC. HTC is expected to appeal the decision; Google is trying to invalidate the patent, but its move won't come in time to avoid or delay the ban. There won't be much else the two firms can do in the meantime. As with a similar defeat in March, HTC will have to either change features or strip them out to keep doing business.

At the mammoth Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in early January, it is expected that multiple computer makers will unveil systems that simultaneously run two different operating systems, both Windows and Android, two different analysts said recently. The new devices will introduce a new marketing buzzword called PC Plus, explained Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies. 'A PC Plus machine will run Windows 8.1 but will also run Android apps as well', Bajarin wrote recently for Time. 'They are doing this through software emulation. I'm not sure what kind of performance you can expect, but this is their way to try and bring more touch-based apps to the Windows ecosystem.' Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, suggests that PC Plus could get millions of consumers more comfortable with Android on PCs. 'Just imagine for a second what happens when Android gets an improved large-screen experience. This should scare the heck out of Microsoft.

Perhaps people are reading too much into Apple CEO Tim Cook's 'Big Plans' for 2014, but hopes are high that the New Year will bring a biggie-sized iPad. Over at Forbes, Anthony Wing Kosner asks, Will The Large Screen iPad Pro Be Apple's First In A Line Of Desktop Touch Devices?. 'Rumors of a large [12.9"] iPad are many and constant,' notes ComputerWorld's Mike Elgan, 'but they make sense only if the tablet is a desktop for schools.' Elgan adds, 'Lots of schools are buying iPads for kids to use. But iPads don't make a lot of sense for education. For starters, their screens are too small for the kinds of interactive textbooks and apps that Apple wants the education market to create. They're also too small for collaborative work. iPads run mobile browsers, rather than full browsers, so kids can't use the full range of HTML5 sites.' Saying that 'Microsoft has fumbled the [post-PC] transition badly,' Elgan argues that 'the battle for the future of education is likely to be between whatever Google turns the Chromebook into against whatever Apple turns the iPad into.'"

An update to the official page for Breath of Fire 6: Guardians of the White Dragons offers new story and gameplay details.
Pixelitis' translation of Inside-Games' report notes the presence of some Breath of Fire series staples. In BoF6, a force known as the Schwarz Empire has pillaged Dragnier, home of The Dragon Clan called Brood. The kingdom of Wyndia also returns as the home of Nina and the winged, human-like species known as the Wing Clan. Interestingly, Nina's wings appear to be missing from her initial BoF6 concept art. Ryu himself also appears to have been replaced with customizable male or female characters, though his dragon-oriented abilities will remain with the protagonist.
AI-controlled characters will join players in simplified, time-based battles. BoF6will also incorporate a town-building system, which will allow players to interact with the villages of other players in an unspecified way.
BoF6, the first numerical entry to the series since 2003, is planned for release on PC, Android and iOS devices this summer in Japan. A Western release has yet to be announced.

Mobile installments in RPG franchises aren't exactlyunheard of these days, but not every series is ready to trade in its controllers for a smartphone. In a recent addition to his Famitsu column, as translated by Siliconera, Square Enix mobile developer Takehiro Andou asked Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii about the possibility of Dragon Quest 11 reaching mobile devices.
"At the current stage, there are no talks about making DQ11 for smartphones," Horii replied. "I believe that there's still plenty left to overcome before we release a proper sequel for smartphones."
While consoles might be prioritized during the launch of DQ11, the majority of the series will reach iOS and Android devices in Japan, including this winter's port of Dragon Quest 10. Still, knocking around Slimes in DQ11 using a TV and tangible buttons sounds like a preferred starting point for the future installment.

Kotaro Yoshida, designer of the frantic, condensed take on lengthy RPGs known as Half-Minute Hero, is changing up his numerical restrictions in a new project called 100 Turn Hero. Famitsu's glimpse of the project, translated by Siliconera, notes that the game will take up its quest on January 17 on iOS devices for 100 yen ($.95).
If the name is to be taken literally, requiring players to slay enemies in stages with 100 turns or less would play fairly differently from Half-Minute Hero's frenzied, stab-first-ask-questions-later butchering of beasts.
Unforunately, Half-Minute Hero's sequel was never localized, so there's no guarantee 100 Turn Hero will be brought over to a Western audience.

One of the great things about the FCC is that the commission is obligated to reveal all of the newly minted and as-yet unannounced gadgets that pass through its hallowed halls. The latest to be shown is a Samsung tablet measuring in the 8-9-inch category. Naturally, all that the FCC is concerned with is if the unit's Bluetooth and WiFi modules are working properly, so we shall have to wait and see what the SM-T320 turns out to be. But considering that we've got CES in less than a week and MWC a month afterward, we doubt we'll be waiting long.

An anonymous reader notes that Apple has renewed its patent attack against Samsung, asking U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh to prohibit Samsung from selling over 20 different phones and tablets. Apple made a similar request after it won a$1 billion judgment in 2012, but Koh did not allow it. An Appeals court later ruled that Apple could resubmit its request if it focused on the specific features at the center of the 2012 verdict, and that's what we're seeing today. Apple's filing said, "Samsung’s claim that it has discontinued selling the particular models found to infringe or design around Apple's patents in no way diminishes Apple’s need for injunctive relief. ... Because Samsung frequently brings new products to market, an injunction is important to providing Apple the relief it needs to combat any future infringement by Samsung through products not more than colorably different from those already found to infringe.
