"If you own an Android phone, you may have inadvertently butt-dialed 911 from time-to-time. So, wonders Kix Panganiban, why don't our phones come with a universal 'Panic Button', that would make it just as easy to intentionally dial the police when it's truly needed? Panganiban envisions "a smartphone app that when triggered, would discreetly send out a distress message to contacts of your choice, and perhaps do some other functions that can get you out of bad (and maybe even life-threatening) situations." While a quick search reveals that some have taken a crack at appsthat put a Panic Button in smartphone users' hands, are there good reasons why such a feature isn't just standard on mobile devices? And, with GPS and always-watching and always-listening tech only becoming cheaper and more ubiquitous, how far out in the future is it before your person can be continuously remotely monitored like your residence, even while mobile, and what might that look like?"

If you're itching to join the Ouya revolution but haven't pulled the trigger at the Android microconsole's $99.99 price point, a coupon code issued today drops the unit's price to $59.99 with free shipping, marking its lowest price to date.
Use the coupon code "calamity" after adding the $99 console to your cart atshop.ouya.tv and you'll get a $40 discount on a new Ouya, with free shipping. Note that if you plan to pay using PayPal, you'll first need to log in and reach the store's final confirmation screen before you're given the option to input the code.
The Ouya earned over $8.5 million during its crowdfunding campaign last year, and now hosts a catalog of more than 500 free-to-try games. The discount code commemorates this week's launch of Killing Floor: Calamity, an Ouya-exclusive top-down shooter created by indie developer Tripwire Interactive.

Sony launched the companion app to its latest Ratchet & Clank adventure oniOS and Android this week, Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus. Free on both platforms, Before the Nexus is an endless runner in which players collect bolts while hopping between grind rails and avoiding obstacles.
The game ties in to Sony's November entry in the main series on PS3, in that Raritanium obtained in the mobile game can be synced with Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, allowing players to upgrade their weapons in the game at a faster pace. Before the Nexus includes a handful of gadgets and weapons from the series for players to collect as well. Given that our review looked fondly atInto the Nexus, noting that it felt like a "farewell" for the series, the mobile companion app may be a worthwhile download for players booting up the main game for the first time.

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 X-winged its way to freedom this week, not from the pork side but from the shackles of its 99c tag. The sci-fly sequel is the App Store's free app of the week, meaning for a limited you can purchase it permanently at no cost - it's got to be worth a beak at that price, no? Okay, no more pun-ishment. Really, that was the last one.
So, Angry Birds Star Wars 2 follows the original's formula, but with a bunch of new levels and characters, as well as the tactile addition of the Skylanders-likeTelepod toys. If you don't fancy it on iOS, even for free, it's also on Android, PC, and Windows Phone 8.
One place you won't find it or its predecessor in the near future is Facebook. This week, Rovio announced it's closing Angry Birds Star Wars on the social network in March 2014.

How low can you go? Production of the Aakash 4 tablet will begin in India in January 2014 and the device's price is set to be slashed later in the year from £24 (2,500 Indian Rupees) to £15 (1,500 Indian Rupees).
It's the latest version of the Aakash, which recently launched in the UK as the £30 UbiSlate 7Ci via English manufacturer Datawind.
"Aakash 4 has now been tendered for manufacturing," said telecom minister Kapil Sibal while addressing students at New Delhi's Modern School.
"From January 2014, Aakash 4, which is like any other modern tablets in the country, is going to be manufactured by several players."
"The cost of [the tablet] at the moment we say is 2,500 Indian Rupees but its going to come down to 1,500 Indian Rupees."
18 manufacturers have been tendered for the contract, for which bidding opens today (December 20th).
Sibal added that after around five to seven years, there will be enough Aakash tablets for every school children in India.
The Aakash 4 will have a seven-inch scratch resistant touch screen, a front camera, Bluetooth, 4GB of internal storage with room to expand this to up to 32GB externally, and 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity.

After a disappointing delay, the mini console has been launched today just in time for Christmas.
FINALLY – the GameStick from PlayJam has been unleashed in the UK, after the rollout was delayed due to a small number of teething issues.
Originally set for release in October, the ultra portable games console, built to bring the best Android games to your TV set, is priced at £79.99, with games averaging at around £1.99.
PlayJam is aiming to target Christmas shoppers who are looking for a more affordable alternative to the PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, aimed at the whole family.
Jasper Smith, CEO of PlayJam, said: “It’s been a close run thing but we are delighted to have GameStick on the shelves in time for Christmas. Being honest, we could have had less daunting rivals vying for shelf space, but we do have the added advantage of being in stock and aimed at a very different audience to your typical core gamer so we welcome the challenge.â€

Yes, Apple's mobile platform lets you use iPhone apps on the iPad, but there's nothing like having one that's designed to take advantage of the excess real estate found on a tablet's display. With this in mind, Livestream today is releasing a new, universal version of its iOS application, complete with iPad optimization and a number of novel features in tow. Naturally, larger-screen compatibility is among the app's main highlights, while the rest focus on allowing users to easily launch broadcasts and watch real-time content. iOS devices can stream video in HD over 3G, 4G and WiFi -- and that includes being able to choose from a variety of live filters, share events on popular social networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), chat with viewers and, for those invested in the company's ecosystem, even use it asLivestream Broadcaster remote.
We had a chance to spend some time with the application and were pleased to see how well it performs, particularly during live streams, which is no surprise as that's its bread and butter. Creating an event and getting a broadcast on the air using an iPad mini took no more than 10 seconds, making it a pretty powerful tool for someone looking to record and share videos on the go -- Livestream points to citizen journalism as a perfect example of how the app could be well utilized. Max Haot, CEO of Livestream, told us that the development of the iPad-enhanced app is part of his team's goal to have a strong presence across the many existing platforms. "Our mission is to bring all kinds of events to audiences from all over the world."

UK developer creating endless runner based on popular downloadable stunt game series
First, No Man's Sky. Then a collaboration with Four Door Lemon on Vita versions of Joe Danger 1 and 2. And now Hello Games has announced a third project.
The UK developer is working on Joe Danger Infinity, an endless runner for iOS, according to IGN. It will follow the success of Joe Danger Touch, the stuntman's first outing on mobile platforms.
Infinity will apparently have Joe and more than 20 new toy characters performing stunts in a variety of settings, including bedroom floors and a Christmas dinner table.
Hello Games said: "As the name Infinity suggests, this is a Joe Danger featuring endless gameplay. It's the biggest Joe Danger we've ever made, and we're going to be adding more and more to it."
No release date has been given yet, with only the vague promise of "soon". Given the inclusion of a Christmas level, don't be surprised if this goes live before the year is out.

Tripwire Interactive has released a new Killing Floor game, and it's probably not what you'd expect. Called Killing Floor: Calamity, the game departs from Killing Floor's established (and kind of gross) monster-murdering formula, trading a first-person perspective for overhead arcade action.
Another unexpected shift, while the original Killing Floor is a PC, Mac and Linux game, Calamity is an Ouya exclusive. Killing Floor: Calamity offers couch co-op for two players, lots of weapons, plenty of upgradeable perks, nine maps and, of course, hordes of nasty zombie things to slaughter.
The free trial version offers one map, and the full game can be purchased for $15.

We knew it was coming, now it's almost here. Apple has confirmed that the new Mac Pro will go on sale from tomorrow, starting at $3,000. For that, you'll get a 3.7GHz quad-core Xeon CPU ("with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.9 GHz"), 12GB DRAM, two AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, and a 256GB SSD. As usual, you'll be able to order online via Apple's online store, through various resellers and, perhaps most importantly, Apple's retail stores. While there's no word on whether you'll be able to walk out of an Apple Store with a Mac Pro tomorrow, the fact that it'sassembled in the US suggests that could be the case, at least in the States. We've contacted Apple for clarification and will update you when we know more.

Microsoft appears to be taking a page from Google's approach to core software updates: It just launched standalone Xbox Music and Xbox Video apps for Windows Phone 8 users. The music app (currently deemed a preview) is largely what we've seen in Microsoft's integrated software, but it also lets you edit playlists and sync radio stations. A completed version is due in 2014, the company says. The video client, meanwhile, resurrects functionality that hasn't been a part of the OS since Windows Phone 7; you can now download or stream Xbox Video content directly from your handset, with playback syncing between phones, PCs and game consoles. There's no certainty that Xbox Music and Xbox Video represent the first steps toward OS-independent media apps in the rumored Windows Phone 8.1upgrade, but you can at least try them today.

Camouflaj's stealthy crowdfunded game Republique will launch this Thursday, December 19 on iOS. Republique Director Ryan Payton noted in an interview with IGN that the game's PC and Mac versions will arrive next year.
Republique earned $555,662 on Kickstarter in May 2012 and features both David Hayter and Jennifer Hale as voice actors. The indie action game, which resurfaced in February with new 3D backgrounds as opposed to its original pre-rendered ones, will cost $4.99 on the App Store.
The game stars Hope, "a young woman trapped within a shadowy totalitarian state," drawing inspiration from George Orwell's classic novel 1984. Players take control of "Big Brother," protecting Hope and guiding her through the game by influencing the environment through unlocking doors, powering down lights and tapping phone calls.

A mobile botnet called MisoSMS is wreaking havoc on the Android platform, stealing personal SMS messages and exfiltrating them to attackers in China. Researchers at FireEye lifted the curtain off the threat on Monday, describing MisoSMS as 'one of the largest advanced mobile botnets to date' and warning that it is being used in more than 60 spyware campaigns. FireEye tracked the infections to Android devices in Korea and noted that the attackers are logging into command-and-controls in from Korea and mainland China, among other locations, to periodically read the stolen SMS messages. FireEye's research team discovered a total of 64 mobile botnet campaigns in the MisoSMS malware family and a command-and-control that comprises more than 450 unique malicious e-mail accounts.

Chuong Nguyen reports that Apple is forcing developers to adopt iOS 7's visual UI for their apps, and has advised iOS developers that all apps submitted after February 1, 2014 must be optimized for iOS 7 and built using Xcode 5 ... 'It's likely that Apple is more anxious than ever for developers to update their apps to fit in visually and mechanically with iOS 7, as it's the largest change in the history of Apple's mobile software,' says Matthew Panzarino. 'iOS 7 introduced a much more complex physical language while stripping out many of the visual cues that developers had relied on to instruct users. For better or worse, this has created a new aesthetic that many un-updated apps did not reflect.' Most app developers have been building apps optimized towards iOS 7 since Apple's World Wide Developer Conference in June 2013. Apple has been on a push over the past couple of years to encourage developers to support the latest editions of its OS faster than ever. To do this, it's made a habit of pointing out the adoption rates of new versions of iOS, which are extremely high. Nearly every event mentions iOS 7 adoption, which now tops 76% of all iOS users, andApple publishes current statistics. In order to optimize apps for the new operating system, they must be built with the latest version of Xcode 5 which includes 64-bit support and access to new features like backgrounding APIs.

Apple has patented a computer that would do away with a monitor in place of an integrated projector.
The ‘desk-free’ computer would include a projector inside the system’s case alongside components such as a processor and memory.
The device is designed to be mobile, envisioned as using wireless connections to peripherals such as speakers, mice and keyboards.
In Apple’s ideal situation, even a power supply would be cable-less, using an ‘inductive charge system’ or similar technology to ensure that the box is a portable and hassle-free device.
The built-in projector would also be able to adjust for optimum viewing on whichever surface was being used as a display, with ambient light and viewing angle calculated.
Originally filed in 2008, it has taken five years for the patent to be granted. How long it will take before we see such a system – if ever – is yet to be seen.

The importance of convenience overrides the safety of devices.
32 per cent of mobile owners have their bank or credit card linked to their devices, however half do not have any security in place.
39 per cent think that the convenience of mobile shopping overrides any security concerns, reveals Tripwire.
The study also revealed that 36 per cent of consumers have their mobile device linked to a corporate network, which are a lot of the time unsecure – yet 18 per cent don’t protect their device. Even though 17 per cent admitted to holding secure business data on their mobile.
Gavin Millard, technical director EMEA at Tripwire, said: “The results from our survey highlight the fact that consumers are still nor recognising that cybercriminals are targeting mobile devices to collect personal information and for financial gain.
“Because mobile devices are linked to corporate networks and credit cards whilst storing a huge amount of private data, there is a much greater need to keep them secure and protected.â€

If you've been getting your Minecraft fix on the go via the mobile-exclusiveMinecraft: Pocket Edition, consider this your lucky day: A new, free update has added minecarts, rails and a host of other additions to this portable member of the Minecraft family.
The biggest additions are obviously the minecarts, rails and powered rails that should make setting up your own blocky mining business a relatively simple affair. New blocks have also been added to the game, lending your creations iron bars, new versions of wood, haybales and other items. Likewise, the virtual pantry has expanded and now players will find foods such as carrots, potatoes and pumpkins - some or all of which can be used in new cooking recipes.
Amazon's listing for the game has a full run-down on all the new additions, though if you'd prefer your game to come from a slightly different multinational corporation, you could always try Google Play or the iOS App Store to feed your blocky addiction.
