It's also the only major country where Google Play and iOS are tied for profit.
Japan is a trailblazer when it comes to technology, recognised as a leader of 4G adoption, while 42 per cent of locals own smartphones – up from 28 per cent in 2012.
Given that, new data from App Annie shows Japan has overtaken the US for app store revenue leadership as consumers continue to leave feature phones behind.
It's a remarkable achievement, particularly when you consider 39 per cent of Americans owned smartphones last year, which is now up to 44 per cent.
Furthermore, the Japanese population of 127 million is less than half that of America's 317m.
App Annie says one of the key reasons for the turnaround is because Japanese consumers have been familiar with making digital purchases on advanced feature phones, which has made the transition to smartphone purchases pretty seamless.
Interestingly, Japan is also the only major country where app spend on Google Play is on par with App Store, which is a massive change of direction from a year ago when iOS doubled Android.
There a five stand-out publishers leading monthly game revenue, including GungHo Online – whose Puzzle and Dragons game has topped 20m downloads andpartnered with Angry Birds – messaging company Line, Colopl, Sega and Namco Bandai.
The share of Japanese smartphone users is set to hit 62 per cent in 2014, overtaking the US in that sector too, as America is set to hit 50 per cent next year.

Grand Theft Auto's PS2/Xbox era swan song, San Andreas, is making its way to iOS tonight.
Priced at $9.99 (about £7), this mobile port of Rockstar's sprawling open-world variant of Los Angeles sports enhanced graphics with improved lighting and character models. Furthermore, it offers three different control schemes, with virtual analogue sticks, support for made-for-iOS controller attachments, and context sensitive button prompts that only appear when you need them. You'll also be able to use your own customised soundtrack by creating a playlist entitled "GTASA", then launching the game and selecting the radio station "Mixtape".Android, Windows Phone and Kindle versions of San Andreas are still on the way.Last time Rockstar ported a GTA game to mobile with Vice City, it was met with mixed results. "This ongoing quest to force the GTA series into touch-screen play, replicating multiple joypad controls via transparent buttons, feels like a wasted effort when we could be seeing what Rockstar's boundless imagination and ambition could do with a game specifically designed for this sort of platform," wrote our Dan Whitehead when he mildly recommended the port in spite of its foibles in his App of the Day writeup.

TinyCo has joined up with 20th Century Fox to develop a mobile game based the Family Guy TV show.
In collaboration with the Family Guy writers at Fuzzy Door, TinyCo is working on a free-to-play game for mobile devices for launch in 2014.
The game is said to contain an original story with role-playing elements. Side missions in the game will be like episodes of the Family Guy show, with new content to be added for 'years' after its release.
"The reason why people love Family Guy is because it's funny," TinyCo senior game designer Chelsea Howe told GamesBeat. "All of the mechanics works to serve that idea. Our design goal has been a 'laugh every session.' That was an inspirational goal for the design team, and as we play-test it, it is becoming the reality."
Few actual gameplay details have been released, and TinyCo has offered no images other than the above art.

To celebrate over 500,000 downloads, Square Enix's vampire hunt-em-up,Bloodmasque, is free on iOS this week. The app will be a free download until midnight on December 16.
Bloodmasque is set in the nineteenth century, in the vampire-ruled city of Paris. As a champion of justice, you must sweep the streets of bloodsuckers as you recruit other players into your army of would-be stakers. The game, compatible with iPhone 4S, iPad 2 devices and above, features a photo-based character creation system where you can put your face into the game. We wonder what would happen if tried to put himself into the game?

Marat Fayzullin has released another version of its GameBoy Advance emulator VGBA-Android.
Quote:
Starting this week with a VGB-Android 3.9.11 release. VGB-Android is my GameBoy Color, GameBoy Classic, and Super GameBoy emulator:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=com.fms.vgb
The new release adds a bunch of hardware emulation options, previously only available from the rather unfriendly Advanced Settings menu. Among other things, you can now tell VGB to use "washed out" colors, just like the original GameBoy Color did with its reflective color LCD. I have also changed the action bar style to match the toolbar and added a proper icon to the parent directory entries in the File Selector.
- Added "Hardware Options" screen to the Settings.
- Added new-styled action bar, consistent with toolbar.
- Added Pocket Printer emulation option to the Settings.
- Added "Delay Line Interrupts" option to the Settings.
- Added "Check Cartridge CRC" option to the Settings.
- Added "Use Washed-Out Colors" option to the Settings.
- Added proper icon for the parent directory ("..") entry.
- Added missing string translations.
- Added DropBox application icons.
