You don't have to hold onto hope for that truly unlocked iPhone 5s any longer -- it's now available to buy on Apple's site. To be clear, this version of Apple's Touch ID-imbued flagship comes completely free of any carrier attachment, separating it from the unlocked T-Mobile variant that ships with a Magenta nano-SIM inside. The SIM-free GSM handset, which'll ship within one to two weeks from order, is available in the standard 16GB/32GB/64GB storage and color configurations, so pricing remains the same at $649/$749/$849, respectively. But you'll still need to hitch your data ride to AT&T or T-Mobile for that fancy phone to work in the US. So, the strings... they're still attached. There are just fewer of them now.

Two sticks, four face buttons, a pair of shoulder paddles and a d-pad: the formula for a modern gamepad and the layout of MOGA's Ace Power controller. It's a pretty standard assortment of inputs, but this controller happens to be the first fully featured peripheral to support Apple's new iOS 7 gamepad protocols. Naturally, we couldn't wait to put the pad through its paces.
The MOGA Ace may have the normal assortment of buttons and triggers, but it has one trick most gamepads can't emulate: it telescopes. Taken out of the box, the Ace is hardly longer than an iPhone 5s, but pulling on either end stretches the peripheral to fit your iDevice. The Gamepad's left side retains enough tension to hold a device in place on its own, but our iPod had trouble identifying the controller unless we made a point of pushing the controller's edges inward to secure the connection. Once we had a compatible iOS 7 device locked in place, however, the Ace worked like a dream.

CNN reports that self-professed Apple fanatic Jonathan Zufi has published a book of photography profiling 500 of Apple's products through the years, because unlike other companies Apple has unapologetically focused on design says Zufi and he wants to celebrate that with his images. 'Other companies came up with the guts for a machine and then the engineers would find a way to stuff them into a box,' says Zufi. 'Steve Jobs started with the box and said, "You need to find a way to get the guts in."' It's an unlikely project for a software engineer with no formal photography training. Zufi bought new equipment and consulted with a professional as he began the project, which was four years in the making. 'I had a sudden memory of an old game I used to play in high school called Robot War,' says Zufi. 'I hopped on eBay to look for the game and an old Apple II to play it on, and that's how I ended up looking through old Apple products.' Zufi says that he approached each shot by looking for an image that would 'create that same emotional connection to that product, but maybe doesn't look like something you've seen before,' and says that his mission is to showcase the entire spectrum of products that Apple have sold to the public since 1976 – every desktop, every laptop, every notebook, monitor, iPod, iPad, iPhone, mouse, keyboard, modem, cable, port, adapter, docking station, memory expansion card — and that's just their hardware.

It's been three decades since M.U.L.E. was first released on the Atari 800, but we've got no time for wistful memories as the classic strategy game is slated to return on iOS in mere days, appropriately as M.U.L.E. Returns.
For those to whom the acronym means nothing, M.U.L.E. is something of a cross between Settlers of Catan and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. The goal ofM.U.L.E. is to thrive among the stars as a colonist on the planet Irata (that's "Atari" spelled backwards). Other colonists will be competing with you for resources, though they just as often can become valuable trading partners. At launch (and even today) M.U.L.E. was revered for its easy to learn, but difficult to master mechanics and near-infinite replayability - no mean feat for an Atari game released in 1983.
M.U.L.E.Returns makes its iOS debut on November 25. An Android version ofM.U.L.E. Returns is scheduled to appear at some point in 2014. M.U.L.E. Returns is said to feature new, HD graphics, online leaderboards, and a faithful reproduction of the rules of the Atari original.

Android and iOS are favourite platforms for all app developers.
32 per cent of active app developers have said that they will support the Windows Phone platform by next year, reports Strategy Analytics.
The figure is double that of this year, during which Android and iOS were the most popular platforms for developers to use, currently use and plan on using in the future.
David MacQueen, executive director, apps and media research for Strategy Analytics, said: “Naturally Android and iOS were the top platforms, with 84 per cent and 68 per cent respectively of developers targeting those platforms."
HTML5 ranked third in terms of developer support, with 33 per cent of developers creating for it this year. This is expected to rise to 43 per cent by the end of 2014. Although, more than a third actually use HTML5 as a tool to develop for other platforms.
Firefox is on its way up, showing the biggest rise with more than triple the developers planning on supporting the platform next year.
This is largely due to the launch of handsets in Latin America – who's economy gained $211 billion thanks to mobile this year - Spain and a few other markets around Europe.

Happy Birthday, Doctor Who. After 50 years on TV and a string of middling video game adaptations, how does the franchise's interactive future look?
In case you missed the news, the BBC recently announced it had canned its existing plans for Doctor Who games on home consoles - thanks in no part to 2011's disappointing Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. Originally designed as a trilogy, the intended second and third chapters have now been shelved."We will not be releasing any further Eternity Clock games, nor did any other go into production," the BBC's exec in charge of games, Paul Joffe, told Polygon. "We also have no current work with Supermassive. We do have Doctor Who games in the pipeline and we will be announcing these in due course."We're determined to focus on mobile, console didn't fit into the long term strategic vision in cases where BBC Worldwide would publish."Dan Whitehead labelled Supermassive's effort as "shambolic and underfed" in Eurogamer's regeneration-inducing Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock review. The Doctor's new focus on mobile devices is already evident in the upcoming release of free-to-play iOS/Android adventure Doctor Who: Legacy. In development by Tiny Rebel Games and Seed Studio, it's due for a full unveil this weekend, just in time for the 50th Anniversary. The upcoming Doctor Who: Legacy, which actually looks quite good.
There's also Doctor Who: Say What You See, available on iOS and Android. It includes artwork by ex-Rare concept artist Ryan Firchau, who worked on titles such as Conker: Live & Reloaded. If you live in the UK, the BBC's five episode run of The Adventure Games is still available to download for free on PC. These 3D action adventures won't tax an experienced gamer but do feature full voice acting by Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. And, if you've just got five minutes free, it's also worth checking today's playable Doctor Who-themed Google Doodle, which sees you evading Daleks and Cybermen in 11 of the Doctor's forms.

HTC's 5.9-inch One max is comparatively modest when it comes to the oversized smartphone horserace; it's actually dwarfed by Sony's monstrous Xperia Z Ultra. Still, if your hands are big enough to accommodate the One max's bulk and you're a Verizon subscriber, today's the day you can call it your own. The Big Red operator's offering the device for $300 with any new two-year agreement, or for $25 monthly installments on its Edge upgrade plan. Verizon's even bundled in a special SIM that's "ISIS-ready" so you can take advantage of the carrier's contactless payment (read: Google Wallet) alternative. The One Max offers mostly everything we love about the OG One it shares a heritage with, just in a heftier metallic chassis and with an oddly-placed fingerprint scanner. Sure there's plenty you can do with a big 'ol screen, but in this case, we'd argue the size of your hand matters more.

Samsung's other behemoth of a smartphone, the Galaxy Mega, is most definitely not one of the newest on the block. Still, we can't imagine why MetroPCS users would complain about having yet another Android device to choose from. Starting November 25th, the carrier is making the 6.3-inch handset available on its network, complete with LTE support (where available) and a $399 price tag at launch. It's worth mentioning that the MSRP is actually $499, but in the spirit of the holidays, MetroPCS is marking it at $100 less to kick things off -- new customers, meanwhile, can get it for as low as $349. You'll be able to snag one for yourself online or from the nearest brick-and-mortar store -- if big, really bigsmartphones are your thing, that is.

[h=1]Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, the HD remake of the 1990 Mega Drive classic, has made its way onto iOS.
Optimised for iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and above, the platforming adventure follows the exploits of Mickey Mouse as he tries to save Minnie from the nefarious witch Mizrabel.Given that this appears to be a straight port of the XBLA, PSN and PC game, it's a rather pricey affair at ÂŁ6.99 / $9.99.Our Ellie Gibson had a good time with the Castle of Illusion remake upon its release in September, even if she didn't think it remained as memorable now as it did back in the day. A word of warning: Ellie noted in her Castle of Illusion review that "it requires levels of timing, rhythm, precision and determination that would test a Soviet gymnast." Common logic dictates that these reflex-based challenges will only be harder on a touchscreen device.

Wearable devices will remain be the sidekick and not the hero, until at least 2017.
Even though devices such as the Galaxy Gear - which hit 800,000 sales in just two months – are in the limelight at the moment, the hype will not last according to Gartner.
Premium pricing paired with an unclear value proposition will drive customers more towards tablets and fitness bands, causing sales of smartwatches to plummet this holiday season.
Currently due to the lack of apps plus the bulky â€unstylish’ appearance of wearable gadgets, they will remain a companion device to other more user-friendly devices such as tablets and smartphones until at least 2017.
Annette Zimmermann, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: “Samsung and other well-known vendors have recently entered the smartwatch space, yet the products we’ve seen so far have been rather uninspiring in terms of design, available apps and features.”
However Gartner has said that some of the smartwatches currently available do have the potential to replace a smartphone as they benefit from all technologies down to cellular connectivity, message display, initiate voice calls and stream music.
However due to their primitive, bulky design, short battery life, and price they will struggle to achieve mass-market appeal.
Zimmer added: “Users expect more than just more convenience from a new product category that claims to be innovative and priced at $200 to $300. The same price will fund basic tablets with a good feature set.
“For the coming holiday season users are more likely to pick the basic tablet option rather than a smartwatch as the value proposition is clearer.”

Finally running on Windows Phone 8 – and it’s real.
Instagram has finally come to Nokia, entering onto the Lumia devices in the UK.
Only a few months ago a faux-instagram app called 6-tag, which included features similar to the photo sharing platform became available for Windows phone.
The main concern with the French-based app, was that information entered into it, was not being encrypted, and details such as usernames and authentication tokens were being sent back to its home server in France.
The recently released version however, is the real deal, and Nokia Lumia owners can now benefit from all much-loved features of Instagram.
The difference is, Windows Phone users will also benefit from Live Tiles, lock screen notifications, and support for fast-resume along with the well known features.
In related news, large brands such as Mercedes Benz, MTV and Nike have reported receiving high engagement rates when using Instagram.
The app is avaible now for free from the Windows Phone store.

When tablets make it easy to do work stuff, their triumph over PCs will be complete.
There's a scene In Woody Allen's Take The Money And Run in which He passes a note to the teller explaining that he has a gun. But his handwriting is appalling.
Teller: "What's this? Apt natural?"
Woody: "No, that's 'act natural'. I pointing a gun at you…"
Teller: "Gun? That looks like 'gub'. That's definitely a 'b'…"
And so on. Of course, since the film was made in 1969 hardly anyone hand writes anything any more. But that doesn't mean mistakes don't happen.
Have you ever received an email from someone using an iPad?
It usual read somethng lik this.
But then iPads weren't meant for productivity. They're for watching videos of or keeping your children from ever going outside.
No one would seriously base their work day around a tablet, right?
Well, the overwhelming success of the form factor is making some people question this received wisdom.
Clever apps, like Paper, OmniGraffle and Instaviz, use pinch, zoom and swipe to create pictures and graphs.
And don't forget, when Apple confirmed its all-time best selling apps to commemorate five years of the App Store this summer, there were three productivity titles in the top ten.
In among the Angry Birds and Fruit Ninjas were Keynote, Garage Band and – top of the list – Pages.
All of these apps are re-imagining productivity without mouse, cursor and (sometimes) keyboard.
Now, for some tasks only a keyboard will do. For me, the iPad onscreen version will always be a problem. I hate it.
Or should that be: I hat it.
Still, look around you and see how many people use it anyway (or buy a Bluetooth add-on) because they simply prefer to use their iPads whenever possible.
And if you don't trust anecdotal evidence, you can have some stats.
IDC reckons Q4 will see 84.1m tablets sold, against 83.1m PCs. It projects annual sales of PCs will outstrip tablets until 2015, when the latter will finally prevail.
That must be very distressing for the vendors still hammering away at the PC market. Not least Microsoft. The hardware decline is bad enough. Now imagine if productivity software migrated over to the new devices too.
I'm not suggesting that big enterprises will start making detailed spreadsheets on the Amazon Fire, but I can see plenty of execs knocking up charts and presentations on their BYOD devices.
What a conundrum for Microsoft. It doesn't yet offer a tablet-optimised version of Office. But you can imagine the internal debate about whether it should. I wonder what the post-Ballmer era will decide.
Perhaps MS is banking on Surface. With its kickstand, keyboard cover and full copy of Microsoft Office preinstalled, it's the ideal hybrid of two great form factors, right?
Well, either that or a mongrel that nobody wants. Sales seem to be pointing to the latter.
In the meantime the tablet market just keeps marching on. If it can become a platform for people to create as well as consume content, then its triumph over PCs will be complete.
Maybe I'll write my next column on my iPad.
I might say: if I do, it will be full of spelling mistakes, bad grammar and meaningless sentences.
And you might say: an improvement on the usual shit.

A crocodile version of the smartphone also available will be limited to just 500 devices worldwide.
BlackBerry - who backed out of all its buyout offers, declaring that it was no longer for sale thanks to a $1 billion investment - has announced a partnership with Porsche Design, to launch the all-touch P’9982 smartphone.
The smartphone is powered by a customised version of the BlackBerry 10.2 OS, made especially for the device.
The special operating system benefits from BlackBerry Priority Hub – allowing users to manage all conversations and notifications and filtering them to give immediate access to the most important messages.
BlackBerry Keyboard learns how the user types, what words they use the most and offers next word suggestions.
BBM Video with screen share improves video chatting by letting the owner swipe to share what’s on display.
BBM messages can be received and replied to without having to leave an app, or stop what you are doing on the device.
The smartphone also displays a showcase of essential apps for the P’9982 customer, including productivity apps, games, videos and music based on what apps have been downloaded.
The device boasts a satin finished frame forged from high-quality stainless steel, plus a hand-wrapped genuine Italian leather back door.
A special edition crocodile skin version will also be released, but limited to just 500 devices worldwide.
The device will be available from today in any Porsche Design store.

1979 Revolution, Ink Stories' 3D adventure game that places players in the midst of the tense Iranian protests of that year, will come to PC, Mac and Android. This is in addition to the game's initial platform of choice, iOS, which is being developed in Unity, making the transition to the other platforms easier for the developer.
The episodic indie game is currently seeking $395,000 by December 16 onKickstarter to launch its first episode, Black Friday. Those looking to back the project and obtain a PC or Mac version of 1979 Revolution will need to invest at least $20, whereas the iOS and Android reward tiers are listed at $15. Ink Stories' campaign is currently sitting at $56,163 in funding.

Sales of tablets in Western Europe more than doubled year-on-year in the first half of 2013, according to research firm Context, and the ever-popular mobile devices are set to once again become the top-sellers this Christmas.
But can they match the heights of last year, when during December they outsold laptops by around four to one?
“There is little doubt that consumers with money to spend on technology are choosing the form factor they have yet to acquire – namely a tablet,” comments Alex Tatham, sales and marketing director at Westcoast.
Nikhil Gohil, category manager at Staples, adds: “We certainly expect sales to peak significantly leading up to the Christmas period.”
Mark Hosgood, category manager for tablets, e-readers and projectors at Currys and PC World agrees with the prediction, saying: “We expect tablets to be just as popular this year as last year possibly even more given the amount of great products available.”
Adam Brown, tablets and telecoms buyer at John Lewis, is confident the retailer will see a lot of demand for tablets: “This year we’re going to have seen every big brand refresh their product line ready for Christmas, so I think this Christmas will see good growth versus last year.
“We’re certainly expecting a lot of demand – we’re forecasting to sell one tablet every 15 seconds over the Christmas period.”
Tesco recently launched its first own-branded tablet, the Hudl, and while many may have instantly groaned at the thought of a supermarket releasing a mobile device, it turns out the Hudl isn’t the low-spec budget tablet that its £119 price tag suggests.
While being less than half the price of an iPad Mini, the Hudl has a higher screen resolution, packing a 1440x900 pixel screen compared to the iPad Mini’s 1024x768. Coming in four different colours, some could argue it has the ability to appeal to a wider audience than just monochrome fans – something that Apple itself has addressed with the release of the iPhone 5S.

Apple is rumoured to be planning the release of a 12.9-inch iPad next year in order to complete with larger devices from its competitors.
According to sources, Apple suppliers in the country have been asked to produce 12.9-inch Retina displays ahead of the device’s launch.
“Apple’s local first-tier display supplier is now producing a 12.9-inch Retina Display to be used in the new iPad, which will be coming out sometime early next year,” an official from one of the firms told the Korea Times, explaining that the device would look to counter the release of bigger-screen tablets by Samsung and LG.
The source added that the screen would feature a resolution comparable to ultra HD.
“The 12.9-inch iPad will have improved picture quality. As the Apple partner intends to boost its lineup for displays that have almost ultra high-definition (UHD) quality, the upcoming iPad will provide very clear quality similar to that of UHD,” he added.
Sources from the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) had previously told the Korea Times that Samsung is developing larger-form tablets, with 10 and 13-inch OLED displays being produced for future iterations of the company’s Galaxy Tab devices.
“By diversifying its tablet lineup, Samsung plans to significantly narrow differences with Apple in the race. Samsung believes it also can dethrone Apple in tablets as it did in smartphones,” a source at Samsung told the publication.
