Google Play generates 25 per cent more downloads than App Store

Google Play racked up 25 per cent more downloads than the iOS App Store during the last quarter.

But according to App Annie, overall revenue on the marketplace was still significantly down on its Apple counterpart by some 50 per cent.

Despite smaller revenues, Google Play has actually closed the gap on the App Store, which reported 2.3x more revenue in the previous quarter.



Downloads for Google's app marketplace were driven by strong growth in Brazil and Argentina, with games the leading category in Brazil.

The top five countries driving revenue on Google Play were Japan, South Korea, USA, Germany and Taiwan.

The App Store meanwhile still continued its growth, with China and Russia helping boost the number of downloads.

USA, Japan, China, UK and Australia were the top countries by revenue on the App Store.

On both marketplaces, games continued to be the biggest driver of both downloads and revenues during the last quarter.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids tablet will launch in the UK this week with a price tag of £199.
The tablet, which comes with a 1.2GHz dual processor and 1GB RAM, we be available from Toys R Us, Argos, Shop Direct, Dixons, JLP and Asda.
The device comes pre-loaded with content such as educational games and e-book apps. It will be available from Friday, November 8th.

Android smartwatch from Android to arrive in December

The fashion watch company Android is to fittingly release an Android smartwatch.
The Google OS-compatible ‘Android SmartWatch’ will arrive in December and includes several of the features seen on smartwatches such as the Pebble and Samsung Galaxy Gear – such as music player controls, voice recording, the ability to answer calls and, obviously, the ability to tell the time.
The watch uses Bluetooth to connect to Android sm artphones, and includes a phonebook, pedometer, chronograph, world clock and voice memo mode.
No price or set release date has been announced, beyond the information that the watch will debut in December.

Three offers iPad Air in the UK

The mobile network Three is offering Apple’s new iPad Air to customers, following the tablet’s release last Friday.
The iPad Air offered by the company is the Wi-Fi and Cellular model, meaning a number of tariffs and contracts will be offered alongside the tablet.
The smaller iPad Mini with the Retina display, which was released at the same time as the Air, will also be available with Wi-Fi and Cellular later this month.
The mobile network joins O2, Vodafone and EE in offering Apple’s latest tablet.
Three has said that both the iPad Air and the Retina iPad Mini will be able to connect to its DC-HSPA+ 3G network, followed by its 4G network, which will be launched in December, at no extra cost.

Global tablet shipments up 36.7 per cent year-on-year

Android devices are eating into iPad's share of the pie.
New data from IDC shows global tablet shipments hit 47.6 million in Q3 2013, which is up seven per cent and 36.7 per cent quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year respectively.
While iPad is arguably the device that got the market moving, Apple's share fell from 40.2 per cent in 2012 to 29.6 per cent this year, the lowest to date.
iPad sales fell from 14.6 million in Q2 to 14.1 million in Q3 without any new devices to encourage interest, though the new iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display will look to pick up the slack ahead of Christmas.
Ultimately Android is responsible for the sales decline. Google OS-powered Samsung, Asus and Lenovo tablets all experienced shipment growth, with the former securing a 20.4 per cent share (9.7 million units) of the market and a 12.4 per cent share (4.3 million units).
Lenovo recently appointed Ashton Kutcher as a product engineer at the launch of its new Android-based Yoga Tablet line, while the OS has also been favoured by Tesco, Argos and Carphone Warehouse.
Jitesh Ubrani, research analyst with IDC's Tablet Tracker, said: "With two 7.9-inch models starting at $299 and $399, and two 9.7-inch models starting at $399 and $499, Apple is taking steps to appeal to multiple segments.
"While some undoubtedly hoped for more aggressive pricing from Apple, the current prices clearly reflect Apple's ongoing strategy to maintain its premium status. It's worth noting that Apple wasn't the only one to increase the price of its small-sized tablet during this product cycle: Both Google and Amazon increased the price of their newest 7-inch tablets from $199 to $229 to cover the higher costs associated with high resolution screens and better processors."

BlackBerry is not for sale: Bins CEO and secures $1bn investment

BlackBerry announced plans to sell itself in August, which was met with a $4.7 billion offer from investor Fairfax Financial.
The deal was provisionally accepted with a period of due diligence until November 4th, but followed by talks withGoogle and Facebook.
However, with the deadline now reached, the sale is off. Instead, BlackBerry says Fairfax and others will invest $1 billion into the struggling smartphone company and Fairfax will plough $250 million into the business.
Furthermore, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has been dumped and firmer Sybase boss John Chen has been appointed executive chair of BlackBerry's board of directors to drive the strategic direction and relationships of the company and act as interim CEO.
Barbara Stymiest, chair of BlackBerry’s board, said: "This financing provides an immediate cash injection on terms favorable to BlackBerry, enhancing our substantial cash position. Some of the most important customers in the world rely on BlackBerry and we are implementing the changes necessary to strengthen the company and ensure we remain a strong and innovative partner for their needs."
Chen, added: "BlackBerry is an iconic brand with enormous potential – but it’s going to take time, discipline and tough decisions to reclaim our success. I look forward to leading BlackBerry in its turnaround and business model transformation for the benefit of all of its constituencies, including its customers, shareholders and employees."

Decromancer - The Battle Card RPG for iOS/Android

The newest game from UNIT9 is Decromancer, a free-to-play tactical card battling RPG that is looking to shake up the mobile card game market by focusing on a compelling single player campaign.

Set in a fantasy world where an event in the distant past led to rapid evolution on a global scale, the campaign focuses around escorting a Necromancer diplomat across enemy territory while defending her from murderous enemy forces. Google Play has 25 percent more downloads than the App Store, but it's still behind in revenue by 50 percent. That's according to App Annie's third quarter 2013 report and the big difference seems to be in new markets like South America. Brazil and Argentina were big drivers of download traffic for Google during the quarter.
"The increase in Google Play's downloads was primarily driven by Brazil and Argentina with the former climbing one spot in the rankings to #4 behind the US, South Korea and India. Games remained the leading category in Brazil, but gains made by the Communication and Media & Audio categories also helped them achieve their Google Play download ranking," said App Annie in its report.
Though the App Store was ahead in revenue, its growth was in the Social Networking and Navigation categories, while Google Play's growth was in Games. The App Store's lead also shrunk from 2.3 times in Q2 2013 to 2.1 times in Q3 2013.
The App Store heavily benefited from users in China, which was number two in downloads for the quarter and number three in revenue. The US and China account for 40 percent of all App Store downloads, while the US, Japan, and China account for half of the revenue.

In contrast, the Google Play Store had the US, South Korea, and India in the lead for downloads, with Japan, South Korea, and the US taking the top three spots in revenue. Taiwan grew from quarter to quarter, rising to the fifth spot in revenue; 80 percent of that revenue was gaming-related.
