HMV's chairman Paul McGowan says it's "disappointing" that Apple has removed a new HMV digital music app from the App Store.
Apple initially gave the app approval, but the iOS version which launched on October 17th has now been temporarily removed. It allowed users to buy music and download songs straight into their iTunes library.
The app had been downloaded 10,000 times on iOS and Android since its release.
McGowan said: "It is disappointing that Apple has chosen to suspend an app that has proven to be very successful in only a few short days, despite Apple having already approved the exact same version on September 15th.
"We are unable to explain the change in Apple's position as we have been given no explanation by them as to any difference they view between the approved version and the one suspended this evening."
The Android and HTML versions of the app are "proving a big hit with UK consumers", McGowan added.
A new HMV.com website will also launch on October 24th.

Apple’s iPad business is ‘going down the tubes’, according to Business Insider.
Ahead of today’s expected iPad 5 announcement, the website has posted an article stating that iPad sales have dropped 14 per cent year-on-year in the June quarter, and now sit at around 15 million units.
“Even after adjusting for channel inventory, iPad sales to consumers dropped 3% year over year,” continues the article.
The struggle of iPad sales this year was compared to June 2012’s sales, where the Retina-equipped iPad 4 boosted Apple’s iPad sales from 12 million to 17 million in that quarter.
Apple’s decreasing sales and loss of market share is said to be due to “premium pricing”.
“In short,” explains the website, “Apple's iPads are too expensive.”
“By trying to maintain its premium pricing and high profit margin, Apple is likely losing sales that would otherwise help the company capture more of the mobile platform market.”
“This ‘premium pricing’ strategy is a departure from the strategy Apple has used for the iPhone and early iPads. (Those products were priced at or below the rest of the market). This is also a strategy that helped bury Apple in the earlier PC era — when it was charging premium prices for the Mac.”
Business Insider suggests that “the right answer” for Apple is to reinvest its profits into reducing the price of its iPhones and iPads.
“Apple is so phenomenally profitable that it could reduce its iPad and iPhone prices significantly and still coin money,” the website explains. “And, in doing so, it could also accelerate its unit growth and increase its global market share.”
"Doing this, of course, would further reduce Apple's current profit and trigger additional declines in the stock price. But that doesn't mean it's the wrong decision for the long term.”
“The company will not likely be able to continue to own the dominant global mobile operating system while also trying to maintain its premium device pricing and profit margin. Gradually, as hardware competitors get better and operating systems like Android become more ubiquitous, iOS will become more of a niche player. Ultimately, if it becomes too much of a niche player, it will lose its value to developers and distributors. And if that happens, Apple is finished. If there's no clear reason for consumers and developers to pay up to be in ‘the iOS ecosystem’, there will be no reason for consumers to pay up to buy Apple gadgets. The vicious cycle will feed on itself, and, ultimately, both Apple's profits and market share will collapse.”
It remains to be seen how consumers, investors and analysts react following Apple’s event later today, but “regardless,” Business Insider says, “the new iPad product launch is important…”

Nokia has introduced its first-ever Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520.
The rumours turned out to be true, a Nokia tablet has arrived, and it turns out @Evleaks was right with its tweet last month that claimed the new device would be called the Lumia 2520.
Spec leaks also turned out the be bang on the money, with the tablet confirmed as having a 10.1 full 1080p HD screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and a ‘power keyboard’.
Other specs include 4G LTE, Windows RT 8.1, 2MP HD wide-angle camera and red, white, cyan and black colour variants.
The Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet is expected to start shipping in Q4 2013 with an estimated price of $499 (£309).
This wasn’t all that Nokia announced today. Although we didn’t see the six smartphones that were reportedly to be unveiled, it wasn’t far off. Along with the Lumia 2520 tablet, the firm unveiled details about two ‘phablets’ and three additions to its budget Asha range.
The Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 are Nokia’s first-ever large screen smartphones. The 1520 has a 6-inch 1080p full HD display, while the 1320 has a 6-inch 720p display.
The Lumia 1520 is expected to start shipping in Q4 2013 with an estimated price of $749, while the 1320 won’t ship until Q1 2014 and will cost around $339.
The Asha 500, 502 and 503 join Nokia’s budget mobile range. The 500 features a 2.8-inch screen and 2MP camera. The 502 has a 3-inch screen and 5MP camera with LED flash. The 503 features 3.5G connectivity, 3-inch screen, 5MP camera with LED flash and Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
All three mobiles come in single SIM and Easy Swap Dual SIM variants and are planned to start shipping in Q4 2013.

BlackBerry claims five million users have already downloaded its BBM app since its launched earlier today.
BBM was one of the first messaging services on smartphones, with the app coming preloaded onto BlackBerry devices. Now iOS and Android users will be able to share photos and voice notes and engage in BBM Group chats through the BBM app.
They will also be able to add contacts through PIN, email, SMS or QR code scans.
While the app is free, there’s a queue. The firm said recently that six million people had signed up to get updates about the new app ahead of its launch.
In a tweet today from the official BBM Twitter account, the firm encouraged the ‘next 5 million in line’ to start using the app.

In an attempt to use Twitter to direct attention to Samsung’s latest Note 3 tablet, T-Mobile CEO John Legere has followed in the footsteps of Oprah Winfrey and Alicia Keys.
Legere tweeted “Glad @SamsungMobile decided to bring phablets to the states. I don't know what I'd do without my #Note3!” The tweet linked to a story explaining how Samsung ‘conquered the phablet market’.
The only problem was that he tweeted this message from an iPhone. Not a great advertisement for a device that he would be lost without…
In an attempt to make the tweet seem like less of a big deal, Legere followed it up with: "oops. I carry both as you may know! That was funny."
This second tweet was then followed by a picture showing an iPhone 5S alongside a Note 3 and a Galaxy Gear watch. It’s ok Legere, we get it.
At least Legere didn’t embarrass himself Alicia Keys-style by claiming that a tweet promoting a device that was sent form a rival brand was the result of hackers.
Last year, Oprah used an iPad to send out a series of tweets endorsing Microsoft’s Surface tablet. Who will be next?

EA is currently working on a "high-end and high performance" Battlefield game for mobile devices.
So revealed Electronic Arts president of labels Frank Gibeau in an interview with The New York Times.
We are working on a mobile game of Battlefield that will be high-end and high-performance,' teased Gibeau, who was recently put in charge of EA mobile.
"It's our bet that we can successfully pull that off," he went on.
The exec held off revealing any further details, but did state his confidence in mobile platforms being able to provide big production experiences like Battlefield.
"We're embarking on something no one has ever done before - to get these games to inter-operate between platforms. Will it work? It already has in some cases. Will it work for all franchises? Not all franchises will make the transition. Battlefield might be a little harder," he said.
"Does someone pick up a mobile phone and say, 'I'm just not interested in a war fantasy?' They are interested. So how do we create a war fantasy where it's a multiplayer destructible environment and it feels great? It's totally possible."
Next-gen and PC versions of the new Battlefield 4 will implement second-screen play via tablet devices with its Commander mode, which lets a remote player influence the battle from a strategic overview map, issuing orders, co-ordinating assaults on capture points, calling in gun ships for defensive actions and launching UAVs and Tomahawk cruise missiles to clear a path for their men on the ground.
EA has confirmed a Battlefield 4 release date of October 29 in the US and November 1 in the UK on current gen consoles and PC. Xbox One and PS4 versions will be console launch titles later in November.

Apple and the Sprint-owned Boost Mobile aren't the best of buddies, but that's all set to change on November 8th. The carrier has announced that it'll be offering the iPhone 5cand 5s starting the second week of next month, confirming the leaks we saw back in September. You'll be able to snag the devices on Boost's shrinking payments plans, which gives you unlimited talk and text with 2.5GB data for $55 a month.

BlackBerry is at last ready to resume its paused BBM rollout for Android and iOS. The instant messaging client should reach the App Store, Google Play and certain Samsung Apps portals within the next few hours. Not everyone can start chatting right away, however. To prevent a repeat of last month's server troubles, the company is implementing a queue system: those who signed up in advance can use BBM right away, while latecomers will have to secure a spot in line. It's not quite the broad launch many were hoping for, but it is good news for a company that has lately been feeling down.

Chromecast owners got Hulu Plus app streaming on their Android devices and iPads at the start of the month. Today, it's the iPhone's turn: a newly updated Hulu Plus app lets those with smaller-screened iOS devices control TV shows playing through Google's media adapter. There aren't any new features beyond Chromecast support, but it's enough to excuse a trip to the App Store for an upgrade.

What do you do when your conventional strategies for attracting mobile app developers haven't always been successful? If you're Microsoft, you build web apps. The companytells ZDNet that it has been repackaging dozens of popular websites as Windows Phone apps in an attempt to get the site owners to write native software. While clever, the approach is definitely a gamble. Microsoft notes that it doesn't own any of the content in these web apps -- and it's not clear whether the site operators are aware of Redmond's activities here. We've reached out to the company for more details and will update this post as we learn more.

HMV’s now-controversial iOS app will likely be gone by the end of the day.
Hilco founder Paul McGowan has confirmed on Twitter that Apple has set the retailer a deadline of 6pm today (Monday October 21st) to remove the app’s ability to download music files and have them added the iTunes.
Not only is this a big ask from a technical perspective, but HMV seems reluctant to play ball regardless, with McGowan saying last week that the company had “politely declined”Apple’s request to pull the app.
It now seems likely that Apple itself will yank the app from the App Store at the end of the day.
The HMV app arrived earlier last week, offering the ability to offer music purchases directly and have tracks automatically added to iTunes.
It’s the first time a non-Apple app has allowed this. And the chances are it may never happen again.

“Apple’s disregard for customer preferences in relation to iOS7 is corporate thuggery.”
Mixed reviews of Apple’s new OS have been bouncing around, with some embracing it and either loving or hating it, and others avoiding the update like the plague.
One Californian man has taken it one step further and filed a lawsuit against Tim Cook himself, reports Sky News.
The update has sparked tech-world-wide debates, and one spoof ad saying that it made your phone waterproof even resulted in people drowning their phones.
Mark Menacher is demanding a way of removing the installation file of iOS7, which is taking up space on his family’s devices even though he has chosen to not upgrade, and constantly asks if the download should be installed every time the device is switched on.
He is also seeking $50 in compensation saying that the way Apple has dealt with the roll out of iOS7 is “corporate thuggery.”
Menacher said in his court papers: “Steve Jobs was reportedly rough on company employees in pursuit of happy customers, but Tim Cook apparently cultivates a culture of contempt for customer satisfaction in pursuit of corporate profits.”
He continued: “It is a policy that will eventually fail.”

68 per cent of top print publications don't have a mobile optimised site.
81 per cent of smartphone and 71 per cent of tablet owners still prefer to consume content on their desktop or laptop computers, but 72 per cent of those expect said content to be of a consist quality across all device, according to Vibrant Media.
The findings follow research released in April showing that 68 per cent of the UK’s top publications do not have mobile optimised sites.
Tom Pepper, MD UK of Vibrant Media, said: “Consumers now expect to consume content on their handheld device just as comfortably as they do on their desktop or laptop computers – but don’t feel that publishers’ sites will match their expectations.”
Vibrant’s new ad formats nestle comfortably on all platforms, and consists of four units, Vibrant Mosaic, Vibrant Lightbox, Virant Image and Vibrant Storyboard.
They are designed to respond to every digital device automatically altering how it delivers its content depending on platform.
Pepper continued: “Many publishers are still reliant on ad formats developed for desktop devices to serve consumers on handheld devices. These desktop-only formats often display as huge messages that obscure the editorial or so small there almost impossible to see.”

Analysts have ‘confirmed’ that Apple has increased production of the iPhone 5S by 75 per cent, while dropping 5C production by 25 per cent.
Posted by NPD analysts on the DisplaySearch blog, the article cites two factors for the iPhone 5C’s struggling sales: a misguided launch of the phone in China and mistaken consumer expectation about the price of the “cheap” phone.
“The company could have sold the 5C at a much lower price (as the market expected); however, Chinese carriers were aggressively gaining new subscribers through device subsidies during Golden Week (first week of October). If Chinese carriers allocated a higher subsidy to new iPhone 5C subscribers, they would have less to subsidize other brands’ devices,” the blog commented on the “disappointing performance” of the 5C in China.
“Second, the market’s expectation of what the iPhone 5C would be was very different from how Apple wants to position itself. It was not Apple’s intention to develop a product targeting the “low-cost” smartphone segment. However, rumors about iPhone 5C being “cheap” were circulating as early as Q3 2012. The fact that the iPhone 5C is nearly identical to the iPhone 5 – and is not cheap – disappointed some consumers,” it added.
While the 5S seems to be more popular than the 5C, it might struggle itself against older iPhones that have built up a ‘retro’ appeal – with one first-generation 2G model listed on eBay for nearly £4,000.

After launching two new iPhones in September, there’s more to come from Apple on October 22nd, when the firm is expected to unveil a new iPad line.
iPad 5
Spec rumours for the iPad 5 include NFC, a thinner and lighter design, an aluminium rear shell, and film-based panels.
There are also suggestions that the iPad 5 could come with a charging cover, which could be used to charge smaller Apple gadgets as well as the iPad itself.
iPad Mini 2
The biggest rumour is that the iPad Mini 2 will have Retina display. Elsewhere, a quad core processor and more RAM are suspected.
In keeping with the iPhone 5C’s array of colour variants, it is rumoured that the iPad Mini 2 may also come in the same choice of green, blue, yellow, pink or white.
Back in August, photos emerged from FanaticFone allegedly showing the silver casing of the iPad Mini 2, showing an embedded black Apple logo rather than the usual printed mirrored one that features on current iPad models.
Accessories for the iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2 have already appeared at a Chinese technology event last week, with cases for the iPad 5 appearing to be thinner, due to a reduced bezel around the edge of the tablet. As for the iPad Mini 2, they appeared to be the same, suggesting any improvements are to be internal.
As well as the iPad, Apple is also expected to show off the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks updates.
The event takes place at 10am PCT – 6pm in the UK.

via http://ax86.patrickaalto.com/ablog.html
For the past couple of weeks I have been porting my x86 emulation core to run on Windows Phone 8 platform. This has not been quite as trivial as I would have hoped. There have been many changes I have needed to do to get my ASM code (all 85.000 code lines of it!) to compile for Windows Phone 8. Here is a list of the major differences and the fixes I have needed to do: - Windows Phone 8 does not allow you to run ARM ASM code! For some peculiar reason it forces you to use only Thumb ASM code. Luckily the new Thumb2 (available on ARMv7 processors) ASM code is much improved compared to the original Thumb ASM format on the ARMv5 processor (as in a Nintendo DS, for example). It allows you to specify when an arithmetic operation should change the processor flags, and has pretty much all the same features as the ARM version. It has some limitations, though, like not allowing you to set the processor flags using a literal value instead of a register, etc.
- Microsoft uses the ARMASM ARM Macro Assembler, which of course has quite different syntax (compared to the GNU assembler I use elsewhere) for compiler directives and especially macros. This has been the most time-consuming problem, as I use a ton of assembler macros in my emulation core and have had to rewrite all of them. Luckily at least the Microsoft ARMASM macros have similar features to the GNU assembler, so I have not had to make other changes besides the syntax. The bad thing was that I had been lazy when calling the macros and had not used commas between the macro parameters (which is not required by the GNU assembler, but is required by ARMASM). So I had to change also all macro calls where the macros use more than one parameter.
- My code is based on a lot of jump tables, and this generates a new problem in Thumb code. In my ARM code I have all the jump tables inside the code section, immediately following the code that needs to use the jump table. However, there is a (withdrawn) ARM document that describes the problem of defining data inside a code section: The linker automatically adds 1 to all addresses in the code section (thus making the data address unaligned), as it assumes the address is a jump target (where the lowest bit set means this is a jump target in Thumb code). This withdrawn document describes that I could use a DATA directive to tell the assembler that my jump tables are actually data, but this does not work in the Microsoft ARMASM, at least. A newer ARM document states that the DATA directive is obsolete and is ignored, but there does not seem to be an alternate way to make the data-in-code addresses aligned. So, I have had to move all my jump tables to the data section, and load their addresses separately whenever I need to use the jump table, thus slowing down the code somewhat.
- Local label search order differs between GNU ASM ands ARMASM. Gnu assembler looks for local labels (like b 1) forward unless you use the b letter (like in b 1b), while ARMASM looks for the closest label backward unless you use the f letter (like b %f1). I had not noticed this difference untill running the unit tests, and the first opcode that had a forward jump (where I used bcs %1) crashed, as it jumped backwards to some completely different code.
