This week's AlmostTI-Android 2.3.4 release fixes button response speed, adds support for x86-based Android devices, and lets you disable tip bubbles reminding you of where to find the menu bar: some people find these annoying.

Tagging greatly simplifies photo searches, but it can be a cumbersome process -- just ask anyone who has typed in keywords for dozens of vacation shots. It may be more intuitive if Apple implements the voice tagging from a newly publishedpatent application, though. The technique would let mobile-device users describe images using natural-language voice commands, with social networks and other info filling in the gaps. Say "this is us at the beach" and the software would tag not only you and the location, but also anyone else who was scheduled to come along on the trip. It could even auto-tag photos once it recognizes people and scenes. There's no certainty that iOS will get any of the new voice features, but don't be surprised if you can eventually ask Siri to sort out your iPhone photo gallery.

So if games that review averagely continue to sell by the millions and plenty of critical hits continue to fall by the wayside, what does that tell us? That consumers are stupid? Or that critics are rather out of touch with their audiences? Or maybe that reasoned opinion counts for sod all compared to the sheer might of the marketing dollar?
Either way, Ouya’s open-source Android-based philosophy was heralded as a brave new dawn for video games ahead of the machine’s arrival in June. Outlets simply couldn’t wait for a humble £99.99 device to arrive and shatter the bloated walled-gardens of those evil corporate console bastards.
And at the very least Ouya certainly arrived.
No one would reasonably question the motives and commitment of Ouya boss Julie Uhrman and certainly some open-source competition for the big boys would be healthy for what has become quite an entrenched console ecosystem.
But the fact remains that consumers largely didn’t care in June and there’s little sign of them caring now. There are loads of reasons why that may or may not be, of course. The lack of notable software exclusives. The cheap barely usable gamepad. An arguably corrupt financial incentive scheme for devs. The fact that while Android’s games library is rather large the vast majority of those games are developed for touchscreens.
While Ouya itself seems increasingly destined to fade into obscurity and become little more than an interesting side note in a future Steven Poole essay, it could yet be that its arrival at retail (although perhaps less so its move from shelves to bargain buckets) may in some way be the first step toward a more civic-minded games industry of the people.
But if one lesson should be learned from Ouya’s turbulent first six months it’s this – critics who exist within the games industry bubble need to learn how to think more like their readers.

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission has hit Apple with a small fine and warned the company that it may face a more substantial penalty if it doesn't stop interfering with carriers' iPhone pricing and the prices of the plans carriers sell alongside the iPhone. 'Through the email correspondence between Apple and these three telecom companies we discovered the companies submit their pricing plans to Apple to be approved or confirmed before the products hit the market,' Taiwan's FTC said in a statement.

The availability of an iOS 7 jailbreak may have caught the Cydia team off-guard, but not for long. Jay Freeman and fellow developers have just updated their unofficial app platform to match Apple's minimalist look. It's more than just a cosmetic upgrade, too, as it includes iOS 7's swipe-based navigation and appears to run faster. Individual app writers will still have to update their code for everything to run smoothly, but jailbreak users who've just been waiting for an OS-native Cydia will want to check for the update today.

When we last saw Grippity, it wasn't much more than a pretty media center keyboard. Well, it just grew up -- its creators have revived the concept as a full-fledged, crowdfunded Android tablet. The new design still centers on a transparent, dual-sided touch surface, but there's now more to do than type. ThePS Vita-style back control lets users tap interface elements without obscuring the screen, and it opens the door to more complex multi-touch gestures. The infrared remote control and thumbpads have also returned from Grippity's previous incarnation. If you're intrigued, you can pledge $235 ($159 for a few early birds) to Grippity's Kickstarter campaign to reserve a tablet for yourself; provided the team reaches its funding goal, you should have the device in your hands by October.

A couple months ago, Rockstar, a patent-holding consortium backed by Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Blackberry, and others launched a barrage of infringement suits against Google and the makers of Android devices. Google has now launched a counteroffensive, seeking protection from Rockstar's patent trolling. The complaint (PDF) says, "Rockstar produces no products and practices no patents. Instead, Rockstar employs a staff of engineers in Ontario, Canada, who examine other companies’ successful products to find anything that Rockstar might use to demand and extract licenses to its patents under threat of litigation." Google's filing also accuses Rockstar of interfering with their business practices by contacting other companies and trying to convince them not to use Android. It asks for a declarative judgment of non-infringement.

2013 continues to be a downer year for the company formerly known as Research In Motion. The Wall Street Journal has just uncovered a tidbit in BlackBerry's latest earnings report that states two unreleased phones had to be cancelled due to poor sales of its existing handsets. Apparently code-named Cafe and Kopi, they were slated to be sold as budget phones for emerging markets but had to be nixed to "mitigate the identified inventory risk." This comes on the heels of BlackBerry's announcement that it's partnering up with FoxConn for device manufacturing and canceling its annual conference in order to save costs. It all seems rather dire, but the Wall Street Journal also reports that the company is still working on a couple of higher-end handsets internally code-named Ontario and Windermere. Whether or not those phones will see the light of day, however, remains to be seen.

HP has long vowed that it would revive its smartphone efforts, and it may be near that comeback -- just not with the fanfare that some were hoping for. The Information claims that the company is weeks away from releasing a slew of phone-capable 6- and 7-inch Android tablets that would target developing markets, like China and India. They wouldn't cost more than $250 off-contract, and they would reportedly be recycled designs from manufacturers like Pegatronand Quanta. While HP isn't commenting on the rumor, it's safe to say that major smartphone makers wouldn't be losing sleep over the potential launch. The tipsters suggest that HP would instead be testing the waters -- it would enter fast-growing mobile markets while it works on original hardware, corporate apps and carrier deals that would be necessary in more established areas.

Rumors surfaced just days ago of Nokia-built Windows Phone 8.1 devices for the developing world, and you may already be looking at one of them today... or rather, its home screen. Frequent tipster @evleaks has posted what's reportedly a screenshot from the Moneypenny, the all-touch device from those earlier rumors. In addition to showing on-screen navigation keys, the image supports claims that the Moneypenny is the first dual-SIM Windows Phone -- an important gesture toward markets like China and India, where multi-line support is a big selling point. There aren't many other clues in picture, although the "6:30" in the corner may allude to a Lumia 630 name. Whatever Nokia might call the handset, we wouldn't expect it anytime soon; assuming the Moneypenny exists in the first place, we likely won't hear anything official about it until Microsoft reveals Windows Phone 8.1.

Sony's second-generation SmartWatch may not have impressed the critics, but those lukewarm feelings haven't deterred the company from making another wearable. The FCC has revealed that Sony is testing a "BT Wrist Notifier" with the model number SWR10, which sounds like a step beyond the SW2 code used for the current model. Beyond that, however, the documents just show that the device packs NFC and Bluetooth -- but if it's passed through the commission, it can't be too far away from a real announcement. You never know, maybe we'll see it at that big trade show in less than a fortnight.

The Ouya sold well on a promise, smashing its Kickstarter goal by more than $7 million. But its reception by backers, early adopters and press has been mixed.
Only a cynic could look at something like Ouya and not be impressed by its pluck. There it was, lacing up its tiny gloves and boots and throwing itself into the ring just as Sony and Microsoft’s heavyweight prizefighters were about to start knocking bells out of each other. The Ouya was the little console that could; Kickstarter’s 8.6 million dollar gaming baby.At least, that was the Ouya’s promise. The reality of 2013′s first ‘alternative’ console was confused. The Ouya sold well as a concept, bringing new and existing indie titles to the living room with a try-before-you-buy system that sounded like a boon for consumers. No handing over cash to an unscrupulous publisher only to find you’ve bought a half-broken howler of a game; the Ouya was cheap, cheerful and on the side of the consumer rather than big business – a console for the masses. Unfortunately, the masses just didn’t seem that impressed with the Ouya or its developer’s promise of a budget game “revolution”.With such a small install base, games on the Ouya sold poorly. Small studios with Android games ready to launch or already available on mobiles and tablets could port a version over very easily and perhaps net a tidy four-figure bonus for themselves, but developing exclusively for the Ouya (which is what the company wanted with its Free The Games programme, wherein it would match any Kickstarter donations for a game above $50,000 in return for a whopping six months of exclusivity) just didn’t make sense.Nor did it get better from a consumer perspective. No matter how good the marketing bumf around the Ouya, what you were buying was an underpowered console running games on an outdated Tegra 3 chip. Early reviews reported sluggishness just in navigating its menu screens and lack of responsiveness in some games that made them frustrating to control. Had the Ouya launched two or three years ago that would have mattered less, but it launched in a year dominated by the impending arrival of PS4 and Xbox One. With both of those consoles plastered over every flat surface reachable with a step ladder, and Sony and Microsoft compensating for a lack of killer launch titles by talking up their power and graphics, Ouya looked more and more like a toy. How were people supposed to get excited about playing a port of Sonic The Hedgehog when Microsoft and Sony were showing endless loops of near-photorealistic sports cars sliding around tracks in Forza and Driveclub?

Dark Souls series publisher Namco Bandai is interested in a mobile adaption of the punishing action RPG, but From Software's leads aren't sure altering the game's controls would be such a good idea. In Digital Spy's interview with Namco Bandai's Alex Adjaj, director of global strategy for mobile, Adjaj explains the difference in vision between the publisher and developer.
"We'd like to bring Dark Souls to mobile, but it's very difficult because the guys at From Software are very much console oriented," Adjaj said. "To change their mind about it, it takes quite a while."
Adjaj also said he thought that in regards to a mobile version, "there is a need to redesign the way you reroll in the game to make it a bit more casual, so with shorter sessions."
While Adjaj mentions the existence of peripherals for mobile devices to add buttons and thumbpads, he concedes that device manufacturers want the primary control method to be touch-oriented. We can just see it now - Dark Souls players on trains and in cafes, silently seething as they lose thousands of souls, definitely never swearing or throwing their phones.

Square Enix recently launched a Tomb Raider-based card game on iOS. Dubbed Lara Croft: Reflections, the free-to-play game has players dueling one another in real-time card battles, combining weapon cards to upgrade and evolve them and protecting their artifacts from thieving opponents.
Reflections also includes group battles in which players work to defeat special event bosses.
Lara Croft: Reflections is currently only available in New Zealand and Australia. The game is compatible with iPhone 4 and iPad 2 devices or better and requires a network connection to play. It launched just a few days after the original Tomb Raider's iOS port.

Android fans need go without oddball adventure game The Cave no longer, as the game found its way to that platform late last week. The Cave costs $4.99 on the Google Play store, and arrived a few weeks after making an appearance onOuya.
The adventure game comes from The Secret of Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert and Double Fine, the developer Gilbert left in March. The Cave first launched in January on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux and Wii U. Our review of the XBLA version considered it the "cruelest of Double Fine's games," noting its sharp writing and somewhat tiresome repetition.

In the past, luxury handset manufacturer Gresso has been known for dressing up iPhones with diamonds (and charging $30,000 for the deed) and producing featurephones, but now it's getting into the Android business with its limited edition Radical smartphone series. The bottom-line model, the Radical R1, goes for $1,800 and is made of grade 5 solid titanium, while you can also grab a $2,300 version, which features a logo plate adorned with your choice of white or yellow 18K gold (everything else is exactly the same, however). Not too shabby, but the downside is that they don't necessarily come with the flagship specs you might come to expect from phones that cost a third of the price: The 219g (7.73-ounce) Radicals come with Android 4.1.2, a 4.5-inch qHD screen, dual SIM support, an 8MP rear camera, 36GB internal storage and a quad-core 1.2GHz processor. Don't wait long to decide, however -- only 999 units are available.
