Marat Fayzullin has updated his Spectrum emulator Speccy for Windows and Android.
Quote:
New morning, new version of Speccy, my Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator. The new Speccy-Android 2.2.1 is now available from Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...com.fms.speccy (free version)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....speccy.deluxe (full version)
This release adds two special video effects: the "vertical scanlines" and the "raster". Both will make your screen look like an old, low-resolution LCD. I have also been working with the crash reports accumulated over the last few months and fixed three most common remaining crash causes. See below for details.
- Added "Simulate LCD Scanlines" option, for vertical scanlines.
- Added raster effect when both vertical and horizontal scanlines enabled.
- Fixed a crash when surface gets destroyed during display update.
- Fixed a crash when deleting files with special characters in their names.
- Fixed a crash when showing sections in File Selector.

- Made "Scanline Effect" a list selector, to accommodate multiple effects.
- Added "Vertical Scanlines" option, for vertical scanlines found in old LCDs.
- Added "Raster Effect" option, for LCD-like raster simulation.
- Fixed a crash when surface gets destroyed during display update.
- Fixed a crash when deleting files with special characters in their names.

Google has released its first Android device share data for 2014, and it's now clear that many users are flocking to a newer OS version... just not the latest version. While the shiny new KitKat release did climb to 1.4 percent of active devices in January, Jelly Bean was the real winner -- the older software jumped from 54.5 percent in December to 59.1 percent this month. There's no real mystery as to what happened, though. KitKat remains limited to mostly Google hardware, whether it's the Nexus line or Motorola phones; we haven't quite reached that point where large numbers of third-party devices either get KitKat upgrades or ship with the revision pre-installed. That surge may come soon, however, and the team in Mountain View can at least take comfort in knowing that over 60 percent of Android's active customer base is reasonably up to speed.

The jury's still out on Android gaming (exhibit A: OUYA), but that's not stoppingHuawei from taking a dive into that niche corner of the industry. Its Tegra 4-basedTron mini-console, announced here at CES 2014, pairs a cylindrical-shaped hub with a Bluetooth controller that hews quite closely to the Xbox 360 mold OUYA also went after. Before we get your hopes up though, take note that Tron's for China only -- at least, for now anyway. A Huawei rep did say that the company's looking into further market expansion, but given its track record with smartphones in the US, we have a hard time believing Tron will see these shores anytime soon.
The Tron console itself runs a half-skinned version of Android JellyBean (version 4.2.3) that presents a clean menu overlay with feature tiles for access to games, Huawei's store, video, application, settings and featured titles. That slick menu selection comes to a screeching halt, however, as soon as you attempt to select anything other than games, bringing you face-to-face with Android's ugly underbelly -- much like on the OUYA.

Remember that talk of a lower-cost Galaxy Note 3? You may be looking at the phone right now. SamMobile claims to have photos of the rumored Galaxy Note 3 Neo (aka Lite), and they show what you'd expect -- a slightly smaller, less advanced version of Samsung's pen-toting flagship. The leak also includes benchmarks that back up rumors of an 8-megapixel camera, a 720p screen and a hexa-core processor with performance between that of the Galaxy S 4 and the full-size Note 3. There's no guarantee that the photos or the specs reflect a shipping product, but there are murmurs of a possible Neo launch at Mobile World Congress in late February; we may not have to wait long to learn more.

Game of Thrones: Ascent, which was chosen as one of the best Facebook games of 2013, is headed for iOS and Android next. Developer Disruptor Beam's CEO, Jon Radoff, told Gamezebo that the move will conclude "in the near future."
Those who started the game on Facebook will be able to link their accounts for cross-platform play, or start on mobile from scratch. Game of Thrones: Ascentcasts players as nobles in the popular world penned by George R.R. Martin.
A new Game of Thrones title was also announced by Walking Dead developer Telltale Games last month. That series is planned to begin sometimes this year, hopefully before winter. Because, y'know.

Glu Mobile has released a RoboCop game on iOS that ties in to next month’s movie return for the Detroit law enforcer.
An android version is due for release on January 15th.
The game is free-to-play and takes the form of a cover shooter in which the resurrected Alex Murphy is undergoing a training simulation.
The RoboCop series debuted in 1987 with a film of the same name and went on to produce two, less successful movie sequels in 1990 and 1993 as well as a less-violent 1994 TV series.
The new film, which is due out in the UK on Februay 7th, looks to resurrect the brand, giving RoboCop a new look in the process.

The animation teaches the importance of building a strong foundation via active participation.
DreamWorks - who has just released the DreamTab ANdroid tablet for kids - and Plumzi has released an interactive appisode titled VeggieTales Appisode: 3 Builders for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The exclusive animation is based on the TV episode The Little House that Stood – it showcases a new form of story-driven entertainment that challenges children by putting them in control.
Viewers can use voice, tap, tilt plus more actions to participate in the episode and learn valuable life lessons from the VeggieTales characters Bob, Larry, and Mr. Lunt.
They can talk to Bob through the microphone and listen to his funny responses, tap the screen to make prints in wet cement, and drag materials to rebuild the dam to prevent CabbageVille from flooding.
Chris Hewish, head of global interactive at DreamWorks Animation, said: “We believe appisodes are an exciting new form of entertainment and we are proud to bring our first VeggieTales appisode to market with Plumzi.
“Plumzi has built a unique process and technology to quickly adapt existing animated series into immersive appisodes, which will allow kids everywhere to participate in the story of our beloved series.”
All the while entertaining the kids watching, it also reinforces child development and learning, plus allows parents to track the child’s progress in each of the activities.
VeggieTales Appisode: 3 Builders is available for $4.99 from the App Store now.

An 'unexpected problem' forced removal.
Just yesterday, Sega released Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper for iOS, which combines music, puzzles and adventure with characters Raphael and his dog Fondue.
It has since been removed from the App Store, however, due to a unexpected batch of bugs surfacing.
Sega's official statement says: "An unexpected problem has been discovered in the version of Rhythm Thief that was available yesterday on the Apple App Store, so we have removed it temporarily from the store as we work on a fix.
"Our development team is hard at work to update the game and it will be back online very soon. Anyone who has purchased the game already will be able to play it as soon as it is back. We will keep you updated and we thank you in advance for your continued patience."
During yesterday's launch of the ÂŁ6.99 game, Sega's digital business VP, Chris Olson, said: "Rhythm Thief & The Paris Caper fits well with our ongoing mission to bring diverse, high quality titles to the mobile games space."

UPDATE: Rhythm Thief's iOS launch has turned out to be short-lived - publisher Sega has pulled the game from the App Store after discovering an "unexpected problem"."An unexpected problem has been discovered in the version of Rhythm Thief that was available yesterday on the Apple App Store, so we have removed it temporarily from the store as we work on a fix," a spokesperson explained. "Our development team is hard at work to update the game and it will be back online very soon."Anyone who has purchased the game already will be able to play it as soon as it is back. We will keep you updated and we thank you in advance for your continued patience."Rhythm Thief launched on iOS last night - there's no word as yet on when it will return.ORIGINAL STORY: Rhythm Thief & the Paris Caper - the iOS spin-off of the 3DS rhythm game Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure - is out now, Sega has announced.Temporarily priced at ÂŁ6.99 / $9.99, this iOS adaptation isn't a straight port of the 3DS game as much of the storytelling has been omitted in favour of getting straight to the action. It's not entirely stripped down though, as the iOS game features a lot of new content including 20 original songs, 50 new missions, new mini-games, and an a new "accomplice" feature in which you can recruit teammates and even borrow them from friends. This Pokemon-esque trading feature comes at a cost, however, as the App Store noted that "a network connection is required to play." This may not be a big deal if you're on the surface, but you won't be able to play this during underground tube passages or on plane rides. We've contacted Sega about the possibility of an offline mode being added as an update and are awaiting reply.

Samsung has admitted that the public didn't see much difference between theGalaxy S III and S4 smartphones and said the S5 would likely pack a substantially different design. Exec Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg that the new flagship will go "back to basics," adding that "mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover." It'll also arrive with a brand-new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which itself will have "more advanced functions" and an improvement to what she called "the bulky design." Other revelations include a possible eye-scanner in the handset for greater security, though that's still being studied.
Farther down the road, Samsung said that it's looking at significant changes for the Galaxy Note 3's successor in order to target it at professionals who are "willing to pay more for handsets." As such, it may pack a three-sided display, like the so-called Youm prototype we saw last year at CES 2013, allowing users to read messages from oblique angles. Finally, Lee revealed that the Galaxy S 5 would arrive in March or April after Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Considering we saw the Galaxy S III and S4 around the same period in previous years, however, that's not a big shocker.

Apple and Samsung’s CEOs have greed to attend a mediation session to discuss settling a legal battle over designs and technologies of their mobile devices.
Apple’s Tim Cook and Samsung’s Oh-Hyun Kwon will meet by or before February 19th.
The agreement was made in response to a court order to submit a proposal for settlement discussion before a new trial begins in March.
The legal battle began back in 2011 when Apple accused Samsung of copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung later claimed Apple used its technologies without permissions.
In the last two years, Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in San Jose, California federal court, with juries awarding Apple a totally of around $930 million.

New device to be unveiled by April.
Samsung has been struggling as of late, cutting $8 billion off its market value, and losing market dominance to Apple in China.
Meaning it is under even more pressure to release something special for its next mobile device. Maybe an eye scanner similar to the iPhone 5S’ fingerprint scanner could be just the ticket.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a lot to live up – which is why Lee Young Hee, executive VP of Samsung’s mobile business is responding to what people want.
She said: “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility.”
There were already rumours surround retina technology as the NY Times reported earlier last year that the S5 could possibly sport an eye scrolling feature, to prevent time-consuming swiping when reading messages and other media.
She didn’t spill too many beans to Bloomberg at CES, but did say that the company will focus more on the device’s display, and feel of the cover.
It was also revealed that the new device will be released along side a new Samsung smartwatch. WHY???

Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers, the most recent video game adaptation of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, has grown a bit larger with the release of a third deck pack.
Like the game's prior two deck packs, this addition is priced at $3 and adds two new decks to Magic 2014. "Warsmith" is described as a red and white deck bolstered by beneficial artifacts and spells designed to improve the effectiveness of your virtual cardboard troops. "Hunting Season," by contrast, is a green deck that relies on oversized creatures to trample your foes. If sheer size doesn't work, and your armies are still being cut to pieces, don't worry: This deck is designed to allow players to quickly summon new creatures at a moment's notice.
The third deck pack for Magic 2014 should be available now on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam and the Android and iOS app stores. If you can't find it on your platform of choice, wait a bit, then check again. According to the deck pack's developers, "launch timing may vary by platform and region."

Sega's iOS adaptation of Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure is out now, and it's priced at $10. Before you rush off thinking you've landed a steal (ho ho ho), you should note this isn't a straight-up port of the 3DS game by any means.
This morning we briefly checked out Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper - as it's dubbed - thanks to a code provided by Sega, and we've confirmed you need a network connection to play the game at all. This is stated clearly on the game's App Store page, and when we tried to play it on our iPhone 5 in Airplane Mode, we couldn't get past the title screen.
As far as we've established, the game needs a connection to save progress. This is maybe related to a new "accomplices" feature. As you progress along you collect characters as accomplices, although it's easier to think of them as stat boosts you equip. You can also borrow accomplices from other players, including friends that you've registered.
As for the gameplay, there's a ton of new stuff including new mini-games, new rhythm missions, and a choice of wardrobe to clad Phantom R in, etc. However, the 3DS game's main story is apparently stripped down to the rhythm game missions in this iOS version, with much smaller bits of exposition in between them - that may be a good or bad thing depending on your perspective, really.

Yasumi Matsuno's Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians features cross-platform online play, and that may affect which platforms it comes to. The tactics game from the Vagrant Story director is only confirmed for iOS and Android curently, but developer Playdek is definitely looking at other platforms, and their policies towards cross-platform play.
We asked Joel Goodman, CEO of tabletop studio Playdek, whether or not that could close off the game from certain platforms.
"It potentially could and it potentially couldn't," Goodman said. "We're not speaking [about] any secrets here, we know for some platforms that will be more feasible to do than on others. At that point, then, we'll have to look at it and say, well, what's the more important part here? Is it that we end up with a platform that has a pragmatic community, and we don't want to do that, or that it's well worth it because it's still a gaming community that we want to address and make sure that they get this product as well."
Asked if it was fair to say it sounded like he was talking about previous-gen and current-gen consoles, Goodman replied, "That would be fair." Well, then.

Boxing management sim Title Bout Championship Boxing 2013 is now available on iPad and Android via the Google Play store. Title Bout 2013 launched on PC, Mac and Linux in June 2013, one month after Out of the Park Developments sold the series to PISD, an independent company that provides OOTP with development libraries used for Out of the Park Baseball.
Title Bout 2013 has players simulating boxing matches, setting up tournaments, training sessions and more in a management simulation/text-adventure-style interface. Much like OOTP Baseball and Sports Interactive's Football Manager series, Title Bout 2013 features a huge database of real-life athletes, sporting over 8,000 fighter records. The management sim is said to be nearly the same on iOS and Android as it is on PC, though it's priced at a moderate $1.99 compared to the current $9.99 price for two PC licenses on the game's site.
Title Bout Championship Boxing has a lengthy history, as it began as a tabletop game created by brothers Jim and Tom Trunzo in the late 1970's, later seeing DOS-based text simulation TKO Boxing in 1990. Comp-U-Sport created Title Fight 2001, a brand later sold to OOTP Developments, which launched Title Bout Championship Boxing 2 and version 2.5 in 2005 and 2008, respectively.
