"Year-on-year decline." Those are words that no company looks forward to publishing in its earnings reports, but unfortunately we've seen them printed more often than not on Nokia's quarterly statements. Though there have been a few ups and downs, struggling profits and sales have been a general concern for a long time, and unfortunately this quarter's earnings report did little to soothe our worries; Nokia sold 600,000 fewer Lumias than the previous quarter. Now that Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division is nearly complete, much of our focus has turned to how the merger will affect the Lumia lineup of Windows Phones. An even bigger mystery at the moment, however, is what Microsoft will choose to do with the rest of Nokia's phones -- namely, the Mobile Phone division, which consists of the company's basic featurephones and the Asha lineup of advanced featurephones, none of which run Windows Phone.
Just after Microsoft announced its intent to acquire the phone maker, Nokia insisted that the division wasn't going anywhere; it has "substantial global reach ... and a strong customer base," but in emerging markets like India and China, it faces intense competition from fully functional smartphone platforms for a similar cost. Even worse, as we learned in yesterday's report, sales from this division were flat -- and as the competition gets heavier, it's going to get worse, not better. Is it worth it for Microsoft to try saving a lineup of handsets that don't feature Windows Phone OS? Or does it make more sense to push lower-end Lumia devices to cater to the next billion smartphone users?

Apple isn't colluding with the NSA to hand over user data and CEO Tim Cookwants you to know that. In fact, Cook feels so strongly about this issue of security that he's gone on record saying the government would need "to cart [Apple's employees] out in a box" to get access to its servers. That choice soundbite comes from a sitdown interview, airing tonight on ABC, during which Cook elaborates on what he sees as public misperception stemming from the recent NSA scandal. To counter that, Cook said he's been "pushing very, very hard" for more transparency into Apple's internal practices, a move he hopes would help to set the record straight with the general public.
Cook is also expected to touch upon other topics outside of the NSA breach, like the company's heavily-anticipated plunge into wearables, and the measures Apple takes to maintain secrecy surrounding its product roadmap. You can watch the teaser clip from the full interview with Cook just after break.

Samsung had a rough day yesterday. Its earnings report indicated the company experienced the first posted drop in profit in two years (a mere $7.8 billion, compared to $8.27 billion in the same quarter last year), thanks to a strong Korean won, a special one-off bonus payment to employees and heavy holiday marketing costs. Given its increased year-over-year profits and sales this may not seem so bad, but there is a growing concern that the company has a difficult year ahead, especially for smartphone sales.
The company expects slowing sales in the first quarter of 2014 for its smartphones and tablets, thanks to "seasonality." This means fewer people are buying mobile devices -- as a new Galaxy flagship approaches, many people put off their phone purchase until it comes out. But the company also indicated that the mobile battlefield is only going to get fiercer over the next year, as developed markets are reaching saturation. Now, the war is shifting to developing markets where more people are becoming smartphone and tablet owners for the first time.

A team of researchers at Virginia Tech University have developed a battery with energy density an order of magnitude higher than lithium-ion batteries, while being almost endlessly rechargeable and biodegradable as well – because it's made of sugar. The battery is an enzymatic biofuel fuel cell – a type of fuel cell that uses a catalyst to strip molecules from molecules of a fuel material. Instead of using platinum or nickel for catalysts, however, biofuel cells use the catalysts made from enzymes similar to those used to break down and digest food in the body. Sugar is a good fuel material because it is energy dense, easy to obtain and transport, and so simple to biodegrade that almost anything biological can eat it. Sugar-based fuel cells aren't new, but existing designs use only a small number of enzymes that don't oxidize the sugar completely, meaning the resulting battery can hold only small amounts of energy that it releases slowly. A new design that uses 13 enzymes that can circulate freely to get better access to sugar molecules, however, is able to store energy at a density of 596 amp-hours per kilogram – an order of magnitude higher than lithium-ion batteries, according to Y.H. Percival Zhang, who studies biological systems engineering at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. "Sugar is a perfect energy storage compound in nature," Zhang said in a statement announcing publication in Nature Communications of his paper describing the battery. "So it's only logical that we try to harness this natural power in an environmentally friendly way to produce a battery.""

30 years ago today, Apple debuted the Macintosh. Here are some reviews of the early Mac models, including theMacintosh ('will be compared to other machines not only in terms of its features but also in the light of the lavish claims and promises made by Apple co-founder Steven Jobs'), the Mac SE ('contains some radical changes, including room for a second internal drive and even a fan'), the Mac IIx ('a chorus of yawns'), and the Mac Portable ('you may develop a bad case of the wannas for this lovable [16-lb.] luggable'). Plus insights on the Macintosh II's prospects from Bill Gates: 'If you look at a product like Mac Word III on that full-page display, it's pretty awesome. ... But the corporate buyer is never going to be a strong point for Apple.'"iFixit got their hands on a Mac 128K and did a teardown, evaluating the old hardware for repairability. What will the Mac look like in another 30 years?

One Man Left Studios, formed in 2009, will make its first foray into Android development next month with the launch of Tilt to Live 2. The sequel to the original indie darling will be available on Google Play come February 24.
Tilt to Live 2, an action game where players must tilt their device in order to dodge a relentless series of encroaching evil dots, is already available on iOS for $2.99. The sequel includes a new scoring system based around tricks and two different modes of play: Classic mode and Code Red. Unfortunately, the latter doesn't involve delicious, tooth-rotting soda, but you can easily make your own if you're thirsty.

Namco Bandai has resurrected its 1995 Super Famicom RPG Tales of Phantasiaas a free-to-play IOS app supported by in-game microtransactions.
The iOS version of Tales of Phantasia retains the classic JRPG's storyline and unique side-scrolling battle system, but ramps up its difficulty to encourage players to purchase optional status boosts and items that revive characters after death. Touch Arcade reports that the game's microtransaction system requires a constant online connection.
Tales of Phantasia has seen numerous ports over the last two decades, including enhanced remakes for the PSOne and PSP. The majority of these ports were exclusive to Japan, however. Previously, the only existing English-language version of Tales of Phantasia was a Game Boy Advance port published by Nintendo in North America in 2006.
Phantasia is the first of several Tales of... series games debuting stateside in 2014. Tales of Symphonia Chronicles will launch in February, followed by the release of Tales of Xillia 2 later this year. The latest series entry, Tales of Zestiria, was recently announced for the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

We've seen plenty of leaked information about the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a purported entry-level version of Samsung's popular handset. But while the South Korean giant has yet to make the device official, that hasn't stopped the company from talking about it. Earlier today, Android Central reported it had received confirmation from Samsung that the Note 3 Neo wouldn't be coming to the United Kingdom. Furthermore, a Samsung representative has now told Engadget the unannounced smartphone won't be released in the US either, telling us it's only expected to arrive in "select countries/regions" and that each will announce their availability in due time.
As a refresher, the Galaxy Note 3 Neo is said to feature a 5.55-inch, 720p screen alongside 2GB of RAM, a 3,100mAh battery and an all-new Exynos hexa-core chip. Now we just have to wait for Samsung to formally launch the thing -- and fret not if you're in the US or UK, as we're sure there will be retailers on the internet willing to take your money in exchange for this Note 3 variant.

Maybe you've heard the rumor: Apple's considering larger screens for its next iPhones. Because, yeah, the mobile market's been trending that direction for a while now, so it'd make sense. That doesn't mean it's necessarily true, but with theWall Street Journal weighing in on it today, the notion is gaining a bit more credibility. This is all, of course, attributed to "people familiar with the situation" that peg Apple's next two phones as having target screen sizes larger than 4.5-inches and 5-inches, respectively. What makes this rumor even juicier is the possibility that Apple might abandon the polycarbonate casing of the iPhone 5c in favor of the tried-and-true metallic approach of its latest generation.
All of this could change, however, as the alleged strategy is still being bandied about internally at Apple, with only the smaller-sized iPhone model being considered for mass production. That means your dreams of a phablet-y iPhone will have to remain just that for now. September is still far, far away and we won't know for sure what Cupertino's cooking up until then. But you can bet there'll be more rumors, more leaks and more fakes from the internet's iFandom to keep us all guessing as to Apple's next (relatively) giant leap.

Fancy feeding your music production hobby with a slate rather than a collection of pricey gadgets? If so, Korg has added to its iPad-based offerings with the Gadget app. The software for Apple tablets bakes in 15 different sythesizers and drum machines (called Gadgets) that can be combined any way you'd like to construct those beats. Ranging from the Kiev digital synth to the Chicago tube bass machine, the app's instrument arsenal (which can be previewed here) covers quite the sonic spectrum with drum and synth sounds a plenty. Keeping the orientation vertical, the UI is divided into two sections that allow for dual control at all times. This is aimed at making both track and instrument adjustments quick and easy. If you're concerned about your lack of musical skill, there's a scale function helps you avoid hitting a wrong note whilst getting your feet wet.
Already splurged for the latest iPad? Korg says you'll be able to run more than 20 of the instruments at the same time, thanks to its beefed up chipset. Once those audio files have been tinkered with enough, options for sharing to Facebook, SoundCloud and Twitter or beaming them to Dropbox for safe keeping are all built in. There's also access to GadgetCloud for showing off projects with fellow users of the software -- complete with its own ranking system. The app is a bitpricey at $38.99, but if you commit before February 23rd, you can snag a $10 discount at that second source link below.

Like a zombie slowly shuffling toward tasty, tasty brains, the release date forYaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has limped from March 4, 2014 to March 18. For those who can't wait to witness zombie murder at the hands of a ninja cyborg, however, Team Ninja and Dark Horse Comics have released the first of a three-part comic series that provides insight into the world and story of the upcoming game.
Written by Tim Seeley (Army of Darkness vs. Hack/Slash) and Josh Emmons (Ex Sanguine), the debut issue has main character Yaiba explaining how his sword came to be known as "Heartless." Just a wild guess here, but we're going to wager it has something to do with it being used to kill a lot of people. Maybe we're wrong, though! You can find out by downloading the first issue for free from the Dark Horse digital store or via the iOS or Android apps. The comic will also be available in physical format when the game releases.

Nearly one week after its launch on iOS, NBA Rush has been downloaded over one million times. This is according to a tweet from Other Ocean developer Frank Cifaldi. While the game's developer is listed as Renren Games on iTunes, Other Ocean handled its creation.
NBA Rush is an endless runner game with action similar Temple Run (but with basketballs). Players control one of 90 real-life NBA players, each armed with individual abilities and power-ups, guiding them through obstacles and slam-dunking over aliens. The wacky, licensed arcade-style game is free to play.

If you like to text friends and family overseas, you know that it can be expensive -- US carriers frequently charge either per text or for blocks of messages that aren't always enough. Pricing won't be a problem if you sign up for Verizon's new World Messaging Unlimited plan, though. As the name implies, the $5 add-on lets you send as many messages as you like to most countries. It also drops the per-minute voice rates to a penny when calling Canada or Mexico, and 5 cents for the rest of the Americas. Verizon describes the unlimited plan as a promotional offer; while there isn't a clear expiry date, we'd suggest acting quickly if you want to chat with the rest of the planet.

A US judge has just awarded Apple two summary pre-trial judgments, significantly reducing Samsung's chances of prevailing in the second patent clash between the two tech giants. Judge Lucy Koh invalidated a Samsung multimedia-synchronization patent and determined that the Korean company breached an Apple autocorrect IP -- meaning Koh thought the infringement was so clear that there was no need for a jury to see it. As Foss Patents pointed out, Google could also be unhappy about the autocorrect decision, since it may affect the entire Android ecosystem. With each party bringing five claims to trial, Samsung's chances have effectively dropped by 20 percent since it only has four of its own claims left and Apple has already prevailed on one. That could also impact Samsung's leverage in upcoming negotiations between the company's CEOs, since it hasn't won a single non-FRAND (standards essential) patent dispute through any of the two proceedings. If those discussions don't pan out, then the Apple v. Samsung, part deux trial will begin March 31, 2014.

Increasingly, all indies can do is release the best mobile game they can and hope for the best.
Monday’s Big Indie Pitch event in London felt like a microcosm of the mobile games market right now. It was chaotic, overcrowded and hosted over 50 indies, all of whom lined up to present their game to judges in the hope of winning that most rare of prizes, greater visibility. Only a few would succeed, with the majority destined to be left undiscovered and uncompensated.Among some derivative fare there were several intriguing and well-executed ideas. Schrodinger’s Cat was turned into a caped superhero for a puzzle platformer, and an adventure game described by its creator as a “mildly xenophobic space satire” raised a smile. Some former Ubisoft developers pitched Sleep Attack, a tower defence game with a neat twist and a cute art style. Tap Happy Sabotage, a party game riff on Snap played with several friends on the same iPad, also caught the eye. But taken as a snapshot of the creativity on show in the mobile games market, it wasn’t fantastically inspiring.Maybe those devs complaining about discoverability in the market are the same people flooding app stores with low quality games, hoping one will somehow catch on. And for those not relying on hope and luck alone, there are plenty of companies offering indies a way of getting greater traction in these marketplaces, selling their games across networks or monetising them by stitching ads into their output.Speaking to developers and service providers at the event, there seemed to be a fundamental tension between those interested in art of making games and the science of making money from them. There’s a reason we’ve yet to see too many critically-acclaimed free-to-play games, Plants Vs Zombies 2 being one of those rare specimens. Though it is the prevailing model right now, the mechanics of free-to-play simply don’t lend themselves to fluid and satisfying play and cannot be effectively supported by a small indie alone.

34 per cent keep their phones for nostalgic reasons like looking at old text messages.
Brits are hoarding an estimated 124.8 million unused mobile phones worth around £10.73 billion, finds SellMyMobile.com.
The average British phone user has two idle phones lying around their home, and nearly 32 per cent have three or more.
With the average device sporting an £86 price tag, some of us could be starving our wallets of £172. Imagine how many iPhone cases that could buy.
In most cases this could be down to pure laziness, however 34 per cent have admitted to being a little nostalgic when it comes down to letting our old phones go.
They say they enjoy sifting through old text messages, reminiscing on the good old times at least once a year – 15 per cent admit to doing this more than every six months…
Men have proved to be more clingy as 13 per cent have said that they store their phones in a box, or cupboard – probably in the ‘man draw,’ you never know when you might need it after all – compared to just seven per cent of women.
Keir McConomy, founder of SellMyPhone.com, said: “The Mobile Mountain study really highlights how many Brits are still unaware of the money they can make by trading in their old mobile phone.
“It’s surprising that one in five admitted to being too lazy to recycle or sell their old phone – through recycling sites the process couldn’t be easier.”

100 million more than the estimated 20 million in 2013.
The phablet market is expected to become a growth area for established smartphone vendors, allowing them to create flagship models targeted at tech-savvy markets.
Sales are expected to surpass 120 million by 120 million, rising significantly form the estimated 20 million in 2013, according to Juniper Research.
The OS market for phablets will most likely be dominated by Android andWindows, as both ecosystems are expected to find success in or have already succeeded in developing regions, and cover a wider price spectrum.
However if rumours surrounding Apple’s entrance into the phablet race are true, it could change these predictions dramatically.
The devices will find that some of the most receptive markets will be in East Asian territories such as South Korea – amongst gamers who desire a larger surface to play on, and China where content streamers desire higher quality screens.
