Booming Clash of Clans developer Supercell plans to release a third game next month called Boom Beach. It's apparently already soft-launched in Canada and Australia, and is a top-five grossing iPhone game in both countries, reported Gamasutra.Supercell announced its intentions during an astonishing annual earnings report. Consider that Supercell began life in 2010 with the help of a loan from the Finnish government, and built Hay Day and Clash of Clans with teams of half-a-dozen each. Now look at the 2012 numbers: $101m revenue, $51m operating income (Financial Times). And then look at the 2013 numbers: $689m GAAP revenue, $322m EBITA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation), according to Gamasutra."You need to create a game that people play for years"
Illka Paananen
You could buy a house with an on-site horse for that kind of money!Apparently a hacker revealed earlier this week that Supercell was raking in more than $5m a day. How? Micro-transactions of course; time-saving, progress-boosting payouts surrounding every aspect of what Dan Whitehead called a "tissue thin" game, in Clash of Clans' case. How is it that Supercell is so successful? "It is both simple and incredibly hard," explained CEO and co-founder Illka Paananen, reported the Financial Times. "You need to create a fun game. You need to create a game that people play for years, not months, and those people have to play a lot." He did later say that "I don't think you should devote your life to playing games".On the topic of some players spending a fortune on the game, he added (via Gamasutra): "It's no secret that some players spend substantial amounts of money on these games. But I wouldn't say the vast majority of revenue comes from them. These people usually come from an investment banker or lawyer background, and they spend a lot of money on golf courses and so on. I've asked them, 'Why do you spend so much money on these games?' And they say, 'People spend money on golf, I spend money on Clash of Clans.'"Supercell announced itself with a bang last year by selling - for $1.5bn - just over half of the company to Japanese Puzzle & Dragons maker GungHo. That meant Supercell was valued at $3bn.GungHo, incidentally, raked in revenues of $1.6bn and operating profits of $900m in 2013.Someone's doing well, aren't they?

We already have a hard time finding fault with processing power in the mid-range smartphones and tablets currently on the market, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be even snappier. That's the goal of ARM, which has announced the latest Cortex processors, known as Cortex-A17, to address not only mobile devices in the midrange market, but Smart TVs and Over-the-Top devices as well. The 28nm A17 comes with big.LITTLE (the architecture used in Samsung's latest octa-core Exynos chips) support, and promises a 60 percent boost in performance overCortex-A9. It's also paired with a Mali-T720 GPU, which offers OpenGL ES 3.0 support and plenty of optimizations for low-end Android devices. While ARM doesn't specify an actual timeframe for release, it says that we should expect a huge push for the A17 in 2015; in a separate release, MediaTek also tells us that its newest octa-core processor comes with Cortex-A17 tech inside and will be available in the second half of this year.

We're not mathematicians, but we're fairly sure that you can't multiply Life to the power of five. That hasn't stopped Samsung, however, from claiming as much on its latest MWC invite. The company's "back-to-basics" Galaxy S5 is expected to dominate the show, and this is the first official hint of what we can expect. The grid of nine icons are grouped by color, with Speed, Curiosity and Privacy in team blue and Outdoor, Style and Fitness in healthy green -- and yes, all are multiplied to the power of five. It'd be hasty to leap to any conclusions just yet, but perhaps we'll see Samsung beefing up device security in the wake of PRISM and, hopefully, a renewed focus on fitness.

Tablet manufacturer Fuhu has told PCR that âno plans have been determined yetâ to bring the DreamWorks Animation kidsâ tablet to the UK.
The DreamTab is the first ever tablet from DreamWorks and comes with an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. It will be powered by the latest Intel Atom processor.
When asked how the DreamTab will differ from the likes of Samsungâs Galaxy Tab 3 or LeapPadâs kid-friendly offerings Grace Ryu, Fuhuâs public relations manager, explained:âThe DreamTab is not a toy tablet with adapted features or a tablet repurposed for kids.
âIt is the first tablet brought to kids by world- renowned companies that are the best in the industry â DreamWorks for best in family entertainment, Intel for fast and powerful processing power, and Fuhu for the best in kidsâ tech experiences for enriching learning, playing and growing experiences. âDreamTab brings the expertise of all these partners to redefine what a tablet for kids should be, with one-of-a-kind experiences.â
Ryu boasted that the tablet âhas what no other tablet for kids hasâ â access to professional tools and âworld-classâ talent.
âIn the Creativity Island [app], DreamWorks animators lead a video tutorial to teach kids how to draw characters from DreamWorksâ hit movies and shows,â she explained.
The tablet also comes with a Utilities app that teaches kids how to manage their time and events and a feature that educates them on how to use social networking platforms and behave on them in a safe and secure way.
The DreamTab will be available to US consumers this spring and will cost less than $300 (ÂŁ183).

The furore around Flappy Bird â a game which just last week was generating $50,000 in ad revenue a day â has taken yet another turn.
No, it isn't back on the App Store or Google Play following creator Dong Nguyen's decision to pull the plug, instead, the Vietnamese developer has been thrown into a twisted internet hoax suggesting he's committed suicide, reportsHollywood Life.
The story goes as follows:
"Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has just been found dead in his home with a gunshot wound in his dead. Authorities are confirming that Nguyen committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Authorities are saying that the sensational game Flappy Bird had something to do with the suicide.
"There has also been 7 reports of other suicides around the U.S. today alone. Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has taken Flappy Bird off app stores this morning and is believed to be the cause of the suicides."
Fans of the game have been seen on Twitter sharing and favouriting the story, while trolls have been throwing abuse and death threats at Nguyen, which is likely where the suicide story originates from.
Since announcing the game's extermination on Twitter, Nguyen has maintained a social media silence despite being inundated with mentions and seeing followers surge to 150,000.

Calling a game "addictive" is typically thought of as a compliment. Not so for Dong Nguyen, creator of recently-pulled mobile hit, Flappy Bird. Nguyen told Forbes in a recent interview that the game was too addictive, and that guilt motivated him to remove the game from the iTunes and Google Play stores.
"I think it has become a problem," Nguyen told Forbes. "To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird. It's gone forever." Those pining for the good ol' days of birds flapping freely in the pipe-laden lands of iOS and Android may be out of luck, but Nguyen told Forbes he plans to continue developing games.
He'll also leave his previously-developed titles like Super Ball Juggling andShuriken Block up for purchase, as he considers them "harmless."

Supercellâs Clash of Clans is certainly showing the established games powerhouses how itâs done.
Business Insider reports that AppData numbers suggest the free-to-play smartphone title is making an astonishing $654,000 a day for the Finnish games firm.
An App Annie report last month revealed that Clash of Clans is currently the worldâs third most successful freemium title after GungHoâs Puzzle & Dragons and Kingâs Candy Crush Saga.
At its height Puzzle & Dragons was reportedly making upwards of $2m per day netting earnings of $65m per month.

Appleâs CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company plans to release new products this year.
In an interview with WSJ, Cook said outright that âthere will be new categories this yearâ. Commenting that the firm is ânot ready to talk about it, but weâre working on some really great stuffâ.
The tech media have circulated rumours about an Apple iWatch for a while now, but with a number of other smartwatches already on the market, perhaps Apple is looking ahead to something newer.
Another rumour doing the rounds is that Apple will launch its own television, which could come with an integrated Apple TV streaming device.
Judging by Appleâs recent patent spree, the new products could include an iPen stylus, a double-sided touchscreen laptop and a wireless projector PC.

As reported yesterday, Google's Nexus 7 tablet will finally become available on Verizon Wireless with support for the carrier's LTE network. And it looks like rumors got the date right, too; the 7-inch Android slate will go on sale at Verizon this Thursday, February 13th, with the 32GB model priced at $350. The Nexus 7 will also be available on a two-year contract for $250, though only for a limited time.
If you already own a 2013-edition Nexus 7, you'll be able to access Verizon's LTE network once you've downloaded the latest Android software update. Adding the tablet to your Share Everything plan will cost an extra $10 per month. Google's 7-incher had to undergo a lengthy certification process before gaining support for Verizon's network, so today's announcement is good (if not overdue) news.

This weekend's removal of mobile hit Flappy Bird has already been capitalised on by app store developers looking to fill the game's void - and by people who downloaded the original when it was still available.Fluffy vs. Flappy Birds.
Flappy Bird's disappearance has only encouraged the rise of copycat games, with one clone now having risen to second placein the UK free app charts. But while Fly Birdie - Flappy Bird Flyer bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, the game will charge you ÂŁ0.69 for every three lives. The original Flappy Bird was entirely free.Another clone, Fluffy vs. Flappy Birds will charge you ÂŁ1.49 to remove ads, or up to ÂŁ6.99 for lumps of in-game coins.Other Flappy Bird alternatives currently available include Flappy Plane, Flappy Bee andFlying Flappy Unicorn Bird: The Frozen Sky Fall. And, if you're an Android user, you can download Happy Poo Flap.Happy Poo Flap.
Meanwhile, phones which have Flappy Bird installed are currently being placed on eBay for substantial amounts. In the UK, a 16B iPhone 3GS is being sold for ÂŁ1000, an iPhone 5S for ÂŁ650 and an HTC One for ÂŁ525. Many other options are available, all "with rare Flappy Bird game installed!".Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyendecided to remove his hugely popular appover the weekend after saying he did not want the fame it had brought him - despite it raking in $50,000 a day in ad revenue."I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore," he wrote on Twitter. "I can call Flappy Bird is a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it."

Buddy & Me, the sidescrolling mobile gameabout Falkor The Luck Dragontotally not Falkor The Luck Dragon, is now available on Google Play, according to a news post from developer Sunbreak. The adorable, adorable, adorable mobile game earned high praise from us back when it first released on iOS, and now Android users get to experience what it's like to have the mental walls of cynicism and apathy broken down by stars and singing bunnies.
For those not yet taken in by Buddy's big, lovable grin, here's how the magic happens: you're given two minutes to get as far as you can through a treehouse so large even the wealthiest billionaire's children would gawk at its immensity and wonder. Collecting bunnies adds time to the clock, so the longer you can keep up with the game, the longer the ride will last.
You might even say the story of Buddy & Me is neverending.

Lawmakers in California are so intent on curbing record levels of smartphone theft, they're ready to fine phone makers if anti-theft measures aren't installed on their devices. The New York Times reports that the order will come from State Senator Mark Leno, who is set to introduce a new bill requiring all smartphones and tablets sold in the state to include a "kill switch" solution that would lock down a device if it was stolen. Ignore the ruling and there's a $2,500 fine for each device sold.
San Francisco and New York prosecutors George GascĂłn and Eric Schneiderman set the ball rolling when they met with representatives from Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft last year. Apple has since won praise for including its Activation Lock feature by default in iOS 7, requiring device owners to set a passcode that stops thieves reactivating a stolen phone (but could be unlocked with a username and password). While it would only officially cover California, the new law could force phone makers into a full US rollout, likely upsetting the carriers. The CTIA, which represents the likes of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, believes its stolen-phone database is a better solution and will fight the ruling. If it is signed into law, phone makers will have until January 1st, 2015 to implement a solution or they will not pass Go and will be forced to pay out a lot more than $200.

The larger iPad's high-res screen is a plus for shooting video, but wielding it can make one look like, dare we say, a dork. One way to overcome that stigma is by shooting with the original Padcaster (pictured above), a metal frame that lets you mount your tablet on a tripod and attach lenses and other accessories. The company has now launched a version for the iPad mini on Kickstarter, which you may prefer for its less bulky size, but equally capable 1080p camera and (optional) Retina screen. Like the last model, the Padcaster Mini consists of a frame with threaded holes for video accessories, a bracket for 72mm and 58mm lens adaptersand a DSLR attachment if better video is needed. That'll let journalists and bloggers broadcast live straight from an iPad, or even use it as a makeshift teleprompter or support to watch TV in bed, for instance. It's now about halfway to its goal, so if you're looking to cast in style from your own mini, you can pledge at the source starting at $99.

It turns out we're not the only ones who are ready to see this patent battle royalecome to an end. Last night, Judge Lucy Koh denied Samsung a retrial in the case that will not die, but took the opportunity to shame Apple's lawyers for bringing the Korean company's foreignness into the equation. The court-appointed shaming comes as a result of closing arguments made during a partial retrial that saw a portion of Apple's original award bumped from $450 million down to $290 million in damages. At the time, Apple's attorney argued that Samsung's infringement of Apple's patents could have an impact on the US economy. When I was young, I used to watch television on televisions that were manufactured in the United States. Magnavox, Motorola, RCA. These were real companies. They were well known and they were famous. They were creators. They were inventors. They were like the Apple and Google today.
But they didn't protect their intellectual property. They couldn't protect their ideas. And you all know the result. There are no American television manufacturers today.
Samsung originally moved for a mistrial in that case based on those comments, but was denied. Instead, Koh informed the jury to avoid letting prejudice inform its decision. While Koh didn't see the need for yet another trial, she repeatedly referred to the comments as "troubling," saying they "could have been perceived as invoking racial or ethnic prejudice."

Wondering what Windows Phone 8.1's rumored notification hub would look like? You may be looking at it right now. Winphollowers claims to have a leaked Microsoft presentation outlining the feature, which might be called Action Center. While Windows Phone's approach to notifications would share much in common with what we've seen for a while in Android and iOS, it would have a few tricks up its sleeve. A driving mode shortcut would be available to (presumably) keep distractions to a minimum while on the road. Apps may also have more control over their notifications than you've seen on some other platforms. Alerts would silently appear, update or vanish, making it easy to deliver constantly changing information (think sports scores) or to clear out time-sensitive notices when they're no longer relevant. There's no guarantee that we'll see Action Center in 8.1, but the historically reliable WPCentral vouches for its existence -- we won't be surprised if it's part of the final OS release.

"We don't have a mobile gaming industry anymore. We have a mobile scamming industry."So said Thomas Baekdal in a column last week, swinging for the head of a nail with a strike so true that I found myself letting out an involuntary splutter of agreement. It wasn't so long ago that mobile gaming - and by extension tablet gaming - was the great white hope. Amidst the stagnation of traditional console and computer games, mobile was a hotbed of imagination and innovation where none of the usual rules applied. As the big old studios and publishers disintegrated, mobile allowed the smartest survivors to land on their feet and make the kind of games they and we really cared about.Nowadays it's a very different picture. There are a few people still doing good work on mobile (Simogo and the guy behind Blek are the first two that spring to mind), but the majority of smart indie developers have moved on to Steam or been signed up by Sony. They leave the mobile app stores to a new breed of business optimisers engaged in what increasingly feels like a pitiable race to the bottom. A few of these people are making a lot of money, but at what cost? The latest example of their output is Dungeon Keeper, which joins Electronic Arts' burgeoning shop of horrors. EA draws more attention than most when it tries this stuff because it uses cherished properties like Ultima to do so, and it should know better, but in many respects it's no worse than the likes of King and Zynga, who exist primarily to behave this way rather than just dabbling in it. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...eper-and-learn
