Attention hungry iOS Threes addicts and sad Android users: You, too, can playThrees all day long with the browser game, designed specifically for those who want to spend hours avoiding actual work (or those who forgot their spectacles at home). Seriously, only open this game if you're OK with not doing anything productive the rest of the day.
You already opened it? Oh, man. We warned you.
Threes comes from artist Greg Wohlwend and designer Asher Vollmer, and it's a brilliantly simple premise: On a four-by-four grid, slide numbers together to create larger numbers, all divisible by three. One and two make three, three and three make six, six and six make twelve, and up from there, squishing together the same, three-based numbers to achieve the high score.
The Threes browser game doesn't include the amiable chatter and unique personalities of each number featured in the iOS version, but it has the option to play the game's music. The big version comes from Angela Li,@angelaconstance on Twitter, and it's been approved by Wohlwend and Vollmer.
"We're really flattered that a fan would take the time to put Threes in the browser like this," Wohlwend tells Joystiq. "It's a fan-made, free game that doesn't try to profit from our hard work on Threes. We're currently trying our hardest to stay focused on the next update as well as on porting to Android. While the obvious feelings of 'uh-oh, people really want to play Threeseverywhere' kind of permeate our thoughts more and more, and it's hard to focus on what we need to because of that, we feel this homage was done with the right kind of heart."

The International Game Developers Association has issued a statement opposing King's recent Candy Crush Saga trademark filing, criticizing the developer's "predatory" attempt at owning and controlling the words "candy" and "saga" across all gaming platforms.
The organization plans to leverage its Business and Legal Special Interest Group to investigate the filing. King's "candy" trademark was recently approvedfor publishing by the US Patent and Trademark Office, giving developers and organizations 30 days to oppose the mark's final publication.
"While we understand and respect the appropriate exercise of Trademark rights," IGDA executive director Kate Edwards said. "King's overreaching filing in its application for the Trademark for its game 'Candy Crush Saga,' and its predatory efforts to apply that mark to each separate word contained in that name, are in opposition to the values of openness and cooperation we support industry wide, and directly contradict the statement King's CEO, Riccardo Zacconi, made on January 27th."
Edwards continued: "Our Business and Legal Special Interest Group will be providing a more comprehensive analysis of this issue from its perspective soon."
King targeted indie developer Stoic Studio last year, claiming that its title The Banner Saga was "confusingly and deceptively similar to [King's] previously used Saga marks." King relented in the following months, stating that it "has not and is not trying to stop Banner Saga from using its name."

The Apple rumor mill is alive and well. This time around the tech giant is rumored to be looking into exploring medical sensor technology related to predicting heart attacks, and might even buy Tesla. 'Taken together, Apple's potential forays into automobiles and medical devices, two industries worlds away from consumer electronics, underscore the company's deep desire to move away from iPhones and iPads and take big risks. "Apple must increasingly rely on new products to reignite growth beyond the vision" of late founder Steve Jobs, said Bill Kreher, an analyst with Edward Jones Investments in St. Louis. "They need the next big thing.

We ask a number of developers about the game's success and what they can learn from Nguyen's reaction
Just last week, Vietnamese games developer Dong Nguyen pulled his mobile sensation Flappy Bird from both Android and iOS stores. While Nguyen later said he was worried about how addictive his game had become, he clearly had had enough of the vitriol and abuse being thrown his way from gamers around the world. The fame was ruining his life and he was overwhelmed. Flappy Bird likely hadn't even reached the height of its popularity yet, and the game was already banking $50,000 a day on ad revenues. Even so, you can't put a price on sanity, asJeff Vogel points out.
In light of Nguyen's decision to remove Flappy Bird and seeing how he and other developers in the past have been crushed by a toxic internet environment, GamesIndustry International polled a number of mobile devs about the game's rise to fame and what they could learn from the whole situation. Here's how the panel responded...
GI: Considering how unremarkable a game Flappy Bird is, why do you think it became such a smash hit?
"I would argue that the experience of playing a game can be far better or worse than a list of features would suggest. Just because on paper the game is unremarkable doesn't mean that users don't find the experience remarkable. Simply put it's incredibly addictive in a way that can't be explained on paper but has to be experienced to understand." - Jeremy Rossmann, CEO, MakeGamesWithUs
"It's a great example of a viral breakout. Once it reached critical mass, everyone had to play it, because everyone else was playing it. It's also insanely difficult, which 1) differentiates from typical mainstream entertainment and 2) makes you more likely to share your achievements when you reach a good score." - Petri Järvilehto, co-founder and CCO, Seriously
"I think having people around you, that support what you do is important. They can talk you down from that emotional ledge"
Dustin Hendricks
"In our opinion, the features of the game that support this are 1) under 3MB download - the game downloads instantly even over crappy networks; 2) You are playing 3 seconds from clicking the icon - the game starts immediately and no matter how little time you have, you have enough to play a round or two; 3) Even a super successful session is only a few minutes long; 4) It seems that you should be able to play much better, which leads you to try again and again and again; 5) One number tells how epic you are - just say you got 200 in Flappy Bird and everyone knows that it's impressive. From the game discovery side, Twitter seem to have played a strong role in Flappy's viral rise with people suddenly competing to complain how the game had ruined their life. Even the App Store reviews seemed to spawn a competition in creating the longest, most verbal rant about how awful their life has become with Flappy Bird addiction. The rants always ended up giving the game a 5-star review." - Teemu Mäki-Patola, COO/CMO, Frogmind
"There's no formula for what makes games into hits. Imagine if we did: every game would be the same - how tragic! That being said: there was probably a better way to handle his 'too addictive' problem than pull the game entirely. This sort of 'parenting' seems a bit melodramatic. It's either the worst decision of his life, or the best marketing campaign ever. Think about it: when a parent takes candy away from a baby, what does the baby want even more?" - Stephen Varga, COO and co-founder, ByteSized Studios

According to the latest IDC figures provided to Engadget, Samsung continued to perform well in Greater China -- as in mainland China and Taiwan combined -- in terms of smartphone shipments. In mainland China last quarter, the Korean giant topped the chart with a 19 percent market share, followed by Lenovo at 13 percent and Coolpad at 11 percent. IDC's Senior Research Manager Melissa Chau pointed out that compared to a year ago, the top three vendors remained in the same positions, but ZTE has since slipped from fourth place to out of top five, thus letting Huawei and Apple move up one place. Chau added that Apple's shipment was also boosted by the full rollout of the iPhone 5s and 5c to its other channels in China since late Q3.
While Xiaomi is nowhere to be seen in mainland China's top five, it's managed to nab 3 percent of the Taiwanese market to secure fifth place last quarter. This is no doubt thanks to the recent launch of the Redmi, aka Hongmi, budget phone there, with help from local carrier Far EasTone. But Chau cautioned that it's still early days for Xiaomi, for it "just barely edged out LG" in Taiwan, plus it's a long way behind HTC in fourth place. What's more worrying is that Acer isn't even in the top six in its hometown, which is just one of the many signs showing how it desperately needed the restructuring.
With the full rollout of TD-LTE plus Lenovo bringing Motorola back into mainland China, it'll be interesting to see how the landscape changes again a year from now.

Apple and Google have finally begun to stem the tidal wave of Flappy Bird clones saturating app stores, developers report.App creators have taken to Twitter after finding out that their own versions of Flappy Bird have been rejected.
Apple has begun blocking Flappy Bird-style submissions under the grounds that they "leverage a popular app", while Google is labelling Flappy clones simply as "spam".The apparent policy change does not appear to have affected games already live on app stores - which include titles such as Flappy Fish, Flappy Wings, Flippy Flappy Bird, Floppy Bird and the current top-rated game Fly Birdie - Flappy Bird Flyer."This is just not my f***ing week," mobile developer Ken Carpenter ranted after his app Flappy Dragon was "rejected" (thanks,TechCrunch)."We found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app," he was told by Apple. "Which app?" he replied, "Flappy Bird doesn't exist!?!?!"The developer similarly fell foul upon submitting Flappy Dragon to Google Play."There was no 'Fair Warning' email, which Google claims to send before taking such actions," Carpenter continued. "I checked and rechecked my spam folder to be sure. They just arbitrarily removed the app with no warning."The message they sent me simply referenced the 'spam' provision of the Google Play terms and did not specifically call out what my transgression was."Another developer claimed that his own App Store attempt, the Lovecraftian-themed FlapThulhu: Flappy Madness, was also blocked. Several others have also met the same fate.Eurogamer investigated the sudden spike of Flappy Bird clones last week - and some of the developers who are looking to cash in quick on the phenomenon.Apple and Google's decision to block Flappy Bird clones marks a rare intervention from the companies, who have typically always turned a blind eye to games which don't explicitly break copyright. We've contacted both again this morning to find out what prompted the change.

The Deadly Six have been pestering Sonic since the release of Sonic: Lost World, but his old rivals haven't forgotten their hatred for the blue blur. Dr. Eggman serves as Sonic's latest opposition in Dr. Eggman Invasion, a new challenge for the mobile endless runner Sonic Dash. Thankfully, Eggman is ready to conveniently time attacks and place traps so that agile players can guide Sonic to victory.
In Sonic Dash's winding pathways, players eventually reach bumpers that propel them into the air. These serve as an opportunity to "bank" rings so that they can't be lost by running into an enemy or obstacle. Eggman appears during one of these aerial moments, and messing up his fancy flying chair will grant a nice boost to a player's score.
Sonic Dash is free to play, so as long as you're cool with advertisements and microtransaction popups, you can take on Eggman on iOS or Android devices.

Starting February 23rd, T-Mobile is allowing Jump customers to upgrade their smartphone or tablet whenever they want, rather than just twice a year. There's just one (gigantic) catch: your device has to be at least halfway paid off before you make the switch. Currently, Jump customers can get the phone of their choice for zero money down, and pay off the full price of the device over the course of two years. If you get a new phone every six months (as Jump currently allows), you would have only paid off a quarter of the device when you make the swap. While the new policy lets you upgrade more often, if you're making a change earlier than a year in you're going to have to pay a bit out of pocket.
The idea brings Jump more on par with Verizon's Edge program, which also requires you to have your device halfway paid off to upgrade, and AT&T's Next program that offers upgrades once a year. Requiring 12 months of payments on a device minimizes the loss on these plans for carriers and puts the extra financial burden on the hard-core enthusiasts who want to upgrade faster than the traditional one-year lifecycle of most flagship devices. Existing Jump users can stick with their current plans, and can continue to upgrade every six months.

One of Android's biggest draws is its roots in open source. It enables a broad range of device manufacturers to work from the same code base, and provides app developers with more insight into the platform they're building on. But openness isn't a binary condition — there are many shades of gray. While Android is technically very open, from a practical standpoint it's much more difficult for device makers to distance themselves from Google, if that's their preference. 'Phone manufacturers and carriers that want to use Google's services must conform to Google's device standards, a stricter requirement than what basic AOSP requires. For some, this is a catch. For others, it's merely the cost of doing business. ... [Dianne Hackborn, one of Android's tech leads,] defends Google's right to include proprietary services, and to keep them proprietary, saying that its no different than any other proprietary app on Android. That's not entirely true, since Google does keep some API development to itself, but to its credit the company does open-source most of the new APIs introduced to Android.'

Spokesperson claims fees for previously free items were 'part of a small-scale test'
EA PopCap briefly implemented new in-app purchases into its popular free-to-play mobile game Plants Vs Zombies 2 this week before quickly pulling them after angry player feedback.
Lawnmowers, which are used as the last line of defence against zombie attacks in the tower defence game, previously respawned after each level for free of charge. But following a recent update, users were instead asked to purchase replacements for 2,000 coins worth of in-game currency, even after failing or completing a level.
One Reddit user claimed the developer had "fundamentally changed a core mechanic of the game in order to make you pay more".
Following angry feedback, the newly added microtransaction was quickly removed from the game in a subsequent patch.
In a statement to ArsTechnica, a PopCap spokesperson claimed the addition of an extra IAP to a core game mechanic was part of a "small-scale test".
"We are always testing new features in Plants vs. Zombies 2," read a statement from the developer.
"The lawnmower feature noted by some players was part of a small-scale test and is now over."
The latest controversy over in-app purchases comes shortly after EA recently got in hot water over Mythic's use of microtransactions in free-to-play title Dungeon Keeper, which developers and players alike have accused of being too aggressive.

So what if you don't know jack? As long as you know words - and how to spell them - you'll do fine in Jackbox Games' new puzzler, Word Puttz. The free-to-play game, now available on iOS and Android, puts a spin on classic word games such as Scrabble and Words With Friends by having players place letter tiles not on a board, but a mini-golf course.
Think of your words as both a way to score points and the route your ball will travel. You want to make good, high-value words, but also need to eventually wind up at the hole. Obstacles, pre-placed words and races against the AI add variety to the game's four courses, which feature more than 70 levels total.
Oh yeah, and the in-game host is an octopus. Because reasons.

Arguably the best deal on an Ouya we've seen in a while has surfaced over on digital commerce site Stack Social. You can grab an Ouya console, controller and a $25 credit towards games right now, all for $85.
Sorry, this deal is only available to folks in the continental United States. Also, this is the 8GB console, not the new 16GB console Ouya revealed last month. This sale ends in 12 days and price includes shipping.
Need some ideas for what to spend that $25 on? Towefall is a strong candidate, as is Double Fine's The Cave and free-to-play roguelike Soul Fjord. There areover 500 games in total to choose from.
The Ouya is an Android-powered games console whose marketplace is characterized by having free demos of every game offered there. Ouya ships with the latest updated firmware, which was introduced late last year and augments much of the Ouya's user interface.
