Windows boasts record sales and increased European market share.
Although lacking specific numbers, Microsoft has grabbed the CES2014 megaphone to shout about its record sales, reports Neowin.
Signs that things were looking up for the company were spattered around the media with reports of Windows Phone shipments growing 156 per cent in November, and the prediction that devs for the platform were set to double to 32 per cent this year.
Sales shot up even more over the festive period, taking the number two OS in some countries, and outselling the iPhone is 24 other markets.
A Microsoft spokesperson, commented: “In the third quarter this year, according to IDC, Windows Phone reinforced its position as a top three smartphone operating system and was the fastest-growing platform among the leading operating systems with 156 per cent year-over-year gain.â€
Some of the countries that Windows took the number two spot are Mexico, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Finland, and Czech Republic. Plus a few of the 24 markets where the Windows Phone out-shipped the iPhone were Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The spokesperson continued: “Windows Phone is the number two smartphone operating system in 14 markets, and shipped more than iPhone in 24 markets in Q3. Our portfolio continues to expand: form award-winning flagship devices like the Nokia Lumia 928/1020/1520, to affordable new innovations like the Lumia 520/625/1320 and Huawei W1/W2.â€

In much the same way that smartphones are trending towards larger screens, it appears that manufacturers like Samsung are experimenting with the same concept in the tablet realm. The company has just introduced its latest (and largest) Android-running Galaxy Note device called the Note Pro 12.2. Announced alongside the Tab Pro 12.2 at CES, the Note Pro offers the same S Pen functionality we've enjoyed on previous devices like the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 edition, and as usual, you're going to see some refinements in Samsung's firmware and user experience as well. The device will be available in LTE, 3G and WiFi flavors and is expected to launch sometime this quarter in various parts of the world.
As soon as we tried out the new Note Pro, we immediately noticed the size and weight difference compared to Samsung's 10.1-inch offerings. Regardless of how much you trim its bezel, a 12.2-inch tablet simply isn't designed for optimal portability, which means we're more likely to use it as a coffee table device, special projects or conferences in the office. It's just a little too awkward to hold for long periods of time. Aside from that and a glaring weight difference -- 753g (1.66 lbs) on the 12.2, versus 547g (1.21 lbs) on the 10.1 -- we were hard-pressed to find any variation between the 12.2-incher and the Note 10.1 2014 edition; it features the same design, button layout, "leather-like" back and display resolution (2560x1600, for a pixel density of 247 ppi). Other than that, what stands out on the 12.2, which runs Android 4.4 KitKat, is a few key new firmware features like Remote PC and Magazine UX. Continue reading below the gallery and our hands-on video to get more of our impressions.

We've heard a number of rumors recently about Nokia's Normandy phone, which will supposedly ship with an Android-based operating system. Shots of the handset, with its lack of a hardware shutter trigger, capacitive buttons and LED flash, appeared back in December, and now mobile tipster @Evleaks has postedwhat could be the first shots of Nokia's alternative take on Google's open-source platform. Three leaked renders of the device show support for dual SIMs, lockscreen notifications, a dialer screen and what appears to be a custom version of Skype's mobile app.
Nokia's Normandy project is said to be a low-end Asha equivalent that runs a forked version of Android, meaning it won't be associated with Google's apps and services (similar to Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets). As we know, Nokia's mobile business is currently awaiting the all-clear for an acquisition by Microsoft, meaning the project might never see the light of day. The leaked shots suggest Nokia has made significant progress with Normandy, but we'll have to wait and see if the project forms part of its new owner's future plans.

The Android and Kindle versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are now available to purchase.
Originally announced in late November, the remastered version of the 2004 classic was released on iOS in December.
Now the game can also be purchased for Android tablets and smartphones via the Google Play store, as long as you have one ofthese supported devices.
The title supports all HID-compliant USB and Bluetooth game controllers as well as MOGA controllers.
The Kindle version, meanwhile, will only work on the Kindle Fire HDX 7.0 and 8.9. It will not work on the standard Kindle Fire HD.
The mobile version of San Andreas is priced at £4.99 / €5.99 / $6.99 / $7.49 AUS.
A version for Windows Phone is still in development, with Rockstar telling gamers to "look for it soon".
The game was originally released for PS2 in October 2004. In our Grand Theft Auto San Andreas review, we said it "delivers an unbelievable amount of new features while polishing up all the things that the GTA series already did well."

CD Projekt Red is partnering with Fantasy Flight Games for The Witcher Adventure Game, a tabletop board game also planned for iOS and Android tablets.
The adventure casts four players as four characters from the world of the books and video games: the Witcher himself Geralt of Rivia, sorceress Triss Merigold, well-connected bard Dandelion, and dwarven leader Yarpen Zigrin. Players compete and collaborate across a world map, completing quest cards and advancing their characters through customizable skill paths.
Players can cooperate or clash through combat, diplomacy, and magic. CD Projekt Red aims to cater to Witcher fans new to tabletop games and dice-rolling experts alike, the latter of whom may recognize designer Ignacy Trzewiczek from his previous projects Stronghold and 51st State.
The game is not yet available for pre-order, though interested parties can sign up for further updates on its web page.
CD Projekt Red plans to release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2014. Series fans hungry for more of the fantasy universe can also look forward to a Dark Horse comic book series starting in March.

While Samsung has held back from launching a new flagship smartphone at CES 2014, Sony has gone full steam ahead with two new devices.
The Xperia Z1 Compact is, as you may have guessed, a mini version of Sony’s flagship Xperia Z1 smartphone. It features pretty much all the same specs as the 5-inch Z1 but packs it all into a device with a slightly smaller 4.3-inch display. It also has a slightly smaller 2300mAh battery compared to the Z1’s 3000mAh one.
The Z1S also comes with similar specs to the Z1, but it has a higher IP58 waterproof rating so it can be submerged into water for more time and depth.
It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and has 2GB or RAM. There’s 32GB of inbuilt storage and a Full HD 5-inch Triluminos display powered by Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2.
As well as smartphones, Sony has unveiled a host of other products at CES 2014, including a 4K camcorder priced at under $2,000 (£1,220), which the company says is 46 per cent smaller and 67 per cent lighter than previous models.
In the TV stakes Sony has unveiled a new form factor called ‘Wedge’. The new TVs have deep, triangular sides which are thicker at the bottom.
This extra space makes way for better speakers in-built into the device to provide ‘better bass, a wider sonic range, and clearer vocals’ than a common pair of speakers.

Beamdog and Overhaul Games' Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate 2 isn't too far away from reaching the iPad finally, after being stuck in Apple's review process for the last month. According to a tweet posted yesterday by Beamdog Creative Director Trent Oster, the RPG re-release has had its in-app purchases approved, and "should hit soon."
The iOS and Android versions were originally due to arrive shortly after the game hit PC and Mac last November, so it's been a bit of a wait for mobile heroes-to-be. Considering Android has yet to receive Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, let alone the sequel, we suspect that version won't hit so shortly. We've reached out to Beamdog to see if we can gather some more info.
Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition, priced $25 on PC and Mac, brings a number of additions including four new heroes for your party, higher-def graphics, remastered artwork, and enhanced multiplayer. It also features the Throne of Bhaal expansion, and a follow-up to the first game's Black Pits arena-based campaign.

Eight and 12-inch devices combine movies and education.
The trend of children using mobiles could become a lot more common, as DreamWorks partners with kids' product creator Fuhu to create the Android-powered DreamTab.
The animation studio is responsible for huge movies including Shrek andMadagascar, and believes combining technology and filmmaking has made the eight and 12-inch tablets unique.
Jim Mitchell, CEO of Fuhu, said: "Similar to the entrepreneurial nature of Fuhu, there is a founder-led spirit of innovation at DreamWorks Animation which permeates the studio and inspires them to create compelling content, regardless of the medium. They are true experts in crafting exceptional family entertainment with a unique understanding of and passion for technology."
The DreamTab has been co-developed by the company and goes beyond a content deal. The devices promise to offer:
* Fuhu's Wings Learning System education – reading, writing, maths – service
* Parental controls, which allow adults to set time limits, virtual currency, locks and syncs with their own devices
* Video art lessons with DreamWorks animators, the likes of who have been responsible for Shrek and Kung Fu Panda
* Nabi Play – home to children's shows from DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Disney and Cartoon Network
* A dedicated app store for apps, games, music, films, e-books and more
* NFC
* Android Kit Kat
* 16GB and 32GB memory
* Cloud sync
Jim Mainard, head of digital strategy, DreamWorks Animation, added: "Fuhu grabbed our attention when they came on the market because they single-handedly made a quantum leap forward in revolutionising the kids tech space; as their company grew, we saw an incredible opportunity to join with them to take the overall tablet experience to a whole new level
"The DreamTab posed a compelling challenge not only to our filmmakers and artists to create content for this new medium, but also for our engineers and innovators who worked hand-in-hand with the Fuhu team to develop the consumer-facing side of this groundbreaking technology."
DreamTab will be showcased at CES this week and released in spring.
