As Samsung's Galaxy S5 gets ready to launch, the rumor alert scale has already hit "yellow." The latest from @evleaks shows a possible TouchWiz home screen that would be a sharp U-turn from the current one, if real. It displays information and notifications like Google Now in a tiled format Ã* la Microsoft's Modern/Metro UI -- not unlike the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2's Magazine UX. Naturally, there's no info about how the software would gather up such data, but in any event, the screenshot above could easily be a Samsung test or a fake -- we'll find out in a few short months.

VLC for iOS just got a much-needed coat of fresh paint. The media player's version 2.2 update has introduced an iOS 7-native interface with its own set of multi-touch playback gestures: you can tap with two fingers to pause a video, and swipes control the brightness, playback position and volume. This is more than just a skin-deep upgrade, though. VLC is now more cloud-savvy with support for Dropbox streaming, HTTP Live Streaming and downloads from Google Drive. The new app handles both lock screen privacy and TV show organization more elegantly than its predecessor, and it plays clips encoded in the more advancedHEVC (H.265) and VP9 formats. All told, there are plenty of reasons for video lovers to swing by the App Store for the upgrade.

Sprint was the first out of the gate to announce LG G Flex pricing and availabilityfor the US, but AT&T isn't too far behind. The network just made it be known thatthe curved smartphone will be available for pre-order online and at retail stores starting January 24th. We haven't been given specifics on when the device will get shipped out to early adopters, nor do we have a date on when it'll be stocked on shelves for everyone else -- but we do know, however, that it'll be all yours for $300 with a two-year contract. If you'd rather get it on a Next plan, you can do so by paying $27 per month (on an 18-month plan) or $35 per month (on a 12-month plan). We're still awaiting word on when T-Mobile's option will come out, but we'd guess that we'll be hearing pretty soon.

AT&T is looking to make its Next smartphone payment plan a little more prominent. You'll be eligible to hop on-board the Next bandwagon in a mere six months and start swapping handsets sooner right now if you were under a two-year service agreement before January 18th. If you walked out of an AT&T store this morning with the carrier's typical contract, well, you're stuck with your handset for the next 20 months. We imagine that somewhere, surrounded by magenta,John Legere is smiling.

If you purchased Square Enix's revamped Android port of the classic Super NES RPG Final Fantasy 6 after it hit Google Play last week, you may want to put your playthrough on hold while its developers sort out a major bug affecting player progress. Currently, the game crashes at a critical point, making the latter half of its storyline inaccessible.
Players report that the glitch occurs during a climactic battle between Kefka and General Leo in Thamasa at the game's halfway point. A crash during a cutscene renders the game unbeatable, as story progress is stalled until required events unfold in Thamasa.
Publisher Square Enix acknowledges the bug in the game's Google Play description, and promises that an upcoming fix will soon allow players to travel to the Floating Continent and beyond. A release date for the patch has not been announced.

Sure, 64-bit support is all the rage nowadays in the mobile space, what with Apple setting off a trend with the introduction of the iPhone 5s. Now, according to Intel's CEO, tablets running Google's operating system are next and will soon be available with 64-bit compatibility. During an earnings call yesterday, Intel chief Brian Krzanich said that Android tablets using the company's new Atom-basedBay Trail processor are set to hit the market as early as this spring, bringing alonga technology which so far has been limited to Windows 8.1 devices. It's also worth noting that while 64-bit slates may be arriving soon, the number of Android applications optimized to take advantage of the feature will be very low at first. Still, chances are developers will quickly take care of this as more and more 64-bit-ready phones and tablets start to become available.

We've yet to hear more details about the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2's launch this quarter, but a recent FCC filing at least reveals that it might head to Verizon. According to the documents, a particular variant that goes by model number SM-P905V supports Big Red's LTE (4 and 13) bands. Since the 2014 refresh of the 10.1 Note Pro has also passed through the agency with Verizon LTE, the carrier might offer both sizes when the tablets hit the market. Based on the info we got from the gigantic tablet's CES debut, it'll have a WiFi version for those who have no need for mobile internet. Folks set on buying one with long-term evolution speeds, however, may want to cross their fingers for the behemoth to hit their preferred carriers.

Sick of your new phone already? Verizon would like a word with you. Over the weekend, the company made some changes to its Edge upgrade program, drastically reducing the amount of time customers need to wait before pursuing an upgrade. The plan originally allowed trade-ins for devices that were half paid off and about six months old; now the waiting period has been reduced to a mere 30 days. Verizon told CNET the tweak was technically a promotion, but it's not actually much of a deal. Although the wait-time has been reduced by a factor of six, the amount due hasn't changed a penny: users seeking a new device still need to pony up at least 50 percent of the phone's value, even if they've only been using it for a few weeks. While it's always good to have options, maybe it's a better idea to sort out your buyer's remorse during your carrier's return window.

I thought those veteran gamers amongst you might like this one. Quake III Arena by legendary developer id Software isn't available on the App Store, but there is a way that you can get it to work on your iPad all the same. You can also get Open Arena and Quake III Shareware to work on Apple's tablet. The process is reasonably straightforward for anyone who wants to give it a ago, and Grab It Magazine has provided a step-by step guide, with pictures and necessary links, to help the interested through it.

Smaller tablets expected to dominate the future market.
Sales of tablets in the UK is projected to fall from 17 million in 2013, to 14 million this year, according to CCS Insight.
This comes just after we saw a huge rise in sales ranging from the top-end premium models such as they iPad, to the budget devices such as the Tesco Hudl.
Over 43 per cent of the UK’s population now owns a tablet, up from just six per cent two years ago. This number is expected to double by 2017.
The coming two years however will see the market slow down, as people take a breather from consuming the newest gadgets so quickly. It will pick up again in 2016 - contrary to Strategy Analytics' 2012 prediction that tablet sales would pass 780 million in 2016 worldwide - and CCS Insight reckon sales will hit 20 million in the UK by 2017.
Marina Koytcheva, director of forecasting at CCS Insight, said: “It’s only natural that we will now see a cooling off in tablet sales for the next couple of years. The next big wave of growth will come in two years when consumers who bought their first tablets in 2012 and 2013 start replacing them.â€
Smaller tablets are expected to dominate the market even more so than they are doing now. 2012 was a bad year for the little tablets, as they only accounted for 34 per cent. This rose to 63 per cent in 20113 and is looking to grow even further in the future.

Renren Games launched a quirky, licensed free-to-play basketball game on iOSthis week called NBA Rush. The game is an endless runner in the same vein asTemple Run in which players dodge obstacles with one of 90 real-life NBA players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin, jamming their way through pesky aliens.
The brightly-colored game includes a number of power-ups like "space jump," and each athlete has a special ability that can be "tagged in" while one dribbles endlessly, dunking all over the UFO-riding creatures from other planets. If there's anything Space Jam has taught us, it's that aliens and basketball don't mix.

Furthering its efforts to embrace the ubiquity of iOS devices, Sony has ported a handful of minigames found in Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time from their original home on the PlayStation 3 and Vita handheld to iOS.
Dubbed "Bentley's Hackpack," the free mobile release features three minigames. "Spark Runner" sees players maneuvering a spark through an electronics-themed course, "Alter Ego" is a side-scrolling shooter set inside increasingly complex mazes and "System Cracker" asks players to blow up virtual enemies from the comfort of a small tank. Those who have played Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time will recall each of these diversions as short minigames, though a later standalone release on both PS3 and Vita offered more fleshed-out versions of the trio.
As Game Informer notes, the debut of Bentley's Hackpack continues a trend of Sony issuing short, tie-in games on iOS. In November, the publisher released a match-three puzzle game linked to PlayStation 4 launch title Knack.

It's a fantasy come true: After admiring him from afar for so long, you're now moving in with your dreamy boss from work. Will this be the beginning of a budding romance, or is it the start of a workplace disaster? It's up to you to keep your professional life on track while spending quality time with your pretty anime boyfriend in Our Two Bedroom Story, a rare English-localized entry in the otome (female audience-targeted) romance simulation genre released today for iOS and Android devices.
"As the player is thrown into her secret, new life with her boss," the game's description reads, "she can experience the excitement of seeing a side of her guy that she never sees at work." Our prediction: He refuses to do the dishes and his room smells like a fart circus. It's up to you, then, to shape him into the boyfriend you want him to be while not getting fired from your day job. That would be awkward.
Our Two Bedroom Story's prologue chapter is free to download, but to continue your romantic conquest, you'll need to purchase one of two story paths, priced at $3.99 each. The game's epilogues cost an extra $1.99.

Horace Dediu writes at Aymco that in 2013 there were 18.8 times more Windows PCs sold than Macs, a reduction in the Windows advantage from about 19.8x in 2012. But the bigger story is how Apple's mobile platform including iOS devices has nearly reached the sales volume of Windows. In 2013 there were only 1.18 more Windows PCs than Apple devices sold. Odds are that in 2014 Apple and Windows will be at parity. Dediu says that the Windows advantage itself came from the way computing was purchased in the period of its ascent in the 1980s and 1990s 'when computing platform decisions were made first by companies then by developers and later by individuals who took their cues from what standards were already established. As these decisions created network effects, the cycle repeated and the majority platform strengthened.' There was concentration in decision making in the 80s so a platform could win by convincing 500 individuals who had the authority (as CIOs) to impose through fiat a standard on the centers of gravity of purchasing power. Today, with mobile products there are billions of decision makers. and the decision making process for buying computers, which began with large companies IT departments making decisions with multi-year horizons, has changed to billions of individuals making decisions with no horizons. Companies have become the laggards and individuals the early adopters of technology. 'Ultimately, it was the removal of the intermediary between buyer and beneficiary which dissolved Microsoft's power over the purchase decision,' concludes Dediu. 'The computer has become personal not just in the sense of how it's used but in the sense of how it's owned.' Finally, all the above is almost moot, given the rise of Android, something that is beating both Cupertino and Redmond alike."

You can watch but not buy or rent from your iPhone or iPad.
The Google Play Movies and TV app has be launched on the Apple App Store, becoming a direct competitor to iTunes on its own turf, reports Tech Crunch.
With the new app, you can watch all your Google Play content on an iPhone or iPad, but you will not be able buy or rent anything, as stated in the iOS SDK rules – and rules are rules.
Remember the whole HMV app debacle?
The move means that Google now has an advantage over Apple, as you can watch its content across Android and iOS devices – a similar strategy to Kindle’s app, which was launched on all the major platforms.
The only let down of Google Play Movies and TV is that is has considerably less content. Plus it lacks the deals that iTunes offers.
Nonetheless, it is a good platform and it is certainly good to see some slightly newer platforms standing up to the big iTunes bully even if it remains the best for user experience, content, and deals on its own platform.

Final Fantasy 6 is now available on Android. The mobile port was originally announced in October by Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita, who expected the game to arrive on both Android and iOS by the end of 2013. While it just missed the mark on its Android release, the game has not yet appeared on iOS.
Final Fantasy 6 has been all over the place, as it first launched in 1994 on SNES, was later ported to PlayStation in 1999, Game Boy Advance in 2006 and hit PSN in 2011. The Android version of the game features recreated graphics and shares the "new magicites and events" that were brought forth on GBA. The classic RPG costs $15.99 on the Google Play store.
